Tiptoe 1.0 adds privacy layer to multiple apps
Zenopolis has launched Tiptoe, a new Mac privacy tool. The software replicates the private browsing concept found in browsers like Chrome and Safari, spreading it to a collection of 15 Mac apps. While active, apps do not record any new cache or history information; older data is kept intact.

Acer D241H display carries Wi-Fi and own mini-OS
Acer in a low-profile introduction has launched one of its first intelligent computer displays. The D241H borrows the same concepts behind instant-on booting for notebooks and uses a Wi-Fi connection to load a miniature OS. The tactic gives the 24-inch LCD basic Internet access and widget-based news as well as media player and photo frame regardless of whether or not the attached computer is powered.

News: ChangeWave: e-Reader buyers prefer iPad over Kindle
According to data from the latest ChangeWave survey, respondents looking to purchase an e-Reader in the next 90 days are more likely to buy an iPad than an Amazon Kindle. Specifically, 40% of those respondents said they would purchase an iPad, compared to 28% for the Amazon Kindle, 6% for the Barnes & Noble Nook, and only 1% who said they planned to purchase a Sony Reader. Briefly: DPS audio plugin for iTunes, Booq iPad cases
Bongiovi Acoustics has released a new Digital Power Station plugin, designed to enhance sound in iTunes. The software analyzes audio in real-time and attempts to improve the brightness, clarity, and bass response of compressed files. DPS can also compensate for differences in volume between songs, and enhance dialogue and sound effects for both music and videos. The Mac plugin costs $30; Windows users should have access to more universal software in coming months.

iPad pushed to April due to software, not hardware?
The iPad's slightly delayed April 3rd release may actually be the result of time spent refining the software if a rumor proves substantive. Historically accurate with other leaks, John Gruber claims that Canaccord Adams' beliefs in a hardware issue are mistaken and that the actual problem was simply polishing iPhone 3.2 and companion apps in time for a release. The roughly week-long gap was simply a virtue of the "hard-to-predict timing" that comes from turning a beta into a polished product, Gruber's source said.

iPhone games ported to webOS in 'a matter of days' on tap for GDC?
EA has already said that it was able to get 3D games up and running on webOS in a "matter of weeks" using the OS' PDK (or Plug-in Development Kit), but it looks like Palm might be ready to step things up even further at GDC next week. While any official word will have to wait until then, John Paczkowski of AllThingsD says that he's heard from sources close to the company that Palm will be now demonstrating how iPhone apps can be ported to webOS "in a matter of days," and with virtually no degradation in performance. New Mac OS X 10.6.3 build sticks with minute changes
Apple is seeding a new developer build of Mac OS X 10.6.3, identified as 10D567. The update follows one from last week, and is again said to contain no significant new improvements, or any known issues. Developers are however being asked to test components like Rosetta, iChat, QuickTime, printing and graphics drivers.

iPhone games to port to webOS in a "matter of days"
Palm's Plugin Development Kit (PDK) will make it extremely simple to convert iPhone games to webOS, a source said today. The kit's approach, which runs native code within the platform's web-based framework, is said by AllThingsD to be so direct that an iPhone game can be converted in a "matter of days." Few changes are necessary, and the performance is purportedly as fast as on its native Apple counterpart.

Motorola's Android-powered iDEN device to be called i1?
Alright, pardon our conjecture here, but we think we're on to something. A Motorola just flew through FCC certification with ID IHDP56KV1 and model name "i1" featuring iDEN plus Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi -- in other words, this'll almost certainly be coming to Sprint Direct Connect. Remember that rumored Opus One with Android for iDEN? Yeah, well, "i1" is a pretty notable, stand-out model name if you ask us -- and it's not every day that you see an iDEN device with WiFi, suggesting this'll be a smartphone. Apple tests Safari, QuickTime, Pro App updates
Apple is currently testing updates to three pieces of software, sources note. The first is Safari 4.0.5, which is being tested in separate builds for Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Windows. The emphasis of the patch is said to be a regression in the browser's JavaScript engine, one which arose with the release of Safari 4.0.4. Some sections of code are also being transitioned from a Safari-native base to WebKit, for the sake of cross-platform compatibility.

