Apple purchases Intrinsity, just 498 more ARM licensees to go
With P.A. Semi under its belt, and now "people familiar with the deal" reporting to The New York Times that a purchase of Intrinsity is a go, Apple's march to ARM preeminence is becoming much more clear. Apple hat für die Musikverwaltung iTunes eine kleine Aktualisierung auf Version 9.1.1 veröffentlicht. Eye-Fi announces Apple-exclusive Geo X2
Filed under: HardwareOn Tuesday, Eye-Fi announced a new Apple-exclusive product as well as expansion of its hotspot service plan.
Their new device, the Eye-Fi Geo X2, will only be sold at Apple Stores starting in May. It brings faster uploads of photos and video (via a new 802.11n transmitter) directly to iPhoto and MobileMe (Picasa, Facebook, and 20+ others). Its capacity is 4GB.
One cool new feature is what they're calling Endless Memory, which allows users to have Eye-Fi automatically make space available on the card after photos and videos have been safely uploaded. Neat! It also does automatic geotagging so your shots will show up in iPhoto's "Places" feature with no problem.

Vor wenigen Minuten stellte Apple ein Update für sein Multimedia-Programm iTunes bereit. Die neue Version 9.1.1 behebt diverse kleinere und größere Fehler. So gibt Apple an Stabilitätsprobleme mit VoiceOver, Verwendungsschwierigkeiten VoiceOver und den Genius Musikmixen, Konvertierungsprobleme von Titeln nach 128 KBit/s AAC bei der Synchronisation zu beheben. Außerdem werden allgemeine Verbesserungen der Stabilität und Leistung als Updategrund geliefert. Software Update alert: iTunes 9.1.1 released

Good news, everyone!
iTunes 9.1.1 just poked its head up in Software Update and said "download me."
According to the update notes, iTunes 9.1.1 provides a number of important bug fixes, including:
o. Addressing several stability issues with VoiceOver;
o. Addressing a usability issue with VoiceOver and Genius Mixes;
o. Addressing issues with converting songs to 128 kbps AAC while syncing; and
o. Addressing other issues that improve stability and performance. (Probably the biggest and most important reason for the update, in our humble opinion.)

Sammelklage wegen iPhone-Flüssigkeitssensoren
In den USA wurde Sammelklage gegen Apple eingereicht. Der Grund: Das iPhone meldet angeblich ohne Grund das Eindringen von Flüssigkeiten. Damit erlischt automatisch der Garantieanspruch. Initiiert hat die Klage eine wütende US iPhone-Besitzerin.

Google's Andy Rubin talks Android and Apple, promises Flash support in Froyo
Gather 'round, Android fans, because Google's Android boss Andy Rubin has done a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times, and we're guessing you're going to want to hear what he has to say. The biggest news to come out of it is word that Android 2.2, a.k.a. Froyo, will come complete with full support for Flash, which is far and away the most official confirmation we've had to date, and slightly contradicts earlier talk that Flash support wouldn't necessarily be built into the OS. A hands-on look at iStat Menus 3

During the summer of 2008, I was using my MacBook Air outside on a very hot (102°F in the shade) day when I noticed that the laptop seemed to have slowed down to the point that it was almost unusable. Fortunately, I had installed iSlayer's iStat, and I was able to tell at a glance that one of the cores of the Core 2 Duo processor had shut down.
Sure enough, a quick look around the Web pointed out that other MacBook Air owners were running into similar problems in "warm" conditions. Cooling off the MBA resolved the issue (and made me a lot cooler, too!), and I've never had the problem since. That one occurrence taught me the value of a tool like iStat, so the application has been on my Macs ever since.

We love Windows 7 Media Center, but at the end of the day we'd never give one to our mom and expect it to just work the way an embedded DVR like a TiVo or a Moxi would. Allerta's inPulse watch for BlackBerry spied at WES, turns on this time
You might recall that we got a quick look at the inPulse back at CES, but it didn't turn on back then, so we were excited to see the Allerta dudes back in action here at WES this week with a more functional prototype. This time, we were able to see the Bluetooth-connected watch flash its AMOLED display and it was plenty readable in harsh meeting room lighting; outdoor readability is another matter altogether, but we won't be able to answer that until we've got a review unit secured. What we saw was just a demo unit without a functional connection to a phone, but it was pre-loaded with enough content so that we got the basic idea of how it's going to work.

