Microsoft sells 60m copies of Windows 7, gets record revenue
Microsoft this afternoon claimed its best-ever quarter for revenue courtesy of Windows 7. The company's revenue jumped 14 percent year-over-year to just over $19.02 billion owing directly to selling 60 million copies of the new OS release and helped it bounce back from three consecutive drops in revenue during the other quarters of 2009. Its net income also jumped 60 percent versus late 2008 to top $6.66 billion.

Alienware's M11x netbook gets a base price: $799
Whoa, Nelly! We learned back at CES that Alienware's pretty-much-a-netbook would launch in the Spring for less than a grand, but now we know precisely what the base price will be: $799. The iPad has been disassembled
While waiting for the iPad, we have a preview of the assembly: here are two photographs that one of our contacts forwarded to us direct from China.
The frame of the iPad is shown, onto which the remainder of the device is grafted including the glass of the screen that will be glued as on the iPhone. We should quickly have photographs of the other spare parts which will be sold by these factories for the official after-sales service.

Motorola will 'broaden the scope' of Blur, sell a phone through Google this year
Earnings calls tend to be about as exciting as a stale piece of white bread, but every once in a while something juicy falls through -- and morsels are filtering out of the earnings call that Motorola held this morning. Here are the biggies:

Researchers aim to give surgeons 3D maps, directions of human body
While a GPS-style "navigation system" for surgeons may not seem like the best idea to anyone that's ever been led astray by their dash-mounted co-pilot, it apparently seemed like a good enough idea for a group of researchers at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. While they do stretch the metaphor a bit, the group's TLEMsafe system does provide surgeons with a complete 3D map of the lower body, which can actually be personalized for each individual patient, giving surgeons a reference and means to practice before any actual surgery takes place -- and, yes, even an "automated navigation system" during surgery. LaCie upgrades pro-grade Quadra external drives
Storage drive maker LaCie has began catering to the enterprise market this week by announcing its Enterprise Class range of products. The lineup includes the 4big, d2 and the 2big Quadra Enterprise Class drives, all sporting different form factors. Each device in these new product lines sports SATA hard drives and features 128-bit AES hardware encryption for securing data. There is also hardware RAID support along with hot-swap capabilities.

Big in Japan, Firemint announce early iPad apps
Two developers, Big in Japan and Firemint, have each announced they will be redesigning current iPhone/iPod touch applications for use on the Apple iPad. Big in Japan is focusing on a new version of ShopSavvy, a barcode scanning app that helps find the best prices on products. The upgraded program will carry all of the original features, with the addition of features like video product reviews and side-by-side comparisons of scanned products.

Apples Marketingabteilung hat schon wesentlich knackiger getextet, aber immerhin hat es das iPad jetzt auch auf die Startseite von Apple Deutschland geschafft. Hintendran ist man noch fleißig am übersetzen: Die meisten Detailseiten liegen weiterhin nur auf Englisch vor, aber das sollte sich in absehbarer Zeit geben. Wie eins weiter unten vorweg genommen fehlen die iBooks bislang in der Beschreibung, dafür gibt's den Verkaufsstart jetzt grau auf weiß: "Wi-Fi-Modelle erhältlich ab Ende März. 3G-Modelle erhältlich ab April."

Adobe attacks iPad over Flash, ePub book standard
Adobe has taken to criticizing the iPad through one of its blog entries, calling the device's standards support inadequate. The company notes that two standards it has been involved with -- PDF and ePub -- were prominently displayed in Wednesday's iPad publicity event. Apple uses a form of ePub in iBooks, a combination e-reader and online bookstore. The app may theoretically support e-books bought from other stores.

iBook Store zum Launch des iPad nur in den USA verfügbar
Unter anderem Engagdet weißt heute darauf hin, dass der iBook Store unter Umständen ausschließlich in den USA und Australien zum Launch des gestern enthüllten Apple iPad verfügbar sein wird. Bis vor wenigen Stunden war die deutsche Apple-Website noch nicht auf dem neusten Stand. Nun ist unter anderem auch in der beiliegenden Pressemitteilung vermerkt:„Der iBookstore wird in den USA zum Launch verfügbar sein.“Nachdem noch letzte Woche kurzfristig Gerüchte um die Verhandlungen mit US-Verlagen die Runde machten, ging man schon davon aus, dass sich der Launch in Europa unter anderem deswegen verzögern könnte. Korea's SKT suffers rare profit drop without iPhone
Central Korean carrier SK Telecom on Thursday surprised the financial community by reporting a rare drop in profit already being attributed to its lack of the iPhone. Its net income was still healthy but dropped 7.2 percent to the equivalent of about $210.1 million, the first drop of any kind in the past nine months. Officials at SKT blamed the reduced numbers on extra spending for marketing and other promo deals to keep customers from defecting to rivals KT or LG Telecom.

