iOS 5 for iPad images suggest higher-resolution display
Although the displays on the iPad and iPad 2 are pretty darned nice, TUAW readers and bloggers alike have wished for a Retina display-like screen on our magic tablets. Now a tipster at TechUnwrapped has pointed out that several images found in Newsstand -- an iOS 5 feature -- and the Twitter framework are suggesting a possible higher-resolution display for an upcoming iPad 3.

Google Sync adds mail server search, appointment confirmation to native iOS apps
Google Sync has pushed Gmail messages, calendar updates, and contacts to iOS since its launch in 2009, but this half-baked solution previously lacked some key functionality. Beginning today, users can finally perform mail server searches and confirm appointment requests from their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Adobe drops AIR for Linux due to shift to mobile
Adobe's Flash plans have shifted in the past day as it dealt a blow to Linux while simultaneously bolstering webOS. In a statement, the company's Dave McAllister said the company was shedding support for AIR on Linux from the 2.7 update onwards. He pointed out that Linux had remained at about one percent market share in recent years where Android and iOS had both been growing rapidly, leaving little reason to support Linux on the desktop where mobile was moving much faster and also shifting towards some non-Flash code, such as on Apple's platform.

BBC iPlayer app to launch outside UK this year, Western Europe first
BBC's iPlayer is set to begin the first phase of its global rollout later this summer, according to The Guardian. The first phase of the rollout will target Western European countries and cost subscribers around €7 (US$10) a month, though the exact price is yet to be decided. Last December we told you that a subscription-based iPlayer was coming to US markets. That is still happening, but the BBC is first using a Western European rollout to make sure they get the service right before expanding it to other countries. MyTVRemote transmitter for iPhone gets overhaul
Ryz Media has redesigned the IR transceiver that works with the company's MyTVRemote app to turn an iPhone into a multifunction remote control. The new hardware has been given a designer look and feel and is available in several colors. The performance of the transceiver has also been improved.

OWC intros Mercury Electra 6G SSD
Other World Computing has launched a new upgrade SSD, the Mercury Electra 6G. The drive is SandForce-based, and designed for SATA 3.0 ports running up to 6Gbps. This allows sustained read rates of 556MBps, or slightly slower writes at 523MBps. Both speeds are said to be up to seven times faster than stock PC hard drives.

Senate bill requires consent for Android, iPhone geolocation
Democrat Senators Al Franken and Richard Blumenthal on Wednesday put forward a bill that would require explicit consent for geolocation data. Apple, Google, and others with more than 5,000 devices on the market would have to both ask permission as well as take steps to shield the data and delete it once it's no longer needed. Franken argued legislation was necessary since there was a distinct difference between location info for a 911 call and the kind that could be used to stalk someone or leak data to third-party marketers.

Sony updates Vaio C series with subtler shades, E models go Sandy Bridge
Sony's mainstream E and C series of laptops are getting a bit of an update with some new color options and updated processors in the case of E series. Mice have been a computing mainstay since pretty close to the dawn of the PC, but they don't offer much in terms of information about the on-screen data you're interacting with. What if they featured physical feedback to tip you off to things like the size of the files you're moving around? Two German students have answered that question likely before you even had a chance to ask. iPhone 4 flash orders scaled back, back iPhone 5 redesign
Part supplier leaks on Wednesday supported beliefs that Apple redesigning the camera flash for the iPhone 5. The company has reportedly "greatly reduced" the number of orders from Philips for the LED flashes used in the iPhone 4 over the past one to two months. AppleInsider's historically accurate source couldn't confirm talk of a switch to a Taiwanese supplier but said it could be a sign Philips wasn't being used for the next iPhone, or at least not as-is.

Chinese court hands down prison sentences to iPad 2 leakers
A court in Shenzhen, China has sentenced three people to prison over leaking iPad 2 information, says the Wall Street Journal. The instigator is said to have been Xiao Chengsong, general manager of Shenzhen MacTop Electronics, who offered former Hon Hai/Foxconn worker Hou Pengna 20,000 yuan plus MacTop discounts in exchange for iPad 2 specifications. Hou in turn paid Lin Kecheng, an active Hon Hai R&D worker, for digital images of the tablet's back cover in September 2010. The product's launch was still several months away, on March 11th.

