Google Voice returning to the iPhone via Safari
Apple's removal of Google Voice apps from the App Store has not stopped developers from finding a workaround, as VoiceCentral plans to return the service to the iPhone via Safari, according to TechCrunch. The new app, known as the Black Swan edition, is entirely web-based and appears to eliminate the roadblock posed by Apple's review team.

ASUS prepping 17.3-inch Core i5-powered X77 gaming laptop?
Details are still fuzzy at best, but word on the street has it that ASUS is preparing to unveil a new mobile gaming rig in short order. The biggest news is the powerhouse within: it'll purportedly be based on Intel's dual-core Core i5-430M processor. In addition to that, the rumored GPU will be a potent ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730, which is likely to feature DDR3 memory. You'll also find a pair of 500GB hard drives, 4GB of RAM, an eSATA and HDMI port and a 1,600 x 900 LED panel that spans 17.3-inches diagonally. There's no official availability or pricing information to speak of, but Fudzilla is reporting that it should show up

RIAA's three-strikes rule a "scarecrow?"
The Recording Industry Association of America's ISP piracy warning deals are nothing but a public relations front, industry sources claimed yesterday. While the music label group had initially suggested it would have a deal that would disconnect repeat offenders, the purported insiders say labels wanted a "scarecrow" that would spook pirates even though the threat of disconnection couldn't legally be enforced. The aim, according to CNET, was primarily to replace the tactic of suing individual customers with an approach that still implied punishment.

Tablet rumors drive Apple stock to record high
Apple stock (AAPL) on Thursday surged to a new record high amid rampant rumors surrounding the unconfirmed tablet device. Shares reached past $209 in late day trading, up approximately 10 percent in a single week. The stock has more than doubled in value since it bottomed out around $78 in January of this year.

JVC outs upgraded wood grain in-ear headphones
Two years after launching its FX-500 wood grain earbuds, JVC today unveiled an upgrade, the HP-FX700 set. The new earbuds have better sound quality thanks to a hybrid dual cone, with a peak output of 104dB at 1mW. Frequency response range is rated at between 6Hz and 26,000Hz at 16Ω.

Spark, Thoughts notetaking apps debut
Two new notetaking programs have been announced. The first, Spark, handles both tasks and notes, grouping the former into projects, also syncing them with iCal. The software can be launched with a single hotkey, and also sit in the Menu Bar in order to avoid cluttering the Dock. Spark is a free download for Snow Leopard-based Macs.

Snowflake-shaped photovoltaic cells bring the holiday cheer
Sandia National Laboratories have unveiled their newest photovoltaic cells -- glitter-sized particles made of crystalline silicon. The cells are made using common microelectronic and microelectromechanical systems techniques, and the results are pretty spectacular to behold. More interestingly, however, is the fact that they use 100 times less material in generating the same amount of energy as a regular solar cell.

NVIDIA Fermi performance scaled back?
NVIDIA has quietly scaled back the ambitions of its Fermi-based hardware, a document (PDF) on its own site may have revealed. A specs sheet for the Tesla 20 now shows even the faster hardware using 448 visual processing cores versus the publicly promised 512. It has also ramped down the intenral clock for these individual cores to at most 1.4GHz, slightly lower than the current generation.

Apple investor: Jobs takes $1; shareholder meeting Feb 25
Apple boss Steve Jobs took home his usual one dollar salary in 2009, though the value of his stake in the company climbed to $1.1 billion.
Jobs is famed for not taking the kind of perks pocketed by many other CEOs, though the Gulfstream V jet he was given by the company in 1999 always wins a mention. 2009 saw Jobs take just $4,000 reimbursement for company-related travel on that jet. (He was reimbursed $871,000 in 2008).
The company co-founder holds 5.5 million shares in Apple. He has not sold any shares since his return to the company in 1997, and has not been granted any new shares since 2003.
Jobs is also the largest individual shareholder of The Walt Disney Co. His 7.4 percent stake is currently worth about $4.5 billion.

Opera 10.5 pre-alpha is on Carakan, by far the fastest Javascript rendering available
Look, we know there is a "Ain't nuthin wrong with Safari" crowd out there who isn't interested in other browsers like Firefox, Chrome and now Opera. That's OK, just head over to the next story.
For those who are interested, Opera has an Alpha release of their new Javascript Engine, Caraken, that is damn fast on slower connections (like the Mifi here at the parents' vacation house). Lifehacker ran some tests and it clobbered everying out there. I'm using Gmail faster that even Chrome and Safari but can't vouch for any of these tests personally.

