UK to expand 3G frequencies in August
UK telecommunications regulator Ofcom has proposed using 3G technologies at 2G frequencies in the UK, with an amended document that should be approved this August. In it, rules are updated to Ultra Wide Band usage, while 3G network technology will be deployed at the 900MHz and 1,800MHz bands which are currently restricted to the 2G GSM network.

Win XP needs some TLC to use next-gen hard drives
Solid state drives may be the fast-moving wave of the future in PC storage, but the technology for bigger and better magnetic media keeps on trucking. Boost Mobile offers prepaid SANYO Incognito
Boost Mobile has launched the QWERTY-based clamshell/flip hybrid phone from SANYO on its prepaid network: the Incognito. Introduced last fall and first available at Best Buy in late January, Boost Mobile expects to expand the distribution of Kyocera's low-cost phone to RadioShack as well as Target and Walmart soon. The handset, which utilizes Boost's outsourced 3G/EVDO network (by Sprint), has a glowing touch-sensitive keypad and OLED display along with flip-open QWERTY keyboard and a larger 2.6-inch, 320x240 screen along with a 2MP camera with VGA camcorder.

News: FCC filings show iPad Wi-Fi + 3G is larger
In addition to the disclosure in Apple’s just-published FCC filings for the iPad that there are two Wi-Fi antennas per model, a separate Apple document has disclosed a previously unknown difference in the dimensions of the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models. iPad sales through the roof? Shortages ahead?
A number of reports are coming in today with extremely high iPad sales numbers and potential shortages.

Verizon's Nexus One to be sold only through Google, have Sense UI (or not)
This doesn't come as much of a surprise, but Android Central seems to have obtained a screen shot from a deep, dark, top-secret Verizon system that indicated that the upcoming CDMA version of the Nexus One will be "available only through www.Google.com/Phones." That, of course, matches T-Mobile's strategy of quietly letting Google do its thing -- and Verizon's strategy of keeping its network "open" -- so you'll just have to remember to not line up at your local store at 8PM the night before the launch, otherwise you're going to come away very, very disappointed. iPad crunch may see long waits, limited business use
It may soon be difficult or impossible to get an iPad without having pre-ordered, information from retail sources indicates. Apple itself has confirmed that all shoppers are currently being limited to two iPads, even if they represent a business client. The restriction on businesses could imply that quantities are limited enough that Apple is reserving as much as it can for the general public.

Korea may block Android Market due to game laws
South Korea is considering banning access to the Android Marketplace to its residents if Google continues to offer game apps that are not approved by the country's regulator. According to a Thursday report, South Korea's Games Ratings Board officially requested that Google Korea abides by the law, requiring all video games to be rated by the governing body. Google is reviewing the South Korean government's request but has not yet made any decisions public.

Apple iPad -- model A1337 -- phreaks the FCC
A pair of iPads was just revealed in the FCC's system in perfect synchrony with that little pre-order sitch with which you may or may not already be familiar. Apple, of course, has a track record of timing its FCC filings perfectly so that virtually nothing is revealed before Cupertino wants it to be, and frankly, you're not going to get much here that you didn't already know -- the photographs (both external and internal) and the user manual are both still under confidentiality. Lenovo CEO says mobile internet products will soon account for '70 to 80 percent' of sales
Lenovo may mostly be associated with laptops and all-business desktops these days, but it looks like the company's CEO hopes that won't be the case for too much longer. Speaking with the AP, Yang Yuanqing dropped the somewhat surprising statement that he expects mobile internet products to account for between 70 and 80 percent of the company's sales "within three to five years." AT&T hasn't been quite as forthcoming with the exact details of its post-3G plans as T-Mobile and Verizon have been recently, but FierceBroadbandWireless appears to have wrested a tidbit from wireless boss Ralph de la Vega in a recent interview. Vodafone axes paid GPS following Nokia, Google apps
Vodafone today said it has shut down Wayfinder, the company providing its subscription GPS service. The move has cost 90 jobs and is characterized as a direct reaction to the availability of free Ovi Maps on Nokia phones and, to a lesser degree, Google Maps Navigation on Android. The two render Wayfinder redundant as they offer the same or better turn-by-turn but without the monthly rate.

Apple TV off main store; iPad retail already dry?
Apple's iPad pre-orders have pushed the Apple TV out of the main page, observers have told Electronista and MacNN. The device is still available through Apple's iPod section but has lost the position it has largely occupied since it was launched in 2007. Apple hasn't given a reason for the shift.

iPad presales as high as 20,000+ per hour
The initial rush of iPad pre-orders may have seen sales as high as 20,000 or more per hour, according to early estimates. The CEO of Phanfare, Andrew Erlichson, notes that his company bought two iPads in the space of 30 minutes. Despite the short interval, the order numbers were about 10,000 apart, which extrapolates into the 20,000 figure. Though accuracy may be affected non-iPad orders, these are likely to be in the minority given the early hour at which they were placed.