Foxconn readying Wi-Fi version of iPhone for China Unicom?

Apple and Fujitsu inevitably caught up in iPad trademark dispute
Well, here we go again. Apple might have stolen all the headlines yesterday with the iPad, but as we've already noted, that name has been in dispute since September -- and it doesn't look like Fujitsu, which has been selling its own iPad since 2002, is going to back down. Microsoft plans two analyst calls, press event at MWC
Microsoft plans not one but two talks with analysts around Mobile World Congress, the company has revealed in a low-profile fiscal schedule update. In addition to a press conference, the company will open the Barcelona show with a call on the 15th through its Mobile Communications senior VP Andy Lees and will have a Windows Mobile-oriented call a few days after show's end, on the 22nd. Last year, the company had no calls of its own and left its press conference as the only formal event.

Review: iVideoCamera for iPhone

More iPad shortcomings: no T-Mobile, no widescreen
The first-generation iPad has a variety of gaps in its hardware and software, observers note. Aside from lacking enterprise features, the tablet is also incompatible with T-Mobile, the only other GSM-based carrier in the US after AT&T. The iPad supports 850, 1,900 and 2,100MHz bands, which while compatible with many worldwide networks excludes T-Mobile's 1,700MHz band. For the same reason, the device does not support Canada's Wind Mobile.

IBM opens up graphene bandgap, edges closer to commercialization
Graphene transistors have long been touted as the next big thing to deliver a true leap in electronics of all sorts, but there's been a few considerable limitations holding them back from fully replacing silicon. IBM now says it's managed to overcome one of the biggest hurdles, however, and has announced that it's been able to open a "bandgap" for graphene field-effect transistors (or FETs). As EETimes reports, that's important because while graphene does have a higher carrier mobility than silicon, it doesn't have a natural bandgap, which has so far kept the on-off ratio of graphene transistors far lower than their silicon counterparts. McGraw-Hill denies having spoiled iPad launch
McGraw-Hill today backtracked and denied it had spoiled the iPad release through its own CEO. The textbook publisher says that Terry McGraw's "speculative comments" in a CNBC interview were a reflection of what he had said in a fiscal results call earlier the same day. Corporate communications VP Steven Weiss claimed to All Things D that McGraw-Hill wasn't involved in talks with Apple and thus had nothing to leak.

SDK 3.2: Programmieren fürs iPad
Mit dem iPhone SDK 3.2 stellt Apple eine Entwicklungsumgebung für iPad-Applikationen bereit. Der Name des Softwarepakets ist von daher etwas missverständlich, dass es für das iPhone und den iPod touch keine Systemversion 3.2 geben wird - diese bleibt ausschließlich dem iPad vorbehalten. Unabhängig davon lassen sich damit natürlich Anwendungen für die kleinen Geschwister des iPad entwickeln.
Für 79 Euro Jahresgebühr wird man vollwertiges Mitglied im Apple-Entwicklerprogramm und erhält damit nicht nur die Werkzeuge, um Anwendungen zu erstellen, sondern kann diese dann auch im App Store veröffentlichen. Neben dem SDK bietet Apple aktuell diverse hilfreiche Dokumente sowie Code-Beispiele und einen iPad Simulator zum Downlaod an.

Japan-based Eizo has introduced a new professional-grade 30-inch display, the ColorEdge CG303W. It sports a 2560x1600 resolution and a 178-degree vertical and horizontal viewing angle. As the monitor is meant for professional use, it covers 98 percent of the Adobe RGB color gamut. Its gamma adjustments are set by individual workers at the factory before the monitor is shipped out, and end-users can calibrate it themselves thanks to the included ColorNavigator software.

