Alleged iPad 3 case may suggest new camera, battery parts
Housing for the iPad 3 suggests a few differences with the frame for the iPad 2, according to RepairLabs. Sources in China have allegedly gained access to the newer part, which, for instance, is said to show different mounts for the logic board. This should allow more space for a battery, potentially increasing battery life, or at least keeping it the same.

Google Chrome 17 live with prerendering, download screening
Google wrapped up and posted the finished version of Chrome 17 for the desktop on Wednesday. The new browser update takes site prerendering beyond just search results to include autocompletion. If the autocompletion in the address bar is headed towards a likely web address, the browser will start loading content in the background to speed up the perceived load time. It can give the impression that favorite sites load almost immediately, Google suggested.

HTML5-based Depthcam puts a fresh spin on Kinect hacks
It's not the first time we've seen HTML5 used in conjunction with a Kinect hack, but George MacKerron's so-called Depthcam takes things to some interesting new levels. It's a live webcam that you can interact with in your web browser (Chrome only, for now). As you might expect, the ability to explore is a bit limited, but you are able to pan and zoom around the scene -- which is certainly impressive enough on its on. Sigma drops price of SD1, adds two 46MP DP compacts
Sigma on Wednesday both remade and added to its camera lineup. First off, the company's new CEO, Kazuto Yamaki, revealed that the high-end SD1 DSLR will be renamed to SD1 Merrill and get a very significant price drop, from $9,700 to $3,300. Yamaki said the reduction is due to the lower production costs of the 46-megapixel APS-C sensor, though no performance compromises have been made.

Tweetbot reaches iPad, gets 2.0 iPhone upgrade
Tapbots revamped its signature Twitter apps in large form on Wednesday, starting with the surprise release of Tweetbot for iPad ($3, App Store). The new version both adapts to the bigger canvas of the tablet and shares its support for creating multiple timelines from one account and gestures to save time. USAF may buy up to 18,000 iPads for cargo plane crews
The US Air Force is looking to buy as many as 18,000 more tablets, likely iPads, reports say. On the US government's Federal Business Opportunities website, a notice indicates that the Air Force's Air Mobility Command wants "a minimum of 63 and a maximum of 18,000, iPad 2, Brand Name or Equal devices" for use by the crews of cargo planes. The tablets would replace the paper charts and manuals crews currently take with them, which can be bulky, weightier and less convenient.

Apple stock gains nearly $100 since Steve's passing
Apple 2.0 editor Philip Elmer-DeWitt is back today with another fascinating Apple statistic: "[Apple] has gained nearly one Facebook in value since Steve Jobs died." Elmer-DeWitt remarks that the share price of AAPL on October 4, 2011, the day before Jobs passed away, was US$372.50 and that the market capitalization of the company was about $347 billion. Now, just four short months later, the stock price is (as of this morning) $472.66, over $100 greater than before Jobs died. That puts the market capitalization of Apple, Inc. at about $440 billion -- over $90 billion of growth in just four months.

Path closes contact sharing hole on iPhone, apologizes
Smartphone app developer Path has apologized and fixed the tendency of its app to collect user's entire contact lists to its own servers when the app is first launched. The Android app was already fixed, and now, the developers have released an updated iOS app, version 2.0.6 (free, App Store) that won't upload the data without a user's permission. Dave Morin, Path's co-founder and CEO, also explained that the contacts were used only in the Add Friends features to notify users when their contacts log into the app.

News: Claimed iPad 3 casing shows new camera, mounting holes
A photo of a purported “iPad 3” rear housing has appeared online, and shows a number of small—but notable—changes between it and the iPad 2. News: Path releases update to address contact privacy issue
In response to the recent revelation that social networking app Path was uploading iOS users’ contact data to its servers, the company has apologized and released an update to the iOS app providing proper disclosure of the feature and prompting the user to either opt in or opt out. Congress passes bill giving the FAA $11 billion to get off radar, onto GPS
It took awhile, and the price tag is quite a bit steeper than previously thought (shocking, right?), but the FAA is finally getting the funding it needs to bring the nation's air traffic control system up to date. Congress just passed the bill to make it happen, allotting $11 billion to the FAA to upgrade the nation's 35 busiest airports air traffic controls from radar to GPS. The deadline for the conversion is June 2015, and when complete, it'll allow for more precise positioning of aircraft -- GPS pings for the planes' locations every second, while radar updates their locations every 6 to 12 s