Google purchase of AdMob being investigated by FTC
The Federal Trade Commission is launching a closer investigation at Google's proposed purchase of mobile marketer AdMob for $750 million. The US antitrust regulator has requested more information regarding the deal earlier this week, according to Google. It claims to not have much cause for concern and acknowledges the tighter scrutiny is inevitable as the company grows larger.

Ustream's iPhone app to get higher quality streaming video
Ustream has announced that its video streaming app for the iPhone 3GS will soon support higher resolutions and frame rates. The company is currently testing new encoding processes claimed to be faster than the current system. The improvements will bring picture quality comparable to basic web streaming, with potential resolutions above 640x480 pixels at up to 30 frames per second.

Apple had to confront fraud at its After-Sales service centres
After many discussions and investigations with informed people, we learn that Apple have been the victim of frauds by various approved maintenance Centres. This is one of the reasons that caused the hardening of the conditions and the assumption of responsibility by Apple, and in particular, the creation of many software which decides, instead of a technician, if a machine can be repaired under guarantee or not. A reader, who worked for some time in a maintenance center made a point of informing us (under cover of anonymity) about these practices.
Each machine placed in the after-sales service is input to a database of Apple (gsx.apple.com). That makes it possible to check if it is under guarantee or not. From the serial number the technician has access to the pdf for disassembling and has all the spare parts available. The strange part is that the number of the parts are not recorded at Apple. Windows 7 having no effect on Macs in workplace
A new ChangeWave study suggests that the release of Windows 7 and a slightly recovered economy are helping regular PC sales at work but aren't slowing down an increase in adoption of Macs at the workplace. Dell and HP should benefit from a slight increase in corporate sales with a respective 33 percent and 18 percent companies planning to buy both desktops and notebooks from the two. Viewsonic VOT132 nettop review
You don't need booming sales figures to tell you that netbooks have taken over the world -- the mobile computing world, at least. Their screenless and battery-free brethren, however, have yet to find quite the same success. Nettops are great tiny little machines but in general they've been under-powered and, while people love eking out another hour or two of battery life on the road, few sadly care whether their desktop computers pull down 17 or 71 watts of juice. The FTC veut wants to force Intel to open itself to competition
In its crusade against Intel, the FTC seems to want to do everything to oblige the foundry to open part of its market to competition. The large recipient of this procedure will certainly be NVidia. Indeed, the FTC seems to want to force Intel to make it possible for its competitors to interface their products with its processors. It is precisely at this point that Intel blocked NVidia since only the successor of the 9400M can be grafted onto the Arrendale processors, the successors of Core 2. Another point that must also drive Intel up the wall relates to the X86 licences. The company is currently holder of the main patents concerning the X86 instructions without which it is impossible to manufacture a compatible processor. Apple explores tactile feedback for multi-touch keyboard
Apple has filed for a patent on a touch-surface keyboard with tactile feedback, US Patent and Trademark Office documents show. A problem with typing on touchscreens is that users must typically look at the keys to know what is being pressed; by contrast, most physical keyboards allow people to gauge where their fingers are through bumps and ridges. Apple's solution would pop up an "articulating frame" whenever typing is engaged, and move it out of the way when it is not.

Seiko bringt die sprechende Pyramiden-Uhr von 1984 zurück auf den japanischen Markt

1984 brachte Seiko diese Uhr in Pyramidenform auf den Markt. Während wir das Design immer noch unertröglich hässlich finden und nicht mal Marty McFlys Nachttisch damit in der digital restaurierten Fassung von "Zurück in die Zukunft" schmücken wollen in Japan kann man das Teil jetzt wieder kaufen. Am Design hat sich so gut wie gar nichts getan, die Uhr spricht immer noch mit euch - jetzt allerdings mit noch mehr Infos: Neben der Uhrzeit verrät euch die Pyramide jetzt auch, wie warm oder kalt es ist. Qik debuts live streaming iPhone app
Having been submitted over two weeks ago, Qik's live streaming app has finally appeared at the App Store. In contrast with the earlier Qik for 3GS, which can only record and upload, Qik Live is designed for real-time broadcasting to a web audience. The app supports both 3G and Wi-Fi connections, and any model of iPhone, though the original is effectively tied to Wi-Fi hotspots.