Projectiondesign's Remote Light Source projector puts the lamp in a cool, faraway place
If you're gonna dedicate your life and livelihood to projectors, you'd better be able to deliver something beyond the same old, same old. That said, Projectiondesign -- who's offered up devices for "harsh environments" and 3D in the past -- has clearly outdone itself with the FR12 Remote Light Source (RLS) projector. iPad-Buchladen: iBooks zunächst nur in den USA
Elektronische Bücher aus Apples gestern angekündigten Online-Buchladen iBook Store wird es zum Verkaufsstart des iPad nur in den USA geben. Eigentlich keine Überraschung, aber mit der Aktualisierung der internationalen Apple-Webseiten wird dies nun offiziell bestätigt. Auf den Apple-Onlineauftritten in Australien und Neuseeland findet sich zum Thema iBooks lediglich der kleine Vermerk "iBooks available in the U.S. only". Die deutsche Webseite wurde bislang noch nicht aktualisiert.
Die Gründe für den zunächst eingeschränkten Verkauf muss man vermutlich in erster Linie im Umfeld der meist komplizierten Lizenzverhandlungen mit den Rechteinhabern suchen, möglicherweise spielt zudem auchder Lokaliserungsprozess eine Rolle.

AT&T says it's 'closing the gap' on dropped calls
AT&T spent a good bit of its earnings call today talking about its network -- not too surprising, really, considering the cozy relationship between dropped calls, subscriber count, and profit. Cypress demos 14-inch TrueTouch capacitive multitouch screen
How big can tablets get? Pretty big, according to the folks at Cypress Semiconductor, who say their new new TrueTouch technology can be applied to capacitive screens ranging from seven to seventeen inches, all of which will have full multitouch support. To drive that point home, the company has now shown off a 14-inch "tablet-sized" prototype screen, which is able to recognize unlimited finger touches, and could potentially also find its way into laptops or convertible tablets (it's already Windows 7 certified). Of course, there's no word on any actual products using the screens just yet, but you can get an idea of what might be in store by checking out the video after the break.

Motorola files another small profit in fourth quarter
Moto appears to be continuing its long, arduous road toward recovery on news of its financial results for the fourth quarter of '09 -- or, at the very least, it's not losing any ground. Overall, the company posted a meager profit of $142 million for the quarter on revenue of $5.723 billion, $14 million better than a quarter prior and a staggering $3.799 billion better than the same quarter a year ago. Motorola working on a Google-branded phone
Motorola during a call to discuss it latest quarterly results confirmed that it will make a Google-badged phone. Chief executive Sanjay Jha told those on the call that 20 smartphones are on tap for the year and that one of them will be a "direct to consumer device with Google," much like HTC's Nexus One. He didn't provide details of the phone or a schedule for when it ships.

AT&T activated 3.1 million iPhones last quarter, 1 million non-phones
While Verizon suffers a bit on paper, primarily thanks to a spendy Alltel merger, AT&T has some pretty good news to report on the "money" front. AT&T's $3 billion in earnings are up 26% over the year ago quarter, and particularly hot on the wireless front with 3.1 million iPhone activations, 2.7 million new wireless customers, and 1 million non-phone devices like e-book readers. Laut einer Regulierungsverfügung der Bundesnetzagentur muss die Deutsche Telekom AG die sogenannte Betreiberauswahl auch bei neuen All-IP-Anschlüssen anbieten. Damit sind Call-by-Call und Preselection auch bei All-IP-Anschlüssen möglich. Dies gilt auch für die mit der DTAG verbundenen Unternehmen Congstar und T-Systems. Financial analysts weigh in on iPad announcement
Several financial analysts have issued new comments following Apple's debut of the iPad. A recurring theme is that the tablet is unexpectedly cheap, with a base price of $499 for a 16GB, Wi-Fi-only model. Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros. points out that the iPad touchscreen alone may cost Apple about $100, meaning that the company may be "convincing suppliers to invest in new markets," consequentially pushing down component prices.