News: Three jailed in China over iPad 2 design theft
Three people in China have been convicted of violating commercial secrets relating to the theft of the iPad 2’s design, according to an AFP report. Citing the Guangzhou Daily, the report states that the theft took place late last year at a plant run by Foxconn, and allowed for the manufacture and sale of counterfeit iPad 2 units prior to the product’s official introduction. There is absolutely no shortage of alarm clocks for the iPhone, but I have recently tried and really like Talking Weather Alarm. Yes, it wakes you up to a variety of alarm sounds or anything from your playlist, but it also reads the local weather forecast to you and gives you a smattering of news headlines. The app has a light price tag of just US$0.99.
Talking Weather Alarm is far preferable to those sometimes flaky hotel wake-up calls and the other iPhone alarms that get you out of bed but don't do as good a job of keeping you informed.

Kurz vor dem WWDC-Start breitete sich ein Gerücht über die 'iCloud auf der Time Capsule' aus. Obwohl's logisch klang, stellte es sich als völliger Quatsch raus. Als eines der letzten (großen) Länder bekommt nun auch die USA das offizielle Apple-Angebot für 'Unlocked-iPhones' im GSM-Netz. Ein großer Deal war dies nicht, weil das konkurrierende T-Mobile-Netz aufgrund einer anderen Frequenz am iPhone so oder so ohne UMTS auskommen muss. Wenn ich noch einen einzigen unreflektierten Artikel mehr, über die "häufigsten-Passwörter-von-iPhone-Nutzern" lesen muss, blutigen bluten mir die Augen. Google Sync on iPhone adds server searching, calendar edits
Google on Wednesday upgraded its Google Sync framework to give iOS users much more control over remote events. Apple's built-in mail app will now search the Gmail server for older messages much like it does for regular e-mail providers. Users can also now finally accept, turn down, or edit Google Calendar events from the app and have the changes honored on the web or other devices.

Next generation iPad / iPhone GPU licensed to other manufacturers
Imagination Technologies, makers the PowerVR graphics processor found in the iPhone and iPad, has announced that its next generation PowerVR Series 6 architecture has been licensed by six lead partners: ST-Ericson, Texas Instruments and MediaTek. The remaining three partners are yet to be announced.

US DOJ greenlights Google's $900 million bid for Nortel patents; Apple, RIM also interested
It looks like Google will be able to bid on Nortel's patent portfolio after all, now that the Department of Justice has weighed in on the matter. According to the Wall Street Journal, El Goog's $900 million bid has passed a governmental antitrust review, just a few days ahead of next week's auction. Rivals like Microsoft, AT&T and Verizon had previously filed complaints with the DOJ, arguing that the sale of Nortel's 6,000 patents would give an unfair advantage to the auction's winner by providing it with a fresh arsenal for patent-infringement lawsuits. Apple updates support page with more "tap-friendly" layout
Apple's support web page has been re-designed with several large, easily-clicked and tapped areas, less text and a more product-centerd focus. Here's a brief look at what's new.
The most obvious change is the page's layout. The text-heavy sidebars are gone from the main page, as is the "All Products" drop-down menu. Now, a horizontal row of products dominates the top of the page. Support pages for the Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, iTunes and "other products" are a tap away.
Additionally, links to "Video Tutorials" and "Downloads" have been given a more prominent location, joining the "Manuals," "Tech Specs" and "Communities" jump off points from the previous design. Those pages are well-designed, too. For example, the

Apple lays plans for first Swedish Apple Store
Apple is looking to expand its retail chain to Sweden, a local publication says. Market.se attributes the information to landlords, who say that the store will be built in the capital city of Stockholm. Apple retail operates in relatively few countries so far: regions so far include Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Facebook preps 'secret' Instagram rival app for iPhone
A discovery Wednesday has shown that Facebook is developing a second iPhone app that would make it a prime contender to Instagram and other social photo apps. Nicknamed either Hovertown or WithPeople, the app would show both individual photos and events while exploiting the nearly 700 million-strong social network. Dear Aunt TUAW,
The "Purchased" area added to the iPhone "App Store" will show you every app you have ever bought, including the accidental purchase you've made.
I love that I can re-download anything I have bought in the past, but there are a few apps I want to permanently remove (throw-away) from my "purchased" area.
I just feel as though I am no longer in control of what I own.

