China: Google verzögert Android-Smartphones
Motorola und Samsung sind von Google gebeten worden, die Veröffentlichung je eines Smartphones mit dem Google-Betriebssystem Android bis auf Weiteres zu verschieben. Dies sei nötig, um zunächst die Zukunft Googles auf dem chinesischen Markt zu klären. Das Unternehmen zieht sogar einen Rückzug aus China in Erwägung.

ALK released free CoPilot Live navigation app for iPhone
ALK Technologies has announced that its CoPilot Live Directions app is now available on the App Store as a 30-day free trial. The iPhone utility provides full navigation capabilities, including turn-by-turn instructions and voice guidance. Map data is stored locally on the handset, rather than constantly requiring a network connection when traveling.

Briefly: Mac developers come together to support Haiti
A large number of Mac developers are banding together to help raise money to support Haiti. On the January 20th, these developers will collect proceeds from the profits of some of their applications and donate it to several charities working in Haiti. In total, more than 125 companies are participating in the Indie+Relief event, offering up the profits from over 200 Mac and iPhone applications. Apple tries to wrestle iPad trademark away from Fujitsu
Apple is actively working to take the American "iPad" trademark away from Fujitsu, unearthed documents show. It was recently discovered that Apple has filed for the iPad name in Canada, Europe and Hong Kong, but that because of Fujitsu, the company cannot do so in the US. The Fujitsu iPAD is already a tangible product, a handheld device used by retail workers.

T-Mobile's Fender edition myTouch 3G now available for $180
We'd already heard that T-Mobile's new Fender edition myTouch 3G would be rolling out on January 20th, but we hadn't had much indication about what sort of premium (if any) it would demand over the standard myTouch. Well, as you can see above, you will have to pay an extra $30 on top of the $150 the regular myTouch 3G currently demands (on-contract, naturally), but that will get you a bundled 16GB memory card, not to mention a genuine 3.5mm headphone jack, a few pre-loaded songs from Eric Clapton and others and, of course, that classy woodgrain finish. AT&T readying for unnamed "heavy data" devices
AT&T is readying its network for an upgrade to handle devices it can't even announce yet, a tentative rumor would indicate today. The US carrier has purportedly been holding individual meetings with regional managers to ensure the network can support unnamed devices, including hardware that will require "heavy data." The BGR contact doesn't have any insight into the products in question.

Palm suddenly means business with games, heading to GDC this year
That was a quick turnaround, wasn't it? Palm wasted no time in retailing 3D games that are as visually engaging as the best the iPhone has to offer just as soon as it made the big announcement back at CES, and now it's taking things to the next level by heading out to GDC in San Francisco this March. The Game Developers Conference is -- as gaming goes, anyway -- what you'd call a Big Deal, so the fact that Palm is leading a session there to educate interested parties in its Plug-in Development Kit is a promising sign that these guys are taking the concept of webOS as an entertainment platform very, very seriously. Sega plans full virtual console app for iPhone
Sega will soon release a proper virtual console for the iPhone and iPod touch, reports say. Called Ultimate Genesis, the platform will take the form of an app, allowing in-app downloads of a number of games originally made for the defunct Sega Genesis console. While Space Harrier II will be included for free, other titles should cost varying amounts of money. Sonic the Hedgehog will cost $6, for instance, while Golden Axe will be $5, and Shining Force and Ecco the Dolphin will be $3 apiece.

More alleged photos of Apple tablet's glass appear
A second leak in as many weeks has purported photos of Apple's tablet. While similar to a previous shot of the device's glass, two new images have now surfaced that put the size in context. Both are consistent and show the glass itself being roughly as long as a MacBook Pro's keyboard tray end-to-end, or enough to theoretically house a 10-inch diagonal screen.

Possible Bing deal could backfire for Apple, say analysts
It would be a serious mistake for Apple to contemplate switching to Bing as the default search service on the iPhone, say Oppenheimer analysts. News emerged today that Apple may be in talks with Microsoft, looking to make the switch as a means of distancing itself from Google. Google has its own phone platform, Android, and still earns money from the ads displayed in iPhone search results.