GeForce GTX 480 may outrun Radeon, sell out day one
NVIDIA late yesterday put up a video (viewable below) that provides some of the first official performance indicators for the GeForce GTX 480. Android allows Photoshop.com to be an image editor for other apps
Adobe's Photoshop.com has mobile apps for both iPhone and Android. Each platform features a similar set of features. However, in an interesting twist today, Adobe announced that other application developers would be allowed to call up the Photoshop.com application to do photo editing inside their own applications.

iPad one week delay the fault of software?
John Gruber of Daring Fireball says that Apple's pushback of the iPad release one week isn't because of hardware, but really because of software:
My sources suggest that Misek is wrong. It was the software, not the hardware, that took a week or two longer to finish than they’d hoped. Nothing extraordinary or unusual, just the usual hard-to-predict timing of turning software that’s almost ready to ship into software that’s ready to ship. In the grand history of major OS release date slips, one week is pretty tame.

27% of e-reader buyers regret not waiting for iPad
More than a quarter of e-book reader buyers wish they had waited until the iPad was available to buy in, ChangeWave has found in a new study. Analysts positive on near-future iPhone, iPad prospects
Good times are ahead for two of Apple's flagship products, claim analysts with Merrill Lynch and UBS. Lynch's Scott Craig argues that investors should not be worried about whether or not a Verizon iPhone will become available later this year. We were glad to see Bluetooth low energy actually added to the Bluetooth 4.0 spec, but of course the question remained: when are we going to get our hands on it? By Q4 this year, apparently -- at least according to the Bluetooth SIG. Steve Ballmer emphasizes importance of the cloud, Google pretty much does likewise

Apple patent proposes locked ads in video content
A newly-exposed Apple patent application suggests that the company has been contemplating the prospect of ad-supported video. In particular the filing documents a way of locking down content so that segments are inaccessible until certain ad blocks have been watched. Viewers would only be able to fast-forward, for example, up until a bar on a timeline representing the furthest of the unwatched ads.

Microsoft Courier to use Tegra 2, ship late 2010
Microsoft's dual-screen Courier tablet has had more details leaked on Friday that detail its capabilities. The book-like device has had more concrete hardware details and should be powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 250 and should be relatively portable. Despite the second touchscreen, it would be lighter than an iPad and weigh just over one pound and would still be under an inch thick; the footprint would be that of a 5-by-7-inch photo when shut.

WWDC dates in flux?
Apple likes to schedule its events in secret. The last few WWDCs were marked in Mosone's corporate calendars as generic "Corporate Events". The same with Apple's events at the adjacent Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Luckily, not too many huge conventions are scheduled in secret, so it makes finding Apple's events a little easier.
We, like many other sites, saw the saw the late June, early July corporate event as being a likely time place for WWDC. But, with a recent change to the calendar (and the removal of Sun's JavaOne conference - wow!) it looks like WWDC might have changed datesor even *gasp* changed venues.

Rambus gets partial win in patent fight with NVIDIA
Rambus late Thursday achieved a partial win in its ongoing patent dispute with NVIDIA. While an International Trade Commission decision in January found that NVIDIA had infringed on three of Rambus' patents for memory technology, a US Patent & Trademark Office verdict this week said that one of the Rambus patents was invalid and partially invalidated a second patent. NVIDIA plans to appeal the decision on the remaining patent.

AT&T tightening eco-friendly requirements for phones
AT&T in a quiet update has revealed that it has started to clamp down on the environmental standards for its phones. Starting this year and culminating in 2011, the company now expects that at least three quarters of the phones it sells will use 65 percent or more recyclable material. These companies will also have to reduce the amount of packaging they use, reduce the level of toxic materials to ROHS levels, and use ethically sourced materials that avoid trouble spots like the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Nvidia hat seinen aktuellsten Grafiktreiber der Version 196.75 von seinen Webseiten entfernt. Grund sind sporadische Ausfälle der Lüftersteuerung, die Nvidia in seinen Supportforen bereits als Problem nennt. In the real (not torrenting) world, you have to pay to get video content. Whether that is by watching ads on Hulu or paying iTunes $1.99 per episode for TV, the content makers need to get paid. Any other system isn't going to work in the long run.