App users nearly tied viewers during Super Bowl
Flurry has tracked the amount of app users on their smart devices over the course of Super Bowl XLVI and found that nearly 98 million users accessed apps, compared to 111 million of those who watched it on the big screen. They went on to conclude that the app users, or those who turned on the "second screen," were largely overlapping, though both metrics set records. The TV numbers were borrowed from Nielsen.

iOS 5.1 beta carrier profiles hint possible March 9 target
New digging in the iOS 5.1 beta has given a possible clue as to Apple's target date for the OS. About 11 new carrier profiles all have references to an Apple diagnostic web address with "09Mar2012-Update" in the timeframe, suggesting to YourDailyMac's discoverer that the date was at least being kept in mind for a launch or a milestone. It touched on all existing iOS devices and at least five countries, pointing to a simultaneous release.

Verizon's double data deal returns this Friday, prepare yourselves accordingly
It looks like Verizon's about to double up on double data. According to the Los Angeles Times, Big Red is about to reintroduce the double data promotion that first rolled out in November, and came to a close at year's end. Chinese, more coming to Siri in March, source claims
A Chinese version of Siri will launch next month, claims DoNews. The website quotes an Apple engineer said to be working on the project, who adds that the technology is already in internal testing, and will moreover be able to process information and navigation requests, something only US Siri users currently enjoy. General language support has so far been restricted to three different English accents, as well as French and German.

A lot of us around the TUAW offices are big fans of everything that comes out of Tapbots, so when Tweetbot for iPhone came out we dutifully shelled out our bucks to get a decent Twitter app for our favorite phone. Tweetbot 2.0: Beliebter Twitter-Client wird noch besser

Researchers get CPUs and GPUs talking, boost PC performance by 20 percent
How do you fancy a 20 percent boost to your processor's performance? Research from the North Carolina State University claims to offer just that. Despite the emergence of fused architechture SoCs, the CPU and GPU cores typically still work independently. The University hoped that by assigning tasks based on each processor's abilities, performance efficiency would be increased. Vonage Mobile app offers free global calling, texting, more
VoIP provider Vonage has just released a new Vonage Mobile app that will allow for free calling and texting between users who have it installed on their smartphones, as well as discounted calling rates to those who don't. It uses Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G data networks and is now available for iOS (free, iTunes) and Android (free, Android Market) devices. Two US startups break solar efficiency records, aim to light up your life
Two US startups are breaking solar efficiency records in their quest to bring clean, cost-effective, eco-friendly energy to a power grid near you. Alta Devices, based in Santa Clara, CA, has achieved a 23.5 percent efficiency rating with its standard solar panel, while Semprius, a Durham, NC company, has achieved a rating of 33.9 percent with its concentrated photovoltaic offering -- besting the previous records of 22.9 percent and 33 percent, respectively. Motorola fordert 2,25 Prozent von Apples iPhone-Umsatz
Im Patentstreit zwischen Motorola und Apple könnte womöglich in den kommenden Wochen zu einer Einigung der beiden Parteien kommen. Adressbuch-Schutz: Address Book Privacy und ContactPrivacy in Cydia verfügbar
Dubiose App-Entwickler freut dies natürlich, da diese das gesamte Adressbuch mit allen darin befindlichen Daten ohne Wissen des Users abgreifen und an den Meistbietenden weitergeben können – auch wenn dies natürlich in den App Store Guidelines audrücklich untersagt ist. Doch weder Apples hausiegener App Store-Prüfprozess noch zahlreiche App-Entwickler interessieren sich für die Einhaltung der Datenschutzrichtlinien des App Stores.
Zu unserer Frage, ob und wann man denn endlich einen Schutzmechanismus, ähnlich jenem der Ortungsdienste, auch für das Adressbuch integrieren werde, wollte sich Apple nicht äußern.

Australian Pilot sues because he doesn't have an iPad
Virgin Australia Airlines First Officer David Kloster is suing his employer for almost one million dollars, claiming he hurt his back while lugging around almost 40 pounds of charts and manuals. Documents filed with the Queensland Supreme Court on Kloster's behalf state that the airline "failed to have in place a system of work whereby charts and rules could have been left on board its aircraft or kept electronically on an iPad." Microsoft celebrating leap year right by launching Windows 8 Consumer Preview at MWC

