iPhone OS 4.0 points to camera flash on upcoming handset
Apple's fourth-generation iPhone may integrate a camera flash module for capturing pictures in low-light conditions. Developers reportedly noticed a variety of new camera functions contained in the framework of the iPhone 4.0 beta released earlier on Thursday, according to AppleInsider. The code includes functions labeled AVCaptureDevice.hasFlash, AVCaptureDevice.flashMode, and AVCaptureDevice.hasTorch.

CTL gets into tablet arena with 2go Slate
CTL launched a surprise entry into the tablet world on Thursday by showing a 2go Slate. Like HP's model, it shares some aesthetic similarities to the iPad and uses a customized version of the Windows 7 interface. The CTL version will actually be more advanced as it will use a modern, Pine Trail-era 1.66GHz Atom processor that should give it longer battery life and more performance.

Alienware M11x getting NVIDIA Optimus and new Intel CPUs this summer?
Either someone at Alienware is reading our reviews or the engineers over there happen to be as smart as us. What was our top complaint about the M11x? The lack of NVIDIA Optimus to automatically switch between the IGP and the GT335M GPU to help save battery life, of course. Over 450,000 iPads sold to date, Apple reveals
Today's iPhone 4.0 event has also exposed a number of facts and figures about Apple sales. The company says for instance that it has sold over 450,000 iPads so far, meaning that roughly 150,000 have been bought online and at retail since the 300,000-plus recorded on launch day. The number is well below a recent estimate calling for 530,000 units, though Apple CEO Steve Jobs notes that Best Buy stores are temporarily out of stock.

Well, what do we have here? Indeed, it is another Windows 7, Atom-powered tablet, but this one happens to be from CTL, reputable maker of those Classmate PCs. Road to iPhone OS 4.0: Multitasking
Gross war der Wunsch in der iPhone-Community (und den Medien, und fast überall anderswo), dass das iPhone OS doch endlich auch Apps von Drittanbietern Multitasking erlauben soll. Mit dem iPhone OS 4.0, welches Apple am heutigen Abend der Öffentlichkeit erstmals zeigte, ist dies nun möglich. iPhone OS 4 liefert den Entwicklern sieben neue Multitasking-Dienste, welche es den Apps erlauben, Aufgaben im Hintergrund zu erledigen während andere Applikationen laufen oder wenn das Gerät im Ruhezustand ist. Dank den sieben Multitasking-Diensten sollen gar die Batterielaufzeit und Performance des iPhones geschont werden, denn normalerweise steht Multitasking bei Geräten der iPhone-Klasse für viel kürzere Batterielaufzeit und natürlich exzessiv weniger Performance.

Barnes & Noble Nook seen lying in wait at Best Buy
We've already had pretty clear indication that the Barnes & Noble Nook would be going on sale at Best Buy soon, and we now have our firmest evidence yet courtesy of a tipster who has found Nooks aplenty lurking behind the scenes at the retailer. What's more, as you can see in the shot of an inventory screen after the break, it seems all but certain that the launch date is indeed April 18th, although there's still no confirmation of a price -- we wouldn't be counting on any discounts over Barnes & Noble itself, though.

iPhone OS 4 hands-on
Okay, so we're currently holding our breath while the developer preview of iPhone OS 4 installs on our 3GS -- a process that seems to be, uh, not going so well, but we wanted to share these quick shots we took from the simulator in the meantime. The dock is now 3D, like the one in Snow Leopard and on the iPad, multitasking works just like you'd expect -- you can swipe left and right to see more open apps -- and the Game Center app is present, although not functional. Game Center, iAd, iBooks update premiere at iPhone event
At today's iPhone 4.0 event in Cupertino, Apple simultaneously announced several related initiatives. Among these is Game Center, a unifying social network for handheld games. The service should in many ways mimic Microsoft's Xbox Live, supporting achievements, leaderboards and matchmaking, the latter with the ability to send invites to friends. BlackBerry 9650 spotted in the wild again, 'Bold' branding confirmed
The Tour branding never made a lot of sense -- RIM's most recently-released high-end portrait QWERTY device for CDMA networks occupies the same market position as the Bold over on GSM networks, so the name difference is kind of arbitrary and more than just a little bit confusing. RED Station makes modular storage look good
ARRI may have attracted the majority of attention from camera nerds at this year's NAB show with its ALEXA camera, but RED is making a respectable showing itself, and has now introduced its new RED Station modular storage unit. That consists of a typically RED-looking base station, along with either a CompactFlash card reader module or a 2.5-inch SSD / hard drive reader, or both. Today Apple's online store has a small selection of refurbished Mac minis starting at $499 for the 2GHz Mini with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. Also priced at $499 is the 2.26GHz Mac mini with 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. Priced slightly higher at $679 is the 2.53GHz Mac mini with 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. Last on the list is the 2.53GHz Mini with Snow Leopard Server, 4GB of RAM and dual 500GB hard drives for $849.