Stantum multitouch Slate PC prototype hands-on
We've had a few run-ins with Stantum before, and never came away less than impressed. This time they sent us their Slate PC concept, which is actually a hacked-up Dell mini 10. The 10-inches of real estate don't seem to hamper Stantum's multitouch, ultra-sensitive and pressure-simulating resistive touchscreen technology one bit. Unfortunately, with stock Windows 7 on here we're not sure this makes much more of a compelling use-case for a "slate" computer than we've seen already littering the halls of CES. AT&T prepping network for "Unannounced device?"
BGR has another vague one today about how AT&T's busybodies are scrambling to upgrade their network to meet the demand of some new, data-hungry device. Obviously they are looking at Apple's event next week.

Quanta working on 3.5-inch smartbook-as-phone, hates our thumbs
Without pictures or firm form factor details, it's hard to tell exactly what Quanta is driving at here (or who it's driving at it for), but the concept of a "computer in an iPhone form factor," as Quanta Chairman Barry Lam so tactfully puts it, doesn't fill us with much hope for usability. At least it probably won't look as terrifying as this modded Dell netbook pictured above. Quanta says it's building a "smartbook" device with a 3.5-inch touchscreen, with voice calling and web browsing the primary functionalities. Verizon cuts Internet for repeat media pirates
Verizon today admitted that it has disconnected some users whose connections have repeatedly been seen carrying pirated material. The provider's spokeswoman, Bobbi Henson, wouldn't say how many or after how many notices but said Verizon has "cut some people off" in small numbers. It had already been sending notices on a wider level since April and for the RIAA in particular since November.

Wie beim iPhone: Apple-Tablet anfangs nur in USA?
Kaum jemand zweifelt noch daran, dass Apple-Boss Steve Jobs nächsten Mittwoch höchstpersönlich einen Tablet-Computer als Apples neueste Kreation vorstellt. Über die Details jedoch ist bis auf eine Menge mehr oder weniger realistischer Spekulationen weiterhin so gut wie nichts bekannt. Allerdings häufen sich in den letzten Tagen die Hinweise darauf, dass Apple das neue Gerät zum Verkaufsstart nur in den USA anbieten wird. Déjà-vu? Genau, beim iPhone war es 2007 genauso.
Auf Basis dessen, was aktuell vom Apple-Tablet erwartet wird, sprechen zwei gewichtige Gründe für diese Strategie:
1. Apple muss wie bereits beim iPhone einen verlässlichen Partner auf Providerseite finden, der nicht nur attraktive Konditionen, sondern auch die passende Infrastruktur anbieten kann: Zumindest gerüchteweise soll das Tablet ja per UMTS-Flatrate jederzeit mit dem Internet verbunden sein.
2. Fast noch schwieriger: Inhalte. Wenn wir davon ausgehen, dass das Tablet auch als Magazin- oder E-Book-Reader zu

US regional carrier Cellular South today quit the phone industry's CTIA group over claims of unfair bias in its treatment. News: Officials raid counterfeit iPhone factory
Chinese officials have raided a counterfeit iPhone factory in Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen, China. According to a Shenzhen Daily report, 28 people have been taken into custody for questioning, and seven were arrested by police. The raid turned up more than 1,000 fake iPhones, which sell for 500 yuan (roughly $74) as opposed to more than 5,000 yuan for a real model, as well as 6,000 batteries. HTC Bravo gettin' overexposed in the wild?
As breathtakingly bad as the picture is, what we're looking at here could very well be the first shot of HTC's upcoming Bravo in the wild -- the industrial design lines up nicely with what we've seen in the company's leaked roadmap, anyway, and that funky little optical pad in the center perfectly matches the component that you can clearly see on the Legend render. Analyst: Google may sell just 1m Nexus Ones
Citigroup researcher Mark Mahaney today estimated that Google may ship only a small number of Nexus One smartphones in 2010. The analyst expects as little as 1 million and as many as 3 million, and notes that it should have relatively little financial impact on the company, generating between $500 million and $1.6 billion. As Google is trying to stimulate sales by running low margins, each million units moved could actually cost it 1 percent of margin across the entire company.

