MacUpdate Spring Bundle now live, includes VMWare Fusion
MacUpdate has launched its Spring Bundle offer, giving buyers the regular retail versions of 11 top-rated Mac titles worth $377.79 at normal prices for a bundle price of $50. The bundle includes three tools normally priced higher than the entire bundle: VMWare Fusion 4 ($50) for virtualizing a Windows environment, Mac utility Drive Genius 3 ($100), and PDF markup tool PDFpen 5 ($60).

Sharp's absence from new iPad LCDs blamed on short delay
Sharp's apparent absence from new iPad LCD production was out of a delay, not an outright rejection, an insider claimed Wednesday. It was to contribute starting in late December, according to the Wall Street Journal, but it had problems tailoring the screens to make sure they fit. New shipments could start as soon as March.

Where to buy an iPad on Friday
If you missed the launch day pre-orders and want to get an iPad on Friday, you should start planning your strategy now. Like any good consumer, you'll need to decide which store will have the most iPads and the smallest line so you can maximize your chances of getting the model that you want. In the past, customers have lined up in advance and waited at least overnight to get their hands on the latest iPad. This year, it's all up for grabs because Apple had an ample supply of pre-order tablets that'll be delivered on launch day. Archos outs G10 xs tablet line, readies Transformer Prime contenders
After releasing a teaser earlier today, Archos is now shedding a tiny bit of light on its upcoming G10 xs series. Congress wants more answers from Apple on privacy safeguards
Energy and Commerce Committee members GK Butterfield and Henry Waxman sent a letter to Wednesday asking it for more information over ongoing app privacy concerns. The two said that a reply given by Apple on March 2 "does not answer" some of the questions they had asked about what privileges apps have over photos and tracking. Apple was asked to provide representatives who would brief staff on the committee about Apple's efforts.

iTunes 1080p video comes close to Blu-ray quality
Ars Technica did an extreme close-up analysis of video quality from iTunes 1080p downloads versus the same title on a Blu-ray. The verdict? Blu-ray still takes the title of best-looking HD format, but the iTunes version is very close to Blu-ray quality. New Apple TVs begin shipping to online buyers
Apple has started shipping out the updated Apple TV to people who bought it from the company's online store, according to a customer's shipping notice shared with AppleInsider. While the email states that the package should arrive on the 16th, the official launch date for the set-top, FedEx tracking data suggests it will actually arrive a day early.

Canada relaxes rules on foreign ownership of wireless companies, plans spectrum auction for first half of 2013
The Canadian government made a major announcement on telecom policy late this afternoon, revealing a change that opens the door to more foreign ownership of wireless companies -- an issue that's been a point of contention for some time. As The Globe & Mail reports, the new rules will allow for 100 percent ownership of companies with a market share of ten percent or less -- something that can then grow beyond ten percent, so long as it's not done through mergers or takeovers. iTunes movies in 1080p: less than or equal to Blu-ray image quality?
Blu-ray's been atop the home entertainment mountain, with only fleeting competition from HD-DVDs, ever since its introduction. Since then, home internet connections have gotten faster and the quality of downloadable content has improved such that iTunes can offer 1080p versions of your favorite movies. Mozilla considers supporting H.264 after poor WebM uptake
Mozilla research director Andreas Gal has proposed a rare change of heart that could see Boot2Gecko, and possibly Firefox, adopt H.264 playback. The mode would let HTML5 pages use the video tag for in-page H.264 as long as the OS underneath already supports the codec. At least in theory, it would let Mozilla officially keep active support only for open formats like WebM while acknowledging the reality of H.264's much wider reach.

T-Mobile USA urges FCC to make 700MHz LTE interoperable
T-Mobile USA has sent a letter to the FCC (PDF), asking it that all 700MHz LTE bands are interoperable between carriers. Such a move would motivate roaming and help the public in terms of safety, T-Mobile wrote. A meeting is scheduled for next week, at which the FCC will decide whether the interference between 700MHz B and C block operations could be mitigated if the lower band were to be made interoperable.

Apple leads US corporations in growing concentration of cash
Apple leads US corporations in terms of cash reserves, notes Moodyís Investors Serviceís Richard Lane. In all US corporations are said to hold about $1.2 trillion. Apple controls $97.6 billion; other tech companies in the top five include Microsoft with $51.7 billion, Cisco with $46.7 billion, and Google with $44.6 billion. Drugmaker Pfizer is fifth.

