Motorola buys Super Bowl ad spot
Looks like Motorola's fully back in the game: not only does it have the hottest Android device you can (currently) buy in the Droid, word today is that the company's dished out somewhere between $2.5 and $3 million dollars for at least one Super Bowl commercial. It's been a while since Motorola last spent so lavishly on an ad campaign, so we're super curious to see what device the ad is for -- the safe bet is obviously the Droid, but CES could bring both the AT&T-destined Backflip and Sholes Tablet, so it's all up in the air. Sprint to get Sierra 4G-to-Wi-Fi mobile hotspot
Sprint's WiMAX-based 4G service will get its first pocket router early next year as a leak of training material today has revealed the carrier's plans. A mobile hotspot from Sierra Wireless, the Overdrive, should supply up to five users with the up to 6Mbps Internet access with 3G as a fallback. In a unique twist, it will have an SD card slot for storage and will treat this as a network-attached drive for everyone using the same hotspot.

GEZ-Gebührenmodell von internetfähigen Handys ist künstliche Wachstumsbremse
Der Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW) e.V. sieht in dem geplanten Gebührenmodell der GEZ einen künstlich geschaffenen Wachstumshemmer für die gesamte Internetbranche in Deutschland. So sollen laut Medienberichten alle Internetnutzer ohne Fernseher einheitlich zu GEZ-Vollzahlern werden. Auch Besitzer von internetfähigen Mobiltelefonen würden so grundsätzlich mit einem monatlichen Beitrag von derzeit 17,98 Euro belastet. Unter anderem junge Nutzer, die das Mobile Internet täglich nutzen - allerdings kaum öffentlichrechtliche Inhalte, würden ohne Ermäßigung zur Kasse gebeten. Wird Steve Jobs „Person des Jahres 2009“ ?
Die US-Website www.time.com macht derzeit ein Umfrage, wer ist die herausragende Person des Jahres 2009 . An dritter Position wird dort Apple-Chef Steve Jobs aufgeführt. Vor ihm liegen nur noch der US-Präsident Barack Obama sowie die Protestbewegung im Iran. Interessant ist auch, das selbst unsere Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel es in dieser Umfrage derzeit auf Platz sieben geschafft hat. Ob Steve Jobs es bis zur ersten Position schafft, wird aber stark bezweifelt.

Rüstungskonzern entwickelt iPhone-App für Militäreinsätze
Der US-Rüstungskonzern Raytheon will Soldaten künftig mit Programmen für das iPhone unterstützen. Das teilte das Unternehmen gestern auf einer Konferenz im US-Bundesstaat Arizona mit. Mit der ersten vorgestellten App, dem so genannten "One Force Tracker", sollen die Soldaten auf einer Karte die Positionen von Feinden und Alliierten in Echtzeit sehen können. Darüber hinaus soll das iPhone mithilfe der Programme für die sichere Kommunikation untereinander genutzt werden. Der Konzern habe sich für die Entwicklung von Apps entschieden, da diese billiger und einfacher produziert werden können als spezielle rein militärische Systeme.

USA: Mehr iPhone als Windows Mobile-Anwender
Einer aktuellen Studie nach hat es Apple mit dem iPhone endlich geschafft, Microsoft mit Windows Mobile im US Markt zu überholen. 8,97 Millionen iPhone-Besitzer gab es im Oktober diesen Jahres. Dagegen nur 7,13 Millionen Windows Mobile-Anwender.

Neue HD-Trailer Ansicht auf der Apple Trailer Seite mit Facebook und Twitter
Wer sich für neue Filme interessiert kommt um die große Trailer Seite bei Apple.com nicht herum. Dort lassen sich eine Vielzahl aktueller Trailer anschauen, die meisten sogar in HD bis zu 1080p.
In den letzten Tagen hat Apple der Seite ein kleines Makeover gegönnt, so lässt sich nun bei manchen Trailern die kleinste HD-Version (420p) direkt im Browser-Fenster betrachten. Über ein Auswahlmenü hat man die Möglichkeit zwischen Anschauen und Downloaden zu wählen.