TomTom rolls out Urban Rider motorcycle GPS
We didn't get a glimpse of this one when we checked out TomTom's new Go Live 1000 navigation unit earlier today, but the company has also just introduced a new GPS device for motorcycle enthusiasts: the Urban Rider. This one sticks fairly close to the company's previous RIDER units, but apparently simplifies even further with a revised interface designed to allow easier operation with gloved hands -- yeah, you can bet this screen is resistive. Geely IG is covered in solar cells, two years away from marketability
Chinese carmaker Geely is no stranger to building derivative designs, and its latest PHEV effort takes so much inspiration from Volkswagen's Beetle that even the press release begins with a metaphor about caterpillars flourishing into butterflies. Hey, hey, look at this! A short, sweet Palm Pre Plus ad that shows off the phone's innovative UI, its ability to multitask, and its 3D gaming -- you know, all the great stuff it can do. E-Plus meldet trotz Kundenzuwachs Umsatzrückgang
E-Plus ist nach eigenen Angaben "relativ gut ins Jahr 2010 gestartet". Allerdings musste der Düsseldorfer Provider im ersten Quartal trotz Kundenzuwachs einen Umsatzrückgang gegenüber dem Vorjahr von 0,8 Prozent auf 768 Millionen Euro hinnehmen. Die Einnahmen aus Mobilfunkdienstleistungen schrumpften um 0,7 Prozent auf 729 Millionen Euro.

AMD stellt Sechskern-Prozessoren mit 2,8 und 3,2 GHz vor
Mit der Modellreihe Phenom II X6 stellt AMD seine ersten Sechskern-Prozessoren für Desktop-Systeme vor. Der unter dem Codenamen Thuban entwickelte Chip umfasst 904 Millionen Transistoren, die mit der von AMD verwendeten Herstellungstechnik 45-Nanometer-SOI eine Chipfläche von 346 mm2 belegen. Für das Modell 1090T mit 3,2 GHz verlangt der Intel-Konkurrent nur 299 Euro. Der Phenom II X6 1055T mit 2,8 GHz ist 100 Euro günstiger. Die empfohlenen Verkaufspreise werden von einigen Online-Händlern geringfügig unterboten.

OLPC Designer kreiert Brillen für mexikanische Schulkinder
Yves Béhar kennen die meisten als den Designer des OLPC (One Laptop per child). Viele unkten damals über die Aktion, aber mittlerweile sind 1 Millionen jener 100$-Laptops im Umlauf, um Kindern aus armen Regionen Zugang zu modernen Medien zu ermöglichen. Nun hat Béhar sein Talent aufgebracht, um Brillen für Kinder zu produzieren. Mit der mexikanischen Brillenfirma Augen sollen von nun an 400.000 Brillen pro Jahr gefertigt werden, die mexikanischen Schulkindern zugänglich gemacht werden sollen. 70 Prozent der dortigen Schulkinder sollen aufgrund von Sehschwächen nicht mal die Tafel lesen können. McAfee patches customers' hearts with subscription extension, reimbursement for PC repairs
McAfee's little issue with a security update that sent Windows XP computers far and wide to a screeching halt was fairly unprecedented as far as anti-virus software goes, and it looks like the company is now taking some considerable steps to make up for the mess it created. Not only is it handing out a free two-year subscription extension to all current customers, but it will soon be starting a program to reimburse "reasonable expenses" that customers have incurred in repairing their PCs. Complete details on that program aren't available just yet, but it will apparently be starting "within a few days," and will involve submitting a reimbursement request to McAfee. ARM meldet Rekord bei Umsatz und Gewinn
Unbeeindruckt von den Gerüchten, wonach Apple an der Übernahme des Unternehmens interessiert sei, stellte der britische Chip-Entwickler ARM ein Rekordergebnis für das erste Quartal 2010 vor. A really good netvertible -- that's all we want. No, not just a netbook with a touchscreen, but a device with a combination of solid ergonomics and performance in clamshell mode that can swivel into a really responsive tablet. RIM shows off BlackBerry 6 on video
While RIM's WES 2010 keynote is still ongoing, the company's YouTube channel has kindly released the first teaser video for the incoming BlackBerry 6 operating system. There's a lot of movement on screen -- so much, in fact, that it's almost like RIM really doesn't want you to see the OS at all. We did notice a Cover Flow-aping music organizer and a plenty of touch-oriented UI elements, though you'll naturally be able to utilize the new interface on more conventional, touch-less devices as well. EU investiert 225 Millionen Euro in Kommunikationssatelliten
Die Europäische Union (EU) beteiligt sich finanziell an einem Satellitenprogramm, das mit modernster Technik die schnelle Übertragung von Mobilfunkdaten und Telefonaten in Europa, dem Mittleren Osten und in Afrika verbessern soll. Die Europäische Investitionsbank (EIB), die Bank der EU, und die Europäische Kommission (EC) haben angekündigt, dass sie dafür 225 Millionen Euro als Kredit bereitstellen werden.

