Looking at Samsung Note 3 with Apple-centric eyes
There's a lot to like about the Galaxy Note 3. The new phablet's got a screen the size of a baby dolphin. It offers several interaction and multitasking innovations -- I particularly like the circle-to-copy and the pull-up calculator.
Its fine-grained stylus-based input gives users a lot more control than they get using touch. It's even got multi-unit screen-expanding built in, which is cool -- even if I imagine the chances of people using this feature in real life are quite low.
In many ways, this new unit seems more like the descendant of the Palm than the iPhone, with a focus on a paper metaphor with stylus-based entry. I suspect that a lot of serious users whose workday used to focus on the Blackberry with its fine text-entry control will welcome this device.

TUAW TV Live: Samsung snarkery episode
As I write this in the early afternoon (ET) of September 4, 2013, Samsung's big event is occurring, complete with orchestra on stage, satellite link to Times Square, and the new Galaxy Note 3. Doc and I will take a few minutes to dissect today's announcements from Apple's biggest competitor, and then talk about next week's big event -- the Apple announcement on September 10 at which the next-generation iPhone is expected to be rolled out. Sure, Samsung's upstaged the kids from Cupertino with Galaxy Gear, but perhaps we'll see something new and exciting and won't have to put up with an annoying host wearing the ugliest glasses on the planet.

Adobe to offer $9.99/month Creative Cloud subscription for a limited time
Adobe announced today that, for a limited time, it will offer a $9.99 per month subscription package to Creative Cloud as a part of its Photography Program. Court rules that sale of DRM-laden songs on iTunes did not run afoul of antitrust law
The U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco this week upheld a lower court's ruling which found that Apple's operation of the iTunes Music Store did not run afoul of antitrust law.
The initial lawsuit against Apple was filed by Stacie Somers in December 2007. The suit alleged that Apple operated an illegal monopoly to the extent that songs purchased on iTunes (back when songs were encumbered with DRM) were unplayable on non-Apple devices.
In finding no wrongdoing on Apple's part, the Court of Appeals noted that Apple's $0.99 pricepoint for songs remained the same with and without DRM enabled. Note that Apple began selling DRM free songs on iTunes back in early 2009.

Smart TV Alliance now lets developers submit apps once for use on all supported TVs
The Smart TV Alliance wants apps that work across multiple platforms, but developers have so far had to submit those apps to each TV maker -- a process that can take ages. Things should speed up now that the Alliance has launched a Developer Support Program. Apple Seeds OS X 10.8.5 Build 12F36 to Developers [Mac Blog]
Apple today seeded build 12F36 of OS X 10.8.5 to developers, marking the ninth developer beta iteration of 10.8.5. The release comes several weeks after the previous OS X 10.8.5 beta, build 12F33. Apple also seeded build 12F35 of OS X 10.8.5 to employees two weeks ago. As with previous betas, the update contains no known issues and can be downloaded via Apple’s Developer page or through the software update tool of the Mac App Store. An SNES emulator disguised as a file manager hits the App Store
A simple file sharing app called Remote File Manger holds a dark secret: It can boot up and play Super Nintendo games via built-in emulation software, TouchArcade reports. The *.smc files that hold SNES games aren't actually on the list of supported file types that the app claims to be able to manage, but it certainly handles them just fine.
The most interesting thing about this particular emulator is that it allows you to play games stored in a Dropbox account, so you never have to actually move the software to your iPhone or iPad in order to play it. News: Booq reveals Complete Protection Kit case for iPhone 5C

Samsung Unveils $299 Galaxy Gear Smart Watch With One-Day Battery Life
Samsung today announced its Galaxy Gear Smartwatch, a wearable device that features a 1.63-inch 320 x 320 resolution AMOLED touchscreen, built-in speakers, and a 1.9-megapixel camera in the strap. It has an 800MHz processor, 4GB of storage, and 512MB of RAM. Samsung’s watch will support voice control with S Voice and is able to make and receive calls and video memos. Designed as a companion for the newly introduced Galaxy Note 3 and new Note 10.1, the Galaxy Gear also notifies wearers of text messages and other updates. Samsung's Galaxy Gear is only compatible with Note 3, 10.1 at launch
Samsung's making waves in the wearables category today with its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, but the device's compatibility will be surprisingly limited at launch, curtailing our excitement quite a bit. First Looks: Matrix Audio Qube 2
A sequel to its tiny Qube speaker, Matrix Audio has released the slightly larger Qube 2 ($80), which the company says is the world's smallest stereo speaker. Inside the solid aluminum chassis are two three-Watt speakers, plus a Bluetooth wireless chip. It offers up to eight hours of music playback on a charge, refueling over USB. Matrix Audio includes a charging cable that doubles as a 3.5mm audio cable, as well as a carrying bag and wrist strap.

