T-Mobile gives reps troubleshooting tips for Nexus One's 3G issues
T-Mobile's already starting to acknowledge that the Nexus One might have a love-hate relationship with its 3G spectrum, but we've been able to track down some internal documentation on exactly how the carrier's going about resolving this. Naturally, they're recommending affected customers reset the phone -- an old standby that actually works a troublingly high percentage of the time -- and hitting them up with some knowledge about the behavior of the device in different situations (you don't see the 3G icon when you're on WiFi, for instance, nor if you're not in a 3G area). As far as T-Mob knows, exchanging the handset doesn't help so they're not currently recommending it, but they are asking folks with other 3G devices to see i

Microsoft slams Android as "free like a puppy"
Microsoft Windows Consumer Product GM James DeBragga drew attention at a CES panel late last week with remarks attacking Android. When discussing netbooks, the executive criticized the OS after eDGe creator Entourage's CEO praised it for being free. DeBragga said it was only "free like a puppy" and suggested it was trouble when it actually came to using it.

App Store approval process significantly speeding up?
Apple has in recent days dramatically accelerated the approval time for iPhone apps, developer anecdotes suggest. iTunes Connect, the service through which apps are submitted, was temporarily disabled between December 23rd and the 28th. In the time following its return however, some developers are reporting that Apple has approved titles in as little as two to three days.

Nokia 'Saga' accidentally outed in AccuWeather ad?
We're not quite sure what to make of this, but it appears that the AccuWeather app for S60 5th Edition devices has gone ahead and leaked an unknown Nokia device -- the "Saga" -- which appears to be a sort of N97 Mini Mini (two "Minis" on purpose there) that trades the tilting screen for a more traditional flat sliding one. As Symbian-Guru points out, Nokia itself doesn't typically assign names to its handsets -- it leaves that job to its carrier partners -- so this might simply be a branded version of one of the existing N97 variants, but naturally, the leaked device theory is juicier. T-Mobile Fender MyTouch 3G in the wild, due for launch January 20
A lot's happened since T-Mobile first announced the myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition, but if you're looking for last-gen Android hardware in the sweetest case around, your wait is almost up: test units are going our to T-Mobile reps, and that formal launch will occur on January 20th. No word on pricing, but we can't imagine it'll be cheaper than the current myTouch 3G, especially since it adds a much-needed 3.5mm headphone jack and has that fancy woodgrain finish, bundled 16GB microSD card, and preloaded music. Google Docs now doubles as online backup service
Google on Tuesday announced it will soon upgrade its Google Docs service to hold files up to 250MB in size, letting users back up large graphics files, RAW photos, ZIP archives and more in the cloud. Google believes users can now give up USB drives they need to carry around with them to access their files on different computers and is an easier way to share larger files that cannot be easily emailed to co-workers or friends.

Sprint hooking up with Walmart for WiMAX buildout?
Sprint's got a nice head start in the 4G race over Verizon and AT&T -- a message it's heavily broadcasting these days -- but with the onslaught of LTE networks and equipment around the world now just months away, momentum is unquestionably going to shift, giving the carrier every reason to act quickly to build out now and score as many subscribers as it possibly can. Former Apple software exec joins investment firm [u]
(Updated with plans) A former chief software technology officer for Apple, Avadis Tevanian, has announced plans to join a private equity firm connected to Palm. Tevanian will become a managing director at Elevation Partners, having most recently served on the Dolby board of directors, and earlier on the board for Tellme Networks. The executive was with Apple for nine years, serving as the senior VP of software engineering between 1997 and 2003 and as the CSTO until he left in 2006.

Palm's webOS 1.3.5.2 for European Pres adds Bluetooth tethering
webOS version 1.3.5.2 for Euro-spec GSM Pres just hit over the last handful of hours, bringing a host of changes -- but the biggest, perhaps, is the addition of Bluetooth tethering capability. The move is particularly interesting in light of Palm's announcement last week that it'll use its Mobile Hotspot app to enable tethering via WiFi, but it's unclear how much (if any) crossover there'll be between units that support one technology or the other. Microsoft misses injunction deadline, pulls Office
Microsoft hasn't successfully shipped a retail version of Office 2007 that clears the permanent injuction that took effect Monday, according to a quick check of Microsoft's online store. All boxed versions of the 2007 productivity suite are listed as "not available," and only downloadable copies are available today. Officially, Microsoft says just that the physical editions will be "available soon."

