Apple releases minor updates for QuickTime, iPhoto
Apple on Tuesday released maintenance updates for QuickTime and iPhoto. QuickTime 7.6.6 focuses on increased reliability, expanded compatibility, and improved security. Specific details are vague, although the download is said to address H.264 playback issues on certain Windows systems with multi-core configurations.

Chrome OS to carry built-in Flash too
Google as a side note to news of built-in Flash for Chrome has confirmed that its upcoming Chrome OS will get similar treatment. A representative said the Flash move was part of a wider strategy and would apply to the web-centric platform as well as Linux and Mac versions of the browser. Whether this would arrive with the first Chrome OS devices, due in the second half of the year, wasn't mentioned to TechCrunch in the response.

iTunes 9.1 brings iPad sync, Genius Mix changes
As expected, Apple has posted iTunes 9.1, a key update for the company's jukebox software. The release is essential for future iPad owners, as it will be required to sync any media with a Mac or Windows PC. Apple has moreover implemented iTunes' first support for e-books, including organization, sync and import. The format shares an umbrella with audiobooks under a new, general "Books" tab.

Apple exploiting US Customs to hold iPads back?
Apple may be exploiting a loophole in US Customs to prevent online iPad orders from arriving ahead of the official schedule, information suggests. The company has so far maintained that the product will only launch on April 3rd, even though shipments having been going out since Monday. Most iPads would arrive early under normal circumstances, deflating some of Apple's PR campaign, while also giving some people an opportunity to resell the device at a high markup.

TomTom rolls out Start 2, XL IQ Routes edition 2 nav units for the UK
TomTom's already announced some new lifetime map and traffic options for its navigation units in the US today, and it's now followed that up with a pair of new nav units in the UK. Intel intros eight-core Xeon 7500 for servers
Intel this afternoon sought to cement its grip on the very high end of computers with its first eight-core processor, the Xeon 7500. The two extra cores give it even more performance in highly parallel situations -- up to 16 program threads at once with Hyperthreading -- and the design itself is unique at Intel in the sheer amount of scaling compared to the outgoing 7400. A four-processor server can handle as much as 1TB of memory, and a single computer can include as many as 256 discrete processors.

Four Letter Words robot plays word association, swears quite a bit (video)
If you know us, you know how much we love our swear words -- the basis of which, of course, is the old fashioned "four letter word." Artist Rob Seward must feel the same way -- he's actually gone so far as to build a robot that can assemble letters out of fluorescent lights, displaying English language words up to four digits long. Drawing on a word association database developed at the University of South Florida, an algorithm is used to display a never-ending series of words for bemused viewers. Ever since we first met Lenovo's ThinkPad X100e at CES we've had it on a virtual pedestal as the perfect solution between a netbook and a larger 13- or 14-inch ULV ultraportable. That's because in addition to carrying the renowned ThinkPad brand, its AMD Neo processor / ATI graphics combo promise more power than the typical Intel Atom N450-powered netbook, and with an 11.6-inch screen the chassis can accommodate a wider keyboard and touchpad. Google to integrate Flash into Chrome, quell Apple's gripes
Google today previewed its long-term plans for Chrome with a new developer build that integrates Flash. The new version automatically downloads the latest version of Flash at the same time as the browser and makes Flash updates a part of Chrome's own automatic update systems. Future development will also extend Chrome's signature sandboxing design to prevent malicious Flash code from touching other parts of the app or the OS.

Desk Phone Dock promises to bring some landline charm to the iPhone
There's not much more than renders and / or polished photos to see at the moment, but this so-called Desk Phone Dock is slated to make its debut at the China Sourcing Fair next month, and it shouldn't have much trouble turning some heads among all the usual iPhone accessories. Complete details (including pricing and availability) will apparently have to wait until then, but the dock does promise to charge and sync your iPhone while it's in place, and it will function as a speakerphone as well if you don't feel like using the handset -- or simply as speaker for your iPhone, for that matter (that's a volume knob / mute button on top). Unfortunately, we won't be at the fair to check it out first hand, but we'll certainly be keeping a close watch on this one.