Erster Eindruck zum iPad Keyboard Dock
Auch wenn sich nun neben Bluetooth- auch USB-Tastaturen dank Camera Connection Kit an das iPad anschließen lassen, dürfte dem einen oder anderen iPad-Besitzer doch eher das iPad Keyboard Dock durch seine platzsparende Konstruktion zusagen. Macworld UK hat nun Fotos und einen kurzen Bericht zum iPad Keyboard Dock veröffentlicht. Zunächst fällt auf, dass das iPad-Dock mit fast 600 Gramm deutlich schwerer als eine herkömmliche Tastatur ist.

Meizu, die chinesische Firma mit unserem Lieblings-iPhone-RipOff, hat ein neues Smartphone angekündigt und auch wenn die Faktenlage dünn ist, klingt es vielversprechend, beziehungsweise sieht es vielversprechend aus: Das Meizu M9 soll nämlich unter Android laufen, drei Tastatursurrogate mitbringen und wenn es nach den jetzt veröffentlichten Renderings geht, wird das Smartphone auch ziemlich chic. Wenn es denn mal kommt und dann durch Android auch noch aus China heraus. Meizu ist nämlich leider auch für ewiges Rumtrödeln und Aufschieben bekannt.

It was a gruesome and sad story. After Bill Jordan picked up an iPad for a friend from the Cherry Creek Shopping Center Apple Store in Colorado, he was assaulted by two men who stole the iPad -- and in the process damaged his pinky finger so badly that part of it had to be removed.

TomTom Go Live 1000 given a first test drive
We've just returned from a ride with the TomTom Go Live 1000. In general, the device met our relatively high expectations set by a purported flagship navigator from the likes of TomTom. Unfortunately, the prototype unit guiding our vehicle was limited to a scripted demonstration on pre-selected routes. And when we did veer off course thanks to an unhelpful, but rather posh, voice guiding us to turn left a bit early, it took about 8 seconds for the ARM 11 device to reroute -- not bad but not exactly the 0 seconds we were promised during the pitch. Again, we were told that this was the result of using a prototype device though it must be a near production-ready model given the summer launch timeframe. Tipp: iPhone 3GS für einen Euro in der Verlängerung auch bei kleinen Tarifen
Die Telekom scheint sich intern sehr sicher, dass das kommende iPhone sehr beliebt sein wird. Denn in der Redaktion traf nun ein, was eigentlich erst im Juli der Fall sein dürfte: Wir bekamen ein iPhone 3GS mit 16 Gigabyte Speicher für einen Euro, obwohl für den Tarif "Complete 120 Friends" sowohl für die Verlängerung als auch für den Neuabschluss eine Gebühr von 89 Euro fällig gewesen wäre. Wie? Es reicht mit einem verlängerbaren Tarif bei der Kundenhotline (2202) anzurufen und freundlich um jenen Rabatt zu bitten, vielleicht noch mit dem Hinweis das man das neue iPhone ja schon kenne und es nicht so schön wie das eigentlich jetzt schon "alte" 3GS findet.

