Deadmund does it right: PlayStation Move and 1:1 swordplay, hands-on (video)
Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest may be built on the mini-game mechanics of last year's Sports Champions, but its whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We hit up Sony at E3 2011 to see if Deadmund could out-fence the Jedi in a duel of 1:1 swordplay and on-rails battle. What we found was surprisingly responsive. Sony reveals midrange VPL-HW30ES 3D projector on the way next month
We all know you deserve to live the projector lifestyle, but fitting Sony's first home projector with 3D -- the $10k (MSRP) VPL-VW90ES that launched last fall -- into one's budget might be a little tough. To that end, the company's launching the "affordable" VPL-HW30ES for the rest of us this year, featuring some of the same 240Hz SXRD tech in a cheaper package. There's no word yet on pricing or a ship date here in the US, but it's confirmed shipping in Europe and Japan next month with a pricetag of 370,000 yen ($4,626 US)

Numbers on the iPhone: A quick look

Apple registers 50 web domains following WWDC introductions
Apple has registered 50 new domain names in the aftermath of its WWDC keynote, according to DotWeekly. All of them are related to products revealed this week, including iCloud, iOS 5 and OS X Lion. Like some other high-profile companies, Apple casts a wide net when registering domains in order to prevent rivals and scam artists from drawing page views.

Magellan offers new iPhone app with "lifetime" maps
Magellan has released RoadMate App 2.0 for the iPhone. The new version of the app ($60, App Store) includes "lifetime" map updates for the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, as well as Magellan's Lifetime Traffic service. New features include reviews of local businesses through Yelp as well as local Google search.

Apple goes on a domain name shopping spree
Apple has bought at least 50 domain names in the last three days. While many of the domain names are related to features of Lion or iOS 5 that were introduced at WWDC on Monday, it's unlikely Apple will use most of the domain names as active URLs.
Instead, Apple probably just snapped them up to keep squatters from getting them. After all, it's got to be tiring going after every single person who buys a domain with one of your trademarks in it.

GE announces hybrid power plant of the (near) future
GE's legacy dates back over a century, but, despite its old age, the company's got a fresh outlook on the future of energy production (at least according to its PR department). Earlier this week, the outfit announced MetCap Energy Investments' plans to build a "first-of-its-kind" hybrid power plant, tapping GE's FlexEfficiency technology, which combines natural gas, wind, and solar thermal power. The plant, planned for completion in Turkey in 2015, will produce enough energy, according to GE, to power 600,000 homes, and could lead to plant efficiency gre

iCloud resurrects apps deleted from App Store
Apple's iCloud platform is allowing people to redownload apps that have technically disappeared from the App Store, experiments show. A given example is Tris, a Tetris clone pulled from the store almost three years ago. The title and download option should now appear in a person's Purchased list, assuming the app was downloaded before sales were halted.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Currencies
Currencies is one of my favorite iPhone apps, and Edovia released a version for OS X this week.
It works the same way as its iOS sibling. Clicking on the currency symbol next to each lets you switch among U.S. and Canadian dollars, yen, pounds and euros. Clicking back on the dollar amount brings up a keypad and you can enter the amount. Double-clicking on each number field will clear it.
The preferences will let you set your preferred keyboard shortcut and a currency refresh rate, though you can also refresh at any time with a keyboard shortcut or through the app.
There are a couple of drawbacks to desktop Currencies. The iPhone app has more than 130 currencies to choose from, but the desktop version has five at the moment. I suspect this will change very quickly. There

Schizo: Sony 3D Playstation Splitscreen Monitor

Die Frage wie es funktionieren soll, einen 3D Monitor in einen Splitscreen für zwei Leute zu verwandeln in dem beide Spieler etwas anderes sehen ist eigentlich einfach beantwortet. Wirkt aber wie Zauberei. Mit einer normalen Shutterbrille wird immer ein Auge kurz ausgeblendet, damit der 3D Effekt entsteht, beim Splitscreen bekommt quasi der eine Spieler nur die linken Augen, der andere nur die rechten. Das ganze läuft mit 240 Hz Rate und schickt 60fps 3D. Wir sind gespannt wann die ersten Spiele-Titel rauskommen die darauf ausgelegt sind.

