iTravel: Neues Apple-Patent soll Check-In erleichtern
Schon heute ist es oft möglich, ganz ohne das übliche Flugticket zu verreisen. Damit iPhone-Besitzer auch in Zukunft immer auf dem neuesten technischen Stand sind, will Apple sich jetzt eine Applikation namens iTravel patentieren lassen, die von der Reservierung bis zur Bordkarte alles übernimmt.

NVIDIA Ion 2 Acer and ASUS netbooks won't ship until late May
NVIDIA's next generation Ion platform was announced back in early March, so naturally we've been wondering where all the souped-up netbooks based on the tech have been hiding. We wish we had better news, but it looks like the wait will have to go on a little while longer. Google's Agnilux buy for Android/Chrome on more devices
Google's buyout of Agnilux was motivated by a desire to port Android and Chrome to other devices, a source said Wednesday. The former PA Semi workers reportedly made the swap not to make hardware but to help Google's OS platforms run on hardware they don't normally use. This could include the Android-based Google TV set-top box and more efficient tablets.

AT&T's Q1 results: earnings down thanks to one-time charge, NYC seeing 'solid improvements'
AT&T's first quarter results posted this morning look generally quite positive for the company -- it saw its highest first-quarter net wireless adds in history (1.9 million) and both postpaid and total churn are at their lowest levels ever, suggesting that subscribers are happier with their service than they have been in recent months, the thought of tantalizing hardware is keeping them around, they're too worn down to bother switching, or some combination of the above. Net income of $2.4 billion was down a bit year over year -- $600 million, to be exact -- thanks to a one-time charge related to some tax craziness that only accountants would fully comprehend, but had it not been for that, they'd be looking at having banked $3.5 billion. Privacy gaffe leads to multiple firings at Ohio Apple Store
"Several" workers at the Legacy Village Apple Store in Lyndhurst, Ohio have been fired following an accidental privacy violation, according to a report. Sources note that when a computer is brought in for service by Apple, a standard procedure is used to backup and restore a customer's data; this normally ensures that once a restore is complete, all of the backup data is deleted, preventing leaks of sensitive information. The firings are connected to photos, finances and videos from one customer somehow ending up on another person's Mac.

Kindle officially going on sale at Target on April 25

Been itching to get another look at Garmin's decidedly un-GPS-like nuvi 3700 series? FCC requires carriers to allow roaming on unused spectrum
At its monthly meeting, the FCC panel voted on a measure that would require wireless providers to let other carriers access their networks when roaming in areas where the provider owns spectrum but doesn't offer coverage. This reverses a 2007 order, and the FCC also began discussing if automatic roaming rules should apply to mobile data services. The FCC-mandated roaming rates should also be more reasonable than they have been to date.

Adobe Camera Raw Update 5.7 erschienen

California hospital plans to give 100 iPads to doctors
A California hospital is currently planning to deploy iPads to a variety of staff members, according to PCWorld. Kaweah Delta Health Care District's director of technical services, Nick Volosin, reportedly plans to take advantage of the tablet's 10-hour battery life, which is expected to help avoid wasting time recharging notebook computers in between appointments.

It's coming... FarmVille heading to iPhone and iPad
Filed under: iPadSome will cheer, others will groan, but it seems that the love-it-or-hate-it Facebook game, FarmVille, is on its way to iPhone and iPad. A recent search of domains has uncovered both farmvilleiphone.com and farmvilleipad.com, both reserved by the same company currently overseeing Zynga's official FarmVille website. This means that sooner or later, we'll probably be seeing official clients for Apple's mobile devices.
I've played FarmVille, and I find it to be not so much a game as a "social engine" -- it's basically a bunch of hooks

Olympus E-P1 outfitted with Rollei EVF
Looking to add even more retro flavor to your Olumpus E-P1? Then you might want to consider taking after Flickr user Lok Cheung, who was inspired by the Rolleiflex TLR to create this Rollei EVF (of sorts) for the Micro Four Thirds camera. While the setup isn't actually anything more than a viewfinder for viewing the screen, Lok nontheless says the resuls are "really good," with the viewfinder resting almost right behind the lens, and the manual focus "almost as fast as you can get on a true manual camera." Not the most practical camera mod, perhaps, but certainly one of the more interesting ones.

Incase, MiLi introduce new iPhone 3G/3GS cases
Accessory makers Incase and MiLi have separately announced new case models for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Incase's contribution is new colors of the Chrome Slider, a shell case with a glossy exterior and a removable bottom. Rubber rails add to shock absorbency, and openings allow the use of headphones, the camera and all buttons. The case costs $35; new colors include Mercury Blue, Argon Green and Pearl Pink.