TruTouch 2000 promises to detect intoxication with a finger scan
TruTouch Technologies has been working on various non-invasive means to detect intoxication for quite a while now (like the rather elaborate TruTouch Guardian pictured at right), but it looks like it's set to simplify things even further with its new TruTouch 2000 device, which has apparently passed though clinical tests with flying colors. Like the Guardian, the TruTouch 2000 uses near infrared light to detect possible intoxication, but it's apparently able to do that by simply scanning your finger instead of your entire forearm. 3 Scandinavia rolling out 84Mbps HSPA+ 3G
Wireless network operator 3 and Ericsson on Wednesday said they would introduce the first 84Mbps HSPA+ 3G wireless network in the world. The rollout will cover Denmark and four major Swedish cities. Gerade werden die Space Shuttles verkauft und man könnte sich so langsam Sorgen um die NASA machen, aber die hat schon wieder was Neues auf Tasche: Puffin, ein ultraleises Elektroflugzeug für eine Person. Das Teil ist ein VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) Flugzeug, braucht also keine Startbahn und soll bis zu 480 km/h schnell fliegen und auch in der Luft stehen können. Apple in publisher talks; Kindle changes book revenue model
Apple is currently in negotiations with "nearly all (and most likely all) of the six largest trade publishers," says Publishers Marketplace. Representatives are said to be meeting in New York this week, specifically to discuss arrangements for e-books published on an Apple tablet. Motorola launching 20-30 Android phones in 2010
Some interesting tidbits came out of Motorola's DEXT launch in Singapore today -- CNET Asia had a chance to sit down with Moto's Asia Pacific VP Spiro Nikolakopoulos, who said that the company would launch between 20 to 30 Android phones globally in 2010. Jim Goldman got a little bit of feedback on the Bing search for Mobile Safari story we discussed yesterday. Of the three points, one struck us as pretty significant.

That doesn't bode well for the Apple/Google relationship. Perhaps there was some tension caused by the Admob deal? ChromeOS? Android on AT&T? Google Latitude? Google Voice? Chrome passing Safari? …see what we're getting at here?

Wi-Fire long-range WiFi adapater gets updated Mac software
We didn't run into too many problems with the existing Mac software for the Wi-Fire WiFi range extender in our brief time with the device, but it looks like hField Technologies has decided to make Mac users' lives a bit easier nonetheless, with it now releasing an updated version for OS X. Among other things, version 2.0 now finally includes an icon that sits in the menu bar for easy access, and fully revamped connection manager that sports a decidedly more Apple-like appearance. Unfortunately, you'll still have to wait a bit for an 802.11n upgrade, but the software update is at least free, and available to download right now.

We've heard this before, but with AT&T announcing both Android and Palm Pres earlier this month, it just might be time for Apple to announce a Verizon iPhone. According to Canaccord Adams' Peter Misek (via Apple 2.0), there is a "good chance" that Steve Jobs' one more thing will be the announcement of iPhone OS 4.0 and a Verizon iPhone. Boxee preps system for paid content
Boxee on Wednesday revealed that it will implement a payment system for content through both its software front-end and the Boxee Box. The Payment Platform will give creators of apps, videos and whole channels the option to charge for some or all of their titles. Claim: AT&T's network upgrades $5b short
TownHall analyst Gerard Hallaren late Tuesday chastised AT&T for what he sees as underfunding its network. In his research, he notes that AT&T has spent the least per subscriber of the three carriers to upgrade its network. AT&T has committed just $308 per person to capacity and speed updates where Verizon has spent $353; even Sprint, which has less than half the subscribers, has spent slightly more at $310 each.