Urteil gegen GEZ-Gebühren für Computer
Die GEZ hat in der letzten Woche eine erneute Niederlage hinnehmen müssen. Die seit Januar 2007 eingeführte Gebühr für Computer mit Internetanschluss, die privat oder geschäftlich genutzt werden, sei laut dem Verwaltungsgericht Braunschweig unzulässig. Geklagt hatte eine Dolmetscherin aus Goslar gegen den NDR. Der NDR hatte versucht für den gewerblich genutzten Zweit-PC der Klägerin Gebühren zu fordern. Das Urteil ist noch nicht rechtskräftig, also kann der NDR noch Berufung einlegen. Sollte diese dann vor dem Oberverwaltungsgericht abgewiesen werden, könnte das grössere Auswirkungen haben. Rückblick auf eine digitale Dekade
Es laufen die letzten Stunden des Jahres und die meisten Rückblicke sind mehr oder weniger per TV oder Internet gelaufen. Der Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien e.V (BITKOM) schaut mit uns noch weiter zurück. Genauer gesagt auf die letzten 10 Jahre und deren digitalen Entwicklung. Faszinierend was da so zusammenkommt.
Internet und Handy haben Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft binnen zehn Jahren radikal verändert: "Die Jahre 2000 bis 2009 werden als Digitale Dekade in die Geschichtsbücher eingehen", ist BITKOM-Präsident Prof. Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer überzeugt. No, you still can't have one (not yet, at least), but we've received a number of tips directing us Modaco forums, where admin Paul claims to have rooted Google's not-so-mysterious Nexus One. We can't validate the "superboot" file works, but the adjacent picture has popped up from another forum member as apparent anecdotal confirmation. A-DATA intros flash drive with USB 3.0 and SATA II
A-DATA this week introduced the first flash drive in the industry to use both a USB 3.0 and SATA II interface. The drive, N002, uses 8-channel architecture and is said to be capable of 200MBps sequential read and 170MBps write speeds. Until the USB 3.0 standard becomes more commonly adopted, the drive is backwards compatible with the USB 2.0 interface.

Polaroid name revived, new products due next month
The famed Polaroid name has been purchased by a new company, after the brand's previous new owners failed to successfully re-launch it earlier this year. jWIN electronics has drawn up a new licensing agreement that will give it rights to the Polaroid name, and promises to bring new products from the Polaroid brand in 2010, with some reaching shelves as early as January. DataJack to offer $40 unlimited 3G data
DataJack has promised heated competition in wide-area wireless with the launch of its own 3G service. The provider promises to be the first in years to drop the 5GB bandwidth cap imposed at rivals like AT&T and Verizon and will offer true unlimited access, making it useful as a regular and not just part-time Internet connection. Contracts also aren't required and should let customers jump to another provider at any time without a penalty.

Move over, MiFi -- this Sprint Overdrive dual-mode WiMAX / EV-DO mobile hotspot that just hit our inbox has taken over as our new object of broadband desire. Apple victory survives appeal in iPod volume lawsuit
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a 2008 district court ruling, taking the side of Apple in a class action lawsuit over iPod volume, says Reuters. Plaintiffs Joseph Birdsong and Bruce Waggoner earlier argued that iPods present an unreasonable risk of hearing loss, as they can raise their volume up to 115dB, while lacking any volume meters or noise isolation properties. Designing the stock earbuds to be placed deep in the ear canal has only exacerbated the problem, the plaintiffs alleged.

HP's Airlife, Zeen trademarks hint phones and players
HP has filed for a pair of US trademarks that hint at a major return to handheld devices. One, for the term "Airlife," would apply to handheld computers, PDAs and phones as well as computers. The other, "Zeen," would apply to a handheld that can play images, sound and text as well as the software needed to do the same. Both trademarks were requested within five weeks of each other and, given differences, that the two are complementary rather than alternate names for each other or for existing products.

FoxNews confirms "Mobility" Apple event for January
Clayton Morris at FoxNews is going on record saying that Apple is indeed holding an event in January as the Financial Times mentioned last week. He goes a step further saying that the event will focus on "Mobility". This event would likely follow a Google January 5th event that will showcase the Google Phone or Nexus one.

D-Link to introduce iPhone app for Boxee Box
D-Link and Boxee plan to introduce an iPhone application to enable remote control of the features of the two firm’s soon-to-be-announced Boxee-powered set-top box.
D-Link will showcase the free application for the iPhone and iPod touch at CES next month, the company has confirmed. It will make the application software available through the App Store, the company has said.

New OnLive Cloud gaming company levels playing field for games on PCs and Macs (and iPhones?)
Steve Perlman, a former Quicktime Guru at Apple, has a very interesting startup called OnLive. The idea is simple: Cloud gaming.
You play games over the Internet and your screen acts like a dummy terminal that operates hardcore Cloud gaming rigs (or virtualized rigs) like VNC operates remote desktops. These GPU data centers are located throughout the US because, as you might expect, the latency of button pushing and seeing the result of the button pushing is what has held up these type of scenarios in the past.