Apple has posted the preliminary version of the iPhone OS 4 Software Development Kit, also known as the iPhone SDK 4 beta, to its Developer Web Site. Weitere Details des heutigen Events
Apple gab heute auf dem iPhone OS 4 Even auch einige andere Details bekannt. So wurden insgesamt 450.000 iPads verkauft, am ersten Tag bereits 300.000. Bis jetzt wurden 600.000 iBooks verkauft, iPad Apps wurde bis jetzt über 3,5 Million heruntergelassen, bereits am ersten Tag wurde die Millionen-Marke erreicht. Außerdem gab man bekannt, zum dritten Mal in Folge in diesem Jahr den JD Power Customer Satisfaktion Award gewonnen zu haben.

Steve Jobs is never one to mince words when taking questions from the press, and he just made it very clear how he feels about other platforms during the iPhone OS 4 event when asked about task management:
Q: How do you close applications when multitasking?
A: (Scott Forstall) You don't have to. The user just uses things and doesn't ever have to worry about it.
A: (Steve Jobs) It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

Apple hat heute im kalifornischen San Francisco das iPhone OS 4 vorgestellt, das bereits im Sommer an die Nutzer verteilt werden soll. Dabei gibt es zahlreiche neue Funktionen: So wird das iPhone endlich Multitasking beherrschen. We'd previously heard rumors that Quattro Wireless was Apple's consolation prize after a deal with bigger mobile advertising rival AdMob fell through, and Steve Jobs confirmed it on no uncertain terms at the Q&A session following today's iPhone OS 4.0 event: "we tried to buy a company called AdMob but Google snatched it away." Indeed they did, though that deal hasn't yet been approved by the Federal Trade Commission while Apple's already up, up and away with its iAd solution, so it seems like everything shook out for the best -- if you're an iPhone developer, anyway.

Die Anwender dürfen sich auf mehr als 100 neue Funktionen freuen, darunter Multitasking für Apps von Drittanbietern; Ordner zur besseren Organisation und besserem Zugriff auf Apps; die Anwendung Mail mit vereinheitlichtem Posteingang sowie iBooks, Apples E-Book-Reader und der zugehörige Online-Buchladen iBookstore, der kürzlich mit dem iPad eingeführt worden ist.

If you were wondering exactly what Apple had in mind with its acquisition of Quattro Wireless a few months back, the picture gets a little clearer today with the announcement of the iAd mobile ad platform alongside iPhone OS 4.0 today. Opening the iPhone OS 4.0 Event today, Steve Jobs reported that Apple has sold 450,000 iPads since its initial U.S. launch last Saturday. Jobs noted that on the first day of the iPad launch the company sold 250,000 iBooks and 1 million iPad apps and that as of today a total of 600,000 iBooks and 3.5 million iPad apps have been purchased. Barnes & Noble rushing to put Nook in Best Buy
Barnes & Noble's retail e-reader plans were spoiled early today with a slip from Best Buy's inventory system. The retailer will be the first outside of Barnes & Noble itself to carry the Nook and is expected to carry it on April 18th. Apple ponders USB/DisplayPort cable, peer-to-peer payment
Having just won a collection of patents, Apple has been revealed to be pursuing at least two more ideas. One pair of patent applications, originally submitted in September 2009, depict a cable that would merge DisplayPort and USB 3.0 into one connector. Apple granted design patent on Cover Flow
It was patent-grantin' day at the USPTO on Tuesday, and while most of the patents handed out to Apple, HP, Microsoft and others were pretty boring, it looks like Apple patent number D613,300 is going to make some waves -- it's a design patent on Apple's Cover Flow UI element. That's a design patent, not a utility patent, so it covers the look of the system and not its functionality; think of it as covering the distinctive shape of a Coke bottle and not how it works and you'll get it. That means Apple now has the ability to sue anyone using a system that looks "substantially similar" to Cover Flow, so Symbian^3 and Songbird are probably in for some changes.

