Google Reader Play makes RSS iPad-friendly
Google late Wednesday rolled out an alternate take on Google Reader that superficially makes things simpler but is also ideally suited to tablets. Google Reader Play switches from Reader's usual plain list view to a large-buttoned media browser based on user's "recommended items" feed. The new web app shows any photos or YouTube videos in a large, central area and lets users favorite or share the content they prefer; recommendations also come from fellow users.

Citrix Receiver runs virtualized Windows apps, desktops
Citrix has launched Receiver for Mac, allowing Mac users to access Windows software, documents and desktops in a mixed-OS environment. Apps are opened as if they were local to a user's Mac. Apple aims at patenting 'enhanced' broadcasts
Apple has been exploring the concept of inserting personalized content into media streams, a newly-published patent application reveals. Titled Radio With Personal DJ, the claim notes that it should be possible to add personalized or otherwise customized content to streams intended for media players, here meaning mostly computers and iPods. The content could be injected into the middle of a stream, or in random or regular intervals between media.

Novothink ships solar-powered iPhone, iPod touch cases
Novothink today put out its promised Solar Surge case for the iPhone and iPod touch. The design acts like a battery sled for Apple's devices and, as its name suggests, is one of the few such cases that can power itself. While slow to charge, a two-hour exposure to daylight can give an iPhone 3G or 3GS enough extra power for 30 more minutes of calls and considerably longer for music.

AT&T's field trial of 100-gigabit Ethernet a success
Wireless and cable provider AT&T earlier this week announced it has completed successful field trials of its 100-gigabit backbone network technology. The provider used the new Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System for its tests along with matching modules on the client side and artificial traffic generators to simulate conditions. The test was performed over a 560-mile stretch between Louisiana and Florida with optical fiber providing the backbone.

We'd already gotten word of HP's new $40 million "Let's Do Amazing" ad campaign earlier today, but the company has just now rolled out its first series of ads to give us some indication of how all that money is being spent. Six-core Intel Core i7 tested: fast for creative tasks
New tests of Intel's just-launched Core i7-980X is potentially much faster than existing chips but also faces noticeable limits. The first mainstream six-core processor is fastest in creative tasks such as 3D modeling, Photoshop filters and video encoding, many of which are aware of multithreaded code and can use six cores. The performance gap over a quad-core i7 at the same 3.33GHz speed is usually at least 20 percent higher and as much as 70 percent higher.

MacBook Pros may be joining Mac Pros in getting updates in the next few days
We're hearing that MacBook Pros are ready to be unveiled as early as tomorrow but could be pushed back to Tuesday. Our tipster seems to think that the MacBook Pros will be released alongside the Mac Pros in the coming days.
The MacBook Pro will be released on the same day as Mac Pro. We are scheduled for a Friday morning release but with the amount of updates may be pushed to Tuesday. ipad is number 1 and everything else is as time permits. Look for i5 in base macbook pro with i7 in higher end 15 and 17 inch.

JooJoo hits the FCC, reveals NVIDIA Ion, 3G card
Well well. Dolby extending Axon 3D chat to consoles, Mac
At the Game Developer's Conference, Dolby said it will make its Axon 3D voice chat technology available for gamers on the PS3, Xbox 360 and Mac platforms. FTC may oppose Google's AdMob buyout
The Federal Trade Commission has signaled that it may at least temporarily block Google's buyout of AdMob, a set of leaks from within the process hinted late Thursday. As part of its investigation, the FTC is reportedly asking "at least two" companies to sign statements that would likely argue that the mobile ad deal abuses Google's web dominance. Such testimonies are usually gathered when FTC agents believe the Commission will block or change a deal, WSU professor Stephen Calkins told Bloomberg.