Seton Hill University hands out iPads to students
If there's one thing that universities are good at, it's dreaming up trendy technology initiatives. Study: Kindle trumps iPad in recognition, but not interest
The Amazon Kindle is by far the most recognized e-book reader, but not the one most people are hoping to buy in the near future, a study from PriceGrabber suggests. The comparison shopping website notes that between February 8th and the 25th, it conducted an online survey with 1,631 respondents. Of these, 61 percent are said to have heard of the Kindle, whereas 55 percent had heard of the unreleased Apple iPad.

Estimate has 400,000 iPads selling on launch weekend
Apple might move as many as 400,000 iPads in just its opening weekend, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi said in a note on Tuesday. Without knowing exactly what content and third-party distribution will be available, the financial researcher claimed to be conservative and said that between 300,000 and 400,000 of the tablets are likely to ship. The total would include both pre-orders and retail sales and is based partly on assumptions regarding the original iPhone, which sold 270,000 units in two days at similar pricing and with a US-only release.

Taiwanese firm Elan Microelectronics has filed a patent infringement complaint against Apple with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Der MP3-Player-Boom ist dem gemeinsamen Hörerlebnis ja nicht gerade förderlich, weshalb auch der Markt für portable Lautsprecher prosperiert. Dabei stellt sich allerdings regelmäßig die Frage, woher die Energie für portable Lautsprecher kommen soll, ein Debakel mit dem sich schon Ghettoblaster-Poser herumschlagen mussten. Die Jungs von Qed-Design aus Aschaffenburg haben sich dazu einer altbewährten Lösung besonnen, den Schalltrichter. Das Qed-Horn heißt Hendekagram und ist fürs Einklinken von Ohrhörerstöpseln konzipiert, weshalb Hendekagram wohl auch im Zweierpack kommen wird. You probably don't have enough reminders that you're always a little behind, right? Well Chris and his wife Madeline decided to make one more for themselves: a t-shirt that lights up when you have new emails, and also tells you the number in your inbox. Using an Arduino Lilypad microcontroller, a few LEDs, conductive thread, and a Bluetooth dongle to communicate with an Android phone nearby (which has access to the inbox), Chris took a custom printed shirt and rigged up this badboy. It's actually pretty good looking as far as these things go, but we still don't know if we need this in our already alert-ridden lives. For a car that's been as eagerly anticipated and hyped as the Chevrolet Volt, seeing it in person is not exactly an awe-inspiring experience. In fact if you don't look twice it's very easy to mistake it for Chevy's Cruze, an eco-friendly (though decidedly traditionally powered) small car. Apple wins patent on steel iPhone bezel
Apple has won one of its USPTO patent claims for the iPhone, specifically covering the device's iconic steel bezel. While appearing superficial, Apple claims that the bezel is actually essential to impact resistance, and innovative in part because it merges utility with aesthetics. The part is flush with an iPhone's housing, inserted into a brace and held with a spring. It is also manufactured with cold worked steel, said to better accommodate design limits while reducing the need for machining.

Laut Toshiba ist es das "dünnste QWERTY-Slider Phone (66×123×12.9mm) und erscheint mit dem bereits leicht antiquierten Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Polizei sprengt Softwarefälscherring
Die Polizei hat laut einer Mitteilung von Microsoft in der vergangenen Woche vier Personen festgenommen, die im Verdacht stehen, jahrelang gefälschte Windows-XP-Kopien über das Internet verkauft zu haben. Unter Leitung der Staatsanwaltschaft Görlitz durchsuchte die Kriminalpolizeiinspektion Görlitz gemeinsam mit den Landeskriminalämtern Berlin, Sachsen und Brandenburg sowie mit der tschechischen Kriminalpolizei 14 Objekte im In- und Ausland und stellte dabei mehrere Tausend Kopien des Betriebssystems sowie weiteres Beweismaterial sicher.