Angesichts des vielfältigen Leistungsumfangs des iPad geht beinahe unter, dass man das neue Apple-Tablet auch als erstklassiger digitaler Bilderrahmen verwenden kann. iPad sells out at Best Buy, sees minor Apple shortages
Best Buy late Wednesday confirmed that it had sold out of iPads four days after launch. While some stores had sold out on launch day, all 673 of the participating retail shops now say they won't have replacement stock until Sunday the 11th. Wi-LAN sues Apple, LG, more over Bluetooth patent
Wi-LAN on Thursday continued its practices of using lawsuits in place of business by filing a new complaint against a large portion of the technology industry. Nokia makes Comes With Music DRM-free in China
Nokia tried to rekindle interest in Comes With Music today by launching it in China without copy protection. Sony and FIFA release more details on World Cup 2010 3D broadcast
Sony and FIFA have just released a list of World Cup 2010 games that'll be broadcast in 3D, with ESPN taking care of the US audience, Sogecable for Spain, and more partners to come (including eight matches for selected 3D cinemas around the world). Out of all ten stadiums, only five of these -- Soccer City and Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth -- are chosen for the 3D broadcast, which sadly leaves out Rustenberg and its England-USA match that most of us here anticipate. Die Marktforscher und Mobile App Store-Spezialisten von Distimo stellen einen aktuellen Report zu Apples iPad vor. Er beruht auf Zahlen aus dem Distimo-Netzwerk im US-Markt bis zum 06.04.2010. Zentrale Ergebnisse der Erhebung: Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren 2.385 Apps exklusiv für das iPad verfügbar. Das am stärksten vertretene Genre ist Spiele (833 Apps, 35%), gefolgt von Unterhaltung und Bildung mit 260 bzw. 205 Apps. Dennoch sind Apps aus dem Bereich Spiele und Unterhaltung auf dem iPhone bislang populärer als auf dem iPad, da laut Distimo 70% der erfolgreichsten iPhone Apps einer dieser Kategorien entstammen, im Gegensatz zu 40% beim iPad.
83% of der exklusiven iPad-Apps sind Paid Apps - im Gegensatz zu (erstaunlichen) 73% der iPhone Apps. Schweiz: 100’000 iPads bis Ende 2010?
Noch geht es zwei, drei Wochen bis das iPad offiziell auch in der Schweiz ankommt. Aktuell gibt es den neuen Apple-Tablet-Computer einzig in Apples «Heimmarkt», in den USA, zu erwerben, doch bereits viele Händler anderer Länder setzen auf Importe aus den USA und bringen den iPad so bereits vor dem offiziellen Verkaufsstart ausserhalb der USA in die entsprechenden Märke … so unter anderem auch in der Schweiz. Hierzulande verkauft Digitec bereits iPads, wie wir heute Morgen berichteten.
Ende April kommt die WLAN- und die WLAN+3G-Version des iPads in neun Ländern auf den Markt. Zu diesen neuen Ländern gehört neben Deutschland auch die Schweiz. Noch ist nicht bekannt zu welchen Konditionen und von wem die iPads hierzulande vertrieben werden. Auch sind bisher keinerlei Infos verfügbar was die Swisscom, Orange und die anderen Provider bezüglich der 3G-Angebote planen.