Analysts name tablet suppliers, call for Verizon iPhone
Two analysts have issued new memos on upcoming Apple technology. UBS' Maynard Um addresses the tablet, saying that a January 27th press event will likely signal the product's announcement. Checks are said to indicate probable manufacturers and suppliers, namely Hon Hai (a.k.a. Foxconn), who may be assembling the device. The display may come from LG Display, with AUO being a possible secondary supplier.

Lockheed Martin puts out extra-secure USB drive
Lockheed Martin and IronKey have teamed up to create a new, ultra-secure USB drive called IronClad. The boot drive contains an operating system, programs and files, allowing users to plug it into any host PC and have access to their own desktop and files. There is no real need to access the host computer's hard drive, and the IronClad USB drive has 256-bit hardware-level encryption for protection from malware threats, including with rootkits.

Here's a slick little item you might be interested in, if your county of residence happens to subscribe to the DVB-T TV standard. Energy Sistem's just unleashed its TV2090 PMP for the world to enjoy. This attractive yet seemingly quite cumbersome looker boasts a 9-inch LCD, a stereo speaker and AV output, and it supports DivX, Xvid, AVI, MPG and MP3 / WAV playback. Now like we said, the whole unit is rather large -- measuring 265 x 32 x 155 mm -- and while we don't have an exact weight for it, we'd guess it to be large enough to be pretty annoying. Regardless, if you're in the market for a giant PMP, this one will be released in Europe in March for around €133 (or $187, if you're keeping track).

Research reveals why publishers want an Apple tablet
Kids today, eh? Well, it seems today’s youth truly are ‘digital natives’, spending around 53 hours each week accessing electronic media - that’s everything from computer games, iPods, phones and more.
A Kaiser Family Foundation survey of 2,002 people aged 8 to 18 reveal that young people spend seven hours and 38 minutes using media in a typical day - up from six hours and 19 minutes ten years ago.
Electronic media is now "a part of the air that kids breathe," says Vicky Rideout, director of Kaiser's Program for the Study of Media and Health. "Anything that takes up this much time, we really do need to think about it and talk about it."

NYC: Apple in 11th hour 'tablet' meetings with leading US book publishers
Apple negotiators are in New York this week for a series of eleventh hour “secret” iSlate-related meetings with leading US book publishers, reports The Bookseller.
The report suggests publishers are attempting to ensure greater control over pricing and supply of digital material. The reports follow the Wall Street Journal report yesterday which named HarperCollins US as one of the parties in the negotiations.
Publishers are seeking an "agency model" with Apple, whereby they control access to the digital file and the price it is sold at. It seems all of the six largest US publishers are involved in these discussions.

Fresh clues to why AT&T hasn't enabled iPhone for VoIP
Two reports this morning may tell us why Apple and AT&T have so far failed to enable VoIP calls across the carrier’s 3G network - suggesting the delay’s a reflection of AT&T’s network need.
After all, visitors to this year’s NAMM show noted problems with that same network - what would happen if there was even more traffic (attempting) to take place?

Amazon offers publishers new 70% Kindle deal as Apple tablet threat looms
No sooner do we report Apple to be engaged in tablet-related New York meetings with major US book publishers this week than a small and potentially related move by Amazon caught our eye.
Amazon has changed its Kindle book distribution deal, offering publishers 70 percent royalties (from June 30).
That’s the same deal offered by Apple to developers selling Apps via iTunes - which we recall is also the deal the company was reportedly offering book publishers.
Until now. Amazon has offered a 35 percent royalty to publishers and authors.

Tablet insiders speculate what's inside Apple's 'iSlate'...
Alright - we don’t know for sure but there’s been numerous conjectures revealed by analysts overnight which may shed a little illumination on the matter - looks like Samsung, ARM and Wintek may be winners in the new deal.
Ashok Kumar of NorthEast Securities in a note to his clients outlined some details. Kumar said that Apple could “ship up to a 1 million units by March and plateau at 400,000-500,000 units per month thereafter.”
The tablet will cost between $600 to $800, the analyst predicts. It will come with a docking station compatible with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse; also wireless connectivity supplied by a carrier partner, “most likely Verizon”.

