Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
One of the conundrums facing device makers today is how to add wireless connectivity to their products. E-readers such as the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook use internet access primarily for selling you more content, so it can be completely subsidized. Laptops, on the other hand, can consume large amounts of data, and so plans can run $60 per month and have capped bandwidth, even at that price. Apple and AT&T's iPad pricing scheme attempts a compromise: a $15 prepaid for a minimal 250 MB per month that could serve the needs of many users (especially with a Flash-less browser and sideloaded video delivery), along with

Update for the Mac Pro 2009
Apple offers finally an update correcting the problems about which we spoke very recently on Mac Pro 2009. Coming in at 1,64 MB and is available via the software update, it should avoid transforming these Mac Pro into radiators whenever one plays a little song.

Motorola plans split into two by early 2011
Motorola today provided more a definitive timetable for its plan to split the company. Acting to correct rumors, the Droid creator said it will divide itself into two firms within the first quarter of 2011. The first will include the crucial Mobile Devices group as well as the Home section, which covers media hubs and similar end-to-end devices; the second company would incorporate Motorola's enterprise and networking fields.

Google search deal netting Apple over $100 million yearly?
Apple is being paid over $100 million per year in its search deal with Google, a source tells Silicon Alley Insider. A lesser-known fact of the companies' partnership is that Google shares a small amount of its search revenue with Apple as a result of being the default search engine on the iPhone. A $100 million sum is said to be relatively trivial for Apple, but enough that the company has no reason to invest in a search engine of its own.

Judge throws out Microsoft WGA spyware case
Windows Genuine Advantage software might be many things (annoying and by no means error-free, to name but two) but it ain't spyware -- at least according to a judge in the District Court for the Western District of Washington, who dismissed the lawsuit that we first caught wind of back in '06. The news comes a month after the plaintiffs failed to have the suit certified as a class action, which is never a good sign -- and which bears out Microsoft's assertion that the case is "fictional" and from an "alternate universe." Creative takes orders for World of Warcraft headset
Creative on Thursday announced it will begin offering the Sound Blaster World of Warcraft Wireless Headset for pre-orders on Friday. The special edition headset, as suggested, is themed around Blizzard's online RPG. RealNetworks to spin off Rhapsody, give up control
Seems like times are tough in the streaming music game -- Warner is making noise about dropping free streaming rights to its catalog, and now RealNetworks and Viacom have announced plans to spin off the Rhapsody subscription service. The new company will obviously be known as Rhapsody, and both Real and Viacom will hold a sub-50 percent stake in the outfit and remain on the board of directors. Real's also contributing $18m in cash to the cause, while Viacom's committed to providing $33m in advertising -- we'll see if Rhapsody can make it on its own once that all runs out.

Briefly: Hydra HDR goes 64-bit, MagicPrefs for Magic Mouse
Creaceed has announced the release of an update to its Aperture HDR plug-in, Hydra. With the tool, users can combine a series of images depicting the same scene, into one high dynamic range image. The v2.1.4 update has added support for the 64-bit architecture introduced in the latest version of Aperture. With the inclusion of this support the plug-in can be used with Aperture 2.x, or Aperture 3.x. The update is free for all registered users or a new licence can be purchased for $80.

Motorola targets first quarter of 2011 for split into two
Ending a healthy spat of rumor and speculation, Motorola has confirmed today that it'll be splitting into two separate entities as of the first quarter of next year. The first of the two will form from the current Mobile Devices and Home businesses -- led by Sanjay Jha effective immediately -- with control of the phone business, set-top boxes, and "end-to-end video, voice and data solutions," while the other half will congeal out of the Enterprise Mobility and Networks divisions that are responsible for wireless infrastructure, two-way radios, public safety systems, and the like, and that will be led by Greg Brown (in other words, both businesses will retain their current leaders). The Apple Store ready to flower in France
France currently has only two Apple Stores, that at the Louvre and the other at Montpellier. One waits for spring the opening of the shop at the Opéra, but it will be far from being the only one. Mac4Ever tells us that Apple has started recruitment for a shop located at Nice, or rather on its outskirts, in the shopping mall Cap 3000 located at Saint Laurent in Var. A few days ago, Macgénération told us that Apple had an eye on Lyon which will have 2 of them of which one will be in the district of La Part-Dieu.To our knowledge, Apple always aimed to open 20 of these Apple shops in short-term in France (less than 2 years).