Apple rumor roundup: improbable removable battery edition
Now that CES is officially over, it's apparently time for the vague Apple rumor factory to start churning out sketchy reports about tablets, next-gen iPhones, and "vanishing" domain names. Yeah, it's getting silly out there, but judging by our tip box you all can't get enough, so let's do this thing rapid-fire style.
The rumor: The Korea Times, citing unnamed sources at Korea Telecom, says the carrier is planning for a 4G iPhone featuring an OLED display, a front-facing video camera, a fast new dual-core CPU, and a removable battery. General launch is expected in June, but corporate clients will be doing a "litmus test" in April.
Our take: We will eat our hats if Apple puts a removable battery in the iPhone. Plus, Apple doesn't do focus group testing,

Google's 'Gdrive' to compete with MobileMe iDisk storage
Google announced its GDrive storage today which will compete with Apple's MobileMe service (and Microsoft's Office Live). Google's service will be an add on to its Docs storage interface and will be Web only for the moment, though third party 'uploaders' exist. Google's service is free for the first Gigabyte but then is another $.25/GB/year. So for instance, if you wanted to store $99 MobileMe iDisk's 20GB of Cloud storage, you'd have to pay Google $5/year. The service is also consolidated for enterprise users.
To be fair, MobileMe is far more integrated into the OS than Google's offering. Google seems to be building for future storage with its ChomeOS rather that being a virtual drive for your current file system.

Die App Music Clips (für 0,79 Cent im App Store erhältlich) der Firma Musicsoft Arts scannt die SongLibrary deines iPod Touch oder iPhones und sucht anschliessend nach frei zugänglichen Musik Videos von diesen Songs im Internet. Ooma Telo HD, Handset, and iPhone app hands-on
We stopped by Ooma's booth at CES for a quick hands-on with the new HD Telo and some time with the iPhone app. Voice quality on the service was pretty decent, although we did notice a pretty significant bit of lag -- we're assuming things would work better on a quality connection, as opposed to the slammed pipes here on the show floor. The new DECT handset was also quite nice, although it took a second to figure out how to initiate a call. Apple tablet may not have any cameras at all
Apple's tablet may lack any kind of camera when it ships if a leak reflects the truth. Technology writer John Gruber, whose sources have historically been accurate, understands that the large touchscreen device doesn't have any cameras, whether a forward-facing camera for chat or a back camera for photos. Consulting house MOTO Development Group has performed an analysis of smartphone touchscreen sensitivity, putting the iPhone up against three Android-powered rivals: the HTC Droid Eris, the Motorola Droid, and the newly released Google Nexus One. iMac 27": Flickering Issue not Completely Solved Yet
The website http://imac.squeaked.com gives to unfortunate owners of buggy iMac 27" the opportunity to report their problem as well as the detailed specification of their hardware. If the firmware update released by Apple on December 22nd, 2009 to fix the glitch and flickering issues on iMac 27" worked for most models, it did not help for about 30% of affected iMacs. So, the problem seems to be more complex or at least have several origins. Currently, Apple is exchanging buggy iMacs as the standard procedure when customers report an issue. However, the replacing iMac is not necessarily issue-free as reported by some owners. Let's hope that Apple finally solved the issue, and that the new units to be sent this year will really bring customers the fantastic computer they were expecting when they placed their order.

Free laptops and broadband promised for 270,000 poor UK families
This isn't quite on par with Finland's contention that 1Mb broadband is a "right," but UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged £300 million ($484 million) for the provision of laptops and broadband connections to low income families. The idea is for parents to be connected to their children's school, so that they may access reports and track progress online. We don't know if broadband is going to be quite the panacea that it's being promoted as, but at least an effort is being made to make internet access truly universal. Former domain holder defends cybersquatting
A former owner of 16 web domains, which have since handed over to Apple, has issued a public statement on allegations of cybersquatting. Daniel Bijan explains that he bought macbookpro.com as he was investigating the domain business, and that "being fairly naive," he decided to continue buying domains given the absence of a cease-and-desist request from Apple. In a new brand of competition dissing, James DeBragga, General Manager of Windows Consumer Product Marketing, says Android "is free like a puppy." The comment came in the context of the CEO of Entourage praising Android for the fact that's it's versatile and free -- major motivating factors behind his use of the OS on his Edge e-reader device. Avadis “Avie” Tevanian takes Elevation seat
Like Palm, investment company Elevation Partners sure likes homing those ex-Apple people, with the computer company’s former chief software technology officer, Avadis “Avie” Tevanian now becoming Managing Director at Elevation.
He’s got lots of company - Fred Anderson, Apple’s former CFO is also a Managing Director at Elevation, and, as we all know, the firm is the largest investor in Palm, led by ex-Apple-exec, Jon Rubinstein.