After the commercial, hear the story of a guy who was filming a documentary in Haiti but was trapped after the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince collapsed around him.

Government killing off LORAN-C navigation system, deems GPS good enough

It helped bombers and ships across the Atlantic in WWII and, since then, has served as a reliable system for helping sailors, domestic and otherwise, to find their position. Apple has been talking to Qualcomm and Verizon for its devices, new rumors assert today. In discussing NorthEast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar's beliefs about what the tablet will include, GigaOM's founder Om Malik understands that Apple has been collaborating with Qualcomm and Verizon for future devices. Apple bringt offiziell Boot Camp-Support für Windows 7, iMac 27-Zoll hat Probleme

Lange hat es gedauert, aber nun hat Apple tatsächlich die Boot Camp-Treiber auf 3.1 aktualisiert und unterstützt jetzt auch offiziell die Windows 7-Versionen in 32 und 64 Bit. Die Probleme mit dem Trackpad und der Magic Mouse und Apples drahtloser Tastatur sollen auch der Vergangenheit angehören. He used a medical app saved on his phone to treat a leg injury, the light from his iPhone to show him his injuries and diagnosed it properly as a broken foot. Apple in talks to make Bing default iPhone search?
Apple is negotiating with Microsoft to replace the default search engine in the iPhone OS, two anonymous sources say. Discussions have been in progress for weeks, according to claims, and would potentially see Google swapped in favor of Bing. The positioning is an important one, as most mobile advertising is now viewed on iPhones and iPods, and people are more likely to use the default search option. Tablet insiders speculate what's inside Apple's 'iSlate'...
Alright - we don’t know for sure but there’s been numerous conjectures revealed by analysts overnight which may shed a little illumination on the matter - looks like Samsung, ARM and Wintek may be wnners in the new deal.
Ashok Kumar of NorthEast Securities in a note to his clients outlined some details. Kumar said that Apple could “ship up to a 1 million units by March and plateau at 400,000-500,000 units per month thereafter.”
The tablet will cost between $600 to $800, the analyst predicts. It will come with a docking station compatible with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse; also wireless connectivity supplied by a carrier partner, “most likely Verizon”.

Amazon offers publishers new 70% Kindle deal as Apple tablet threat looms
No sooner do we report Apple to be engaged in tablet-related New York meetings with major US book publishers this week than a small and potentially related move by Amazon caught our eye.
Amazon has changed its Kindle book distribution deal, offering publishers 70 percent royalties (from June 30).
That’s the same deal offered by Apple to developers selling Apps via iTunes - which we recall is also the deal the company was reportedly offering book publishers.

Amazon today took a preemptive move against Apple's rumored tablet by giving some publishers of Kindle e-books a larger cut of their sales. IBM übertrifft Erwartungen von Analysten im vierten Quartal
IBM hat im vierten Quartal einen Nettogewinn 4,8 Milliarden Dollar oder 3,59 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet, zehn Prozent mehr als im Vorjahresquartal. Der Umsatz stieg um ein Prozent auf 27,2 Milliarden Dollar. Das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) ergänzt seine Empfehlung, von Internet Explorer auf andere Webbrowser auszuweichen. Von der Schwachstelle, die auf einem Fehler in der Microsoft HTML-Bibliothek mshtml.dll beruht, sind weitere Microsoft-Anwendungen betroffen: Outlook (bis einschließlich Outlook 2003), Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Hilfesystem und Sidebar. NYC: Apple in 11th hour 'tablet' meetings with leading US book publishers
Apple negotiators are in New York this week for a series of eleventh hour “secret” iSlate-related meetings with leading US book publishers, reports The Bookseller.
The report suggests publishers are attempting to ensure greater control over pricing and supply of digital material. The reports follow the Wall Street Journal report yesterday which named HarperCollins US as one of the parties in the negotiations.
Publishers are seeking an "agency model" with Apple, whereby they control access to the digital file and the price it is sold at. It seems all of the six largest US publishers are involved in these discussions.