IBM brings Lotus Symphony 3.0, other titles to Mac, iPhone
IBM has launched three new Apple-related enterprise products, beginning with a beta Mac version of Lotus Symphony 3.0. The software is a free work suite, based around the architecture of OpenOffice 3. Programs for spreadsheets, presentations and text documents are included, and IBM notes that the suite supports "most" features of Microsoft Office.

Debunk: Palm not halting Pre / Pixi production, just on hold for Chinese New Year
Oh boy. Research firm OTR Global is making some waves today with a report claiming that Palm ordered all Pre and Pixi manufacturing to be halted, but apparently they didn't look at a calendar -- or, you know, call Palm. We just talked to Palm and here's the real deal: Pre and Pixi orders were halted for the Chinese New Year on the 14th, and production will go back online at the end of the month. That's the whole story -- Palm said that production for Verizon was ramped up early in the year to cover the downtime, so there shouldn't be any effect on availability. We'll be getting an official statement soon, we'll update as soon as we get it.

Palm freezing all Pre, Pixi shipments?
Palm has shut down all production of its phone lineup, OTR Global said today in a report. Three contacts in Taiwan's device supply chain claim that Palm has asked Foxconn and Compal without warning to shut down production of the Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi and Pixi Plus for at least the rest of the month. A chance exists that the Pixi Plus will continue to ship but that there may be as few as 5,000 units reaching Verizon this month.

HTC Legend breaks cover on KPN's site for March launch
We've little doubt at this point that HTC's Legend is definitely real and likely coming to a shop near you, but now we've got what seems to be the first official confirmation by a company that would have authority on the matter. MacSpeech ships Scribe, Scribe Dictate add-ons
Developer MacSpeech has launched Scribe, a new transcription program. The app takes audio files and translates them into text documents; some supported audio formats include AIFF, WAV, MP4 and M4A. Users must provide several minutes of training, but the software then recognizes up to six individuals, and 13 English dialects. Keio U, Toshiba show stamp-sized 1TB SSD prototype
Despite currently available Solid State Drives being smaller, more efficient and faster than standard, spinning hard drives, researchers in Japan are working on making them much smaller and even more energy efficient. Keio University in Tokyo and Toshiba have teamed up to produce a prototype SSD that is the size of a postage stamp but which has a 1TB capacity. The team, headed up by Professor Tadahiro Kuroda at the University, claims to have discovered a technology that can reduce the size of current SSDs by 90 percent while making them 70 percent more efficient.

Chrome for Mac gets extensions, bookmark sync
Google today launched a new beta of Chrome that gives Mac users the same new features that have surfaced in the stable Windows version. Extensions are the highlight and can either add new features, such as a dictionary or site script, as well as simplify tasks within the browser itself. Lenovo's AMD-based G455 and G555 make thrifty Stateside debut
China may have gotten its hands on the G455A model a touch earlier, but Lenovo hasn't kept its US-based loyalists waiting too long, as today it's announcing the forthcoming availability of a pair of new additions to its G series. Sadly, the Chinese vendor hasn't furnished us with spec sheets as yet, though we can be safe in assuming the G455 and G555 will differ primarily in their screen sizes (14 versus 15 inches), and with 16:9 screen ratios advertised, they're also likely to share the 1366 x 768 resolution of the Chinese G455A. Microsoft has formally unveiled Office for Mac 2011, the next version of its work suite. The software makes a variety of major changes, for instance incorporating the ribbon interface now standard in Windows versions of Office. On the Mac however the interface should still incorporate elements of the Office 2008 Elements Gallery, as well as the traditional Mac menu and the Standard Toolbar. Adobe claims 7 million attempted Flash downloads via iPhone
Millions of people have unsuccessfully tried to download Flash Player for the iPhone and iPod touch, claims an Adobe PR person, Mark Doherty. The company recently posted a warning at the Flash Player download site, which informs iPhone OS users that Apple has restricted the technologies needed to make Flash work on their hardware. Doherty notes that by December 2009, as many as 7 million iPhone users had tried to download Flash. Figures had reached 3 million by June of that year.