Griffin on Wednesday shipped a wireless remote bridge for iPhone and iPod touch owners that promises a simpler link than most for controlling a home theater. Passcode stealing app banned by Apple
Apple clamped down on the Big Brother Security App and removed the passcode-stealing lockscreen app from the App Store. Daniel Amitay is the developer behind the Big Brother app which hit the headlines this week.
The controversial app uses its own lockscreen and grabs the passcodes users enter into the program. Amitay compiled this data and produced a shocking report that suggests many iOS users have weak passwords like 1234 and 0000.

Next Google Nexus may pack LTE, 720p 'monster' screen
Google's promised Nexus phone may be one of the most advanced phones ever when it ships this fall, according to a detailed rumor on Wednesday. The school district in Van Meter, Iowa has ditched their workbooks and replaced them with MacBooks in a four-year digital learning experiment.
John Carver, Superintendent of the Van Meter school district in Iowa, has taken a bold move into the realm of digital learning. In the 2009-2010 school year, the district handed out laptops to all its seventh to twelfth grade students. The school district signed a four-year lease agreement with Apple to provide the students with MacBook laptops. Verizon prolongs its free hotspot party on 4G LTE phones, but then what?

Imagination licenses PowerVR 6 tech, hints Apple onboard
Imagination Technologies hinted strongly at the roadmap for Apple and other mobile device makers late Tuesday with word that it had handed out the first licenses for PowerVR 6 series graphics. It confirmed that ST-Ericsson's future Nova chips, as well as later TI OMAP processors and unnamed hardware from MediaTek, would use the new technology. Tretroller konnten uns nie richtig kicken, vor allem weil die Relation zwischen Krafteinsatz und Geschwindkeit nicht wirklich befriedigend ist, aber auch weil man im Zweifelsfall einen trotteligen Eindruck macht. Acer collapses: tablet, netbook shipments cut by up to 60%
Acer signaled major trouble on Wednesday through both official and unofficial sources. Company chairman JT Wang said in a shareholder meeting that the company's forecast for tablet shipments was being cut by as much as 60 percent, dropping from an originally forecast 5-7 million Iconia Tabs in 2011 down to 2.5-3 million. Leaked information provided to TechCrunch suggests Facebook is prepping a photo-sharing app for the iPhone. From the description, the app is a mixture of Instagram with some of the location information and social sharing of Path and Color. A few surprises are also supposedly thrown into the mix.

Planning to replace that aging Blu-ray player with a Wii U? Not so fast. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says the gaming console won't play DVD or Blu-ray discs, due to patent licensing fees.

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Titus
Titus is a game that calls itself a "political simulator," featuring an agoraphobic watchmaker who decides to run for president in the crazy world of Wealland. If that description and the game's Tim Burton-esque aesthetic haven't won you over already, then you and I have very different tastes in gaming.
The actual gameplay is more about how well you do at minigames than actual strategy, but it's a fun affair, providing a tweaked parody of politics and that really interesting art style. Titus' main opponent is a mime, and through minigames that have you catching cash or Doodle Jumping-your way along, it's your goal to win the hearts (or at least the wallets) of your people.
Titus has achievements, but unfortunately it isn't directly Game Center enabled

Was hier so ein ganz klein wenig nach einem schiefgegangenen Steampunk-Experiment und reichlich klobig aussieht, heisst N-Control Avenger und ist eine Erweiterung und Spielhilfe für den XBox 360-Controller. Der Controller wird eingeklinkt und schon hat man besseren und schnelleren Zugriff auf Buttons, Joystick und Co. Auch wenn unsere US-Kollegen zunächst recht skeptisch waren, wollten sie ihren Controller schon nach kurzer Zeit eigentlich nicht mehr ohne N-Control Avenger benutzen, wenn da nicht der Preis wäre: 49 Dollar sind dann schon recht viel für so eine Spielprothese. Softwareaktualisierung gibt Hinweise auf neue AirPort Basisstationen
Gestern Abend stellte Apple über die Aktualisierungsverwaltung ein Update für das AirPort-Dienstprogrmm bereit. Die Applikation liegt nun in der Version 5.5.3 vor und ist 12,3 MB groß. DIY Virtual Boy arcade cabinet costs only a headache to play
As you may have noticed, we have a bit of a soft spot for Nintendo's other 3D device, the Virtual Boy -- despite its many, many flaws. So, it seems, does DIYer Tighe Lory, who liked the oddball console so much that he built an full-size arcade cabinet for it. Leben ohne Puls: Neues Ersatzherz mit Turbinentechnik schlägt nicht