Debby Downer Gruber: No camera, webcam or otherwise on the tablet
Well, that's no fun is it? John Gruber says there is no camera on Apple's upcoming tablet. Not just a webcam but even a still shot camera ain't going to be there. That certainly flies in the face of other reports we've been hearing this week. Maybe Apple had to cut corners to get it down to $1000 - or a matter of thinness just like the iPod touch?

Tougher GSM, 3G security cracked
The security of GSM phone calls dropped again late Monday with word that the standard's second, more guarded encryption standard has been broken. Following a first crack of the simpler standard, researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science say they have cracked the A5/3 security cipher (nicknamed Kasumi) by using what's known as a "sandwich" attack. The group accomplished its goal by creating a distinguishing trait for the key and using just four related keys to determine the key for Kasumi itself.

Casio digital camera can locate itself indoors
Casio at CES showed off a unique prototype of a location-aware camera based on the company's existing EX-10 shooter. The EX-10HG (Hybrid GPS) has a built-in GPS sensor for geotagging photos when outdoors, but when a signal is lost once users go indoors or are in heavily built-up downtown areas, its three-axis accelerometers kick in to determine the direction and distance it has traveled since it last saw a satellite. A rudimentary map is also built in, allowing users to see where they've been, or where they've captured photos or videos more specifically.

Liquavista, eine Tochterfirma von Philips, hat seit ihrer Entstehung noch nicht allzuviel auf die Beine stellen können, aber jetzt scheint es voranzugehen: auf der mit E-Book Readern gespickten CES haben sie Engadget Spanien ihren Prototypen E-Book Reader Pebble vorgestellt, der aber noch nicht für die Serienproduktion vorgesehen ist. Huge iPhone or 'tablet' glass spotted?
MacObserver says they've got a picture of the forthcoming tablet's glass display. They've had mixed luck with these things before (remember the 3GS rubberized back plate?). This one has a hole in the upper right corner, presumably for a camera.
We're not sure of the scale (they say 10-inches diagonal conveniently), but could this also be the 4G iPhone?

RadTech preps adjustable notebook cooling stand
RadTech has announced that a new notebook stand, the OmniStand, is now available for pre-order online. The accessory allows allows heat from a computer to dissipate without fans or other powered cooling techniques. Remote Desktop 3.3.2 erschienen
Seit heute ist das Update für Remote Desktop 3.3.2 erhältlich. Hiermit wurden einige Bugs beseitigt sowie mehr Kompatibilität und Systemstabilität, vor allem auf der Clientseite erreicht. Besonders im Bereich Reporting, IP-Adressverwaltung und die Handhabung von NAT (Network Address Translation) sollen wesentliche Verbesserungen stattgefunden haben.
Sowohl die Version für die Clients als auch die Admin-Version wurden aktualisiert.

Warner given $9 million as part of Lala buyout
Warner Music was paid $9 million under the terms of the Apple buyout of Lala, SEC documents reveal. Lala specializes in streaming music over the web, and before the Apple deal received some $35 million in funding, including $20 million from Warner. Am späteren Abend schalten wir für ungefähr eine halbe Stunde auf eine Wartungs-Seite um. Am kommenden Samstag sind dann noch einmal größere Arbeiten im Hintergrund geplant. Mac OS X 10.6.3 to use OpenGL 3.0?
The next Snow Leopard update will support OpenGL 3.0, reports suggest. References to the graphics technology are said to lay within the latest developer builds of Mac OS X 10.6.3, although the OS is not yet fully compatible. Casio EX-10HG 'hybrid GPS' prototype taps into accelerometers for pinpoint accuracy
It's not a completely new idea, accelerometers have been enhancing GPS devices for a while now with additional velocity and directional information when the GPS signal is weak, but now Casio is giving it a shot in its new Exilim EX-H10 prototype camera. The "hybrid GPS" shooter does the regular geotagging thing with its onboard GPS, but when signal is weak (like when indoors, for instance), the camera augments the location data with guesstimates gleaned from its onboard accelerometers. The camera also has pretty detailed maps, so you could almost use the device for navigation, though the "pushpin" view is a good start. Hit up the source link for some more shots.