Micosoft loses appeal in i4i case, has to pay $290 million
Microsoft on Thursday lost its final appeal in i4i's patent lawsuit against it over patents. The US Supreme Court upheld the verdict that Microsoft had copied i4i technology for XML code in Office and owed about $290 million. Microsoft said the ruling was "not what we had hoped for" but instead reinterpreted the loss as a proof of its call for patent defense improvement.

Banned apps back from beyond with iCloud
Miss your iDOS emulator, or another app that's been punted from the App Store? CDFXapps noticed that the App Store app on their iOS 5-enabled iPad gave them the option of redownloading the no-longer-available DOS emulation app. This is part of the new iCloud feature, already in place, that lets you re-grab your iTunes purchases if you don't have them locally (very handy if you lose your machine or your hard drive dies).

Samsung puts out first 30nm DDR3 RAM upgrades for PCs
Samsung on Thursday pushed past a milestone by readying its 30 nanometer DDR3 RAM for off-the-shelf PCs. The 2GB and 4GB sticks will keep power consumption low, about 66 percent less than a 60nm chip, but still hit a 1.6Mbps peak bandwidth. They're considered an option not just to expand RAM but to possibly draw out the battery life of a notebook using older memory.

There's certainly no shortage of options available for those looking to record their death-defying (or not-so-death-defying) adventures, but Replay XD has now rolled out what it claims is the "smallest and lightest full HD action-camera on the market." Sony answers more PlayStation Vita questions: no to video output, yes to region-free
We heard earlier at E3 that the PlayStation Vita might be able to do video output via the multiport on the bottom of the handheld, but it's now looking like that won't be the case -- at least according to the official FAQ that Sony has made available. Nokia chief: Apple was what allowed Android to happen
Nokia chief Stephen Elop during a speech at the Open Mobile Summit said iPhone had effectively been responsible for making Android. He argued that Apple had "created Android" or, at a minimum, had "created the conditions necessary to create Android." May Apple sales estimated up 87 percent year-over-year
Trends amongst Apple's Taiwanese suppliers suggest that the company's May sales were up 87 percent year-over-year, according to Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. If the figure is accurate, it could be an impressive showing, a 10 percent sequential increase over April versus an average 2.2 percent month-to-month change. That performance is, however, relative to another earlier White estimate, suggesting 100 percent year-over-year growth in April.

Analyst: Apple kann Absatz im Mai um 10 Prozent steigern

Motorola Photon 4G Hands-On

Bei unserer derzeitigen 4G-Lage (mau) dürften wir wohl in absehbarer Zeit kein Motrola Photon 4G hierzulande erblicken, aber das soll einen nicht davon abhalten sich schon mal drauf vorzubreiten. Das Photon 4G kommt in den USA im Sommer bei Sprint, hat einen 4,3 Zoll Bildschirm, NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz Dual-Core, 1GB RAM und 16GB Speicher und läuft mit Gingerbread. 8 Megapixel Kamera dazu und HDMI und USB-Verbindung. Hands-on with Nyko's Zoom Kinect and extended battery packs for the 3DS
We gave you a glimpse of Nyko's 2011 accessories lineup earlier this week, and today we got some quality time with the company's gear at E3 2011. We tried out Zoom Kinect, a set of lenses for Microsoft's favorite sensor bar that lets those residing in diminutive domiciles be the controller without rearranging their furniture. Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou says Apple products are "very difficult to make"
Hon Hai, parent company of Foxconn, is blaming Apple for its poor financial performance over the past two quarters. Chairman Terry Gou confirmed the Chinese company invested heavily in its manufacturing plants to keep up with Apple's demand. He said Apple devices were "very difficult" to make.