Today at Macworld, HP released its latest multifunction printer for small- and medium-sized businesses, the Officejet 4500. The Officejet 4500 provides 6ppm laser printing for text, 1m200 dpi optical scanning, fax and copy functions. The Officejet 4500 has both typical USB 2.0 as well as 10/100 Ethernet to print over the network. Filme für nur einen Dollar?
Der Verkauf von Fernsehinhalten via iPad soll offenbar etwas gepusht werden. Laut der Zeitschrift “Financial Times” will Apple einzelne Sendungen bereits ab einem US-Dollar anbieten und so für User die Hemmschwelle senken Inhalte käuflich zu erwerben.

Volvo shows rear seat media PC with 4G, iPod input
Volvo at the Chicago Auto show this morning said it would give its XC70 crossover wagon a unique rear seat entertainment system. The RSEi-500 will be a full-fledged touchscreen computer based on Windows XP but will have its own custom interface for media navigation, including cover art and details for music and DVDs. It should also have an always-on Internet connection and will uniquely run on a Sprint Overdrive that can share a 3G or WiMAX connection over to both the RSEi-500 and to other devices in the car through Wi-Fi.

Paper echoes talk of $1 TV shows for iPad's debut

Japan's Keio University claims to have developed, in conjunction with Toshiba, the technology to shrink the size of SSDs by a spectacular 90 percent while also cutting energy consumption by 70 percent. Das mobile Internet erobert dank neuer Geräte, günstiger Datentarife und attraktiver Anwendungen den Massenmarkt. Der Absatz von Smartphones wird in Deutschland im Jahr 2010 um 47 Prozent auf 8,2 Millionen Stück zulegen. Damit wird 2010 jedes dritte neue Mobiltelefon hierorts ein Smartphone sein, 2009 war es erst jedes fünfte. Der Umsatz mit den vielseitigen Multimedia-Handys steigt 2010 voraussichtlich um 33 Prozent auf 1,5 Milliarden Euro. Das berichtet der Hightech-Verband BITKOM auf Basis aktueller Daten des European Information Technology Observatory (EITO). Alcatel-Lucent schreibt im vierten Quartal wieder schwarze Zahlen
Alcatel-Lucent ist im vierten Quartal 2009 in die Gewinnzone zurückgekehrt. Laut der heute veröffentlichten Bilanz erwirtschaftete der französisch-amerikanische Telekomausrüster einen Nettogewinn von 46 Millionen Euro oder 0,02 Euro je Aktie. Im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres hatte er aufgrund hoher Abschreibungen noch einen Verlust von 3,892 Milliarden Euro oder 1,72 Euro je Aktie erzielt. Im Vorquartal belief sich der Fehlbetrag auf 182 Millionen Euro oder 0,08 Euro pro Anteilsschein.

Weitere Hinweise zur Auflösung der iPhone-Exklusivität in Deutschland
Im vergangenen Jahr entstanden erstmals Gerüchte, dass Apples Exklusivpartnerschaft mit T-Mobile im Jahr 2010 vor dem Aus steht. Pressesprecher des rosa Riesen dementierten diese Vorwürfe souverän und verwiesen darauf, dass diese exklusive Partnerschaft auch im Jahr 2010 anhalten wird. Auch in Amerika spekulierte man, ob zur iPad-Enthüllung auch die Auflösung der iPhone-Exklusivität in Amerika zwischen Apple und AT&T bevor stehen würde. Bestätigt hat sich diese Vermutung nicht.

Das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) weist darauf hin, dass der 11. Februar (jeden Jahres) europaweit der "Tag des Notrufs" ist. An diesem Tag soll die Bevölkerung auf die europäische Notrufnummer 112 aufmerksam gemacht werden. Über die Nummer 112 können mittlerweile in allen EU-Staaten Notrufe kostenlos sowohl von Festnetzanschlüssen als auch von Mobiltelefonen abgesetzt werden. Mobilfunknutzer in Deutschland können seit Mitte 2009 auch dann einen Notruf absetzen, wenn das eigene Mobilfunknetz nicht verfügbar ist. In diesem Fall wird der Notruf automatisch über ein fremdes verfügbares Mobilfunknetz abgesetzt.
Dies ermöglichen die Vorgaben der vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie erarbeiteten Verordnung über Notrufverbindungen, die am 18. März 2009 in Kraft getreten ist

Here, finally, is one point on which the two giants of computing, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, completely disagree on. Steve says netbooks are better at nothing, whereas Bill's view is the polar opposite:

Daten in sozialen Netzwerken sind sensibel und gehören geschützt. Betreiber müssen dafür Einstellungsmöglichkeiten bieten und Nutzer müssen verantwortungsvoll entscheiden. BVV: Blu-ray-Discs verzeichnen enormes Umsatzwachstum in Deutschland
Die Enthüllung des Apple iPad liegt nun knapp zwei Wochen zurück. Youtube hat einen Filter für Inhalte eingeführt, die für Kinder und Jugendliche ungeeignet sind. Apple TV-Update verbessert deutsche Lokalisierung
Wer Apples "iPod für den Fernseher" Apple TV mit deutschen Spracheinstellungen betreibt darf sich freuen: Das neu Verfügbare Update auf Version 3.0.2 korrigiert diverse, teils peinliche Lokalisierungsfehler und ergänzt die deutsche Sprachversion um bislang noch fehlende übersetzte Texte.
Zudem gibt es Anwenderberichte darüber, dass mit diesem Update ein Problem mit der Erkennung des HDMI-Eingangssignals behoben sei (schwarzer Bildschirm bis zum Neustart). Nach unserer Erfahrung wurde dies jedoch bereits mit der letzten Aktualisierung korrigiert, allerdings war es teilweise nötig, das Gerät komplett zurückzusetzen.

At the latest count, the DVD is very far from being supplanted by Blu-ray, since the Blu-ray progresses only very slowly. There is however a field where Blu-ray has passed in front. Intel to Release Only Limited Amount of Hexa Core Xeon
The closer we get to the release date of the Intel Nehalem Hexa Core Xeon, the more we get information and details. This is really new series of Xeon CPU and is not intended to replace the current Quad Core Xeon. It should rather be considered as the "Extreme" or "Premium" model. Intel does not plan to drop the Quad Core Xeon CPUs and will offer both Quad and HExa Core Xeon units on its catalog, similarly to the Dual and Quad Core units in 2007-2008. Those new Hexa Core Xeon will only be available in limited amount. As we reported it earlier, the Core i7-980X will be the first model available in March. Clocked at 3.33 GHz, with 12 MB of cache and a TurboBoost mode to 3.6 GHz, it will support 12 threads. Google to Become a US ISP
Google was already an internet provider for some airports and locations with free Wi-Fi hotspots, but so far this activity was more for its image than for a real business. Things might change following today's announcement. Google will offer internet access bi optical fiber to a limit set of US customers (from 50,000 to 500,000): 1 Gbits/s at a very competitive price.This announcement demonstrates that Google does not plan to remain in a 100% virtual business model, and plans to bring some "solid" products, the Nexus or Android are 2 examples. Google will use its huge financial resources to support its future development. The iPad needs to be more like the Tablet PC to be successful, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates argues in an interview today. Kenneth Li from the Financial Times reports that Apple may have convinced some of the TV networks to lower their price on TV shows from $1.99 to $.99 per episode.

The N900's well on its way to developing a solid reputation as a hacker's dream, but here's the thing: hackers need a way to charge their device. Actually, we all do, which makes a trending problem with N900s in the field particularly worrisome. It seems that the micro-USB connector's surface mount design is causing it to become misaligned or disconnected completely, and affected users seem to be having mixed results getting the issue covered under warranty. Apple to sell TV shows for $1 at iPad launch?
Apple could surprise iPad buyers by halving the price of TV shows on iTunes by the time the tablet is in stores, a leak hinted Wednesday night. A number of unnamed studios have supposedly agreed to repeated calls from Apple to cut the price per episode to $1 in a "test" that would gauge interest in lower-priced standard definition shows. The drop would hopefully result in disproportionately higher sales by attracting those otherwise scared off by the normal $2 price tag.

Apple makes an effort to injure Macworld Expo ?
Yesterday, the first Macworld Expo opened in San Francisco without Apple. The absence of Apple is already largely felt, at least at the media level. Up to now, Macworld was an major event, it was entitled to practically any cover, except that of indifference. In itself, the absence of Apple is already an enormous punishment for its organizer, IDG. It was more than difficult for them to convince exhibitors to come, and similarly convincing people to attend the conferences, especially since the entry ticket was nearly $1000. The departure of Apple has not happened without argument between the two historical partners, and according to rumours Apple still has enormously resentment towards IDG.