AT&T: "good read" on iPad, major 3G updates in 90 days
AT&T has already factored in the iPad to its 3G network upgrade strategies for the year, the carrier said during its quarterly results call for the fall. It said it has a "good read" on the iPad's usage characteristics before it was announced and that many of its 2010 network plans factor the tablet into capacity. It expects usage to hover between the iPhone and other devices as it's much more likely to sit on Wi-Fi.

MacNN has a report this morning stating that Apple will hold an internal meeting today to discuss the features, purpose, and plan for the iPad and where it fits into the company's strategic plans, according to "several sources".
A similar meeting was held shortly after the launch of the iPhone in 2007 when Steve Jobs fielded questions from employees. Die kanadische Firma Deanmark hat ein Konzept, das schon lange virulent ist, zu einem Produkt gemacht, das auf den ersten Blick alltagstauglich solide scheint: Die AirMouse ersetzt die klassische Schreibtischmaus durch Sensorpunkte, die an der Hand befestigt werden, womit man bei den gewohnten Mausbewegungen bleiben kann, nur eben ohne Maus. Der Wechsel in den Tastaturmodus erfolgt automatisch auf Basis der Handstellung und soll natürlich superintuitiv sein. Nicht zuletzt soll die Umschnallmaus auch mit Sehnenleiden aufgrund exzessiver Klickerei Schluss machen. MSI to ship 10-inch Tegra tablet in late 2010
Computer and portable electronics maker MSI will launch its tablet PC in the second half of the year with an NVIDIA Tegra chip, the company's sales director Sambora Chen on Thursday. iPad for Europe lags US, 3G seeks FCC approval
As expected, the iPad won’t necessarily ship in the European and international markets at the same time as it reaches the US.
Apple has also confirmed iBooks won't be available at launch in any country other than the US. This suggests Apple is discussing licensing deals with book publishers in each country.
International pricing on the product also remains unknown. “International pricing and worldwide availability will be announced at a later date,” the company said, once again suggesting a staggered release schedule.

We wouldn't rate the ability to tune FM radio highly on our wishlist of missing features on Motorola's CLIQ, but nontheless an Android tweaker by the name of Eugene has figured out how to deliver it. The necessary receiving hardware for pulling down the Weekly Top 40 was actually there all the time, Eugene just needed some binary files -- and to believe. Once he believed hard enough, clapped his hands, and copied over those files, presto he was groovin'. He hasn't released a working version of his tweak to the world just yet, but we presume that will be coming soon enough.

Qualcomm verzeichnet Umsatz- und Gewinnsteigerung
Qualcomm hat die Geschäftszahlen für sein erstes Fiskalquartal 2010 (bis 31. Dezember) veröffentlicht. Daraus geht hervor, dass das Unternehmen seinen Nettogewinn gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs um 147 Prozent von 341 Millionen Dollar (243,5 Millionen Euro) auf 841 Millionen Dollar (600,7 Millionen Euro) steigern konnte. Sony to shadow Apple store strategy in Japan
Sony this week outlined a plan to fight back against Apple by opening its own flagship retail stores. Starting with Sony Store Nagoya, the stores will imitate the multi-floor design of Apple flagships like Ginza and use large, spacious display areas divided by category. The first floor of the Nagoya store will focus on portable devices like Cyber-shot and Handycam cameras, the PSP, Sony-Ericsson phones, Walkman players and VAIO PCs; a second floor will focus on home theater equipment such as Blu-ray players and TVs.

Is Adobe Flash Becoming Inexorably Irrelevant?
While the iPhone market share is growing at a steady state, and the iPad success seems to be already on track, we could question the impact of those new terminals on Adobe Flash. Indeed, the iPhone OS does not support flash (for marketing reasons as well as hardware as it drains a lot of resources), and the growing success of HTML v5.0 is becoming a true alternative to Flash. The management of video tags on webpage is not fully defined in HTML v5, one would need a video player, but integration of QuickTime as a true alternative, and the choice of Apple.
Mac-dedicated websites could not really be Flash-based, especially if we consider that 5% of our readers are using iPhone/iPod touch. If we had to refresh our website today (we are still working on the new one initiated months ago), we could not choose Flash as the basement of it. AT&T activates 3.1 million iPhones in fall
AT&T this morning shared in the results news and said it had one of its best fall quarters in recent memory. In late 2009, the company added 2.7 million new cellular customers and says it activated a total 3.1 million iPhones; the totals are the second-best in its history both for total additions as well as iPhone activations, falling just short of the record 3.2 million Apple devices from the summer. It now has a total of 85.1 million customers and grew faster than Verizon, closing the gap between the two by 500,000 subscribers.