New single ion clock is '100 times more precise' than existing atomic models
Researchers at the University of South Wales have developed a new type of atomic clock that measures an atom's neutron orbit instead of the electron's flight path. Briefly: Epson driver update, Medis PLUS reach Apple Stores
Apple on Tuesday slipped out a version 2.1 update to its Epson printer driver set for OS X Lion and Snow Leopard. The release notes do not indicate what has changed, simply stating, "This download includes the latest Epson printing and scanning software for OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6." Oink to shut down on March 31 after brief run
Tech idea incubator Milk posted notice Wednesday that it was shutting down its local rating service Oink. While the iOS app had already stopped checking for new updates, the company told users they would have until March 31 before the site and existing content would be taken down. The company argued that Oink was its "first test" in quickly building ideas and that it wanted focus as it was "preparing to move onto the next project."

FTC Subpoenaed Apple over Google search on iOS
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission subpoenaed Apple as part of a Google antitrust inquiry says Bloomberg. The FTC asked Apple to hand over documents that detail its search agreement with Google. Dutch court: Samsung can't sue Apple over 3G again
A District Court in The Hague ruled Wednesday that Samsung could no longer try to sue Apple over 3G. The partial decision reaffirmed a view that Samsung can't sue as long as Apple is willing to reach a licensing deal for 3G. Verizon to double LTE reach in 2012, hints LTE iPhone again
Verizon's wireless CTO David Small in conversation late Tuesday mapped out an aggressive LTE coverage expansion along with strong hints of an eventual LTE-capable iPhone. Small told the Wall Street Journal that coverage would climb from 200 areas so far to "at least" 400 by the end of 2012. Marktforschung: Android-Tablets werden 2015 mengenmäßig das iPad überholen
Dem Marktforschungsunternehmen IDC zufolge übernimmt Android im Jahr 2015 von Apple die Position an der Tablet-Marktspitze. Mit jedem neuen, billigeren Android-Konkurrenten gehe der Marktanteil von iOS weiter zurück: Obwohl die iPad-Verkäufe zwischen dem dritten und vierten Quartal 2011 um 50 Prozent zunahmen, sank ihr Marktanteil von 61,6 auf 54,7 Prozent. Android hinegegen baute - vor allem dank Amazons Kindle Fire - in derselben Zeit seinen Anteil von 32,3 auf 44,6 Prozent aus.
Die Gesamtzahl verkaufter Tablets werde um fast das Dreifache von 68,7 Millionen im Jahr 2011 auf 198,2 Millionen Stück im Jahr 2016 anwachsen. Morgan Stanley sees Apple stock reaching as high as $960
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty has raised her "base case" price target for Apple stock from $515 to $720, but set "bull" and "bear" targets of $960 and $405, respectively. "We believe Apple's earnings power is potentially far greater than investors believe and our prior bull case model suggested," she writes in a new memo. iOS still holds edge in worldwide tablet shipments, despite Kindle Fire launch
The tablet market heated up in the last quarter of 2011 when Amazon went head-to-head against Apple with its Kindle Fire. Many expected the Fire to make a dent in the sales of the Apple iPad and the latest IDC numbers suggest their expectations were correct. Though overall iPad shipments increased, the iPad's market share fell in the final quarter of 2011 due to the Kindle Fire. IDC says Apple shipped 15.4 million units in Q4 2011, up from 11.1 million units in Q3 2011. This increase was offset by shipments of the Kindle Fire which climbed to 4.7 million units. EU probing phone carriers for possible collision
Possible slips may have revealed the first stages of a possible European Commission investigation into the continent's top five carriers. The FT heard from sources that Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile), France Telecom (Orange), Telecom Italia, Telefonica (O2), and Vodafone were under scrutiny for a series of "E5" meetings on the state of the industry. iPad 3: Auch LG ist Zulieferer für das Retina-Display
Entgegen dem ursprünglichen Bericht von Bloomberg, scheint nicht allein Samsung für die Herstellung des neuen Retina-Displays zuständig zu sein. Die Nachrichtenagentur Reuters bringt nun auch den südkoreanischen Produzenten LG ins Spiel.