Studie: 90 Prozent der Windows-Schwachstellen erfordern Administratorrechte
BeyondTrust kommt in einer Studie zu dem Ergebnis, dass die meisten Angriffe auf Windows-Systeme wirkungslos wären, wenn der Nutzer keine Administratorrechte besäße. Coby, eigentlich eher für Billig-Technik bekannt, hat einen MP3-Player entwickelt, dessen Design das Zeug zum Wow-Faktor hat. Wenn es sich nicht nur um ein schlau fotografiertes Durchschnittsteil handelt, denn außer dem obigen Bild weiß man wenig über den MP570: 2 GB Speicher, kein Kartenslot, fix einbauter Akku und gespielt werden nur MP3- und WMA-Dateien. Wie das Gerät aus anderen Perspektiven aussieht und was es kosten soll, steht dagegen noch in den Sternen.

Xing: Verlust trotz Umsatz- und Mitgliederwachstums
Xing hat seinen Umsatz im abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahr dank steigender Kundenzahlen gesteigert. Wie aus der heute veröffentlichten Bilanz (PDF) hervorgeht, legten die Einnahmen 2009 um 28 Prozent von 35,3 Millionen auf 45,1 Millionen Euro zu. Das Ergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) ging leicht von 12,2 Millionen auf 11,8 Millionen Euro zurück.

In tandem with the release of Mac OS X 10.6.3, Apple has also posted two smaller updates for other operating systems. Security Update 2010-002 is directed at Leopard users, and includes all of the same security fixes as the Snow Leopard update. Umfrage: iPad-Käufer sind gut verdienende Apple-Fans
51 Prozent der befragten 18- bis 34-jährigen Amerikaner würden lieber ein Netbook haben als ein iPad. WD intros standard-height 2.5-inch 750GB Scorpio Blue HDD
Western Digital already shipped the industry's first 2.5-inch 1TB hard drive last summer, but unfortunately for most, it couldn't be used as a drop-in solution for upgrading one's laptop drive. The reason? It relies on an unorthodox 12.5mm height form factor, while the vast majority of laptops only support 9.5mm height drives. Now, the outfit has pushed out a 750GB Scorpio Blue, a 2.5-incher that does indeed utilize the standard height form factor, and while this here unit includes Advanced Format and WhisperDrive, the 5,400RPM spindle speed is admittedly disappointing. News: Apple releases iPhone SDK 3.2 GM Seed for iPad
Apple has released its GM, or Gold Master, version of the iPhone SDK 3.2 for iPad. iPhone SDK 3.2 nun in finaler Version
Vergangene Nacht hat Apple das iPhone SDK 3.2 in der so genannten “Goldmaster-Variante” zum Download frei gegeben. Sollten keine gröberen Bugs mehr dazwischenkommen, so wird dies vermutlich die finale Version zum Entwickeln zukünftiger iPhone-, iPod- sowie iPad-Apps sein.

Xing verzeichnet 2009 Umsatzwachstum um 28 Prozent
Xing hat seinen Umsatz im abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahr dank steigender Kundenzahlen gesteigert. WD joins fray with thin 750GB notebook drive
Western Digital today joined the ranks of those making thin 750GB mobile drives with an upgrade to the Scorpio Blue. Like its Toshiba cousin, the 2.5-inch SATA II drive fits its 750GB into two platters and can fit into a typical 9.5mm (0.37in) height used by most notebooks, including thin-and-lights. Most slimmer notebook drives have stopped at 640GB.

Elan seeks ITC block on infringing Apple sales
Taiwan's Elan Microelectronics -- involved in a long-running lawsuit with Apple over multi-touch technology -- has asked the US International Trade Commission to block the import and sale of a variety of Apple products, says Bloomberg. Specifically Elan says it wants to halt products that infringe on its "352" patent, which describes a means of detecting the presence of two or more fingers. "Our goal is to protect our technology and to stop sales of those products in the US," says Elan spokesman Dennis Liu.