Apple is making a variety of "last-minute" changes to categories at the iBookstore, as well as its process for certifying iPhone apps to run on the iPad, according to Forbes. A San Francisco company, Busted Loop, is said to have learned about the iBookstore categories while working on a project designed to make it easier for the public to find apps. Sony EVIL camera to use touchscreen
Screen captures of Sony's EVIL (electronic viewfinder, interchangeable lens) digital camera concept shown off at the PMA show last month reveal some more functionalities of the device. Novothink rolls out Solar Surge iPhone / iPod touch charging case
It's not November '09 as originally promised, but Novothink has now announced that its Solar Surge charging cases for the iPhone and iPod touch are finally available. Those will run $79.95 for the iPhone 3G/3GS version and $69.95 for the iPod touch version (second gen only, it seems), which are each available only in black or white at the moment (additional colors are "coming soon), and should add between four and eight hours of talk time, or up to 20 hours of additional audio playback. iPhone 3.2 SDK mentions multitasking, removes video calls
Several more differences have been spotted in beta 4 of the iPhone 3.2 SDK, currently available only to developers. Significant may be multiple references to multitasking, such as a code comment discussing a "multitasking dialog box." Und nicht nur Nicholas Negroponte findet diese Idee ganz entzückend, nein auch der Preisträger von 2003, Shirin Ebadi, steht hinter der Idee. Dolby issues Axon SDK to bring surround sound to online console / Mac gamers
Dolby's Axon surround sound technology isn't exactly new (it's already used on a number of PC titles), but to date, it has yet to make a stand in the online console and Mac gaming sectors. All that changes today at GDC, with the aural company introducing an Axon software development kit that will make it possible for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and OS X titles to integrate the technology. According to the company, this here solution provides improved audio chain processing (noise suppression and echo suppression), surround sound voice chat over stereo headsets, 5.1 playback and support for any stereo headset. We're told that the ports should be available for devs starting in April, though only time will tell how long it takes for your Xbox Live experience to go from haunting to all-encompassing.

OpenGL 4.0 vorgestellt
Die Khronos Group hat auf der Game Developers Conference in San Francisco OpenGL 4.0 vorgestellt. Der Standard soll die Programmierung komplexer Grafikeffekte erleichtern, aber auch die Nutzung der GPU für andere Aufgaben. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt der Version 4.0 ist Tesselation (auf Deutsch auch "Parkettierung" genannt), die Aufteilung eines Grafikobjekts in mehrere kleine, um ein detailreicheres Bild zu erzeugen. Tesselation wurde ursprünglich von Silicon Graphics entwickelt, ist aber mittlerweile ein Standard unter Aufsicht der Khronos Group.

Sony's ultra-compact concept camera gets slightly less mysterious
We didn't exactly get the best look at Sony's new ultra-compact concept camera at PMA last month, but the company is now thankfully starting to reveal a few more details about the "DSLR quality" camera. Still nothing in the way of specs or an actual working camera, of course, but Sony has provided a few screenshots of the camera's menu system that at least provide a few tidbits of information. OpenGL 4 specs bring OpenCL hooks, new effects
The Khronos Group today outlined the official feature set for OpenGL 4.0. The new graphics standard is the first major update since the launch of OpenCL and better exploits general computing features. It can draw the output of an OpenCL calculation without having to invoke the main processor and potentially frees up the processor even more when video or a similar task is already being offloaded to the graphics core.

Barnes & Noble prepping eReader for iPad
Barnes & Noble on Thursday said it was developing a version of its eReader app just for the iPad. Unlike the split approach to the regular iPhone feature, which breaks up the reader and storefront, the iPad version should provide both the store and the reader in the same software. Glaubt man einem Artikel bei , so könnte das kommende iPhone Betriebssystem durchaus dazu in der Lage sein, endlich mehrere Programme nebenher benutzbar zu machen. Pink Floyd wins ruling, bans single-song downloads
Pink Floyd in a UK court on Thursday won a key ruling in its case against EMI for allegedly breaking its contract terms. Virgin plans 50Mbps for rural areas over telegraph pole
Virgin Media today outlined plans to test one of the fastest rural Internet services available. The trial, in the UK village of Woolhampton, would use existing telegraph poles to link the area directly to Virgin's fiber optic network. Steve Jobs' employment is a bargain for Apple
The interesting thing about Steve Jobs' $5.5 Billion (making him the 136th richest person, up from 3.6Billion/172nd richest last year) in assets is that only around $1 billion of that is from Apple. His Pixar-sold-to-Disney shares are worth $4.2 billion, down from the original $7.2 billion at the time of the deal.
Jobs did completely cash out of Apple (at not a great time) after his first stint and used some of that money to buy and grow Pixar and start NeXT. But, Apple's market cap has gone from $4 billion in 1997 when he started to over $200 billion this week. &n