Sprint iPhone in late testing, sources claim
The first Sprint iPhone is currently in an advanced testing stage, sources claim. Externally the model is said to resemble the iPhone 4, which could support the idea that the next-generation iPhone will be evolutionary rather revolutionary. Some reports have indicated that Apple wants the next iPhone to use a hybrid receiver, capable of operating on both GSM and CDMA networks. If you're a console racer and you own an Xbox 360 then you know Forza Motorsport is among the best, but you also know that your selection of compatible controllers has left a bit to be desired. Samsung outs 1TB Spinpoint M8 hard drive for notebooks
Samsung this week revealed an internal hard drive for notebooks that sports two 500GB platters. The 1TB Spinpoint M8 is 9.5mm tall to fit in most notebooks. Samsung used its advanced format technology to achieve the high data storage density. Apple hat seine Regeln zu In-App-Abonnements stillschweigend geändert, wie MacRumors als erster Blog bemerkt hat. HP nennt Erscheinungsdatum des TouchPad

Hooks have been discovered in the iOS 5 beta for several undisclosed features. Video of iOS 5 on an iPhone 3GS and a 4 side by side
The folks at AppleRumors Italia did a side-by-side video comparison of iOS 5 on both the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4. As you can see in the video, the two models perform similarly with only a small amount of lag apparent on the iPhone 3GS during certain tasks, like loading a complex web page.
The biggest difference is the lack of some features, like HDR and photo editing, on the older iPhone 3GS. Though this is only one video, the results are encouraging for those still rocking a third-generation iPhone.

Apple alters in-app subscription terms, relaxes price controls
Apple has modified its subscription policy to remove the pricing requirement that forced content providers to sell in-app subscriptions at the same price it sells them outside the app. These older terms and conditions were supposed to go into effect on June 30, and caused a stir when they were first introduced and used to reject apps like Sony Reader from the App Store.
The older subscription terms stated:

Irgendwie ist uns das Boogie Board sofort sympathisch gewesen. Ein 8,5 Zoll und ein 10,5 Zoll Ding, auf dem man mit einem Stift oder den Händen, wie auf einer Schiefertafel schreiben kann, nur eben, dass es elektronisch ist, und mit druckempfindlichen LCDs funktioniert. Das einzige Mal bei dem wohl Strom verbraucht wird, ist beim Löschen der Malversuche, und das halten die beiden Knopfbatterien wohl 50.000 Mal aus. iMac Graphic FW Update 2.0 fixes startup, wake problems
Apple has issued a new firmware patch for iMacs, simply titled iMac Graphic FW Update 2.0. The code fixes problem which caused computers to hang during the startup process or when waking from sleep. The file is just 699KB, but requires that an iMac be running Mac OS X 10.6.7.

"The Mothership has landed in Cupertino," says Cupertino Mayor Gilbert Wong. Apple backs down on in-app subscription pricing
Apple has suddenly and without fanfare thrown out its App Store guidelines on in-app subscription pricing, reports note. Later this month Apple was set to begin enforcing a recent policy on subscriptions, requiring that any outside app subscription options be matched by in-app ones. Of special worry to publishers, though, was an insistence that in-app options cost the "same price or less," even though Apple claims a 30 percent cut of App Store revenue. Leak shows Dell tablet with split, slide-out QWERTY keyboard
Dell gave away plans for another but more unique tablet design late Wednesday through a leak. The unnamed seven-inch model would have a slide-out keyboard like Samsung's Sliding PC, but it would address a common complaint of tablets by splitting the layout so it could be used for thumb typing. Motorola apologizes for early Xoom 4G notification
Motorola has apologized to what it calls "a very small number" of owners of Verizon's 3G version of the Xoom for mistakenly sending notification that the 4G modification for the tablet was ready. The company said the emails were sent in error. Unspecified production issues forced Motorola to launch on Verizon with a 3G version of the Xoom, with a promise that the device would be upgraded free of charge at a later date. Motorola did not specify when the 4G upgrade would be available, except as a date "in the near future."

Apple to drop DUI checkpoint apps like a bad habit
In a move that's bound to get at least a few MADD moms smiling, Apple's officially decided to block apps that encourage drunk driving. Section 22.8 of the newly revised App Store Review Guidelines reads:

Apple veröffentlicht Firmware-Update für iMac Mid 2011
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute ein Update für die aktuelle iMac-Modelle veröffentlicht. Das iMac Graphic Firmware Update 2.0 behebt ‘rar auftretende’ Probleme beim Aufstarten oder aus dem Ruhezustand Erwachen der aktuellen iMacs. In einem neu online gestellten Support-Dokument beschreibt Apple die Symptome auch als «weisser oder grauer Bildschirm» während dem starten/aufwachen des Macs oder als «vertikale Linien auf dem Bildschirm» während der Benutzung des Computers. Wie immer darf der Mac während dem Firmware-Update-Prozess nicht abgeschalten werden. Das Update ist knapp 700 KB gross, benötigt Mac OS X 10.6.7 und lässt sich auf den betroffenen Geräten über die Software-Aktualisierung oder auf Apple.com herunterladen.