Apple to miss deadline for Boot Camp Windows 7 support
Unless an update is delivered by the end of Thursday, Apple will miss a deadline for adding official Windows 7 support to Snow Leopard's Boot Camp, reports note. For some time Apple has hosted a page on its website, promising that the support would be coming "before the end of the year." Windows 7 has been commercially available since October 22nd, and still earlier in the form of public betas and release candidates.

With Christmas out of the way and CES just around the corner we're starting to see significant momentum in the Pineview department (which is between HR and the Engadget Bouncy Moon Castle). Currently listed on Amazon.de as a pre-order item for €249 (roughly $360), the Asus Eee PC 1001P is a 10.1-inch clamshell PC featuring an Intel Atom N450 at 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM a 160GB HDD and Windows XP. Between this bad boy and that 1005P/PE we first set eyes on earlier this month, it sure looks like the next-gen processor will be available sooner rather than later. Wouldn't that be magical?

A little more on Apple Service Providers defrauding Apple
Following our article some days ago about Apple being defrauded, we have gathered some more information on this subject
One of the first words you need to know is "stitching". Stitching is the process by which an Apple Service Provider (ASP) technically defrauds Apple. This happens by a customer coming in for an out-of-warranty repair (as an example lets use a macbook top case). Korea clears flash memory makers of price fixing
Korea's Fair Trade Commission on Wednesday cleared four major memory producers of charges of price fixing. The regulators said their investigations, begun in January of 2007, found no evidence that the unnamed companies were colluding to keep flash and RAM prices high. Agency officials added that the closure of a US investigation in August also supported their decision to end the case.

Amazon today revealed bestsellers across all its categories for 2009. The Internet retailer said that its own Kindle reader was not only the top-selling electronic device for the whole year but that it was also the top product wished for as well as given as a gift in the same category. In computers, the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA netbook achieved a similar effect as it led its respective bestseller, most wished for and most gifted charts.

Palm likely calling its new Verizon models Pre Plus and Pixi Plus
We've alluded to this a couple times already, but Boy Genius Report is coming out today and saying that Verizon's webOS launch devices early next year will indeed be called the "Pre Plus" and "Pixi Plus." We're able to independently confirm that this is the intel out in the field right now -- so unless Big Red calls an audible, these are the names you should be keeping an eye on as you're scanning the shelves. 3 bit Flash Nand memory problematic?
Currently the flash memory most used is Nand MLC able to store two bits per cell. This is what one finds in USB keys and SSD discs. In order to gain in capacity, the manufacturers want to use a memory able to store 3 bits per cell; this will increase the capacities by 50% for a small cost overhead. According to Digitimes, all is not well with this X3 memory. At least certain chips using this technology have been returned to their manufacturer for problems of stability. We do not know the details of the problems, but they are probably related to errors rereading the recorded data, each cell having more energy levels. We hope that these problems are only temporary, if not, we will know at the beginning of 2010 as this will act as a brake on the increase in capacity of flash memory. This does not relate to the SSD, this memory not being reliable or fast enough for this type of use.

Occasionally, a phone exists simply because it can. Not because it's powerful; not because it offers amazing bang for the buck; not because the manufacturer negotiated some lucrative exclusivity agreement with a major carrier, and certainly not because it's introducing some groundbreaking new smartphone operating system. iWork '09 sales figures beat '08 by 50 percent
iWork '09 has managed to outperform its predecessor this year, according to data collected by the NPD Group. Sales during the first 11 months of the suite's existence, between January and November, are said to have been 50 percent higher that those for iWork '08. By contrast, iLife '09 sales are said to be roughly on par with those for iLife '08.

National Geographic has released its entire magazine collection, or 120 years' worth, all on a 160GB hard drive. The Complete National Geographic on the hard drive includes the maps, stories and high-resolution photos found in the print magazine. Soundboard 1.0.5 adds performance improvements, bugfixes
Ambrosia Software has released Soundboard 1.0.5, a new version of its audio playback app. The title lets users create libraries of their favorite clips, which can then be triggered using designated hotkeys. A range of non-destructive editing and filtering tools are included, such as ones for fading and cropping. Tech promises cheap, force-sensitive multi-touch
Young startup Touchco revealed today that it has developed a new touchscreen technology that could add pressure sensitivity to multi-touch even as it drives the cost down. Known as Interpolating Force-Sensitive Resistance (IFSR), it uses embedded resistors that alter the level of capacitance, or stored electric charge, depending on the amount of pressure applied at a given point. The technique would still allow for the light, quick touches of a capacitive touchscreen like the iPhone's but could add extra functions for more deliberate presses.