Those of you making use of T-Mobile's VOIP offerings to save some minutes, hang onto your WiFi. The newly Google-favored carrier has decided to axe its HotSpot@Home service, meaning no more calls over WiFi from home. T-Mo will allow existing subscribers to carry out their existing contracts (if only to avoid giving them an early out), and everyone can still make calls over WiFi at the company's public hotspots, but no new folks will be able to add the service to their accounts, meaning this old offering won't die, it'll just fade away.

Gartner rechnet 2010 mit steigenden PC-Preisen

DisplayPort 1.2 spec blessing for creative pros
Speaking of innovation and the uncanny Apple-related coverage storming out of France this week, news now that the new version of DisplayPort, (v.1.2) has been officially unveiled, with the final spec expected this year.
As we all know, all current Macs support output through a Mini DisplayPort: iMac, MacBook and MacBook Pro models use Mini DisplayPort while the Mac Mini and Mac Pro models have both a Mini DisplayPort and either a DVI port (Mac Pro) or Mini DVI port (Mac Mini).
What’s new in the new DisplayPort version?
Quite a lot - it's faster and even permits use of up to four monitors across one connection (good news for video and creative pros, once the standard's finalised, we think).

OpenGL 3 in Vorabversion von Mac OS X 10.6.3 entdeckt

Apple posts Remote Desktop 3.3.2 updates
Apple has published twin updates for the Remote Desktop component of Mac OS X, bringing the software up to v3.3.2. The client update is a 4.21MB download, and makes several fixes to setup, distribution, asset management and the tool's main functions. Upgrading to v3.3.x will no longer reset client access privileges for instance, and the software should now properly report MacBook Air MAC addresses as well as several other pieces of data.

Apple sparking 10in LCD shortage; photo leaked?
Apple may have triggered a shortage for netbook manufacturers in the run-up to its rumored tablet device, according to talk from the CES show floor passed along late Monday. An unnamed electronics designer claims to TG Daily that Apple has pre-ordered not only "all" 10-inch LCD panels from suppliers but similar-size OLEDs as well. Mac OS 10.6.3 to support Open GL 3.0?
Hardmac reports that the latest developer releases of the Mac OS are starting to support OpenGL 3.0. In fact, according to ATI's utility, 95% of th elibraries are currently supported. The only extention not supported in the current build is Shader language Language 1.3.
Apple continues to deploy support for Open GL 3.0 that was so far absent in Mac OS X while already supported by our graphic cards. Rund zwei Wochen vor dem noch unbestätigten Apple-Event hat Mac Observer ein angebliches Foto der Frontpartie des erwarteten Apple-Tablets veröffentlicht. Das Bild zeigt einen schwarzen Rahmen mit Aussparungen für ein 10-Zoll-Display, einen Home-Button und eine Kamera. Google double-dipping on Nexus One cancel fees?
Google is making buyers of the subsidized Nexus One pay twice if they cancel early, according to the company's own Terms of Sale. The search company charges an "Equipment Recovery Fee" of $350 for the smartphone if they cancel their service before 120 days have passed. Verizon: 4G may end unlimited mobile data plans
Verizon Wireless is allegedly set to change its pricing structure for mobile data plans as the company transitions to the 4G LTE standard, according to a Washington Post report. With tablets of all kinds shimmering onto the debutante’s ball room that was CES last week, it seems a lot of manufacturers have been asking where have all the 10-inch LCD and OLED screens have gone - and TG Daily tells us Apple grabbed them all.

Warner Music claws back $9 million on Apple Lala.com deal
More info relating to Apple’s (AAPL) recent Lala.com acquisition, basically suggesting the major labels lucked out on their investment in the streaming service.

