Pentax confirms Optio I-10, H90, and E90 budget-friendly shooters

With a couple of leaks to get our mouths watering, Pentax has at last confirmed its new trio of Optio cameras: the I-10 (pictured), H90, and E90. The SLR-inspired I-10 sports a 5x zoom, 12.1 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD and 720p / 30fps video capture. There's also optical image stabilization, smile capture, and face detection to round out the feature set -- not bad for a $300 camera. Meanwhile, the similarly classy, 80s-inspired H90 checks most of the same boxes (including HD video, 12.1 megapixel stills and 5x zoom) with a $180 pricetag -- we can only guess its sacrifices involve a downgraded lens, sensor or general sense of class. Finally,

Apple: Quartalszahlen & Tablet-Andeutung

The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we're really excited about."

"...and one more thing…Verizon"

The NYPost's sources say that Verizon will be a carrier of the tablet and may in fact be announced as an iPhone partner on Wednesday, though might not be available as a carrier until the exclusivity agreement ends in June. Apple is expected to name Verizon Wireless as one of its carriers with its anticipated unveiling of a new tablet device on Wednesday, sources told The Post. That means Apple head Steve Jobs will probably introduce a Verizon iPhone, ending AT&T's exclusive hold on the hot smartphone. "It's almost a certainty," said telecom consultant Dunston Almeida. "AT&T losing iPhone is the worst-kept secret on Wall Street. The only question is whether Apple announces a Verizon iPhone this week." They went on to add what everyone has known since forever: Apple has been "extremely frustrated" with AT&T

Samsung NC10 hacked to accommodate second mini PCI-e slot

Samsung's NC10 may be getting a tad long in the tooth in the world of netbooks, but it still has its share of fans out there, some of whom are intent on stretching the netbook to its limits. One such individual is Graeme of the SammyNetbook forums, who amazingly managed to add a second mini PCI-e slot to the netbook that he's used to add a Broadcom HD decoder card. Of course, that mod is somewhat eased by the fact that the NC10 actually has a space and the necessary wiring for a second slot, but Graeme still did have to put his soldering skills to use, a

A 46-inch LCD with some high-end, built-in speakers from Bang & Olufsen? Yeah, this one won't come cheap, but it will definitely make more of a statement in your living room than the average big-screen LCD. Of course, if this one does look a tad familiar, it's because this new BeoVisoin 10-46 is basically just a larger version of Bang & Olufsen's existing 40-inch BeoVision 10, which boasts the same brushed aluminum frame, 200Hz refresh rate, and LED backlight as it's new, larger counterpart. No official word on a price, but the 40-incher came in at just under $10,000, so you can draw your own conclusions. Unannounced BlackBerry Curve 8910 took CES refuge at Case-Mate's booth?

RIM has an interesting reputation in the trade show world: it rarely makes any announcements of interest or consequence during events, but if you look hard enough, you still might just find something juicy. Mac OS X 10.7: First Steps in October 2009

When digging into its stats, Macrumors identified Mac OS X 10.7 OS at the end of October. We retrospectively looked our own stats on Macbidouille/Hardmac, and could also indentify Mac OS X 10.7 Intel visitors. As one can relatively easily modify the tag on browsers, we dug deeper to identify the origin and location of such traffic. The result made us thinking that this was not hoax: IPs belonged to pool owned by Apple Computer Inc., and some of them to UCSD and Comcast. So, of course, Apple might create some Easter eggs on purpose, however, there is also nothing surprising of having engineers working on the next OS version 12 or 18 months prior its release.