Kaufman analyst ups AAPL price target to $253
Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu has raised his price target for Apple stock from $235 to $253, citing new Q1 sales forecasts derived from industry and supply chain checks. Apple is expected to record as many as 9.5 million iPhones shipping in the December quarter, well above the consensus estimate of 8.8 million. AT&T pressing FCC to drop landline requirement
AT&T in an FCC commentary submission has asked the government agency to drop its requirements that it and other phone carriers must offer analog landline service. The carrier points to the sharp drop in landline use, including revenue, and that a full 80 percent of American homes use cellphones or Internet calling either alongside analog landlines or even exclusively. Only the remaining 20 percent uses just a conventional phone line and is likely to see its share shrink in the future, AT&T says.

New OnLive Cloud gaming company levels playing field for games on PCs and Macs (and iPhones?)
Steve Perlman, a former Quicktime Guru at Apple, has a very interesting startup called OnLive. The idea is simple: Cloud gaming.
You play games over the Internet and your screen acts like a dummy terminal that operates hardcore Cloud gaming rigs (or virtualized rigs) like VNC operates remote desktops. Apple cooperates in censorship of Dalai Lama apps in China
Apple is blocking several iPhone apps related to the Dalai Lama at the Chinese App Store, a company spokeswoman admits. "We continue to comply with local laws," Trudy Muller tells IDG News. "Not all apps are available in every country." The titles are notably available in most other regions. The Chinese government considers the Dalai Lama an enemy, as a result of his advocating freedom for his former homeland of Tibet. Mit Dropbox iTunes- und iPhone Bibliotheken auf mehreren Macs synchronisieren
Im Februar berichtete Sevenmac bereits einmal mit einem schönen Screencast ausführlich über den Internetdienst Dropbox, der auch noch heute MobileMe deutlich in den Schatten stellt. Dropbox ermöglicht es, mehrere Dateien zwischen verschiedenen Macs (und auch PCs) syncron zu halten. Doch auch an Rechnern, auf denen Dropbox nicht installiert wurde, lässt sich über den Browser einfach und bequem auf diese Dateien zugreifen.
Einzelne Dropbox-Ordner lassen sich auch mit anderen Personen teilen, so kann man beispielsweise die ganzen Freunde und Familie an den letzten Urlaubsbildern teilhaben lassen, ohne jedem eine mehrere Megabyte große E-Mail schicken zu müssen.

Should you be the sort of person who doesn't mind fiddling around with alpha level software, you'll definitely want to know about the BlueMaemo Bluetooth emulator. Available via the Extras-Devel repository on your N900, this app allows the device to mimic other Bluetooth gadgets, such as keyboards, mice, and yes indeedy, gaming controllers. Its developer Valério Domingos humbly points out that the purpose of connecting up to a PS3 is purely for menu navigation and easier text input, though we've no doubt a few hardcore Nokia loyalists will try using this in an action game to prove the N900's superiority. D-Link and Boxee plan to introduce an iPhone application to enable remote control of the features of the two firm’s soon-to-be-announced Boxee-powered set-top box.
D-Link will showcase the free application for the iPhone and iPod touch at CES next month, the company has confirmed. It will make the application software available through the App Store, the company has said.

Apple has seemingly bowed to Chinese government pressure, removing iPhone apps relating to the Dalai Lama and Rebiya Kadeer, the latter an exiled leader of China's Uighur minority group, from sale through the Chinese version of the App Store.
"We continue to comply with local laws," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told IDG News Service when asked about the missing apps. "Not all apps are available in every country."

Windows Mobile and Xbox Live coming together, according to Microsoft job ad
The hints were already pretty strong on this one, but now Microsoft has come right out and said it, albeit in a job posting -- the Xbox Live gaming platform is extending beyond the console and specifically onto WinMo phones. Seeking a Principal Program Manager who would be responsible for bringing "Xbox Live enabled games to Windows Mobile," Redmond is particularly interested in "avatar integration, social interaction, and multi-screen experiences." That leaves an awful lot of room for imagination as to how the two modes of gaming will complement each other, but at least we now (sort of) know that it's going to happen.