Rambus and NVIDIA patent dispute gets a little closer to a resolution
We're just a few tech-related legal cases away from changing our name to Enpatent, and the latest to push us that little bit closer is yet another ruling in the long and drawn-out battle between Rambus and NVIDIA. Sexist computers: male voices are apparently harder to recognize than female ones
Researchers up at the University of Edinburgh have determined that the male voice is harder for voice recognition software to pick up and understand than its female counterpart. This conclusion was reached after telephone conversation recordings were run through a battery of tests, which revealed that men seem to say "umm" and "err" more often, while also identifying that the greatest difficulties arise with words that sound similar and can arise in the same context, such as "him" and "them." Apple today announced that the iPad would be available from April 3rd (not the March 26th that'd been speculated) and late April for the 3G models in the US. Global availability (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK) won't be until Late April as well.

Apple iPad may stall move to SSDs
Apple's impending launch of the iPad may hamper the ability of other companies to use solid-state drives, those within the hard drive business claimed on Friday. The company reportedly already consumes as much as a third of all supplies of NAND flash memory to make iPhones and iPods, and the addition of a third primarily flash-based product could tighten supplies further. iPad ab 3. April in USA - Europa erst Ende April
Apple hat den Verkaufsstart des iPad für den 3. April angekündigt. Zu diesem Datum soll die Wi-Fi-Version des iPad allerdings erstmal nur in den USA erhältlich sein, für die Länder Australien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Japan, Italien, Kanada, Schweiz und Spanien plant Apple den Verkaufsstart für Ende April. Dann allerdings soll es in diesen Ländern gleich beide Varianten, die Wi-Fi- wie auch die 3G-Ausführung zu kaufen geben.
In den USA nimmt Apple ab 12. März Vorbestellungen für das iPad an. Hierzulande müssen wir uns noch bis in den April gedulden, erst dann werden auch die Preise für den Vertrieb in Europa veröffentlicht. Die Dollarpreise sind ja seit der Einführung bekannt, das iPad wird in den USA in der Wi-Fi-Version als 16GB-Modell für 499 US-Dollar, als 32GB-Modell für 599 US-Dollar und als 64GB-Modell für 699 US-Dollar erhältlich sein.
Der Start für Apples virtuellen Buchladen iBookstore ist ebenfalls für den 3. April in den USA vorgesehen, weitere Länder sollen dann im Laufe

Panasonic leaks Lumix G2, G10 with touchscreens
Panasonic has inadvertently revealed its plans for next week by briefly posting details of two new Micro Four Thirds cameras on its own website. The Lumix G2 and G10 together would both keep to the DSLR-style body of the G1/GH1 and would have 12-megapixel sensors, 3-inch swivel LCDs and 720p recording much like their predecessors. Erlaubt Apple in Zukunft kostenpflichtige Updates für iPhone-Software?
Verkauft man momentan Software im App Store und veröffentlicht ein Update, so lässt sich dieses von bestehenden Käufern kostenlos beziehen. Es gibt keine Möglichkeit, für Neukunden den Vollpreis zu verlangen und für bisherige Benutzer einen günstigeren Upgradepreis festzulegen. One of the discussions that arise anytime we bring up a new graphics card from ATI or NVIDIA is about which company has the better drivers. Well, this should help sway the argument a little bit. It would seem StarCraft II Beta players were among the first to notice low frame rates while using the latest drivers from NVIDIA, and further digging has uncovered that the automated fan-controlling part of said firmware was failing to act as intended. Gartner: PC-Markt wächst 2010 um 20 Prozent