Ist vielleicht eine leicht seltsame Vorstellung, aber in Zukunft kann man auch ohne Herzschlag weiterleben. Während fast alle bisherigen Kunstherzen das schlagende Herz nachmachen, kommt diese Doppelturbine ohne Puls aus, nur ein leises Brummen ist zu hören. Entwickelt am Texas Heart Institute hat eine Turbine als Herz den Vorteil, dass sie nur ein einfaches bewegliches Teil hat und deswegen ziemlich zuverlässig laufen dürfte. Einen erfolgreichen Versuch am Menschen mit Turbinenherz gibt es schon, zugelassen ist das neue Herz aber von der amerikanischen Zulassungsbehörde FDA nocht nicht.

Ron Johnson nahm ab dem Jahr 2000 seine Arbeiten bei Apple auf und wurde recht schnell zu einem unersetzlichen Mitglied im Bereich der Apple Retail Stores. Final Cut Pro X für nächste Woche erwartet

Die stimmbasierte Suche funktioniert bislang nur auf englisch und mit dem Chrome Browser, die bildbasierte auch mit anderen Browsern. Unsere ersten Versuche waren in Bezug auf die Bildersuche, bei der man ein Bild hochladen oder dessen URL angeben kann, noch nicht allzu überzeugend, so wurden zum Beispiel im Web bereits mehrfach vorhandene Bilder fast nie erkannt, wenn der Ausschnitt gewechselt wurde, aber schliesslich steht das Feature ja auch noch am Anfang.

Nintendo Wii U console shown off in its bright, minimalistic entirety
Nintendo hasn't been too keen on letting us mere mortals stroke the Wii U, as no amount of coins could unlock the console's cabinet at E3. Surprisingly though, Inside Games managed to get up close and personal to this white box outside its little cave, and then came home alive with a few clear shots. Mind you, there's hardly anything exciting here: we're just gazing at some air vents on the side and back, plus a few ports -- including HDMI -- on the latter. Report: Apple to kick off Back To School promo Wednesday
New information suggests that Apple will launch its annual Back to School promotion on Wednesday, and with a twist this year that would be seem to confirm previous rumors: instead of free-after-rebate iPod Touches, the company will instead give away $100 iTunes gift cards as part of the purchase, 9to5Mac is reporting. Stores will also be redecorated, including an alleged change to the store software selection.

iOS 5 jailbreak offers third-party Notification Center widgets
Jailbreakers have already cracked iOS 5's Notification Center widgets, according to 9to5Mac. Notification screen widgets are little apps -- or widgets -- that run in the new Notifications Center in iOS 5. iOS 5 will ship with two widgets, stocks and weather. However, as usual, the jailbreak community wants to push things forward faster than Apple does, and they've already come out with a host of third-party widgets.
MacStories has an excellent roundup of some of those custom Notification Center widgets but, as always, if you want to use them you'll need to jailbreak your iPhone. One of my favorites is

NEC launches 'green' 23-inch widescreen monitor
Audio-visual equipment maker NEC has introduced what it calls the "next generation" of desktop monitors, starting with the MultiSync EX231Wp-BK, a 23-inch LED backlit monitor capable of full HD (1920x1080) resolution using a PVA panel with high viewing angles (178 degrees both horizontally and vertically), a 3000:1 contrast ratio and featuring human and ambient light sensors to adjust the monitor's brightness to save power along with other energy-efficiency features.

Most common iOS passcodes discovered by developer
We're going to guess your passcode, the set of four numbers you use to get into your iPhone when you unlock it. Ready? Is it 1234? 0000? 1998?
If it's any of those, you may want to change it. A developer named Daniel Amitay runs an app called Big Brother Camera Security that uses its own in-app lockscreen, and he's anonymously been tracking the numbers used there. Thinking that the numbers chosen for that lockscreen are probably similar to the main iPhone lockscreen, he's released some information about what people use, shining some light on what are probably the most common four-digit iPhone lock codes.

Lenovo confirms Idea/Think tablets, no US phone until 2012
Lenovo's IdeaPad and ThinkPad tablets were confirmed by company president Rory Read in an interview that also had Lenovo keeping out of the US smartphone race for now. Both of the tablets would have 10-inch screens, ship with Android 3, and cost between $450 to $900 depending on the model, he told Dow Jones. The IdeaPad K1 should be ready by July and could be followed by the pro-oriented ThinkPad edition as soon as August.