We caught a glimpse of some new Pentax cams yesterday, and now the new Optio L-10, E-10, and two-tone H90 have leaked out in full. We still don't kow a ton about them, but the higher-res images mean we know some basic specs: the L-10 cops an old-school vibe and features a 5x zoom on top of a 12.1 megapixel sensor, the H90 also has a 5x zoom, and the E90 looks to be a little more basic with a 3x zoom and a 10.1 megapixel sensor. This gives the car more grip at the back, meaning it'll pop wheelies just like a real dragster -- though only when running on a road paved with gold. Wii Classic Controller Pro coming to confused, oversized US living rooms in April

That's right, yet another control mechanism, with its own set of slightly different buttons (this time dual shoulder buttons) and ergonomics (some DualShock-style grips) to thoroughly confuse and delight hapless Wii owners. Interestingly, the controller is making its debut in April as a bundle with Monster Hunter Tri; the game is compatible with the tried and true Wii Remote + Nunchuck combo and the hardly relevant Classic Controller, but we have a feeling those extra, Professional shoulder buttons will come in handy when plying the game mechanics of monster hunting.

Apple, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo compared at the macro level

We all love a good debate about how the tech giants of today are competing with each other, but rarely do we get a handy reference sheet like this to point people to. Nick Bilton of the New York Times has put together a segment-by-segment comparison between America's tech heavyweights, which does a fine job of pinpointing who competes with whom and where. We find the gaps in coverage more intriguing than the overlaps, though, with Microsoft's only unticked box -- mobile hardware -- raising habitual rumors of a Pink phone. Apple's a

Magnetic Tape Data: Future Looks Bright

With the recent increase of storage space of our 3.5" HD, many users were questioning the future of Magnetic tape as a long term storage device. Fujitsu and IBM have demoed a new linear magnetic tape technology allowing to reach a new world record: 29.5 billion bits per square inch with magnetic tape media developed using the barium-ferrite (BaFe)) particle. Employing its NANOCUBIC technology, Fujifilm succeeded in produce a media uniformly coated with dispersed BaFe particles. In summary, this support allows storage of 35 TB of uncompressed data, in other words 44x more than the amount of data hold on current cartridge. If this coating technology could be applied to 3.5" HD, we would then be able to get HD with storage space toping around 20 TB. So, there is still room for improvement, for sure 128 GB SSD looks then very small.

Newer announced the availability of a PCI Express 2.0 card bringing 2 eSATA III ports for the Mac Pro (2008 and 2009 models). So there will be a limitation to 1x 500 MB/s or 2x 250 MB/s, but so far there is no drive able to deliver such peak speed, only some future SSD could start saturating this card. Last but not least, it is unclear in the motherboard will manage deep sleep mode for devices plugged via this card.

An analyst from TownHall Investment Research, Gerard Hallaren, indicates  that AT&T is investing disproportionately in its wired network infrastructure whereas its wireless service and corresponding customer satisfaction lag behind other carriers. According to the analyst,  AT&T would have to invest an additional 5 billion USD to upgrade its wireless infrastructure to the level of its biggest competitor, Verizon Wireless. If Verizon spend 5 billion more than AT&T on its network over the last 3 years, this difference in spending is becoming huge and might explain why Apple also decided to stop exclusive partnership in USA, as Verizon network is known for being more reliable than the one from a AT&T till it is really tested

Apple tablet starts showing up in app-tracking stats, kinda

It's sort of funny that this is the hardest evidence we have of an Apple tablet, but here we go: mobile app analytics company Flurry is saying that it's detected around 50 devices on Apple's Cupertino campus that have the "characteristics" of a tablet, running a new version of the iPhone OS numbered 3.2. How? Around 200 different apps with Flurry's tracking code were downloaded and used on these mystery devices -- mostly games, followed by entertainment and media apps -- and Flurry first noticed this new device in October, with numbers picking up in January. Unfortunately, Flurry hasn't said what these mysterious tablet characteristics are, so we don't have much

Apple's Tablet runs iPhone apps according to Flurry

Flurry, an analytics company that tracks iPhone apps, says that over the weekend they started seeing Apple Tablets (why no rez proof then?) which are running the iPhone OS 3.2 (not 4.0?).  We're waiting on more proof before we believe this one.

Apple stepping up its efforts against cloners in China?