Wacom Cintiq 21UX hands-on
It almost too much to take in all at once. Sure, the $1,999 Cintiq 21UX pen display is priced out of reach for most of us mere mortals who "don't draw good," but the pure lustworthiness of this unit sure makes us try to forget that inconvenient fact. The expanded movability of Wacom's latest is commendable, the pen input is naturally great, the screen is beautiful, and even those new rear-mounted touchpads seem helpful. It would take someone much more familiar with professional draw-ist-ing to really speak to the more specific merits of the 21UX, but from a mere standpoint of inspiring irrational desire in our hearts, Wacom seems to have done a pretty good job this time out. FCC comes through with a Consumer Broadband Test app for iPhone, Android and the home
We talk about the FCC a lot here, but usually the ways ye olde Commission affects our lives are indirect. A little extra spectrum here, a nice leaked image there, that kind of thing. Not this time, though, as the FCC is getting involved directly with its own Consumer Broadband Test app, designed to probe network latencies and download speeds on your home connection or mobile device. 3G-iPad mit Kontrolle fürs Datenvolumen
In den USA und - davon gehen wir aus - auch hier wird es volumenbasierte Datentarife für das 3G-iPad geben. Wie nun aus den heute von Apple aktualisierten Webseiten hervorgeht, hat man erfreulicherweise jederzeit die Kontrolle über das bereits verbrauchte Datenvolumen. Die aktuellen Werte lassen sich über die Geräteeinstellungen abrufen. Zudem warnt das iPad seinen Nutzer, bevor das Datenvolumen komplett aufgebraucht ist: Bei 20 Prozent Restmenge, bei 10 Prozent und ein letztes Mal wenn nichts mehr übrig ist.
Wie es sich mit diesen Optionen in Deutschland im Detail verhält bleibt abzuwarten. In den USA kann der Anwender seinen Datentarif sogar direkt über die iPad-Einstellungen ändern - Voraussetzung dafür ist allerdings, dass der Anbieter mitspielt. Apple hat hier einen Vertrag mit AT&T, gut möglich, dass sich bei uns ein verlgeichbares Angebot in Zusammenarbeit mit der Telekom findet.

Nokia motions to dismiss Apple's counterclaims
Nokia as a response to Apple's countersuit on Thursday put forward a motion to dismiss Apple's claims. The argument insists that Apple's counterclaims are "designed to divert attention" away from the iPhone's alleged violation of Nokia's 3G patents. In the 28-page motion, it maintains that it tried negotiating "fair" royalties with Apple but that the American company doesn't have a right to sue simply because it feels the rates are too steep or the contract harsh.

Apple loses bid to control use of 'i' in product names
An Australian trademark tribunal has rejected Apple's attempt to prevent some companies from using a lowercase "i" in their names, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. At the center of the case is DOPi, a brand of bags and cases for Apple products sold by the Sydney-based Wholesale Central. Apple complained to IP Australia, the government body behind the tribunal, that people could potentially confuse DOPi products for its own, as the name is a reversed take on "iPod."

Heute hat Apple nicht nur das iPad im US-Store für Vorbestellungen freigegeben, auch auf der iPad-Website hat sich einiges getan. Die einzelnen Features lassen sich nun ganz genau in detaillierten Beschreibungen einsehen. Zusätzlich dazu ist auf der Website für die technischen Daten jetzt der kleine Hinweis auf den Button zu sehen, der Bildschirmrotation blockieren lässt, wie wir bereits soeben berichteten. iPad mute switch magicked into a 'screen rotation lock' overnight, a flurry of other tidbits emerge
Apple's pushing out a few more scraps of info about the iPad in conjunction with the launch of pre-orders. One of the quirkier details is that what was previously known as the mute switch on the iPad -- similar to the one on the iPhone -- is now known as the "screen rotation lock" on Apple's website. We suppose it makes more sense for this sort of device, both due to the "hold it any way you feel like" marketing push, and since it's less likely to start ringing in the middle of a Remember Me screening than your iPhone is. Verbraucherzentrale geht gegen unzulässige Werbung auf Kinder-Portalen vor
Viele Webseiten, die sich an Kinder richten, enthalten nach Ansicht des Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (vzbv) unzulässige Werbung. Das hat die Dachorganisation von 42 Verbraucherverbänden in einer Überprüfung von Spieleportalen festgestellt und hat eigenen Angaben zufolge Betreiber von Kinderportalen wegen unlauterer Werbung abgemahnt. Fünf Anbieter haben bereits eine Unterlassungserklärung unterzeichnet, in zwei Fällen will der Verband den Klageweg beschreiten und vier Verfahren befinden sich noch im außergerichtlichen Verfahrensstadium.