Samsung hints no major products at MWC with no event planned
Samsung has hinted that any products shown at Mobile World Congress may be low-profile after it stated Wednesday that it had no plans for a special event at the Barcelona show. The company didn't rule out any "exciting new products" in a response to PCMag inquiries, but it hinted that it not only would miss the Galaxy S III but that any other major unveilings would wait until later as well. Groups plan to submit labor petition to NYC Apple Store
Over 250,000 signatures from petitions on Change.org and SumOfUs.org will be delivered to New York City's Grand Central Apple Store on Thursday morning, according to a announcement. The effort is part of a campaign to push Apple to develop a "worker protection strategy," in light of stories of poor labor conditions at Chinese Apple suppliers like Foxconn. iOS developer David Stanfill of Napkin Studio has been looking for a better way to demo his apps during online meetings, as well as to record live videos as the apps run. Well versed in video compression, protocols, and so forth, Stanfill decided to roll his own mirroring client for the Mac. It wasn't an easy journey. He had to put in a huge effort getting the technology working, to build his first mirroring prototype. iTV: Apple auf Partnersuche – Gerüchte zur Ausstattung
Apple will künftig im Wohnzimmer richtig mitmischen und hat hierfür mit dem Apple iTV möglicherweise ein passendes Gerät in der Pipeline. Amazon, Viacom deal brings more TV shows to Prime Instant Video service
Just as rumors indicated yesterday, Amazon has announced a new licensing deal with Viacom that will add TV shows from its networks -- MTV, Comedy Central, BET, VH1, Spike, Nickelodeon and the rest -- to the Prime Instant Video service. Paul McCartney to perform live concert on iTunes
Pop musician Paul McCartney will host a live, streaming concert through iTunes on February 9th at 7PM Pacific time, according to an announcement. The event is being hosted at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, and is meant to promote Kisses on the Bottom, a new McCartney album released on Tuesday. Backing him live will be Tommy LiPuma, as well as Diana Krall and her band, all of which contributed to the record.

Sprint: Baltimore, KC to get LTE; iPhone 40% of gross adds
Sprint in the wake of its fall results expanded its LTE plans and also touted the iPhone as a better option for its network than Android. The carrier now planned to add its original WiMAX city, Baltimore, to the cities getting LTE-based 4G by mid-2012. Sprint Q4 2011 results: 1.8 Million iPhones Sold
Sprint posted its Q4 2011 earnings on Wednesday and announced it sold 1.8 million iPhones in the quarter. Forty percent of those sales were to new customers and, overall, the carrier added 1.6M net subscribers in the quarter. Nokia cuts 4,000 smartphone factory jobs, moves them to Asia
Nokia showed the toughening conditions of the smartphone field on Wednesday after it detailed plans to cut 4,000 manufacturing jobs. Positions both in its home territory factory in Salo, Finland, as well as in Komarom, Hungary and Reynosa, Mexico, would be eliminated by the end of 2012. Smartphone production would be moving more towards Asia, where it wouldn't just be cheaper to make devices, but faster.

Sprint on Wednesday revealed a huge upswing in subscriber additions through its inaugural quarter of iPhone sales. It sold 1.8 million iPhones during the fall, 40 percent of which went to people new to the network. HP releast den Android-Kernel fürs Touchpad als Open Source
Ganz zu Beginn der kurzen Geschichte von HPs Touchpad tauchten einzelne Exemplare bei Kunden auf, die statt webOS mit Android unterwegs waren. Obwohl HP sich angeblich nie erklären konnte, wie es dazu kam, haben sie laut Rootzwiki parallel zur webOS-Version anscheinend immer auch eine für Android entwickelt. Die wurde, obwohl es sie eigentlich nicht gibt, jetzt von HP netterweise unter der GPL-Lizenz freigegeben (den Link gibts bei Rootzwiki, siehe Quelle-Link), was den ICS-Port fürs Touchpad deutlich beschleunigen und vereinfachen dürfte.

Virgin Media's Q4 2011 report: Brits love TiVo, Fast Broadband, Vampire Diaries
Virgin Media's school report for both last year and last quarter has been pretty positive for the Branson-Branded service. iTunes Match: Nur 17 Sekunden werden geprüft
Der Synchronisationsdienst von Apple, iTunes Match, macht die private Musikbibliothek über das Internet auf allen eigenen Geräten verfügbar. Titel, die es im iTunes Store gibt, werden aber nicht von der Platte des Nutzers auf einen Online-Speicher geladen. Sie werden direkt über den Store abgeglichen.
iTunes Match muss hierfür kontrollieren, welche Songs der Anwender auf seiner Festplatte gespeichert hat. Apple beschränkt sich dabei nicht nur auf die Dateiinformationen (Titelname, Länge,…), sondern analysiert auch das Audiomaterial. heise.de hat jetzt herausgefunden, dass sich die Prüfung auf die ersten 17 Sekunden eines jeden Titels beschränke.