Opera 10.52 für den Mac erschienen
Nach einiger Verzögerung hat Opera nun seinen gleichnamigen Web-Browser in Version 10.52 für den Mac veröffentlicht. Damit wurde der Entwicklungsabstand zur Windows Version, die bereits seit März verfügbar war, wieder geschlossen. Apples iPad-Dock-VGA-Adapter ist teuer und weitgehend nutzlos

Apple hat ja eine lange und stolze Tradition in Sachen Zubehörabzocke, aber der iPad-Dock-VGA-Adapter scheint dann noch einmal einen traurigen Höhepunkt zu markieren: Die simple Stecker-Kabel-Stecker-Kombi kostet 29 Dollar und spiegelt theoretisch den Inhalt des Tablet-Displays auf einen größeren Bildschirm. Praktisch aber eher nicht. Bei Videos mit DRM (zum Beispiel aus dem iTunes-Store) oder den Apple-eigenen Anwendungen Pages und Keynote weigert sich das Teil schlicht seinen Job zu machen. Panic Software hat heute eine komplett neue Version seines Datentransfer-Klassikers Transmit vorgestellt. Das Programm unterstützt neben FTP, WebDAV und Apple iDisk auch Amazon S3. Mit über 45 neuen Features und Verbesserungen soll es jetzt bis zu 25 Mal schneller arbeiten. Auch die zuletzt etwas angestaubt wirkende Benutzeroberfläche wurde grundlegend saniert und wirkt nun deutlich frischer. The Emotive EPOC "mind-control" headset may not be quite as advanced as some of the brain-reading devices unavailable to the general public, but it looks like it's at least accurate enough for some basic tasks -- like controlling a WowWee Rovio robot via Skype. In dem entsprechenden Blog-Eintrag kündigt der Betreiber allerdings an, dass diese “bald” erscheine.

iPhone HD Prototyp: Polizei führt Hausdurchsuchung durch !
Wie jetzt bekannt wurde, hat am vergangenen Freitag eine Computer-Spezialeinheit der kalifornischen Polizei sich Zugang zum Haus von Gizmodo-Redakteur Jason Chen verschafft. Dieser war zu diesem Zeitpunkt selber nicht zu Hause und die Haustür wurde gewaltsam geöffnet. Im Zuge dieser polizeilichen Untersuchung wurden vier Computer sowie zwei Server beschlagnahmt.

FiOS adds Youtube and internet radio for all HD customers
Verizon FiOS likes to try and set itself apart from the competition and the latest in the list is the addition of Youtube and internet radio support to its Media Manager software. If you already have a FiOS DVR and Media Manager installed on your PC, all you have to do is hit the update button -- Mac fans are once again left on the outside looking in on this one. The good news for non-DVR users is that Media Manager, and its video and pictures sharing features, is now available to all FiOS customers. While these features are certainly appreciated, we're not exactly sure why Media Manager is required to stream internet content. AMD vervollständigt 8er-Chipsatz-Serie
Im Bereich der Chipsätze war es lange Zeit ruhig um AMD, die 7er-Chipsatz-Serie wurde bereits im November 2007 vorgestellt. Misconduct accusations stall iPhone prototype investigation

PowerVR maker lands alliance with MIPS
Imagination Technologies and MIPS today agreed to an alliance that would see the two promote each other's chips. While the two won't explicitly cooperate on projects, they will encourage partners that decide to use both Imagination's PowerVR graphics and a MIPS processor in the same device. The ability to run Android, Flash and other relatively demanding tasks requires it, MIPS' marketing VP Art Swift said.

AMD signaled a new direction for its workstation-class cards today by unveiling the ATI FirePro 2460 Multi-View. Das die Prototypen-Berichterstattung der Kollegen von Gizmodo ein rechtliches Nachspiel haben würde, schien bereits kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des Scoops relativ sicher. Report: Core i7 MacBook Pros running hot
Filed under: Macbook ProTests performed by PC Authority found a Core i7 MacBook Pro to be running very hot, climbing to over 100 degrees Celsius.
The magazine had a Core i7-620M based 17" MacBook Pro on their hands for testing. While putting it through their benchmark suite, they noticed that it scored lower in Photoshop tasks then expected. Suspicious that heat might be affecting their results, they propped the machine on its side and repeated the test. Performance improved.

NVIDIA to unify desktop, notebook driver development
NVIDIA is developing a new approach to its video drivers that would keep desktop and notebook graphics on an equal footing. Called Verde, the set would ensure that any new features or performance gains apply to all hardware.
