Freenet-Chef Spoerr behält sein Amt

Hoshino debuts "biodegradable" FD-300 flash drive

It's far from the first company to attempt to make a more environmentally-friendly flash drive, but given the near disposable nature of them these days, that's not exactly a bad thing. NASA might bring plasma rocket to ISS for testing

Ad Astra's VASIMR plasma rocket is about ready for testing, only problem is it requires the vacuum of space to do it in. NASA is now considering taking the rocket up to the International Space Station, clipping it on and firing her up -- perhaps even using it to reposition the station. Karmazin promises interoperable Sirius / XM radios in less than 9 months

Swarm robots invade UK conference, lets hope they're all accounted for

Apples iPhone-App-Verbotsliste nur für GPS
Es ging ein verständnisloses Raunen durch die Gemeinschaft der Apple-Fans als die Geschichte fast wie eine Verschwörungstheorie durch den Äther ging. Apple habe angeblich in das iPhone OS 2.0 eine Funktion integriert, die ab und zu die installierten Apps mit einer Verbotsliste auf einem Apple-Server abgleicht und eventuelle Störer deaktiviert. Universal's latest iTunes competitor - Total Music
Universal Music appears to have another string in its series of plans to create alternatives to iTunes, now planning a free, ads-funded streaming music service called Total Music.
Total Music was Universal Music Group's move to work with other major labels in order to offer bundled music subscriptions with MP3 players, with payment for access included in the cost of the device.
The plan fell foul of the US Department of Justice, and was quietly put into mothballs (it seems) in order to stave off an anti-trust investigation.

True or false, this year or next, whatever - the rumoured iPhone nano story just won't go away, and now it looks like at least one third party developer's working away at products custom-built for such a device.
The Daily Mail this week broke news that Apple plans to introduce a smaller, less well-featured iPhone nano, proposing this would appear in time for Christmas and would be made available to O2's pay-as-you-go customers.
Naturally, a chorus of derision met this report, with Apple watchers rejecting the whole notion of such a plan - 'why would Apple want to cannibalise iPhone 3G sales?', they asked?

Lenovo meldet Zuwachs bei Umsatz und Gewinn

HTC dementiert Verspätung seines Android-Handys
HTC hat einem Bericht widersprochen, wonach das Unternehmen nicht wie geplant noch in diesem Jahr sein erstes Mobiltelefon mit Googles Handybetriebssystem Android in den Handel bringen wird. In einer Erklärung teilt das Unternehmen mit, dass es "mit Spannung den Launch des ersten Android-basierten Gerätes im vierten Quartal" erwartet. Auch Nutzer von Windows kommen mittlerweile in den Genuss von Apples Software-Aktualisierungen. Zwar startete man diesen Service mit heftiger Kritik, mittlerweile ist es jedoch etwas ruhiger geworden. IBM kürzt Gehälter in der Chipfertigung
IBM hat laut einem Bericht der Burlington Free Press einigen Mitarbeitern in der Chipfertigung an den Standorten in New York und Vermont Gehaltskürzungen angekündigt. Den im Schichtbetrieb arbeitenden Angestellten soll ein Aufschlag von 20 Prozent gestrichen werden, der nur in Teilen durch eine Erhöhung des Grundgehalts ausgeglichen wird. Nach Angaben des IBM-Sprechers Jeff Couture reduziert sich dadurch das Nettoeinkommen einiger Mitarbeiter ab Anfang 2009 um bis zu zehn Prozent.

Mit "Snowl" haben die Mozilla Labs den Prototypen einer Firefox-Erweiterung vorgestellt, die beliebige Arten von Online-Nachrichten im Browser zusammenzuführt. Der Prototyp unterstützt zunächst nur RSS/Atom-Feeds sowie Twitter-Postings - weitere sollen folgen. Das Ziel ist, irgendwann alle Nachrichten unabhängig von der Quelle und dem genutzten Protokoll - E-Mail, Newsfeed, Social-Networking-Site und eventuell auch Messaging-Systeme - zusammenzuführen und dem Anwender wie eine Zeitung oder eine personalisierte Version von Google News zu präsentieren.

HP plant Touchscreen-Notebooks
Gegenüber dem Wall Street Journal hat Phil McKinney, Chef der Laptop-Sparte bei HP, zu Protokoll gegeben, das Unternehmen werde innerhalb der nächsten 18 Monate ein Notebook mit Touchscreen auf den Markt bringen. "Touch" sei die bevorzugte Eingabemethode, gerade auch für technisch nicht versierte Anwender. Zwar gibt es mittlerweile schon einige Desktop-Rechner mit Touchscreen-Funktionen, der Notebook-Markt ist in dieser Beziehung jedoch noch weitgehend unbeleckt. Dell hat nach eigenen Angaben die CO2-Neutralität erreicht und damit sein im September 2007 gestecktes Ziel, den Ausstoß von Klimagasen bis Ende 2008 auf Null zu reduzieren. Dafür hat das Unternehmen zuletzt jährlich 3 Milliarden Dollar in grüne Energiequellen investiert, darunter Windkraftanlagen in den USA, China und Indien. Stromsparen lautet heutzutage die Devise, gerade bei Monitoren und Druckern ist deshalb oberstes Gebot, diese bei Verlassen des Arbeitsplatzes auszuschalten. Mac OS X 10.5.5 mit über 100 Fehlerkorrekturen
Das nächste Update für Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5.5, nähert sich der Fertigstellung. Nur eine Woche nachdem Apple eine Testversion (9F5) an die Entwickler verteilt hat, gibt es nun eine neue Version (9F9). 8 idiots bought the $1000 image
The LA Times blog is reporting that the infamous, limited edition "I am Rich" application was purchased by six Americans, one French and one German. That's right. Vista not selling nearly a well as Micosoft says
Those pesky business customers, they just won't get on board with the Vista program, it sounds like. According to HP, the vast majority of the computers it sells (and tallies) are actually running XP even though they report every sale as a Vista sale.
"From the 30th of June, we have no longer been able to ship a PC with a XP license," said Jane Bradburn, Market Development Manager, Commercial Notebooks for HP Australia.
"However, what we have been able to do with Microsoft is ship PCs with a Vista Business licence but with XP pre-loaded. That is still the majority of business computers we are selling today."

iPhone Production at full speed
According to Techcrunch, Foxcon, who manufacturers the iPhone for Apple, will have pushed its production to 800,000 units a week. It is very near to maximum capacity. To go any further will require converting other production lines, which is quite complex.
If this speed is maintained, they will surpass 40 million unites per year.

Source : Hardware.frMicron announced a new range of SSD hard drives which obtain the speed of 250 MB/s in reading and writing. In the 2.5" format and destined for enterprise applications, they utilise multiple NAND SLC memory chips in parallel to obtain its speed. Its capacity will be from 16 to 128 GB.
For general consumers, the manufacturer offers disks based on MLC chips which also obtain 250 MB/s in reading, but only 100 MB/s in writing.

Firewire 1600 and 3200 Approved
Source : TGDailyIEEE has officially approved the Firewire 1600 and 3200 standards which theoretically provide 204 and 408 MB/s respectively. These new standards remain compatible with Firewire 400 and 800, most likely retaining the connector of the later.
The path is now finally open for manufacturers to be able to offer products compatible with these new standards.
The specifications will be officially released in October, thus before USB 3.0 which will not be out until the end of the year.
So the new Firewire will for a short while be the fastest on paper, as USB 3.0 should obtain 4.8 Gbit/s (615 MB/s)