Schon im vergangenen Dezember hatte der Terminkalender des Moscone Centers Hinweise darauf gegeben, wann die diesjährige WWDC veranstaltet wird. Zwischen dem 28. Juni und dem 2. Umfrage: Risiken von Cloud-Computing überwiegen
IT-Verantwortliche in US-Firmen sehen Cloud-Computing noch skeptisch. Rund 45 Prozent vertreten die Meinung, dass die Technik mehr Risiken als Vorteile bringe. 38 Prozent sehen eine ausgeglichene Balance zwischen Risiken und Vorteilen, und nur für 17 Prozent überwiegen die Vorteile. Laut einem Interview mit Justin Long, der in den Apple Werbespots den Mac an der Seite von John Hodgman spielt, soll es wohl keine weiteren Spots in diesem Stil geben. Die Get a Mac-Werbespots wurden von 2006 an ausgestrahlt und wurden für Apple von der Werbeagentur TBWA/Media Arts Lab ins Leben gerufen. Die letzten drei Spots, Broken Promises, Teeter Tottering und PC News wurden genau zum Verkaufsstart von Windows 7 am 23. Oktober 2009

«Community36»-Messe abgesagt; 2011 wieder grosse Schweizer ITC-Messe?
Früher war die Orbit in Basel (später «Orbit/iEX» in Zürich) die grösste Schweizer IT-Messe. Letztes Jahr wurde im Mai die letzte Orbit auf dem Zürcher Messegelände durchgeführt – 2010 hätte die «Community 36» folgen sollen. An Stelle der Messe sollte damit «eine Community aufgebaut werden». Vor einem knappen Jahr berichten wir: «Der Veranstalter Exhibit & More hat gestern über die neue Plattform informiert: ‘Community 36’ soll eine Gemeinschaft mit Mitgliederkarte werden, welche über das Jahr verteilt verschiedene Aktivitäten wie Fachveranstaltungen und Konferenzen sowie Networking-Plattformen organisiert. Der Höhepunkt soll jährlich ein ‘Community 36’ genannter Non-Stop-Event werden, welcher 36 Stunden lang dauert.» Dieser Event hätte vom 6. bis 7. Mai 2010, wiederum im Messezentrum Zürich, stattfinden sollen. Nun wurde «Community 36» kurzfristig abgesagt. Die Zürcher Kette «Digitec» wagt sich einmal mehr an Parallelimporte zu Apple Produkte: Digitec bietet ab sofort iPads in der Schweiz an. Die neuen Apple-Tablet-Computer werden offiziell erst Ende April auf den Schweizer Markt gebracht — Digitec kommt dem offiziellen Verkaufskanal nun zuvor und bietet ab sofort aus den USA importierte Geräte an. Vorerst ist nur das 16 GB Modell mit WLAN verfügbar, später sollen aber auch die 32-GB- und 64-GB-WLAN-Modelle folgen. Die iPads wurden im Digitec-Online-Shop bereits als Bestseller markiert. Der Preis liegt beim 16-GB-WLAN-Modell bei CHF 799.–, das 32-GB-WLAN-Modell kostet CHF 949.– und für das grösste Modell mit 64-GB und WLAN muss CHF 1089.– berappt werden. Estimate says Apple already past 500,000 iPads sold
iPad sales have already cracked the 500,000 mark with less than a week on the market, an estimate by Chitika found today. Basing it on the amount of new iPads connecting to Chitika's ad network and accounting for the company's share of the market, it believes that over 530,000 of the Apple tablets have been sold as of Wednesday night. The prediction would have Apple almost doubling its 300,000 launch day units and passing that figure by the end of the week or sooner.

Developer uncovers iPad's AdLib web-based app framework
Apple has apparently created a new web-based framework for the iPad, potentially allowing developers to create web apps using HTML, CSS and JavaScript code. Done21 developer Jim Hoskins allegedly uncovered the framework, known as AdLib, while exploring the iPad User Guide, which opens in Safari but mimics functionality typically reserved for native apps.

FTC now likely to block Google's buyout of AdMob
The FTC is now likely to vote against Google's buyout of AdMob, a source said Wednesday. Once undecided about the deal, the agency is now said by an unnamed Reuters source to see a "significant competitive problem" and could sue Google for its behavior. Talks are still underway with Google and may head off the threat, but progress if any isn't certain.

Pulling back from the verge of a bottomless pit of vaporware despair comes the Squeezebox Touch, the latest in Logitech's line of connected music players that had originally been slated to launch way back in December of last year. The device is the spiritual successor to the Squeezebox 3, eschewing the older model's VFD display for a 4.3-inch color touchscreen LCD and adding in support for SD cards and USB mass storage devices directly from the unit itself.
