Intel "Sandy Bridge" graphics to be twice as fast?
Intel has reportedly told its corporate customers that the Sandy Bridge CPUs with integrated graphics processors due for release at the end of the year will have vastly improved performance. While the chipmaker quotes a doubling of performance, it does not define what it compares it to, though it is most likely the existing Nehalem CPUs. Intel is otherwise being cryptic about the chips' performance, saying only that the chips have advanced media and graphics capabilities.

Lenovo ThinkPad X201T convertible tablet hits the FCC, Australia
Well, we just saw a ThinkPad X201 Tablet turn up in a Lenovo roadmap earlier this week and, wouldn't you know it, something called the ThinkPad X201T has now also surfaced at the FCC. What's more, while the FCC isn't dishing out any details beyond the usual test reports, the convertible tablet has already turned up at Australian retailer TechBuy, which just so happens to have the complete specs for the device. Those include a 12.1-inch WXGA touchscreen, a Core i7-620LM processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a fingerprint scanner, and an 8-cell battery, to name a few features. Logitech's SqueezeBox Touch delayed yet again?
The release of the promised Logitech SqueezeBox Touch has again been delayed, according to a Thursday post by a Slim Devices developer on the official Logitech forum board. The last delay promised the touch media server would arrive this month, and Logitech is still keeping mum about why the device has been delayed. Forum members speculate Logitech ran into major software or hardware problems.

Hutchison Austria to offer discounted iPad with 2-year contract for i-Mo 3G modem
Coveting an iPad, but not willing to pay full price? If you happen to live in Austria and don't mind committing to a two-year data contract, Hutchison's got you covered. The carrier's offering a 333 Euro (approximately US $455) discount if you sign up for a 29.90 Euro, 5GB monthly data contract. Samsung may ship transparent AMOLED notebook in next year
Samsung could be the first to introduce a production notebook with a transparent display, Samsung America's digital imaging VP Reid Sullivan has revealed. After showing a 14-inch see-through AMOLED screen at CES this year, the Korean company now says that testing suggests the PC could be in shops within the next 12 months. Sullivan expects that "all" Samsung's AV hardware could use the technology soon.

Graphite 8 SP2 adds support for large-format printers
Ashlar-Vellum on Friday released Service Pack 2 for its Graphite 8 software for 2D and 3D wireframe drafting. The update adds support for several large-format printers, along with higher printing resolutions. Users can now access the company's tutorial content directly from the Graphite interface, while a variety of minor bug fixes and enhancements have also been included.

Logitech Squeezebox Touch delayed, again
Logitech's Squeezebox Touch has had a somewhat troubled launch since being announced back in September alongside the Squeezebox Radio, and it looks like the road to availability just got a bit bumpier. While Logitech isn't saying anything officially itself just yet, a Slim Devices developer has now posted on the official Squeezebox forums that we're still looking at "a couple of months until release" -- which is well off Logitech's most recent promise of a February release date, and might even bump up against its future

Panelfly, Sugarcube plan updated comic book app for iPad
Panelfly and Sugarcube are working together on an iPad version of their comic book app, a preview reveals. The current software makes it possible to buy and read comic books on an iPhone or iPod touch. While functional, it is based on a 3.5-inch screen size, making it difficult to see much detail.

HTC HD2 extended battery gets its close-up, lower price
We've already seen a render of the kickstand-equipped HTC HD2 extended battery, but renders don't power cellphones, so we're particuarly glad that CoolSmartPhone has now come through and provided some actual pictures of the actual device. What's more, it looks like the price has now dropped to £35 excluding VAT (or about $55, down from $85 before), although the promised ship date has apparently been pushed back another month to March. Motorola Droid adds mult-touch in Google Maps
Google and Verizon today quietly pushed an update to the Motorola Droid that brings multi-touch to the smartphone in limited form. The over-the-air 3.4 upgrade switches on pinch-to-zoom control in Google Maps. Unlike the Nexus One update, though, the change doesn't extend to the web browser or photo gallery.

FCC concerned that AT&T may be overloading itself with iPad announcement
Apple may have (blind?) faith in its US wireless partner, AT&T, but the FCC certainly does not. In a blog post earlier this week, Phil Bellaria - Director, Scenario Planning, Omnibus Broadband Initiative, stated that the iPad had set off a new round of concerns that AT&T might be overselling itself at the expense of its customers:

Researchers say new material could let cars be powered by their bodywork
It likely won't be ready for your next vehicle purchase, but some researchers from Imperial College London say that this rather modest-looking piece of material could eventually do nothing short change of the way that cars are powered. The material itself is still a bit of a mystery, as you might expect, but it's apparently able to store and discharge electrical energy, and (here's the real kicker) is strong and light enough to be used for a car's bodywork -- essentially making the car itself one giant battery. That would obviously open up a whole host of possibilities, including being used to complement traditional batteries for even longer runtimes, or being used on its own to make smaller and lighter vehicles. Motorola Droid gets official multitouch support -- in Google Maps, anyway
When it rains, it pours, huh, Google? Not even a week after announcing the big multitouch update for its own Nexus One, Google has turned loose a new version of Google Maps that enables pinch-to-zoom support on the Droid. Adobe CTO promises better Mac performance in Flash 10.1
Macs will perform substantially better when running Flash Player 10.1, promises Adobe's chief technical officer, Kevin Lynch. The executive claims that Flash 10 now runs at "almost exactly" the same level of CPU usage on Mac and Windows systems, where previously the Mac suffered significantly. The v10.1 update is set to use CoreAnimation, which Lynch suggests could make Macs faster than Windows in some cases.

Sling: iPhone SlingPlayer for 3G had no help from AT&T
Sling Media on Friday corrected AT&T's position on the clearance to ship a 3G-capable SlingPlayer for iPhone. While AT&T characterized the remote TV streaming app as "optimized," the Slingbox creator company's John Santoro told Ars Technica that Sling "didn't change anything" in its 3G code, or enter discussions, to satisfy AT&T's demands. The app has always had dynamic bitrate changes to match available bandwidth.

Storage: You Need More Speed?
As you probably know now, at Macbidouille/Hardmac we particularly like the SSD and their associated performance levels, bringing a new dimension of access time and boosting overall performance of our Macs. So, we did a small experiment with a MacBook Pro (2.4) with its default 250 GB Hitachi 5,400 rpm HD, offering max. 50 MB/s in reading/writing modes.
We then removed the original HD and the optical drive to install two Intel SSDs x25-m and created a software-based RAID0 volume with both of them. Results are below and speak by themselves:
Of course, having 500 MB/s in reading mode has a cost, and such RAID0 volume setting will come with some side effects: the Mac OS X software-based RAID0 is draining power from the battery, a defect or crash of one of the SSD will corrupt the entire volume. Of course, the same installation in a Mac

Sec. expert: Apple's iPhone security claims 'exaggerated'
The iPhone is not as secure as Apple would like people to believe, claims a software engineer and security specialist, Nicolas Seriot. Speaking at this week's Black Hat Conference in Arlington, Virginia, Seriot commented that while the iPhone OS theoretically sandboxes apps in order to restrict data access, the rules in place are "way too loose." Apple should not be claiming that one app cannot access data from another, he emphasized.

Software-Update für Motorola Milestone ab sofort verfügbar
Motorola hat die Android-Version 2.0.1 für das Milestone nach den Ankündigungen für Frankreich und Italien nun auch in Deutschland frei gegeben. Besitzer des Smartphones können das circa 30 MByte große Betriebssystem-Update mit Hilfe der Anwendung Motorola Software Update (17,8 MByte) auf ihren PC herunterladen und von dort auf das Telefon aufspielen. Außerdem soll eine Aktualisierung des Milestone über die Funkschnittstelle (Over the Air) möglich sein. Der Benutzer erhält dazu eine Nachricht auf sein Gerät, dass ein Update verfügbar sei. Momentan bekommen aber allen Anschein nach nur Kunden die das Smartphone bei O2 gekauft haben oder Besitzer ungebrandeter Telefone die Nachricht.

iPhone game development overtaking DS, PSP
The iPhone platform is more popular to write games for than the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, according to a new study from Game Developer Research. Demand for the iPhone has surged to where about 19 percent of all game developers are writing for the iPhone and iPod touch. The figure is more than twice as high as for the DS and PSP and results in three quarters of all mobile game developers writing for Apple's handhelds.

Amazon hat das beste Image aller Online-Shops
Amazon ist der Onlinehändler mit dem besten Image. Auch in der Februar-Ausgabe des ECC-Shopmonitor belegt er erneut den Spitzenplatz. Das Shopping-Portal konnte zuletzt sein Ansehen nach marginalen Rückgängen in den Vormonaten wieder steigern: Der Branchenprimus erreicht im Gesamtschnitt einen Imagewert von 4,61 und nähert sich damit dem Höchstwert von 5 weiter an. Kindle display maker promises touch, video in 2010
PVI chairman Scott Liu today told the press that his company will produce some of the earliest fully touchscreen and motion-capable e-paper displays this year. Current screens often need a separate touchscreen layer and are too slow to show video or other animations, but screens with either feature should be ready by the end of 2010. PVI's touchscreen technique would put the touch underneath the e-paper and eliminate the unintentional dimming of the display, a problem that has affected e-readers from Sony and others.