China Unicom orders favor Win Mo, Symbian over iPhone
China Unicom in its next wave of phone orders will still prefer older smartphone platforms over Apple's, company general manager Zhang Zhijiang said this week. Of the carrier's mix, only 4 percent will be iPhones while 8 percent will use some variant of Windows Mobile. About 16 percent will use some variant of Symbian.

San Francisco could soon require that all cellphones sold in local stores include an easily visible warning of their radiation levels. Mayor Gavin Newsom says he hopes to pass an ordinance in January that would demand the public display of the possible effects and has backed a city commission that would call on the US government to require such labels on the packaging. Empfang von HD+ soll bald mit herkömmlichen HDTV-Receivern möglich sein
Die hochauflösenden Privatsender RTL HD, Sat.1 HD, ProSieben HD, VOX HD und Kabel Eins HD werden auch auf einigen bereits im Markt befindlichen HDTV-Receivern mit herkömmlicher CI-Schnittstelle empfangbar sein. Das hat die für den Betrieb der HD+-Plattform des Satellitenbetreibers SES Astra zuständige HD Plus GmbH mitgeteilt. Laut einem Bericht des Online-Magazins 20 Minuten hat Steve Jobs heuer erneut nur 1 US Dollar Gehalt von Apple überwiesen bekommen.

Apple boss Steve Jobs took home his usual one dollar salary in 2009, though the value of his stake in the company climbed to $1.1 billion.
Jobs is famed for not taking the kind of perks pocketed by many other CEOs, though the Gulfstream V jet he was given by the company in 1999 always wins a mention. 2009 saw Jobs take just $4,000 reimbursement for company-related travel on that jet. (He was reimbursed $871,000 in 2008).
The company co-founder holds 5.5 million shares in Apple. He has not sold any shares since his return to the company in 1997, and has not been granted any new shares since 2003.

Nach einem Bericht der Financial Times hat Apple für Ende Januar 2010 Räume im Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) gemietet. Researchers receive grant to develop color-changing contacts for diabetics
Contact lenses that act as a glucose monitoring system for diabetics aren't exactly a new idea, but it looks like a group of researchers from the University of Western Ontario might be a bit closer to making them a reality, as they've now received a $200,000+ grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation to further develop the technology. FCC finds Verizon responses "troubling"
The FCC in a response (PDF) today rebuffed Verizon's claims that its ETF rate hikes are necessary. Commissioner Mignon Clyburn in a public letter described Verizon's justifications for doubling early termination fees as "unsatisfying" and sometimes "troubling." While the carrier primarily explained them as necessary for covering costs when buyers of the Droid and other phones leave their contract, Clyburn says Verizon has expanded the reasoning well beyond just the actual hardware.

Amazon Kindle gets its DRM stripped (for the time being)
If there is one near universal gripe folks have with the Kindle, it's the DRM-laden files. It's no wonder, then, that the thing has been a lightning rod for the "information wants to be free crowd," almost since the beginning. 500,000 Nooks by March, new orders due February
As many as half a million of Barnes & Noble's Nook readers will reach the US within four months, southeast Asian tips said today. The bookseller has long said it has been "overwhelmed" by demand, but those aware of its supply chain now tell TechCrunch that about 60,000 Nook devices will have shipped in 2009 and about 500,000 total by March. The number is believed well above internal forecasts and is helped by Foxconn being almost immediately ready to step up its manufacturing.

Developers being asked to ready apps for full screen/ 7-inch [Update:Munster, BGR]
According to Silicon Alley Insider, Apple has asked a few select developers to ready a full screen mode of their apps for a demo next month. Obviously, with all of the tablet chatter and specifically the Financial Times' report yesterday (and iLounge's earlier report) of a January announcement, it would seem to indicate this would be for a tablet announcement, though an AppleTV update could also be a recipient of a full screen app update.

January 26th - Tablet Tuesday?
If the Financial Times is right, we might have only one month to wait until "Tablet Tuesday". They report:
Apple has something big up its sleeve for next month. The company has rented a stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for several days in late January, according to people familiar with the plans. Apple is expected to use the venue to make a major product announcement on Tuesday, January 26th. Both YBCA and Apple declined to comment.
Remember, Apple turned down Macworld Expo 2010 which is usually scheduled for a week or so before this event. Instead,

Apple to hold tablet event January 26th?
Apple's January event is slated for the 26th of that month, an alleged leak maintains today. The firm is believed to have rented out the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco to unveil a "major" product on January 26th. It would also have access to the small theater for "several days," most likely for Steve Jobs or other Apple executives to conduct final rehearsals in advance of the actual presentation.