Adobe zeigt sich wegen fehlender Flash-Unterstützung vom iPad enttäuscht

Nokia smartphone share jumps back to 40%
Nokia this morning touted a sharp turnaround in its smartphone share for the last quarter of 2009. It shipped about 20.8 million of the devices in the fall versus just 16.4 million in the summer. With an estimated 52.4 million smartphones shipped in the entire smartphone market compared to 47 million, Nokia estimates that it has jumped back from a recent low of 35 percent share in the summer to 40 percent by the end of last year.

Wir hatten uns von Apple Deutschland ein paar harte Fakten zum iPad versprochen, die lokalisierte Pressemeldung aber, könnt ihr lesen nach dem Break, schweigt sich professionell aus. Wir haben für Deutschland keine bestätigten Preise, lediglich die Verfügbarkeit des WiFi-Modells wird für Ende März bestätigt. Nokia grows profits and smartphone share in Q4
Pretty good news for Nokia today as it announces its Q4 results. Net income jumped 65% to €948 million (on €12 billion in sales) or 26 eurocents per share, from €576 million euros, or 15 eurocents a share, earned in Q4 2008. That handily beat the consensus forecast of 19 eurocents per share. Importantly, Nokia grew its smartphone (or "converged devices" in Nokia parlance) marketshare to a healthy 40%, up from %35 just last quarter. Looking forward, Nokia cautioned that it expects its adjusted operating margin in Devices & Services in Q1 2010 will be at the low end of its 12% to 14% target. That gives us a pretty good indication of Apple's plans for a global launch: same "late March" ship for Wi-Fi only models and April for 3G models (carrier yet to be announced). Kazaa-Nutzerin lehnt 25.000-Dollar-Vergleich der Musikindustrie ab
Nur wenige Tage nachdem ein Bundesgericht den Schadenersatz, den die Kazaa-Nutzerin Jammie Thomas-Rasset an die Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) zahlen muss, auf 54.000 Dollar reduziert hat, hat der Musikverband einen Vorschlag für einen Vergleich vorgelegt. Sollte Thomas-Rasset auf die Aufhebung des ursprünglichen Urteils verzichten, das eine Entschädigung von 1,92 Millionen Dollar vorsieht, müsse sie nur noch einen Schadenersatz in Höhe von 25.000 Dollar leisten. iPad: 3G-Funktion ohne Providerbindung
Die Aussage während der Präsentation des iPad war klar und deutlich: Die 3G-Variante des iPad kommt ohne SIM-Lock und Providerbindung auf den Markt.
Wir gehen zwar davon aus, dass Apple ähnlich wie in den USA mit AT&T in Deutschland zusammen mit T-Mobile einen speziellen Datentarif für das neue Gerät anbieten wird, grundsätzlich soll sich aber jede beliebige Micro-SIM-Karte verwenden lassen. Somit steht es also allen Mobilfunkanbietern frei, eigene Tarife für das iPad anzubieten bzw. die Nutzung von vorhandenen Datentarifen durch Bereitstellen des neuen Kartentyps zu ermöglichen.
Ein weiteres interessantes Detail: Steve Jobs hat bei der Ankündigung darauf hingewiesen, dass es keine Einschränkungen über die Landesgrenzen hinweg gibt, sondern sich ein iPad aus den USA problemlos mit der SIM-Karte eines internationalen Anbieters betreiben lässt. LG Electronics erzielt Rekordergebnis im vierten Quartal
LG Electronics hat den höchsten in einem vierten Quartal erzielten Umsatz seiner Geschichte gemeldet. Archos scheint gleich eine ganze Palette neuer Produkte im Ärmel zu sein: weniger Tablet, mehr so, wie wir den Hersteller aus der vergangenen Zeit kennen. Fangen wir mal klein an: Der Archos Key ist mit 20 Euro extrem preiswert, hat 4GB Speicher und einen microSD-Slot. Archos Vision Slim ist eine Art abgespeckte Version des ersten Visions, hat auch 4GB Speicher, kostet aber schon 40 Euro. Dann wird es schon interessanter. Wir haben das erste Hands-On-Video vom iPad. Los geht's nach dem Break. Gleichzeitig bestätigen unsere US-Kollegen einige Dinge, die den ganzen gestrigen Abend schon Thema waren: kein Multitasking. Das ist bei der schnellen CPU natürlich eine Enttäuschung. Die macht nämlich einen hervorragenden Eindruck, alles lädt wahnsinnig schnell ohne Ruckeln. Laut dem Hightech-Branchenverband BITKOM wird der Verkauf von Notebooks, Netbooks und Tablet-PCs im laufenden Jahr um 11 Prozent auf 9,7 Millionen Stück steigen. Das würde einem Absatzplus von einer Million Geräten im Vergleich zum Vorjahr entsprechen - und hier sind die Auswirkungen der "iPad-Craze" sowie der neuen Android-basierenden Tablets vermutlich noch nicht ansatzweise berücksichtigt.
"Die 10-Millionen-Grenze ist bei den Notebook-Verkäufen in greifbarer Nähe", erläuterte BITKOM-Präsident Prof. Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer: "Das mobile Internet ist einer der Trends des Jahres." Gut ein Drittel - also ca. 3,5 Mio. Einheiten - der mobilen Computer sind Netbooks.