Envy 17 pops up on HP.com begging to be officially launched
HP's clearly been updating its website with new products over the past few days, but our guess is that the Envy 17 that was just added to the domain slipped through a bit early. We wish there were more details thrown up there, but unfortunately the spec and data sheet pages come up blank. Intel Sandy Bridge to have on-die video, 35W desktop CPUs
Intel's Sandy Bridge architecture should be much more efficient even for desktops, a slew of newly uncovered documentation shows. The design will merge the graphics from their place simply on the same package to within the processor itself. Making the switch should speed up graphics without affecting the chip's footprint, although it will need a different socket.

Adobe: We won't spend any more time on Flash to iPhone features

Loyal Apple customer bases waited for stores
Filed under: RetailA study by Experian Simmons demonstrates that customers in several of the USA's ten most Apple-loyal regions waited 5 years or more for an Apple Store to open.
The study ranked US cities by the number of adults who own (at least) one iPod, iPhone or Mac. It shouldn't shock you that San Francisco/San Jose area of California ranked highest (32.3 percent of adults met their criteria), while Boston, San Diego, New York City, Chicago, Denver and Las Vegas were also among the top ten.
DC, the study points out, is still without a store, despite 30.1 percent of its residents meeting Experian's criteria.

Apple extending ticketing ambitions to travel?
Apple's interest in ticketing may go well beyond music, a newly-published patent application suggests. The USPTO recently disclosed Apple's ideas on Concert Ticket +, an iPhone app which would form the heart of an event ticketing system linked to iTunes, kiosks and physical passes. Bill Gates on iPad: "it's okay"

Nach dem Umstieg auf VBulletin 4 und somit auch nach einem kompletten Systemwechsel ist es aus verschiedenen Gründen still geworden um die hauseigene Apfeltalk-App und wir entschieden uns zumindest Tapatalk für unsere User zu installieren. Doch Apfeltalk wäre nicht Apfeltalk wenn auch das schwerste Projekt nicht irgendwann umgesetzt wird. Da die App zum Start ausgesprochen erfolgreich war, durfte die Entwicklung einfach nicht aufhören. Botched McAfee update shutting down XP machines worldwide
We can't officially confirm this yet, but we're hearing from all over that a bad McAfee for Windows XP update is causing computers worldwide to shut down. Apparently the update deletes the svchost.exe file, which then triggers a false-positive in McAfee itself and sets off a chain of uncontrolled restarts and loss of networking functionality. Yeah, wild -- Twitter is basically going nuts, and McAfee's support site appears to be down. There's a fix out there, but it may be too late -- we've heard anecdotally that an Intel facility has been affected, as well Dish Network call centers, and we're sure there are going to be more reports as the day wears on.

AT&T zählt 2.7 Millionen aktivierte iPhones in Q1/2010

Nokia exec sees camera phones obsoleting DSLRs

The USPTO has officially granted 15 new patents to Apple, covering several different areas of technology. AT&T: exciting "product refreshes" this quarter
AT&T may have dropped hints about the timing of an iPhone update today in the conference call discussing its latest quarterly results. iPad geraubt - Finger abgerissen

Pulitzer Prize winner's app now accepted into App Store

Video: iPad-Diebstahl kostet Finger
Nach der jetzt vom amerikanischen TV-Sender CBS veröffentlichten Geschichte eines blutigen iPad-Diebstahls in Denver/Colorade, scheint die Bestellung des iPads auf dem Postweg angeraten. Filial-Käufer sollten zumindest einen Rucksack mitnehmen, wenn das Gerät Ende Mai auch in Deutschland erhältlich sein wird.
So berichtet CBS über einen iPad-Diebstahl am vergangenen Montag der, wohl wegen dem fest um die Hand gewickelten Band der von Apple ausgegebenen Plastik-Tasche, den Verlust eines Fingers nach sich zog.
Bill Jordan, Opfer des in diesem Überwachungsvideo aufgezeichneten Diebstahls, wartet momentan auf die Ergreifung der Täter und wird von CBS mit den folgenden Worten zitiert: "I saw just a bone, all the skin and tendons and everything were off".

Apple stock, price targets surge following Q2 results
Apple's stock value has risen sharply following yesterday's second-quarter results, but it may have yet more room to grow, according to analysts. HTC Incredible wird verfrüht ausgeliefert (mit Video)

Ups, das hier sollte eigentlich erst am 29. April ausgeliefert werden, aber ein paar Leute haben es anscheinend bereits heute bekommen: das DROID Incredible bzw. HTC Incredible. E Ink parent company also contributing to iPad panels
The same company that makes the E Ink displays is also involved in making the iPad's screen, according to a statement made Wednesday (subscription required). Prime View International (PVI), whose E Ink division makes screens for the Kindle and Nook, said its sub-label Hydis was responsible for developing the in-plane switching (IPS) panel technology crucial to the wide viewing angles with Apple's tablet. LG Display is believed responsible for actually manufacturing the finished screen and signed a deal with PVI in December.