BBC deploying field apps for reporters with iPhones, iPads
The BBC is developing a single app intended to allow its field reporters to file video, images and audio reports directly into the BBC News system from an iPhone or iPad, Journalism.co.uk reports. The new app, which will replace a hodge-podge of commercial apps like AudioBoo currently in use, will allow correspondents to broadcast live from an iPhone even using only a 3G signal.

DOJ OKs Google bid on Nortel patents, Apple still in talks
The US Department of Justice has approved Google's controversial bid on Nortel's patents, sources mentioned Tuesday evening. Officials had told the WSJ that the Android maker's patent ownership wouldn't raise competitive issues and accepted its terms, which would let it end existing agreements if it won the $900 million bid. Microsoft had objected and wanted existing terms to carry over since it already claimed to have a complete, free license for all of Nortel's patents.

AI competition pits Ms. Pac-Man against ghosts in the Manichean struggle of our time (video)
While the world breathlessly awaits the Pac-Man reality TV show, the University of Essex held a programming competition starring that other yellow chomper. The Ms. Pac-Man vs. Ghost Team contest pitted 13 competitors from nine different countries against one another, to see who could create the most elusive Ms. Pac-Man or the wiliest ghost gang. The participants coded routines for the titular hero or Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Sue, with organizers then running the programs against one another on the Java-based playing field. BBC reporters about to start broadcasting live using only an iPhone and 3G service
Within the next month, the BBC is set to roll out an iOS app that will allow field reporters to broadcast live from their iPhone using nothing but the 3G service to carry the data transmission, an article from Journalism.co.uk states.
The app will also allow BBC field reporters to file still photos, video and audio directly into the BBC content management system from any iPhone or iPad.
As Journalism.co.uk points out, the ability to broadcast right from an iPhone would mean that reporters could no longer have to carry cumbersome satellite or codex equipment. Martin Turner, BBC's head of operations for newsgathering, told Journalism.co.uk,

Updates: Airport Utility, Microsoft Office for Mac 2011
Apple and Microsoft today issued updates for two long-standing products; in the case of Apple, it has updated Airport Utility for Mac and Windows to version 5.5.3 to fix a crashing issue. Microsoft has updated Office for Mac 2004, 2008 and 2011 to address security vulnerabilities as well as bug fixes and enhancements to the suites.

iOS 5 Twitter assets hint 2048x1536 iPad still on the way
New art assets found inside iOS 5 have revived hopes that Apple was making a 2048x1536 iPad display. Much like the iBooks discovery in January, backgrounds and other parts of the Twitter framework are at the extra-large resolution. The TechUnwrapped source hadn't found it anywhere else in the OS so far, though, suggesting that Apple wasn't ready to commit to releasing a sharper tablet in the near future.

iPad rigged up with 3D screen in Taiwan
Display Taiwan 2011 is going on in Taiwan this week, and at a booth for a company called CPT, there's a device on display that looks very much like an iPad (though with the actual Apple logos and identifying information covered up) that's been Frankenstein-ed together with what appears to be a 3D display. You can see the device in the video below thanks to YouTubers minipcpro.
They call this an iPad 3 prototype, but I don't think it's that -- my guess is that this Taiwanese company just either opened up an actual iPad, or came across some iPad parts, and inserted their own display in the device. It's more a proof of concept than anything else. All you see running is that

Pandora Media offering IPO tomorrow
Music service Pandora is set to introduce its stock to the public tomorrow, becoming one more in a series of social networking and online service companies going with an IPO. Pandora isn't specifically an iOS company, of course, given that its music service runs both through browsers and on a number of platforms.
But the company's iOS app has helped its profile. It's consistently stayed one of the top free apps on the App Store. The company's offering 14.7 million shares initially.

Brando's iPad 2 telescope is perfect for watching the next Apple keynote
If you're like us, you've spent entirely too much time wondering how the movie Rear Window might have played out differently, had someone just handed Jimmy Stewart's character an iPad to play with. With the introduction of the Super Gear Telescope, it seems that the plot would've been mostly the same, just as soon as he finished beating Angry Birds. The Brando add-on brings 6x zoom to the iPad 2 and generally looks far less awkward than its iPhone predecessor. All in all, $26 seems like a small price to pay to see what the neighbors are looking at on their own iPads.