Wie angekündigt hat Apple gestern abend den iPad vorgestellt, ein als "revolutionär" ausgerufenes Tablet für mobilen Internetzugang, E-Mail, Video- bis TV-Genuß, Musikhören, Spielen, Lesen von E-Books und E-Mags und vielem mehr. Zentral steht wie schon beim iPhone ein hier allerdings 9,7 Zoll großer Touchschreen - natürlich mit Multi-Touch. Der Flachmann kommt gerade einmal auf 13,4 Millimeter Dicke und bringt nur 680 Gramm auf die Wage. iPad verfügt ab Werk über "zwölf innovative Anwendungen", die speziell für iPad entwickelt wurden, und - vielleicht am Wichtigsten - nahezu alle der über 140.000 Programme aus dem App Store können auch auf der neuen Plattform ablaufen. Intel Maintains Its Leadership as the Largest Graphical Chipset Manufacturer
While we keep talking about the battle between ATI/AMD and NVIDIA for the graphic card market, we tend to forget that Intel is leading the market with entry-level graphical chipset, a cheap solution with limited 3D performance, but high appreciated by OEM.
Jon Peddie Research group analyzed the sales of graphical processor unit for 2009. In total, 425 millions graphical chips have been sold worldwide. NVIDIA own 24% of the market, ATI/AMD almost 20% and Intel 55%. The remaining % is shared by Pro-oriented GPU manufacturer Matrox and SiS for its chipsets.
In summary, almost all hardware models dedicated to corporate feature a graphical chipset with poor 3D rendering capabilities (based on Intel GMA), helping OEM to keep price per hardware unit low. This is also true for ultra-portable notebooks and netbooks. Samsung Started Mass Production of 3D TV Display
It would have happen in a record time, while 3D TV was only a project 18 months ago, it now starts to be reality as Samsung announced the launched of mass production of its dedicated LCD display to be installed in forthcoming 3D TV models< Depending on the price, backlighting will be either based on standard technology or by LED, All panel should have a refreshed rate of 240 Hz, more than enough to avoid flickering in 3D mode. Customers will need to acquire dedicated goggles able to switch off the view of one eye than the other at 240 Hz. This is so far the best technology for providing 3D rendering and immersion.
Of course, there is a reason behind such a race between manufacturers, the first one to be on the market with a broad range of3D TV models will get a bigger part of the cake, but one will have to wait for contents to appear too.