Karlsruher Forscher wollen Energieverbrauch des Internets reduzieren
Wissenschaftler des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT) haben für das von ihnen koordinierte Projekt SOFI (Silicon-Organic hybrid Fabrication platform for Integrated circuits) von der EU Fördergelder in Höhe von 2,5 Millionen Euro erhalten. Words what good are words when you're trying to describe the horrific visage of a growling, rugged, heavyweight camera coated in the frilly tutu of the color spectrum, magenta? We shan't try to describe the peculiar mix of revolt, disgust and subtle desire that this whole thing incites in us, and will just point you after the break for the video. Enttäuschte Hoffnung: Keine Kamera im iPad
Inzwischen sind die letzten Hoffnungen geschwunden: Die erste iPad-Version wird Anfang April in den USA und Ende April in Europa ohne iSight auf den Markt kommen, allen zeitweise aufgetauchten Hinweisen zum Trotz. Trojaner OSX.Loosemaque - Wer schießt, verliert.
Ein freiwilliger Trojaner wäre keine Meldung wert, aber ein derart Skurriler schon. Der OS X-Trojaner "OSX.Loosemaque" kann Dateien im Home-Verzeichnis löschen, wenn man ihn lässt. Das kleine Programm ist aufgebaut wie ein Ableger der Spielereihe "Space Invaders" und löscht bei jedem abgeschossenen "feindlichen" Raumschiff eine Datei. Freiwillig ist der Trojaner deshalb, weil Entwickler Zach Gage in seinem Programm explizit auf das mögliche Löschen hinweist und dies wie folgt begründet: Die vermeintlich gegnerischen Raumschiffe schießen kein einziges Mal. Warum nehmen wir automatisch an, wenn uns jemand eine Waffe in die Hand gibt und wir dafür belohnt werden, sie zu nutzen, dass diese Handlungsweise richtig ist? Razer gelobt bessere Mac-Unterstützung
Die Treiberunterstützung für Macs sieht bei den meisten Razer-Produkten bislang eher spärlich aus, lediglich die „Naga“ und die „DeathAdder“ genießen auf dem Mac bislang volle Unterstützung seitens Razer. Mit dem iPhone-Game "Polo Challenge" hatte Volkswagen schon Millionenerfolge feiern können. Später lernte u.a. der Scirrocco auf dem Kulthandy das Rennen. Zum 80. Genfer Automobil-Salon hatten die Wolfsburger gleich zwei kostenlose Apps im Gepäck: Eine Kombination aus LBS und Augmented Reality bietet die App Volkswagen Händlersuche. Neuer Mac Pro am Dienstag?
Bei Hardwaregerüchten, besonders was eine Veröffentlichung angeht, ist immer höchste Vorsicht geboten. Trotz der hohen Fehlquote traut sich ZDNet-Kolumnist Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, folgende für die kommende Woche abzugeben: Am nächsten Dienstag, den 16. März, soll ein neuer Mac Pro vorgestellt werden. Herzstück des neuen Rechners soll dann ein Intel Core-i7-980x-CPU mit sechs Prozessorkernen werden. Mit 3,33 GHz im Grundtakt und 3,6 GHz im Turbo-Boost verspräche das neue Flaggschiff einen ordentlichen Leistungszuwachs. Die Abgabe einer Vorhersage zu neuen MacBook Pros traut sich Kingsley-Hughes allerdings nicht zu, da bei dieser Produktsparte momentan zu viele Gerüchte daneben liegen.

iSuppli: Acer nimmt Dell 2009 weitere Marktanteile ab
Acer hat 2009 fast so viele Computer verkauft wie Dell. Das taiwanische Unternehmen erreichte einer Studie von iSuppli zufolge im vergangenen Jahr einen Marktanteil von 12,7 Prozent, 0,2 Punkte weniger als Dell. Während Acers Verkaufszahlen um 21 Prozent auf 38,5 Millionen Stück kletterten, setzte Dell 9,9 Prozent weniger PCs ab.

In den vorherigen Version waren Hinweise auf Videotelefonie zu finden, so gab es im TelephonyUI.framework Bilder mit den Bezeichnungen "Declineorendvideo.png" oder "AcceptVideo.png". Exploit für neue Internet-Explorer-Lücke veröffentlicht
Ein israelischer Hacker hat einen Exploit für die Anfang der Woche bekannt gewordene Zero-Day-Lücke im Internet Explorer 6 und 7 entwickelt. Moshe Ben Abu hat dafür Informationen analysiert, die McAfee in einem Blogeintrag über die Schwachstelle veröffentlicht hat. Der Schadcode ist über die Penetrationstest-Suite Metasploit frei im Internet verfügbar. Er ermöglicht Drive-by-Downlaod-Angriffe auf IE6- und IE7-Nutzer.