Mac 101: Using Keynote as Motion in a bind
On this trip to WWDC I packed light. One backpack, a MacBook Air and a camera light. I haven't had my Air for very long, and I've been trying to install only essential software on it; seeing what I can do without. I've been impressed enough with iMovie's capabilities (once you get past what I consider to be a terrible UI), so I didn't bother loading Final Cut Studio. I forgot, however, to whip up some "bumpers" (intro/outro) for our videos before I left. I'm used to using Apple's Motion to handle that, but found myself looking for an easy alternative. The solution I found was Keynote, and a grand solution it is.

Nintendo bringing 'Red Flare' 3DS, new Wii package to Japan this summer
Now that we're all sitting on summer's doorstep, Nintendo has decided to add a little heat to its 3DS lineup, with a new 'Red Flare' handheld, coming to Japan next month. Offering a sanguine alternative to the Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black variants, this little fireball will retail for ¥25,000 (about $312) when it hits Japanese stores on July 14th -- just in time for the release of Star Fox 64 3D. Looki looki, was haben wir denn hier? Bei Dell träumt man von einem Slider-Tablet mit geteilter QWERTZ-Tastatur, so wie es die Kollegen aus Cupertino und Redmond gerade gerade auf Displays ausprobieren. Gute Idee? Bei 7" sollte das Tippen damit zumindest sehr bequem vonstatten gehen. Zu den technischen Features lässt sich im Moment leider noch nicht mehr sagen, außer dass sich auf der Rückseite eine Kamera befindet. The latest salvo in the ongoing Lodsys patent dispute against third-party App Store developers has just been fired. The online portfolio of designer Carl Jeffers, noted by ZDNet's Stephen Chapman, has tipped information on an Apple health campaign for its designers, at least in the UK. DUI checkpoint apps no longer welcome on App Store
Don't raise a glass to Apple just yet. New App Store Review Guidelines explicitly ban iOS apps that identify certain DUI checkpoints. Specifically, the important passage reads:

As noted by 9to5 Mac, the Find My Mac setup is available through the Mail, Contacts, and Calendars setting in System Preferences. Simply click "Allow" and your Mac is ready to be tracked.
Once enabled you can use any web browser or iOS device to track your Mac. When found you can choose to play a sound or send a message, remote lock the Mac, or remote wipe the Mac. Remote locking and wiping will prevent you from locating the Mac again however. The

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Mac App Store
Feral Interactive, who recently reached a milestone of 50,000 paid downloads from the Mac App Store in just six months, have today announced the availability of LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga on the store. Google Chrome 12 offers safer downloads, hardware acceleration, more
Google has updated its Chrome browser to version 12. Perhaps the coolest feature of Chrome 12 is the support for hardware-accelerated 3D CSS. Any websites (like this one) and web apps that use 3D CSS effects will now have those effects rendered on your page with the help of your computer's graphics card, which should allow for faster and smoother 3D effects.

One of the long-standing frustrations for anyone who's tried to edit blog posts or web documents using Mobile Safari is the absence of support for the HTML5 contentEditable attribute. The contentEditable element attribute, which began as an Internet Explorer 5.5 feature and later found its way into most modern browsers, is part of the suite of tools that makes it possible for Google Documents and other inline editors to do their rich-text WYSIWIG editing magic.

Survey: Apple, Google most 'reputable' companies worldwide
A study conducted by the Reputation Institute has found that Google and Apple are the two top companies consumers like, trust and respect worldwide, with Google just edging out Apple and the other top companies by fractions of a point. The survey, which polled 48,000 consumers across 15 countries, found that car and electronics or technology firms were consistently ranked highly, with only toy maker LEGO and entertainment giant Disney breaking the pattern within the top 10.