I spent way too much time playing with the iPad today. In fact, I'm still thinking about it and here's why: The browser is better than the browser on my MacBook. It might be the best browsing experience out there. By a lot.
Not only is the browser really (MacBook Pro type) fast but it is a much more natural way of "surfing". Instead of hitting your trackpad you just point to what you want on the screen. There is no hand-eye coordination. It is the best of the iPhone's pinch/scroll/zoom/resolution independence on a sufficiently large laptop caliber display.
Make no mistake: Apple is targeting the uber-hot NetBook market with this device. What are you doing 90% of the time on a Netbook? Browsing. And it isn't even close here. The iPad is on another level in browsing. The only area where a traditional netbook shines is in typing URLs. But in the hour of playing with the iPad, I rarely found myself longing for

iPhone 3.2 SDK beta enabling VoIP over 3G?
Apple has allegedly lifted the VoIP restrictions with the latest iPhone 3.2 SDK, according to the developer iCall. The new SDK features several utilities geared for development on the new iPad platform, however it also appears to have quietly enabled VoIP communication across 3G networks. Apple lifts VoIP over 3G limitation, iCall launches
You can now make and receive VoIP calls over 3G on the iPhone (and iPad?!) according to iCall's most recent press release. Apple updated the terms of the SDK to allow VoIP calls over 3G even though some operators, like Tmobile in Germany, don't allow VoIP calls on their network. iCall also has push notifications, rounding out a pretty impressive specs list -- one that finally makes VoIP a first class citizen on the iPhone.

Developer accuses Apple of stealing UI design for iBooks
Following the iPad announcement and Apple's preview of several new apps for the tablet device, Delicious Monster developer Wil Shipley noticed an uncanny resemblance between the iBooks app and his Mac software, Delicious Library. Apple lifts VoIP over cellular restrictions in new iPhone SDK
Great news for the VoIP world: iCall, the maker of the iCall VoIP iPhone app that can catch a GSM call and flip it over to WiFi, has issued a press release saying that the new iPhone SDK allows for VoIP over 3G cellular connections. Previously such calls had to be made over WiFi, since AT&T's network (or someone well acquainted with AT&T's network) didn't think it was man enough to take the VoIP traffic. We're guessing FujiFilm planned to get official with these at or slightly before PMA next month, but a new batch of its cameras have somehow managed to leak out well beforehand, including the FinePix S2500HD, S1730, S1600 (pictured above), and JX530. All of those fall into the mid-level or "bridge camera" range, with the S2500HD filling out the high-end of the spectrum with an 18x optical zoom, mechanical image stabilization and, of course, HD video recording (720p, to be specific). Apple has published a QuickTime stream of the Wednesday keynote featuring the iPad unveiling. The new device, featuring a 9.7-inch display and Apple's own 1GHz A4 CPU, was introduced by Steve Jobs. Apple iPad's 'Micro SIM' explained
While the news of Apple's iPad having 3G wasn't exactly a surprise, the move to a new format for the SIM certainly was. The SIM -- that tiny card that holds your contact info and account information that you find in your GSM handset -- is a 15 x 25mm plastic card whereas the new Micro SIM (also known as a 3FF SIM) is a diminutive 12 x 15mm, about 52% smaller. Needless to say, it's not physically compatible with your current phone. Emotiv EPOC gets reviewed by Joystiq, proves once and for all that videogames turn your brain into mush
We don't want to ruin everything for you, but after some extensive testing by our friends over at Joystiq, it looks like the promising Emotiv EPOC needs a little more time in the thought sensing oven. In its review Joystiq points out the fragile, hard-to-handle nature of the $299 device, but more disappointingly found the thought-sensing functionality of the sensor-stuffed EPOC headgear to be a bit too random, haphazard and inaccurate to actually be enjoyable. Of course, you could blindly assume that 400 hours spent in WoW and a six digit gamerscore has somehow disqualified this Joystiqer's mind from those joys of telepathy, but before you plunk down your

Was the iPad supposed to have a camera? Evidence from the SDK suggests, perhaps
It could very well be one of the carryovers from the iPhone bit of the SDK, but according to TechCrunch, the iPad's SDK has reference to taking pictures with a built-in camera.
Was there supposed to be a camera in this model or does this have to do with the ability of the device to connect to external cameras? More importantly, will there be one built-in camera the next version?

Erste Berichte zum iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta
Nun steht das SDK 3.2 Beta, passend für das iPad, zum Download bereit. Neben dem SDK stehen auch diverse PDFs für Entwickler zur Verfügung, in denen die Änderungen am SDK betreffend des neuen Gerätes beschrieben werden.