Kodak und Samsung legen Patentstreit bei

Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute ein Update für Remote Desktop Clients frei gegeben. Das Update, welches ARD auf Version 3.3.2 aktualisiert, ist 5.8 MB gross und kann via Software-Aktualisierung oder Apple.com geladen werden.

A charger that feeds on Wi-Fi waves
Here is some information that will start again the fears of those which think that Wi-Fi is dangerous to one's health. The company RCA announced that they are close to marketing a very special charger.
Equipped with an internal battery, this small device is able to charge or make function any object having a mini USB plug or more generally functioning with 5V.The innovation is in the way in which the device recharges itself. It does not have power adaptor, nor a solar collector. "It quite simply" uses the Wi-Fi waves which pass through it and to recovers energy from them. RCA hopes to sell it for $40 this summer and looking further ahead wants to release a battery using same technology.

Netkas identified an interesting point in Mac OS X 10.6.3 beta, not yet documented by Apple:
Apple continues to deploy support for Open GL 3.0 that was so far absent in Mac OS X while already supported by our graphic cards. Maybe with some luck we could soon expect a full support for Open GL 3.0 as well as a game editor based on Open GL 3.0, that will give us an optimized engine, instead of "Ciderized" games with important compatibility issues with Snow Leopard (such as Spore)

iPhone explosion prevails; Palm Pre sales slow in Ireland/UK, reports
iPhone sales in France continue going from strength to strength, even while competitor Palm sees Pre sales tank in the UK and Ireland, it seems.
France Telecom sold 200,000 iPhones in December, deputy chief executive Stephane Richard told Europe 1 radio Monday, "The iPhone is a great machine,” the Dep CEO explained.
Then consider a second report from Mobile Industry Review: “It seems the Irish haven’t taken to the old Pre. My source reckons that a whopping 220 units have been sold since launch.”

Orange drops Apple tablet confirmation?
Update - Apples to Oranges: Orange gave Paid Content a call. In regard to the many reports claiming these translated statements equated to a tablet "confirmation"
But it was nothing of the sort, the Orange PR machine tells paidContent:UK: “A few comments taken out of context, then interpreted into English.”
A full statement emailed to us has further back-tracking: “These responses in no way reflect Orange’s confirmation of the existence of the rumoured device. The spokesperson was merely confirming that he is aware of the speculation surrounding a launch and that Orange would be delighted to have such a product were it ever to be available.”
Our take: Someone at Orange got a long distance call from Cupertino and their ears are probably still ringing.

Speck unveils over 30 new designs at CES 2010
Speck has unveiled a wide range of new and improved accessories for notebook computers and mobile phones. The company has updated its CandyShell cases for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, bringing seven new color combinations such as GuavaGoo Pink and Nightshade Purple, while eight new designs are available in the Fitted series of hard-shell cases. Imagination Technologies is a key company for Apple: it provides the graphical chips used in iPhone 3GS. To illustrate how it is for Cupertino, Apple bought shares from Imagination Technologies and now hold about 10% of its value.the company announced new products, one of them will most likely end up in the iPhone 4G: the POWERVR SGX545. Stéphane Richard will have learn it the hard way. When dealing with Apple on a not yet unveiled product, you should think twice before speaking to a journalist. While Stéphane Richard was rumored to soon become the new CEO of Orange, this story will for sure not make the best impression for future discussions with Apple.
Thanks to this interview, he moved from the status of unknown high-executive to the one of star of the web, but not necessarily fitting its carrier development. However, if one look back at what we said already yesterday, there is not much things new: it was expected that the Tablet from Apple will come, and having an integrated webcam was also a "must have feature". Concerning video-conferencing, this is already possible with many 3G mobile phone from SE or Nokia. A feature maybe new in some countries with almost no 3G network, but several years old in some EU members or in Japan.

PC pricing seeing rare jump due to shortages
The cost of computers may actually go up in the near future if a new Gartner study reflects a current trend. Even though components have dropped in price roughly 7.8 percent in the past decade, prices in 2010 are now actually expected to increase by 2.8 percent. Most of the increase comes on the back of LCD and RAM shortages. The two could see their prices pushed as much as 23 and 20 percent higher by the end of the year, according to the analysts.