Apple goes to Euro telecom authority seeking FRAND clarity
Apple approached the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in November seeking clarification on what it says is a lack of "consistent policy" on how manufacturers can license and set royalty rates on patents used by mobile devices. LG teases Optimus Vu Android smartphone with 5-inch screen, 4:3 aspect ratio (video)
If you're into high strangeness in the mobile realm, you'd be wise to check out the video of the Optimus Vu that LG just posted -- just follow the break. While our Korean translation skills aren't quite up to par, we've been able to decipher that this boxy number packs a 5-inch touchscreen and a rather unique 4:3 aspect ratio. The telltale capacitive touch buttons reveal this as an Android device, which the Korean manufacturer suggests is more comfortable to hold than traditional portrait-based solutions. It'll be interesting to see what this means for application compatibility, but for the moment, we're going to keep digging for more specs. StatCounter: Mobile web usage doubling every year, Nokia leads the way

Apple late today issued further EFI firmware updates to allow previous-generation MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMacs to access Lion Internet Recovery, a technology that lets users re-download and reinstall Lion when the hard drive containing the recovery partition has completely failed and no other backup medium is available. Olympus ended rumors Tuesday by trotting out its highest-end Micro Four Thirds camera to date. The OM-D is consciously styled after the classic OM-4 film camera but, in place of the mirrors and optical viewfinder, has a 1.44-megapixel electronic viewfinder instead. Olympus adds SZ-31MR ultrazoom compact, tougher TG-820
Olympus brought out two specialized point-and-shoot cameras ahead of the CP+ show. Leading off is the SZ-31MR, one of the longest-ranged compact ultrazoom cameras with a 24X (25-600mm equivalent) lens. The camera makes up for the blur likely at the far end of its zoom both by using a 16-megapixel, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and two previous-generation TruePic V chips that give it better low-light performance on top of improving camera speed and image processing.

Apple now requiring Retina Display-quality screenshots
Apple has sent out notifications to iOS developers that future updates to apps now require higher-resolution, 960x640 (Retina Display) compatible screenshots or the apps will not be approved. Motorola likely to get royalties from Windows 7, Xbox 360
Motorola may get a very important victory in its legal campaign against Microsoft. Based on observations from the Mannheim, Germany courtroom, patent lawsuit follower Florian Mueller believed that the court was "inclined to rule" that Microsoft owed Motorola royalties on Windows 7 and the Xbox 360 as well as two core apps, Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Media Player. The Android device maker wants the same 2.25 percent sales royalty that it has asked from Apple for 3G, which could lead to hundreds of millions in compensation with Microsoft's current results.

Considering Aperture for iOS
Gabe Glick over at Macstories has a proposal: Aperture for iOS. On the surface, it sounds like a pretty silly idea -- Apple's high end camera app is really made for a desktop environment, and with the hassle required to get high quality photos onto iOS devices, there really isn't a point bringing Aperture over to a platform like the iPad. Apple enjoys free Super Bowl advertising courtesy of NY Giants
While some tech pundits are bemoaning Apple's lack of ads during the Super Bowl on Sunday (the company hasn't run an ad during the big game for years), The Street's Jim Cramer is taking another view and one that is much more rooted in reality. Apple didn't need to pay for expensive Super Bowl air time, because the World Champion NY Giants provided tons of free advertising for the iPhone. Microsoft strikes deal with 24/7, promises to 'redefine' customer service
A partnership between Microsoft and customer service company 24/7 may not exactly sound like the most exciting proposition on the face of things, but the two are making some fairly lofty promises, and Microsoft seems to be making a serious investment in the initiative. As ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley reports, part of the deal will see Microsoft send at least some of the 400 employees it brought on in its 2007 acquisition of TellMe Networks to 24/7, and it will also license some of its speech-related IP to the company (in addition to taking an equity stake in it). Social app Path uploads users' address books, to get fix
The social networking app Path, which provides its own community along with the ability to share statuses and pictures to other popular public networks like Twitter and Facebook, has been discovered to be uploading users' entire address books to its own servers on first use. The undisclosed (and unauthorized) uploading was discovered by developer Arun Thampi and detailed in a blog post. The co-founder of Path responded by saying users would soon have an opt-in on the "feature," but did not explain why opt-in wasn't there from the beginning.