There was an interesting report out of Shenzhen, China this week which had Apple Inc. officials coordinating with Shenzhen police to raid a workshop in the city’s business district.  They seized more than 1,000 iPhone clones and 6,000 phone batteries.   The report stated that Apple's team on the ground in China was responsible for the raid. Apple is sending staff to Shenzhen to learn more about the case and could possibly meet the press Thursday, an Apple staff member surnamed Xiao, who is with Apple’s market surveillance department in southern China, said yesterday. Shenzhen is in southern China near Hong Kong whe

Only three more days of AT&T exclusivity on the iPhone?

HotHardware reports that AT&T's exclusivity on the iPhone is a mere three days from being over.   That would mean the announcement on Wednesday might not only be about Tabletmania, it might also be the ushering in of new mobile carrier partner(s) in the US.  The report stopped short of naming Verizon, but it did mention that AT&T was sick of having the iPhone "hurt its image": Inside of AT&T, we are hearing that the iPhone is causing more trouble than ever before. On some level, having the iPhone is hurting AT&T's image. Because they are the only company to carry it, and it's such a data hog, it's largely to blame for AT&T's network troubles. We don

Did Steve Jobs say: “Apple Tablet Will Be The Most Important Thing I’ve Ever Done” ?

According to TechCrunch he said that very thing to various different sources -- that they've heard from second hand.   Jeez, like expectations weren't high enough already.  In any case, here's a video from awhile ago That would also be a bummer for his wife and kids

TomTom data finds drivers aren't speeding much, are being watched

Sure, you might be able to avoid speed cameras with an array of dash-mounted gadgets, but there's also another unseen eye that might be keeping an eye on your speeding habits: your GPS unit. Of course, GPS makers aren't too interested in collecting individual users' data (at least, we hope not), but they are collecting some general data, and TomTom has now released a few of its findings. Most notably, it found that drivers in just about every state stay within the speed limit on average, with only Mississippi edging 0.1 miles per hour over the top speed limit of 70 MPH. Things get a bit more interesting when you get down to specific routes in the United States, however, where the I-15 in Utah and Nevada comes out

Netzschnippsel: Jobs strahlt, Ballmer signiert

„This will be the most important thing I’ve ever done“

Laser-based 'clock' shortens beam as wake-up time draws closer

It's probably not the clock you need to build if being punctual is your modus operandi, but it's sufficiently nerdy nonetheless. One Nirav Patel -- which may or may not be related to our own Mr. Patel -- decided to hand craft his own "sleep remaining indicator," which utilizes a slowly rotating servo, a laser beam and a timer in order to work its magic. Put simply, the beam gets shorter and shorter as one's wake-up time draws near, but oddly enough, you'll never be able to see its awesomeness if you're actually sleeping. Quite the conundrum, no?

Great Wall Cross PC U150 Ion-izes the Eee Keyboard

Our interest in the ASUS Eee Keyboard has thoroughly waned as the Atom N270-based internals have aged with time, but the new Cross PC U150 from China's Great Wall puts a little juice back into the remixed C64 form factor with the addition of NVIDIA Ion graphics. Sadly there's no battery or wireless HD out, and it doesn't support dual displays -- the internal 5-inch touchscreen on the right shuts off when an external monitor is connected -- so we're not sold on this guy as a lap-based HTPC, but we're willing to check it out. Anyone got 3888 Yuan ($570) and an extr

Pentax readying designer H90, L10 cameras

A discovery on an online reseller's website Sunday (since pulled) has revealed that Pentax plans to draw attention at the upcoming PMA photography show with two unique cameras. The Optio H90 and L10 (pictured at top) will both carry a vintage look, with the former carrying some of the style of a rangefinder while the L10 will resemble a conventional film camera. Little is immediately shown in the images beyond the look, though the L10 will have a 5X, 5.1-25.5mm lens; both are regular compact cameras rather than Micro Four Thirds or DSLR models.