Mac Benchmarks adds late 2009 iMacs, MacBook to ratings
Primate Labs has updated its Mac Benchmark chart, adding recent Macs to the list. The chart is a compilation of Mac-based performance scores generated from user-submitted Geekbench results. It uses results from Macs with standard processors that have not been modified with upgrades, overclocked processors, or Hackintoshes, using at least 512MB of RAM. Who knows what's actually housed in the device, but judging by the accompanying placard, MSI is playing the aesthetic card with this one. Designed as both a PC and a decoration for the home, it's certainly pleasing on the eye. And like the sign says, "don't try to put in toast" -- cute, but we'd rather that line had a commitment to releasing this sucker. Or a price range. Or some hint as specs. Microsoft's Pure, Turtle pegged for May/June launch
More details about Microsoft's Pure and Turtle phones have emerged tonight as part of a detailed leak from two sources. They now claim that the phones are due to reach Verizon in May or June and, unlike the path taken by Google with the Nexus One, will be sold in Verizon shops. Despite being made by Sharp, however, they may only end up carrying Microsoft and Verizon badging.

Apple files for patents covering notebook cooling tech
The US Patent Office is currently reviewing several of Apple's applications detailing technology for cooling and heat dissipation. One filing, initially submitted in September of 2008, describes a system for cooling devices using flow sensors. The technology is designed to help reduce heat by limiting the performance characteristics or using active cooling systems.

Microsoft talks Windows Phone 7 Series development ahead of GDC: Silverlight, XNA, and no backward compatibility
Microsoft is keen on unveiling the meat of its developer story around Windows Phone 7 Series at MIX10 in less than two weeks' time, but with GDC coming up next week, they're figuring that now is a good time to start dropping hints -- they'll want to be capturing the collective imagination of the gaming industry, after all, what with that Xbox Live integration they've got going on. Canon captures your coffee in a 70-200mm telephoto lens

AT&T and Verizon drive largest industry growth in 3 years
The wireless industry has shown the largest growth in three years, adding a total of approximately 5.9 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to a Wireless Intelligence report. AT&T and Verizon took the lion's share of new customers, sharing approximately 4.9 million new subscribers.

MeeGo repository going public later this month, coming to Nokia N900
Valtteri Halla -- Nokia employee and one-half of MeeGo's Technical Steering Group -- has blogged up a storm this week about the first baby steps that'll get the platform off the ground from its Moblin and Maemo roots, and from the sounds of things, we'll be able to get our first glimpse at it on production hardware before the month's out. Currently, the plan is to open up MeeGo's code repository to all comers "by the end of this month," targeting both Atom boards and the N900. Wikipedia: Coming to an iPhone/iPad/iPod search near you

Here's some more interesting information from the 3.2 SDK while we wait for the developer site to come back up. It isn't a biggie like Bing, you will be able to set your search to something besides Google in the search bar of iPad's Safari.
Right now, the two options besides Google are Wikipedia and Yahoo but plugins *could* be developed to do things like Amazon and Bing searches directly from the search bar in the Safari browser.

Apple may soon allow for in-app paid upgrades, as indicated by an iTunes dialog posted on Twitter by developer Fraser Speirs. Taipei gets 1,000-strong fleet of WiMAX-equipped taxis
Looking for something else to be envious of now that in-flight WiFi is starting to be more readily available? Then look no farther than Taipei, which has just announced the roll-out of a 1,000-strong fleet of WiMAX-equipped taxis. Alright, so a short cab ride might not send you into the same sort of internet withdrawl that a five hour flight does, but we're not ones to turn down mobile broadband when it crops up in places normally reserved for a bit of down-time or "conversation." Best of all, the in-taxi WiMAX will apparently be free during the initial stage, although VMAX Telcom hasn't yet decided if it will charge a fee in the future. USmart's MC-1 claims 'world's smallest' title, certainly wins over our hearts
Some people have soft spots for puppies and panda bears; we have them for tiny laptops. Claiming to be the world's smallest computer, USmart's 4.8-inch MC-1 is about the size of a man's wallet yet manages to pack the guts of a netbook. That's right in that tiny little chassis is a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of on-board storage. What it doesn't have is some sort of fan; when we put the little guy in our hand it was quite toasty. Wondering how in the world one would navigate Windows XP on such a small screen?