Research reveals three-in-four US kids own an iPod
Kids today, eh? Well, it seems today’s youth truly are ‘digital natives’, spending around 53 hours each week accessing electronic media - that’s everything from computer games, iPods, phones and more.
A Kaiser Family Foundation survey of 2,002 people aged 8 to 18 reveal that young people spend seven hours and 38 minutes using media in a typical day - up from six hours and 19 minutes ten years ago.
Electronic media is now "a part of the air that kids breathe," says Vicky Rideout, director of Kaiser's Program for the Study of Media and Health. "Anything that takes up this much time, we really do need to think about it and talk about it."
The research reveals some statistics which could explain publishing’s move to embrace the Apple tablet:

Geht los: Rock Band Network für Xbox 360

Rock-Band-User, die gerne selber Musik machen, haben demnächst die Chance, ihre eigenen Tracks mit dem Rest der Welt zu teilen. Über das Rock Band Network sollen selber eingespielte Spuren zukünftig hochgeladen werden. Angeschlossenes Features: ein Voting-System. Wer gut abschneidet mit seinen Eigenkreationen soll außerdem die Chance haben, die Sounds gleich zu verlaufen. Zwischen 1 und 3 Dollar sollen die dann kosten. Look, Physical Computing can be a drain. Particularly when your Summa Cum Laude status is hinging on you acing the final. We're guessing that one Ryan Raffa managed to pull off a pretty decent grade, as his final project is nothing short of delectable. In a (presumably successful) attempt to wow onlookers and professors alike, Ryan cooked up an audio controller that utilized an ADXL 335 accelerometer (for motion sensing) and an Arduino board that communicates serially with Max MSP. Die restlichen Spezifikationen sind nicht sonderlich beeindruckend, sollten aber alle normalen Aufgaben problemlos bewältigen. Das Display ist 14,1" groß, der Prozessor ist ein Core 2 Duo, der, so viel ist schon sicher, auf jeden Fall schneller als mit 2GHz getaktet ist, bis zu 8GB RAM kann man in den Outdoor-Rechner packen und ein RAID-System für die zwei 500GB-Festplatten ist auch vorgesehen. Security Update 2010-001 und Boot Camp Update erschienen
Apple hat eine ganze Reihe an Softwareaktualisierungen veröffentlicht. Das 22 Megabyte grosse Security Update 2010-001 wird allen Benutzern von Leopard und Snow Leopard empfohlen. Ebenfalls veröffentlicht wurde ein Update für Bootcamp, welches die Kompatibilität zu Windows 7 herstellt. Samsung unveils SyncMasters with the 'world's highest' contrast ratio
We've harped about manufacturers constantly pushing nearly useless dynamic contrast numbers on us for so long that we half-expected this announcement to be about some phantom billion to one number. Well done Samsung, then, for focusing on the static (or real) contrast ratio of 3,000:1 on its sparkling new F2370H and F2380MX 23-inchers. These are certainly not the first panels to reach that plateau (check the Prad link below showing the Eizo EV2333 achieving 5,000:1 in testing), but let's not argue over PR semantics. Im vergangenen Dezember erfolgte Apples offizielle Ankündigung, ab 5.12. könne man auch in Frankfurt einen Apple Store besuchen, quasi in letzter Minute kam es dann aber noch zu Problemen und die Eröffnung wurde verschoben. Laut Apple stimmten noch einige Details am Store nicht, die erst ausgebessert werden mussten. Studie: iPhone hat noch die doppelten Android-Klickraten
Smaato Inc., Spezialist für mobile Werbung, stellte jetzt Mobile Advertising Metrics vor, die den Index für Klickraten (Click Through Rate, CTR) nach mobilen Betriebssystemen aufschlüsseln. Darüber hinaus zeigen die Smaato Metrics die "Fillrates" mobiler Werbevermarkter im weltweiten Vergleich und den USA. Die Metrics basieren auf 3 Milliarden Werbeanfragen aus dem Smaato-Netzwerk vom Dezember 2009. Ihnen zufolge sind Quattro Wireless (erst vor kurzen durch Apple erworben) und Millenial Media die Top Performer unter den mobilen Werbevermarktern in den USA. Gemäß den Smaato Metrics brachten es beide Netzwerke auf je 83% Fillrate im Smaato-Netzwerk