United puts the kibosh on in-fligh video chat, one family seriously 'bummed'
It may not be illegal to tuck your kids into bed via iChat while taking advantage of United's in-flight WiFi, but that didn't stop a flight attendant from ending John Battelle's (admittedly precious) use of the service during a flight two days ago. Apple briefly overtook discount retailer Walmart in market cap on Friday morning, says Fortune. Sony moves just 17K PSP Gos in Japan
Sony has sold just 17,618 PSP Go handhelds in Japan over the past three months, German magazine GameFront and Japanese analyst firm Media Create this week. The Go was not only the poorest-selling model over the period but has seen its sales taper to below levels reserved for previous-generation consoles. Chrome OS ist laut Google auf dem Plan

Es ist eine Weile still geworden um Googles eigenes Betriebssystem Chrome OS. Von "irgendwann in der zweiten Hälfte 2010" war vage die Rede gewesen. Eric Schmidt hat auf dem Abu Dhabi Media Summit bestätigt, dass Chrome OS noch immer in dem oben erwähnten Zeitrahmen zu erwarten wäre. Noch immer kein konkreter Termin, aber die Entwickler scheinen auf der Spur zu sein. Scheint seltsam, aber man dürfte sich vielleicht eher auf das Ende der zweiten Jahreshälfte einstellen?

Auf der iPad-Spezifikationsseite ist seit kurzem ein interessantes Detail zu finden, das eins zu eins zu Fundstücken im OS passt: ein zusätzlicher Schalter über dem Lautstärkeregler erlaubt es dem Nutzer die automatische Bildrotation zu blockieren. Ein solches Feature wird von Kunden schon lange nachgefragt, auch beim iPhone. France's three strikes anti-piracy law has actually increased the amount of piracy in the country, a new study has revealed. Despite the threat of being permanently disconnected from the Internet in the country, frequent downloaders increased their activity 3 percent since the law, also known as Hadopi, passed last fall. While BitTorrent use did drop from 17.1 percent to 14.6 percent, any who gave up torrents simply moved to streams or to private hosts using uploaders, which are difficult if not impossible to track with current methods.

US-Kunden können das iPad ab sofort vorbestellen
Jetzt ist es offiziell: alle US-Kunden können ab heute das iPad im Apple US-Store vorbestellen. Das iPad ist wie bereits angekündigt ab 499 US-Dollar verfügbar. Ab dem 3. Lazy humans, your dream has come true: a robot that could carry food and drink from the kitchen straight to your couch-borne position without you having to get up. It's the Toshiba Wheelie, a balancing bot that zips around on two wheels like an autonomous Segway, but with the added bonus of retractable runners on the front and back to keep it from toppling should it ever suffer an abrupt power failure. Carnegie Mellon student shows that 64 pixels is enough for Mario (video)
There are 2,073,600 pixels in a 1080p TV, yet Carnegie Mellon student Chloe Fan has blown our minds by showing that you only need 64 of them to have a little fun with Super Mario Bros. She wired an Arduino to an 8 x 8 LED matrix through a breadboard, then scaled the first level of the game down to a resolution that makes the 160 x 144 resolution Game Boy look positively high def. The controls are similarly simplified: one button to move Mario (the slightly more orange dot) right, and a second to jump. USA: iPad kann vorbestellt werden
Während wir hierzulande noch weder exakte Preise noch das von Apple geplante Auslieferungsdatum kennen, lässt sich das iPad in den USA nun vorbestellen. Microsoft loses second Word patent appeal, on the hook for $240 million in damages
And the intellectual property rollercoaster continues. The BBC is reporting that Microsoft's appeal against a judgment granting $240 million in damages due to content in Word that infringed on patents held by i4i was today rejected, leaving the Redmond giant with a huge fine to pay atop its undoubtedly sky-high lawyer bills. In the latest ruling, the judges state their belief that Microsoft was explicitly aware of i4i's patents before implementing the relevant XML code into Word, which is about as damning as these things can get. Still, Microsoft might be able to appeal yet again, depending on a panel ruling on the matter, and if all else fails, this can be taken all the way to the Supreme