Neues Apple-Patent – berührungsempfindliche Rahmen
Mal wieder ist ein neuer Pantentantrag aus dem Hause Apple aufgetaucht. Diesmal geht es um einen berührungsempfindliche Displayrahmen, der das Potenzial haben soll beim iPhone, iPod sowie dem iPad eingesetzt werden zu können. Apples Erfindung wird unter der Bezeichnung “Touch Sensitive Bezel” als Patent zusammen gefasst.
Mit solchen berührungsempfindlichen Displayrahmen wäre es zum Beispiel gut möglich

Das iTablet läuft auf Windows 7 mit einem Intel 1,6GHz Prozessor, 10,2- und 12,1-Zoll Bildschirm und ist mit 35mm ca. doppelt so dick wie ein iPad. FCC worries about iPad bandwidth congestion
The iPad could potentially cause serious havoc for US data networks, say people writing on behalf of the Federal Communications Commission. USB Electronic Key Impressioner could help you be gone in 60 milliseconds
If you're stealing a car these days, there's a good chance you're not bothering to actually pick the locks, but if you are, your job is about to get a little easier. A device called the Electronic Key Impressioner is inserted into a car door and scans the position of the tumblers inside. It feeds information back to a PC over USB which then, when told the car's model, can provide the necessary information to cut the perfect key on the first attempt. Right now it only works on Fords with simple metal keys (like, say, a 1967 Shelby GT500), but the hope is to expand the device to support other manufacturers and, possibly, electronic keys in the future.

Durch Core Location erhalten Entwickler die Möglichkeit, den Aufenthaltsort eines iPhone-Besitzers (oder Snow Leopard-Nutzers) durch ihre Anwendung (meist) genau bestimmen zu lassen. ARM erweitert die Cortex CPU Serie: Eagle für Smartphones

Als wenn Cortex-A9 nicht schon genug aufwühlen würde, nicht zuletzt mit dem iPad, schickt ARM jetzt die neue Serie von Cortex-A Prozessoren ins Rennen. Angekündigt sind sie jedenfalls schon. Eagle wird speziell für Smartphones, digitale Fernseher und Mobile Rechner entwickelt und 3 Milliarden dieser Chips sind pro Jahr geplant. Apfle zeigt in seiner Browserversion von iTunes jetzt auch iPhone-Anwendungen aus dem App Store als Preview an. Die Vorschauseite ist ähnlich aufgebaut wie die App-Store-Ansicht in der Desktop-Version von iTunes, läuft aber im Browser. Verizon won't get the iPhone this year, AT&T keeps exclusive - Credit Suisse
Given widespread complaints at AT&T coverage, US iPhone-lovers are likely to wake up in denial this morning as it looks increasingly likely the network has retained its exclusive hold on the iPhone for at least another year.We don’t want to shoot the messenger, but at least one analyst this morning issued a stock downgrade against most likely alternative iPhone suitor, Verizon Wireless, expressing his belief that the latter carrier won’t be getting ‘i’ among its phones this year.

Mittlerweile hat schon der dritte Verlag der Apple Zuarbeiter, Hachette, nachgezogen und sich für Amazon auf neue Preise verständigt, die denen des iPad iBookstores näher kommen. Damit ist die Zeit wohl vorbei in denen E-Books mit einem einfachen uniformen 9,99 Dollar Preis daher kamen. Schön für die Verlage, schlecht für uns, viel schlechter aber noch für Amazon denen damit das wichtigste Argument für den Kindle gegenüber dem iPad - billige E-Books - verloren geht. Kindle display maker PVI promises touchscreens, color and flexibility in 2010 models
Love your Kindle? How about your Sony Reader? Good then lean in close because your electrophoretic display (EPD) maker wants to have a word. Prime View International (PVI) chairman Scott Liu says that his company (the owners of E Ink) will be introducing a wide variety of new e-reader displays this year including color, flexible, and touchscreen EPDs. PVI also says that response times have been improved enough to allow for animation support on products in 2010. Of course, flip books provide animation as well but we wouldn't want to use one for any considerable amount of time -- but let's wait and see what they have before coming to a conclusion.