Gizmodo haben ein paar geleakte Picts von der Kaufseite des Google Phones Nexus One zugespielt bekommen. Demnach wird es in den USA auf zwei Wegen erhältlich sein: ohne Vertrag für 529,99 Dollar, mit Zweijahresvertrag bei T-Mobile für 179,99 Dollar. Wenn man den Vertrag innerhalb der ersten 120 Tage kündigen will, muss man Google 350 Dollar zahlen, oder das Nexus zurückschicken. Ausserdem kann man es gravieren lassen, was aber die Rückgabe ausschliesst. Student? New MacBook is now only $728 from Apple Store
As we Tweeted earlier today, Apple has slashed its price of new base model MacBooks to a record low price: only $728. That is $271 off of retail and even $200 off of Amazon's price. To get that price, Click here and visit the 'Education Store' link on the left.

8GB iPhone 3GS rumors pick up again with German 'sighting'
This wouldn't be rocket science to fake but a German forum poster says he got ahold of an 8GB iPhone with a 3GS on the label. While the iPhone insed was only a refurbished 3G, it would indicate that the label was made for an 8GB iPhone 3GS. The obvious question is: Will Apple silently or otherwise replace current iPhone 3G models with faster 3GS?
Also, a German retailer seems to be advertising an 8GB iPhone 3GS.

Bei der Zeitungsanzeige für ein iPhone 3GS mit 8GB Speicher, die wir kürzlich in den News hatten, handelte es sich ja ganz offensichtlich um eine Panne. Dass Apple allerdings versehentlich Kartons bzw. die Labels darauf mit einer fehlerhaften Beschriftung versieht, ist wohl eher auszuschließen.

It's true: there's nothing particularly extraordinary about LG's newest external hard drive, but it's the design here that has managed to catch our eyes. Available in black or white and with 1TB, 1.5TB or 2TB of storage within, these stylish 3.5-inch USB drives are slated to ship next month in South Korea. HP 210 netbook forgets announcement in lieu of support pages, retail listings
Uh oh, looks like HP has confused its product release order of operations. Without even a hint of an official announcement, the HP 210 netbook has appeared in two quadrants of the internet: retail and troubleshooting. An alleged slip of documents tonight hints that Google's Nexus One will still cling to a traditional phone model and could actually be more expensive than its rivals in the long run. Allegedly leaked Nexus One purchase page answers, raises questions
So apparently the cats over at Gizmodo have gotten their hands on leaked pics of the Nexus One's landing and purchase page. First, the meat. According to the pages, the phone will be available in two ways: as a $529.99 unsubsidized and unlocked device, and as a $179.99 T-Mobile device locked to a two year contract. Sound familiar? It should, because it's exactly the same story as every other phone available on the market right now. Additionally, the pics seem to suggest that there will only be one plan available should you get the device on contract -- 500 minutes of talk time, unlimited text, data, and mobile to mobile for $79.99. Fulton Innovation shows off mid-range eCoupled wireless power
Fulton Innovation has made some fairly impressive demonstrations of its eCoupled wireless power technology (along with a few less than impressive ones), but most of those have left little space between the power source and the device being powered. Pine Trail-based Samsung N220 netbook surfaces in France
Samsung's upcoming Pine Trail-equipped N220 netbook temporarily surfaced on the website of a French retailer, although the listing was quickly removed. Garmin spits out new handheld, touchscreen GPS devices
If you're the outdoorsy, adventurous type, this will no doubt be of interest to you. Garmin's just outed two new touchscreen, handheld GPS devices -- the Oregon 450t and 450. These mid-range devices both boast 3-inch displays, weigh in at in 6.8 ounces, and supposedly get around 16 hours of battery life on their two AA batteries. They also have 850MB of internal storage, microSD card slots, and can store up to 2,000 waypoints, 200 routes, 5,000 caches and a track log of 10,000 points and 200 saved tracks -- good news for avid hikers, no doubt. iPhone already 4th most popular phone make in France
The iPhone is already the fourth most popular phone make in France with just two years on shelves, according to data from GfK. Estimates from the analyst group say Apple will have shipped between 1.8 million and 2 million iPhones to France by the end of the year, or 8.5 percent of all phones delivered to the country. It would be eclipsed only Samsung, Nokia and LG, all three of whom are more established and sell many more models.

Samsung's Pinetrail-boasting N220 netbook spied in France
We've been seeing a fair amount of netbooks equipped with Intel's Pinetrail processors since they were announced early last week, and it looks like we're going to be seeing at least one from Samsung in the very near future. This one -- the N220 -- was just spotted in France. The 10.1-incher packs (as you'd expect) an Atom N450 CPU, GMA 3150 graphics, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth, plus a webcam and a 6 cell battery which should supposedly get around eleven and a half hours of battery life.