Heimkinosysteme mit drahtlosem Dock
Samsung hat zwei neue 2.1-Heimkinosysteme aus der Sound Bar-Serie vorgestellt, die sich optional mit einem drahtlosen iPod/iPhone-Dock erweitern lassen. Die Modelle HW-C450 (schwarz) und HW-C451 (silber) bringen es auf jeweils 280 Watt Gesamtleistung und sollen für 349 Euro in den Handel kommen. Sony stellt Bewegungs-Controller PlayStation Move vor

Auf der Game Developers Conference in San Francisco hat Sony wie erwartet einen Controller präsentiert, der ähnlich dem Wii-Prinzip die Spielesteuerung durch Bewegungen erlaubt. Allerdings nur Wii-ähnlich, denn Sony setzt auf ein optisches System, das auf der PS Eye basiert. PlayStation Move, wie der neue Controller heißt, soll zusammen mit der PS Eye "unter 100 Dollar" angeboten werden, natürlich in der Vorweihnachtszeit. HTML5 vs. Flash comparison finds a few surprises, settles few debates
Think we'd all be better off if HTML5 could somehow instantly replace Flash overnight? Not necessarily, according to a set of comparisons from Jan Ozer of the Streaming Learning Center website, which found that while HTML5 did come out ahead in many respects, it wasn't exactly a clear winner. The tests weren't completely scientific, but they did find that HTML5 clearly performed better than Flash 10 or 10.1 in Safari on a Mac, although the differences were less clear cut in Google Chrome or Firefox. On the other hand, Flash more than held its own on Windows, and Flash Player 10.1 was actually 58% more efficient than HTML5 in Google Chrome on the Windows system tested. Verizon expects first 4G phones mid-2011
Verizon CTO Anthony Melone in a talk [sub. required] today asserted that the carrier's first 4G phones should arrive in the middle of 2011. The unnamed handsets would come roughly a year after the Long Term Evolution-based network goes live for pure data but would be about six months ahead of the originally predicted timeframe. Any early phone is likely to have separate CDMA and LTE chipsets as coverage will still be small enough that subscribers will need legacy phone support to get service outside of 4G areas.

Epson announces two new inkjet printers for businesses
Epson has announced two color inkjet printers geared for small businesses, the B-310N and B-510DN. Both printers feature high-capacity front paper cassettes capable of holding up to 500 sheets, along with network support for remote control. The B-310N offers four ink cartridges capable of printing an average of 3,000 black pages and 3,500 color pages before requiring replacement. Additionally, the printer provides a rear feeder that can handle envelopes and sheet labels.

Publisher pushes back over arbitrary censorship on App Store
Criticism surrounding Apple's recent anti-smut campaign has continued to build, as the German publishing giant Axel Springer views the censorship as going too far, according to a Spiegel report. New Flip cams to launch in early April?
The details are slim to none on this one, but we're all about a good pocket cam rumor. According to the usually-reliable Business Insider Cisco will launch a new set of Flip camcorders around the NAB show which runs from April 12-15, but we don't have any specs yet. Come on Cisco, now you've got us guessing not only about the future of the Internet, but also if your newest Flip will support 1080p. We've been slipped some additional information on Motorola's imminent Android-powered i1 for iDEN networks today -- actually, one correction and one interesting note. PowerVR maker sees PS3 graphics on phones in 3 years
Smartphones will have graphics on par with a PlayStation 3 in three years, Imagination Technologies said in an interview on Wednesday. The company estimates for Gizmodo that long-term future mobile PowerVR graphics cores in development today and will not only produce much more 3D detail but will do so at 720p, whether through an HDMI output or on similar-resolution displays that should be readily available at the same time. JooJoo revamps interface ahead of launch, adds local video playback -- and changes color
The JooJoo tablet's launch date might have been pushed back a month while Fusion Garage sorts out issues with the capacitive touchscreen, but it looks like the extra time has given the company a chance to tweak the interface and add in some features.