Discovery shows hit Amazon Prime Instant Video, because it's 'Dirty Jobs,' but someone has to stream it
Amazon today announced a deal that will bring a slew of content from Discovery Communications to its ever increasing selection of streamable Prime videos. The partnership includes content from such properties as the Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet, amongst a handful of others, with shows like Dirty Jobs and Whale Wars coming along for the ride. Apple confirms 8AM new iPad launch, March 23 second wave
Apple in its customary pre-launch details both confirmed a launch time for the new iPad and outlined the next wave of countries after the initial March 16 date. A new leak on Wednesday has countered claims that Samsung might be exclusive as Apple's supplier for the new iPad's display. Shadow Government tries to combine real-world policy with casual gameplay
Shadow Government was probably the most fascinating game I saw at GDC. I should probably clarify that: I didn't see much of the game in action, but what I did see showed off an excellently designed UI and some good looking (if a little complicated) Farmville-style game mechanics. The most fascinating thing about Shadow Government isn't what it does, but what its developers hope to do. IDC: Android tablets will overtake iPad by 2015, despite everything
They're not center-stage right now, but Android tablets are still predicted to overtake the iPad within the next three years, according to IDC. NPD: 40% of tablet buyers want keyboards, most don't get one
Many tablet buyers want a keyboard even if they're not acting on it, the NPD Group found from a study. About 40 percent of those who were planning to buy a tablet reportedly wanted a hardware keyboard. Safari-Update: Apple beschleunigt seinen Browser
Apple hat nun eine Aktualisierung des Browsers Safari veröffentlicht. Die Version 5.1.4 soll vor allem Javascript sehr schnell ausführen können im Vergleich zu den Vorgängerversionen.Der Apple-Browser soll demnach bei der Eingabe eines Stichwortes in die Suchtextzeile beschleunigt reagieren und schneller Ergebnisse liefern. Apple behob außerdem noch weitere bekannte Bugs von Safari. So sorgten Änderungen der Netzwerkeinstellungen in der Vergangenheit vermehrt dazu, dass ein weißer Zwischenbildschirm eingeblendet wurde, der beim Blättern einzelner geöffneter Seiten des Browsers auftrat. Bei der Wiedergabe von HTML5-Videos traten bei den Vorgängerversionen ebenso Fehler auf, die sich in einer Verdunklung des Bildschirms zeigten. Apple gibt an, dass auch dieser Bug mit der Safari-Version 5.1.4 behoben wurde.

Die Encyclopaedia Britannica gibt auf, zumindest den Druck der 32 Bände umfassenden Printausgabe: nach 244 Jahren soll die Ausgabe 2010 wohl die letzte gewesen sein. Das wurde auf der Webseite unter der vielsagenden Überschrift "Change: It's Okay. Really. " bekanntgegeben. Weitergehen soll es komplett digital und eigentlich sei die Umstellung ja lediglich ein weiterer historischer Moment in der Evolution des menschlichen Wissens. Apple baut neue Niederlassung in Texas
Laut einem Bericht des republikanischen Gouverneurs von Texas, Rick Perry, plant Apple den Bau einer neuen Niederlassung für rund 304 Millionen US-Dollar. Perry teilt zudem mit, dass durch die Investition des IT-Konzerns aus Cupertino in den nächsten zehn Jahren 3.600 neue Arbeitsplätze geschaffen werden. Aktuell beschäftigt Apple in Texas ca. 1.800 Menschen. Somit würde Apple diese Zahl verdoppeln.An der Realisierung des Projektes beteiligt sich auch der US-amerikanische Bundesstaat selbst mit 21 Millionen US-Dollar, die aus einem Förderungsfond zur Unternehmensgründung stammen. Anti-virus and security software maker Symantec decided to conduct an experiment to see if lost smartphones would be returned, and discovered a few surprising facts and common-sense tips along the way. While the chances of retrieving a deliberately-stolen smartphone are slim (but improved with the iPhone's "Find My iPhone" app), lost phones had a better return rate, as nearly half of the phones lost by Symantec were returned.

Apple updates Epson printer drivers, Aperture
Late today Apple has updated almost all Epson printer drivers with built-in support for Snow Leopard and Lion, and has posted a minor update to its pro-photography tool Aperture to grant it the ability to delete photos from Photo Stream, an iCloud feature that can be set to wirelessly copy photos from mobile devices to desktop and notebooks and vice versa. The Epson update is number v2.9, while Aperture is now v3.2.3.

Toshiba intros Exceria as world's fastest SD card
Toshiba late Tuesday brought out a new line of SD cards, Exceria, that it hoped would be the fastest ever. The entire line is fast enough to meet the UHS-1 speed grade and Class 10, and in many cases is near the peak. The fastest tier of the new cards, Exceria Type 1, can top 95MB per second in read speed and writes at 90MB per second, making it a good fit for speed shooting with more recent DSLR cameras.

First extensive third-gen iPad camera samples pop online
Fresh from a very early unboxing, Vietnam's Tinhte has posted the first substantial batch of camera samples from the 2012 iPad. While not difficult, they prove that the five-megapixel camera is dramatically better than the one-megapixel example of the iPad 2. Psychonauts developer Double Fine ended its Kickstarter project Tuesday evening with the largest project in the site's history. Encyclopaedia Brtiannica stops print edition in Internet era
Encyclopaedia Britannica ended one of the longest print runs in history by revealing in an interview that the last print edition of its collection was going off the presses. PayPal may go after Square's mobile payments
PayPal is planning to take on Square with a new payment processing dongle, says a report from GigaOM. The dongle will supposedly tie into PayPal's already robust payment processing system and will be targeted towards small businesses. Smaller companies would be able to use this system to process credit card transaction at the office or in the field. PayPal says its technology will become "the future of commerce for small businesses."