Frankfurter Apple Store öffnet am 23. Januar
Ein zweiter Anlauf soll nun zum Erfolg führen: Auf der Webseite zum Frankfurter Apple Store wird nun die Eröffnung für den 23. Januar angekündigt. Los gehen soll's in der Großen Bockenheimer Straße 30 am Samstag um 11 Uhr - vermutlich wieder mit Schlangestehen und T-Shirts für die ersten 1000 oder so Besucher. (Danke Patrick)
Ursprünglich sollte die Eröffnung ja bereits Anfang Dezember stattfinden, vermutlich technische Gründe führten dann dazu, dass der Termin kurzfristig abgesagt wurde.
Der erste deutsche Apple Store wurde letztes Jahr in der Münchener Rosenstraße eröffnet, Frankfurt ist nach Hamburg Alstertal nun die dritte Filiale hierzulande. Apple will sich mit den eigenen Stores vor allem im Beratungs- und Servicebereich deutlich von anderen Anbieter absetzen. According to Businessweek, Apple is in talks with Microsoft to drop Google search as the default on Mobile Safari on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The move would place Bing, Microsoft's recently rebranded search, at the top of the mobile browser. The reason would be twofold. One: Microsoft would offer more money for users who click on ads from search and two, because Google's Android is a much bigger threat to Apple's iPhone than anything Microsoft can muster.
Interestingly, Apple may also add Bing as an option in Desktop Safari as well, according to their sources. The deal, if finalized, may not

That curious little Microsoft search engine you shrugged off just a few months ago could become a mainstay in your daily routine if BusinessWeek's sources are correct. Sony PS3 Motion Controller delayed until 'fall 2010' globally
Last official word we had on the launch of Sony's PS3 Motion Controller was Spring 2010. However, we just received a press release from Sony Japan with a revised availability of "Fall 2010." The calendar push affects Japan, Asia, North America, and Europe. In the statement, Kaz Hirai avoids using the "d" word saying only that, "for the best experience, we have decided to launch the motion controller this fall, with ample lineup of compatible titles." Still no mention of Arc -- Sony is still calling it "Playstation 3 motion controller (tentative name)."

ProteMac Security Suite bundles NetMine firewall, Meter
ProteMac has introduced a security software package, ProteMac Security Suite, that is designed to protect against threats such as Trojans and network attacks. The package pairs two of the companyís security programs, NetMine and Meter. NetMine provides a firewall for Mac OS X, while Meter works as a network traffic logger that records all incoming and outgoing TCP/IP traffic and data. All information gathered from the programs can be viewed in daily, weekly or monthly formats.

hField releases Wi-Fire Connection Manager 2.0 for Mac
hField Technologies has released Wi-Fire Connection Manager 2.0, an update to the software utility that works with the company's Wi-Fire external antenna. LG's X300 ad strikes an amazingly familar tone
LG's X300 laptop may have largely avoided comparisons to a certain other thin-and-light when it was announced at CES earlier this month, but it looks like LG is intent on driving that point home regardless. Apple Adds Liquid Contact Indicators (Almost Everywhere)
With the release of the iPhone, Apple started to add Liquid Contact Indicators in most of its products. Today, they all have LCI, except the Mac Pro and the keyboard as indicated in a TechNotes.
Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI) have been added to specific locations on current Mac portables and desktop keyboards to help determine if systems have been exposed to liquid. Damage due to liquid exposure is not covered by the Apple one (1) year limited warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

Rumors about iPhone OS 4.0
It is now about 3 weeks that we stared to hear persistent and precise rumors about iPhone OS 4.0. According to some sources, its announcement could come along with the iSlate, illustrating the goal of Apple to offer a more unified mobile OS for its mobile devices. Boy Genius Report thinks to have reliable information about new features/functions brought by the new OS:
There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide.
Ability to run applications in the background and multitasking.
Several graphical and UI changes to improve navigation through the OS and pages of application.
This new OS 4.0 would leave the first iPhone EDGE on the side of the road.