Lenovo: mobile Internet to be 80% of sales in five years
The vast majority of Lenovo's sales will come from Internet-capable portable devices in five years, company chief Yang Yuanqing stated on Friday. He observed that ThinkPads and IdeaPads already outweigh desktops but that fully 70 to 80 percent of Lenovo's devices will be mobile Internet devices of some kind within as little as three and no more than five years. Der Bitkom hat mit Partnern ein Aktionskonzept zu Cloud Computing entwickelt. Did you by any chance get in on the early QUE proReader pre-order? Well, we've got news for you that might be good or bad depending upon your perspective. A pre-orderer just forwarded us an email received from Richard Archuleta, CEO of Plastic Logic, detailing a shipment delay from mid-April to sometime in the summer, a date echoed by the QUE product site at Barnes & Noble. According to the email, the delay is due to a desire to "fine-tune the features and enhance the overall product experience." Wir sind mal gespannt was Apple dazu zu sagen hat, aber Barnes & Noble, einer der größten Buchhändler in den USA, verspricht schon zum Launch des iPad seine eigene E-Book Reader Software auf Apples letzten Traum zu bringen. Für umsonst versteht sich. Damit hätte man dann Zugriff nicht nur auf den Apple Book Store sondern auch auf den B&N eBookstore. Da wird das Kindle App fürs iPad doch nicht lange auf sich warten lassen. Und mit ein wenig Glück kommt die App auch an den App Store Wächtern vorbei, obwohl sie die Funktion eines Systemimmanenten Apps einfach verdoppelt.

Darkworks introduced its TriOviz for Games SDK yesterday during GDC, and while TriOviz technology has been around for years in Hollywood, it wasn't until today that this same technology debuted for console and PC titles. Analyst: Apple set to blow past guidance this quarter
Apple might be set to blow past its guidance provided for the company's second fiscal quarter, according to Majestic Research analyst Tony Berkman. Although Apple routinely beats its own guidance, and the Street consensus, Berkman believes Q2 revenues will be at least ten percent higher than the company's projection of $11 billion to $11.4 billion.

We've heard numerous reports today that Apple Corporate customers are getting calls from their reps asking how many iPads they want. Orders are then taken over the phone. They still have to wait until April 3rd but they are at the front of the queue. How nice.
In other news, these corporate reps are saying that individuals will be limited to two iPads/person initially until supply catches up with demand globallywhich might be awhile.

Hardware dongle jailbreaks and boots iPhones
An electronic engineer has developed a hardware dongle that allegedly jailbreaks an iPhone. The device reportedly can be used to either jailbreak and 'hacktivate' a new iPhone, or boot a jailbroken handset that gets stuck in recovery mode. A 9V battery provides power, allowing users to restart their jailbroken iPhones while away from a computer.

OptiTrack mixes motion capture with a virtual camera for delicious, Avatar-esque results
We knew virtual camera systems are starting gain traction, particularly in the world of cinema and within James Cameron's little set of toys, but it's pretty wild to see one in action. NaturalPoint is showing off its OptiTrack motion capture system at GDC, a budget-friendly multi-camera setup (if $6k is your idea of budget-friendly), but it also has a prototype of sorts of its upcoming virtual camera system. The camera's orientation and movement is actually tracked in the same way a motion capture suit is, and if you're in the same tracking space as a motion capture actor you can do "real" camera work with a live 3D rendered preview of the action. Unreal Engine 3 up and running on webOS, and we've got video!
Palm just showed us the Unreal Engine 3 running on webOS, which apparently took a couple weeks to port over to the platform using that fancy new PDK. It runs at a pretty smooth clip, with just a tiny bit of artifacting in our enemy's death animation. As an added bit of wow factor, Palm has it currently setup to demonstrate the game at 1 fps when in card view. Like most touchscreen shooters, this doesn't really solve the problem of simulating dual analog sticks, but it's still a fun and good looking engine for a mobile device. We're still unaware of any games that have been built for the mobile engine, which has now been shown for iPhone,

Cellphone inventor switches from iPhone to Droid
Early cellphone pioneer Marty Cooper has admitted both in a C-SPAN interview (video below) and on Twitter that he has at least temporarily switched from an iPhone to a Motorola Droid. Naturally, we need to first disclaim this noise by saying that rumors of third-party multitasking capability in the iPhone are as old as the iPhone SDK itself. That said, it's hard to ignore a new reference to a "multitasking dialog box" buried deep within the iPhone SDK 3.2 beta that -- while not new to beta 4 specifically -- we're told didn't exist in 3.1.3.