Die Idee, dieses Teil an Konsumenten loszuschlagen, ist jedenfalls mehr als verstrahlt, auch wenn die Fantasie für einen winzige Augenblick etwas bestechendes hat: Man könnte doch das Touch-Panel auf einen alten Monitor kleben, der dann ein prima Touchscreen wäre. SlingPlayer marketing manager Dave Eyler today confirmed that his company is working on a version of SlingPlayer for the iPad. Simyo verspricht zum iPad-Start SIM-Karten ohne Vetragsbindung

Die E-Plus-Tochter Simyo verspricht pünktlich zum heimischen Verkaufsstart des iPad, also Ende April, SIM-Karten ohne Vetragsbindung. Die SIM-Frage wird beim iPad dadurch kompliziert, dass Apple eine Micro-SIM-Karte vorsieht, die noch kleiner als die gängige Mini-SIM-Karte ist. Bei Simyo soll es eine limitierte Menge Micro-SIMs zum iPad-Start geben, die Karten kosten einmalig 14,90 Euro inklusive 3 Euro Startguthaben. Allerdings kann der Datenverkehr bei Simyo richtig teuer werden, im Standardtarif kostet nämlich ein MB satte 24 Cent. Sinnvoller ist demnach der Tarif "Daten-1GB", der 1 GB Transfer innerhalb von 30 Tagen für 9,90 Euro bietet. China blockiert einige von Googles mobilen Diensten
Google teilt auf seiner Informationsseite zu China mit, dass dort seit Sonntag einige seiner mobilen Angebote anders als an den Vortagen nicht mehr zugänglich sind. Es ist die erste Änderung in der Verfügbarkeit von Googles Diensten, seit das Unternehmen alle Aufrufe seiner chinesischen Suchmaschine Google.cn nach Hongkong umleitet. Laut einem Bericht des "Wall Street Journal" arbeitet Apple derzeit unter Hochdruck am nächsten großen iPhone-Update, das am 22. Juni vorgestellt werden soll. Das iPhone der vierten Generation würde damit pünktlich zum ersten Geburtstag des Modells 3G S kommen, es soll aber nicht "4G" heißen sondern "iPhone HD". Zur Kasse gebeten: iPhone OS 5.0 für iPad kostenpflichtig
Der Vorgänger noch nicht einmal Beta, da steht die Preispolitik für das übernächste Major-Update iPhone OS 5.0 schon fest: Wie auch alle iPod touch-Nutzer müssen iPad-Kunden erster Stunde ab OS 5.0 für die großen Updates einen kleinen Betrag von meist 3,99 Euro zahlen. Dies ging jüngst aus dem Lizenzvertrag des nächsten OS, beziehungsweise des ersten OS für das iPad hervor, dessen Lizenzvereinbarung bereits jetzt auf den Apple Servern liegt. Diese beschreibt kostenlose Updates bis Version 4.0 und deren Anhängsel, sprich 4.0.1, 4.0.3, usw. und danach eine Zahlungspflicht für alles Kommende.

Studie: Preise der begehrtesten Apps purzeln
Die Marktforscher und Mobile App Store-Spezialisten von Distimo stellen den aktuellen Report zu Apples App Store vor, der auf Zahlen vom Februar 2010 beruht. Hiernach liegt der Durchschnittspreis der meist nachgefragten Paid Apps in Europa mit umgerechnet 3,86 US-Dollar deutlich über dem Schnitt in den USA (2,43 Dollar) und Asien (2,69 Dollar). Weltweit ist der Durchschnittspreis bei den beliebtestens Apps seit Anfang Dezember 2009 bis Ende Februar um rund 15 Prozent gesunken.

We heard last summer that 2010 would be the year for US Airways to gain in-flight internet, and sure enough, America's worst legacy airline has made good on said promise. As of now, a grand total of five Airbus A321 planes are equipped with Gogo, and if you're lucky enough to end up on one, you'll get a single free session through June 1st provided that you're a first-time Gogo user. Us freeloaders still have a bit of a wait left, it seems, but paying members of Apple's iPhone Developer Program (which now services iPad devs, too) now have access to the Gold Master seed of the iPhone SDK for OS 3.2. This is a pretty big deal since it's the very first version of the operating system to support the iPad, of course -- and seeing how the first volley of iPads hits retail this weekend, it couldn't come at a better time.