Briefly: Developers to support Haiti, Two product releases
A large number of Mac developers are banding together to help raise money to support Haiti. On January 20th, the developers will collect proceeds from the profits generated by application sales and donate it to several charities working in Haiti. In total, more than 125 companies are participating in the Indie+Relief event, offering up the profits from over 200 Mac and iPhone applications. BatchOutput 3.6 adds automated preflighting of PDFs
Zevrix has released BatchOutput 3.6, an update to the company's InDesign companion plug-in. The program is designed to handle automatic printing and exporting of multiple InDesign documents in different formats. The new version adds a series of features and improvements, including automated preflighting of final PDFs with Acrobat Pro preflight droplets. Exportable formats now include TIFF, PNG, GIF, and BMP, among others.

EROS Shenzhen tablet has Atom, 2 hours of battery life and a $450 price tag
Our guess is that the EROS tablet got caught in customs on its way to join its tablet friends at CES. Poor kid. Regardless, the 10.1-inch 1366x768 resistive touchscreen device still deserves its time to in the sun. Powered by an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, it runs Windows 7 (we're hoping Home Premium since Starter doesn't support touch). It all sounds fairly good until you hear about its three-cell battery's abysmal hour and a half of run time. And we've also got to say that it looks pretty chunky in the pictures, but most Wintel tablets are. But hey, maybe HP and Microsoft will change all that with the Slate. But if the EROS has struck your fancy, it looks to only be available in China

3D maps demoed on Sony Ericsson X10, Snapdragon paying off
Ericsson Labs is showing off an API for navigating through a three-dimensional interpretation of the world based on real imagery powered by Saab spinoff (the defense firm, not the car company) C3 Technologies on Sony Ericsson's upcoming X10 -- and in a word, it's looking impressive. The buttons for controlling the action are a bit hokey, of course, but don't worry too much about that -- this is strictly a proof of concept, and the important thing is that no matter how much panning, tilting, and swooping through the cityscape the demo-giver does, video output stays above 30 frames per second. Wii Balance Board: decent for measuring equilibrium, medical study says
This one's pretty cute (or evidence of a completely uncreative healthcare industry). Researchers at the University of Melbourne and Singapore General Hospital's Department of Physiotherapy have run a battery of tests on the Wii's Balance Board, and found it to be somewhat useful in testing patient's balance and equilibrium, medically speaking. Current medical equipment used to test these skills is very expensive, heavy, and in short supply. The Balance Board, on the other hand, runs about $99. Quanta to develop smartbook the size of an iPhone
Quanta Computer, which supplies Apple and HP, will build a smartbook, according to a Tuesday report. The idea is for a "computer in an iPhone form factor," according to Quanta Chairman Barry Lam, who also added the company is seeking more strategic investments to keep making a profit. Sony Installs 4 SSDs in a Notebook
Sony just launched new series of Vaio Z, the high-end models, with impressive features:
2600x900 or 1600x1080 13.3" LED display
Intel Core i7-620M CPU
NVIDIA GT300 graphic card with native and transparent switching between integrated graphical chipset and the discrete GPU.
But the most impressive point is probably the 4 SSDs hosted in this notebook. 4 units of 32 or 64 GB are installed as RAID0 volume. To offer 4 SSDs in a 13.3" notebook of 1.4 kg, Sony is probably using specific SSDs. IT could be the mini PCI-Express found in some EEE PC, or 1.8" SSDs without any enclosure. With recent improvements, we can expect impressive performance levels, even though a RAID0 volume is maybe not the best solution for getting the best accession time.

As anyone who's seen the last Engadget Show knows, we were incredibly lucky to have Google's Erick Tseng as our guest. Erick is product manager of Android at Google, and he's one of the sharpest, brightest, funniest guys around -- it was great having him on the show, and I sincerely hope we see a lot more of him as time goes by.