Apple and Adobe: The Roots and Reasons Behind Today's Situation
One does not need to be a wizard or a medium to realize that the relationship between Apple and Adobe have slowly but surely switched from an undercovered to an opened conflict. This is especially true after the recent comments made by Steve Jobs during the introduction of the iPad, when he said that Adobe engineers were too lazy and that HTML 5 will take over Flash; clearly pouring oil onto the already burning fire. In summary, Apple made it clear that Flash will never exist as such on the iPhone nor the iPad.
However, if we look back over the last decade, relationship between Apple and Adobe have also been tagged with some dark periods. It probably starts when Apple launched its movie/video edition suite, Final Cut Pro that killed Première on Mac OS X in a record time. Marktanteil der Smartphones steigt weiter an
Die Marktforscher von IDC haben Studienergebnisse veröffentlicht, wonach im vergangen Jahr rund 174 Millionen Mobiltelefone ausgeliefert wurden. Allein im letzten Quartal 2009 konnten 54 Millionen Geräte verkauft werden, was im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal einer Steigerung um 39 Prozent entspricht. Einkaufsbummel von der Couch: Google Street Views demnächst mit Blick in Verkaufsregale
Searchengineland hat Google Beauftragte wohl dabei erwischt wie sie in einem New Yorker Shop (Oh Nuts) Bilder für ein neues Produkt gesammelt haben. Shop Views. Oder wie immer es heissen wird. Die Idee: von Street Views aus (auch das hierzulande noch schwer von Datenschützern umkämpft und längst nicht zu Ende fotografiert) direkt in den Laden um die Ecke clicken und schon mal sehen was sie so zu bieten haben. Klar, es wird nur Sekunden dauern bis jemand darauf kommt, dass Diebe so vielleicht auch die Positionen der Überwachungskameras sehen könnten und somit ihren Raubzug noch besser und vor allem bequemer von zu Hause aus planen können. Virtuelles Einkaufen könnte jedenfalls noch mal einen Dreh einfacher werden.

What's cooler than the latest in technology? How about the latest in self-powering technology? University of Pennsylvania researchers have put together what seems like the world's first photovoltaic circuit, which is to say that the electronic parts of your devices will no longer have to just consume energy, they'll be able to harvest it directly from the sun. The most obvious application for this would be in smartphone touchscreens, which could recharge themselves while you sip your latte at the local sun-drenched coffee shop. Siri might be a breakthrough app for iPhone. You ask the app a question and it hits a database and sends you back what it thinks you are looking for. It uses Dragon's engine for speech recognition (which is good) or you can just type the question in manually. Apple wants to kill Admob?
Coming on the heels of Apple's latest endeavor into the mobile ad space, Apple has posted a note to all iPhone OS developers telling them their apps will be rejected if they include location aware advertising and don't use Core Location for any other functionality on the app. If the app uses Core Location to find weather, restaurants, ATMs, etc, Apple will let the app through the App Store even if Admob is connected to location services. Many developers rely on Admob to make revenue on free applications, and Admob uses the user's location in order to provide ads.

According to Fudzilla, Intel announced a great news to their closest partners. The graphics chips which will be integrated into the future architecture Sandy Bridge planned for in one year will be twice as powerful as those currently installed in the processors Arrendale and Clarkdale. We do not know if Intel will make a real effort to modify their architecture or if they will be satisfied to benefit from their engraving in 32 nm and to increase the frequency significantly. At this rate, and if Intel continues to double the performances of its video solution every two years, one will be able to play Starcraft II in the native resolution of an Apple portable in ten years time.

DARPA-based Siri virtual assistant hits the App Store, smartphone sentience can't be far behind (video)
It's been well over six months since we first got wind of Siri, the DARPA-inspired smartphone app that pledged to take all the hassle out of well life. It's a virtual assistant that can take care of menial tasks, things like finding restaurants, hearing reviews, and even booking tables -- all with your voice. Remo Software intros new data-recovery utility
Remo Software has introduced a new data-restoration application, Remo Recover. The program is available as a Media or Pro edition, each with tools for recovering lost data from computers and external storage devices. The apps also support data retrieval from iPods, allowing users to send the restored files to various devices. Creaceed has released a new beta version of Elasty HD, its motion tracking and special effects application that was previously labeled Magnet 1.x. Elasty HD 2.0 is designed for video editing, with tools for distorting images and changing colors. DARPA job posting talks of developing an autonomous, grenade-wielding robot
DARPA's just put up a pretty interesting job posting if you're the wary-of-our-future-being-controlled-by-robots type, anyway. The call involves a new research and development program called ARM. Basically, DARPA's looking to build a robot that can use its arms to dexterously and autonomously grasp objects. Zune Pass hit by wave of disappearing music?
It's not exactly all that uncommon to see some music disappear from Zune Pass (or any other music service) due to rights issues and whatnot, but Microsoft's subscription service seems to have been hit with significantly more vanishing acts than usual as of late, which has resulted in a sizable number of complaints from users. So, Jeff Zucker of NBC was hanging out his new best friend Brian Roberts from Comcast today, talking up the proposed acquisition in front of Congress. A certain Rep. Microsoft refutes "clumsy" claim, points to end results

NBC says Hulu chose to block Boxee itself
NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker asserted at hearings today that Hulu, not NBC, was responsible for blocking Boxee from accessing its videos. When questioned about the move in justifying the Comcast NBC merger, Zucker said Hulu executives made the decision themselves since Boxee was "illegally" taking content from the streaming TV site without having agreed to a deal. Outside deals are acceptable with formal terms, he said.

Citrix will bring Windows 7 to the iPad
Here is a news that will delight or disgust people according to their inclination. Citrix announced on its blog that it will be soon possible, thanks to them, to work under Windows 7 from the iPad.