Seagate steigert Umsatz und Gewinn
Seagate hat seine Bilanz für das am 2. April beendete dritte Fiskalquartal 2010 vorgelegt. Demnach erwirtschaftete der Festplattenhersteller einen Nettogewinn von 518 Millionen Dollar oder 1 Dollar je Aktie. While the new Verizon Droid Incredible isn't supposed to arrive until April 29th, a few blessed pre-orderers are getting their units early. From the sound of it, there was a glitch in Verizon's system that was allowing some phone orders to be shipped right away -- sadly, that apparently has since been plugged. Interestingly, the boxes these are being shipped in so far just say "HTC Incredible," not that it's any surprise that the Droid Incredible moniker was a late-in-game addition. iPad defeats Kindle in reader poll
Filed under: iPadOver at Mashable, a poll of readers put the iPad up against the Kindle, by asking which device would "win over the hearts and minds" of Mashable readers.
The results were 48% for Apple, 36% for Kindle, and 11% preferred their books in analog format. Mashable is not a Mac fan site, so the results are, at least, interesting.
Of course it's not a scientific poll, but it's an indicator that the iPad is catching on as a preferred device for reading books and magazines.

Apple Quartalszahlen 2/10
Neuer Rekord: Das zweite Geschäftsquartal 2010 (Januar bis März) war Apples bisher erfolgreichstes Vierteljahr ausserhalb der Weihnachtssaison. Vor allem die Verkaufszahlen von Mac und iPhone sorgten für ein Ergebnis, mit dem selbst optimistische Analysten nicht gerechnet hatten: 2,94 Millionen Macs (+33%) und 8,75 Millionen iPhones (+131%) wurden verkauft. Und auch die iPod-Familie hält sich mit 10,89 Millionen Stück (-1%) noch recht gut. Der Umsatz stieg im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum um 49% und der Gewinn um 90%.

Studie: Zahl der Datenpannen steigt weiter an
Laut einer Untersuchung des Projekts Datenschutz nimmt die Zahl der Datenpannen auch 2010 weiter zu. In den ersten drei Monaten des Jahres wurden 18 gravierende Lecks, Missbrauchsfälle oder Eingriffe in die informationelle Selbstbestimmung gezählt. AT&T on Wednesday reported its best-ever first quarter, owed in large part to the iPhone. The cell carrier activated 2.7 million iPhones in early 2010, or 1.1 million more than it did a year ago. IEEE P1901 powerline networking standard passes key hurdle
You may not realize it, but powerline networking is growing up before your very eyes. It's latest milestone comes courtesy of the IEEE P1901 Working Group, which largely relies on HomePlug AV as its baseline technology, and has now seen its initial sponsor ballot pass with a whopping 80% support. That, according to the HomePlug Powerline Alliance, offers clear evidence that there is "overwhelming industry support" for the standard, and that final ratification of the standard could come as soon as the third quarter of this year. In fact, the draft standard is already so far along that companies can purchase it from the IEEE store, and get to work on products that will comply with P1901.

Datenschutzbeauftragte kritisieren Google und Facebook
Datenschutzbeauftragte aus zehn Ländern, darunter Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Irland, Italien, den Niederlanden und Spanien haben Google und Facebook wegen des aus ihrer Sicht mangelhaften Schutz der Privatsphäre kritisiert. "Google hat beim Start von Buzz Datenschutzbelange nicht angemessen umgesetzt", schreiben sie in einem offenen Brief an Google-CEO Eric Schmidt. LaDiDa is a strange little app that came out a while back. It's basically a "reverse karaoke app," in that, instead of playing music that you can sing along with, you sing, and it'll play the music back to you. The technology seems based on the same idea as Microsoft's MySong -- you hit record on the app and then sing whatever melody you want (or rap, or just play a tune on another musical instrument), and then the app quickly builds up the rest of the band around you.

Adobe stops advancing Flash-to-iPhone, focuses on Android
Adobe Product Manager Mike Chambers late yesterday said his company will no longer put development time into the Flash-to-iPhone conversion tool in Flash CS5. While it will still ship with the CS5 suite, the component won't get significant updates in the foreseeable future. Chambers stressed that Apple's ban on cross-compiling in the iPhone 4.0 SDK made it untenable to continue, and he accused Apple of being anti-competitive.

Digital Works' ReZap recharges disposable batteries, coming to North America in May
We don't know what charlatanism is afoot here, but word is that Australian company Digital Works has come up with a way to recharge non-rechargeable batteries. We'd usually scoff at such blasphemy, but the tech has been convincing enough to at least get PC Treasures (who?) to distribute the ReZap Battery Engineer on the North American continent. This little do-it-all device with juice up rechargeable and standard batteries alike -- allowing up to 10 recharges for the latter type -- and is also capable of electrifying up to four cells of varying sizes at the same time. Studie: Deutschland verbreitet die meiste Malware in Europa
Deutschland hat in Europa den höchsten Anteil an der Verbreitung von Schadcode wie Viren, Würmer und Trojaner. Das geht aus dem 15. Global Internet Security Threat Report (PDF) hervor, den Symantec gestern veröffentlicht hat. Demnach stamme 12 Prozent der in Europa verbreiteten Malware aus Deutschland. Universität sperrt iPads wegen fehlerhaftem DHCP
Wie die Princeton Universität berichtet, hat man damit begonnen ungefähr die Hälfte der im Campus-Netzwerk befindlichen iPads zunächst zu sperren. Schuld ist eine fehlerhafte DHCP-Implementierung auf den iPads, die letztendlich zu IP-Konflikten führt. Auf der China Sourcing Fair 2010 in Hongkong ist eine erstmal schlau gemachte iPhone-Halterung zu sehen, mit der das Gerät auf den Tisch gestellt, aber im Flugzeug auch an den Vordersitz gehängt werden kann. Ob das in der Praxis klappt und ob das "iFlyer" getaufte Teil der Firma Podera solide gefertigt ist, muss sich aber noch erweisen, auf den Fotos könnte man jedenfalls einen Hang zur Wackeligkeit ausmachen, wenn man das denn will. UMTS-iPad erscheint in den USA am 30. April
Die UMTS-Version des iPad erscheint in den USA nun doch noch im April. In einer Pressemitteilung gibt Apple bekannt, dass das iPad mit Mobilfunk-Chip am 30. It's no secret that Google's been on something of a shopping spree as of late, buying startups left for right like it was trying to win the final round of Supermarket Sweep. Next-gen iPhone splayed, battery probably not meant to be replaced by the unwashed masses
It's been pretty low-key, so we totally understand if you haven't heard anything about it yet, but it turns out there's a next-gen iPhone floating around somewhere outside Apple's sphere of reality-distorting influence. We'll spare you the backstory there, but Gizmodo saw fit to do a little non-destructive (more on that in a moment) teardown of the device today. There's actually not that much to see or learn from it, but we couldn't help but notice the prominently-placed translucent tab underneath the battery imploring only "authorized service providers" to proceed, which we figure is a pretty strong sign that Apple will continue its nefarious legacy of blocking owners from man

Leaked slides show Windows Phone 7's update strategy, Windows Live ID requirement, more
Though much of Microsoft's technical strategy for Windows Phone 7 materialized at MIX last month, the company stayed hazy on a handful of key details -- portions of the hardware specifications were left to guesses and hearsay, for instance, as was the software update strategy. Downloads page at Apple.com no longer being updated
Filed under: SoftwareOn March 16th, we reported that although the "Downloads" tab had been removed from Apple's homepage, the downloads page itself was still available.
However, about 10 days after that, Apple apparently ceased updating the page. The most recent app listed under "Recently Added" is March 26th, and we've been told that developers who have sent in apps have not gotten any response.
Many applications will now check and report when new versions are available, but if you are looking for applications to fit a specific need, you can still use

Microsoft already showing new Zune HD?
Director James Gunn may have seen the next-generation Zune, based on an account of a visit to a Microsoft Experience event. In addition to seeing pre-release hardware like Project Natal and the HP slate, he also claimed to have seen the "new Zune." He wasn't specific about details other than to say he didn't think he could switch due to iTunes and the apps he uses for the iPhone.

Microsoft Germany's Facebook page solidifies Kin specs
Nothing here we didn't already know, but it's nice to have some final, official confirmation: Microsoft Germany's just posted the specs for the Kin One and Kin Two on its Facebook page, and they line right up with that original, Google cached leak. As originally foretold, the Kin One will sport a 2.6-inch capacitive TFT LCD screen at 320 x 240 resolution, a 5 megapixel CMOS camera, 4GB of flash memory and a 1240 mAh battery, while the Kin Two ups its game with a 3.4-inch 480 x 320 screen, an 8 megapixel CMOS HDR shooter by Omnivision with a

Q2 breakdown shows leaps in iPhones, desktops, Asian market
In addition to posting general Q2 results, Apple has also released a more detailed breakdown (PDF) of its latest finances. Of special note may be the company's iPhone revenue, which has grown 124 percent year-over-year to hit $5.445 billion. This now easily exceeds the money from any of Apple's other businesses, even combined Mac figures.