Samsung stellt aktuell in Berlin nicht nur das neue Galaxy Note 3 vor, sondern auch die Galaxy Gear Smartwatch. Die vermuteten Features jedoch, die bislang durch das Netz geisterten, stimmten nicht wirklich.
Hier sind die Details. Galaxy Gear hat ein 1,63" großes Super AMOLED Display. Die Auflösung liegt bei 320x320p. Im Armband ist in der Tat eine Kamera eingebaut. Sie kann Videos von zehn Sekunden Länge aufnehmen und verfügt über einen 1,9-Megapixel-BSI-Sensor.
Die Galaxy Gear unterstützt nicht nur Samsung-Apps, sondern auch die von Drittanbietern. Über 70 Partner sollen zum Launch Ende September am Start sein: Evernote, Path, RunKeeper und eBay sind nur einige Beispiele.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 makes official debut with faux-leather back, available September 25th
Samsung's annual IFA presser is typically its Galaxy Note coming-out party and this year is no different. JK Shin, the Korean company's President and CEO, has just announced the line's latest addition: the Galaxy Note 3. With a renewed emphasis on how it feels in hand, Samsung has built this note with a faux-leather back, which should go a long way towards silencing critics of the company's former plastic-reliant ways. It also comes pre-loaded with Knox, the company's secure BYOD solution, support for super-fast LTE Category 4 and integration with the just announced Galaxy Gear smartwatch. A new report claims that Apple is working on a new 17-Watt power supply for a new product. The new product would require around 40% more wattage than the current iPad, but considerably less power than the 11” MacBook Air. Font created with an iPhone in a dark room
What do you get when you take a motion graphics designer, an iPhone, and a dark room, and put them together with a Canon 5D DSLR? You get a new font named "Phone Streak," created by Marcus Byrne.
To create the font, Byrne set up the camera to take time exposures as he "light painted" the air with an iPhone. He painted not only upper and lower case versions of the 26 letters of the English alphabet, but numerals and punctuation marks as well. The short video below demonstrates how different versions of some letters were captured, and also how once Byrne had settled on the shape of each letter, he actually 3D-printed the "Z" (his favorite) as art.

Jawbone today announced its third portable Bluetooth speaker, the Mini Jambox. Designed to complement the existing Jambox and the Big Jambox, the Mini Jambox is similar in size to the standard Jambox, but thin enough to slip into a pocket. New Stanford Apple Store opening this Saturday at 10AM
Apple has announced that its new Stanford store in Palo Alto will have its grand reopening this Saturday, September 7th at 10AM. The new store has been completely redesigned and features three floor-to-ceiling glass walls at its new ground-level location. ifoAppleStore tweeted the above picture of the finished design.

ASUS refreshes the original Transformer Book with Haswell, but it's still heavy (video)
We had two major gripes when we reviewed ASUS' original Transformer Book. One, it cost a lofty $1,500, even with a last-generation Ivy Bridge processor. Apple enthüllt neu gestalteten Apple Retail Store
Apple befindet sich im Endspurt für die Eröffnung des ersten Retail Stores, welcher mit einem neuen Design-Konzept gestaltet wurde. In der Nacht auf Dienstag war zum ersten Mal der neu gestaltete Apple Store im nordkalifornischen Stanford unverhüllt zu sehen. Die Front dieses neuen Apple Stores ist vollständig aus Glas, während im Innern ein steinerner Boden und die holzigen Tische das Bild dominieren. Die momentan noch leeren Tische werden wohl in den nächsten Tagen mit Produkten bestückt. Das Dach ist aus Edelstahl und hängt leicht über die Glasfront hinaus. New Video of Assembled iPad 5 Enclosure Shows Smaller iPad Mini-Inspired Design
YouTube channel Unbox Therapy has posted a new video showing what appears to be the rear shell and front panel of the next-generation iPad, with size comparisons to the current full-size iPad. The enclosure in the video is consistent with previous leaks including a set of photos last week also claiming to be of the front panel and digitizer of the next generation iPad. Court lifts injunction barring iCloud mail push notifications in Germany
Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents is reporting that a German Court this week lifted an injunction which precluded iOS users in Germany from receiving iCloud mail push notifications.
The injunction had been in place for about 18 months before being suspended this week. Recall that the patent underlying the injunction is owned and was initially asserted by Motorola back in April of 2011.
According to Mueller, once Apple posts a bond -- which effectively serves as a pre-payment in the likelihood Motorola ultimately prevails on the merits -- push notifications for affected iOS users will be enabled once again.

VMware releases Fusion 6 to support OS X Mavericks, Windows 8.1
For years now, we've been watching an ongoing tit-for-tat battle between VMware and Parallels. Both companies make virtualization apps--VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop--which let you run Windows (and other operating systems) on your Mac. Every year or so, the two companies release new versions of their apps, each trying to one-up the other. Apple Issues Invitations for September 11 Beijing Media Event as China Mobile Speculation Heightens
Following its distribution of media invitations for its September 10 iPhone event yesterday, Apple sent out a second batch of invitations to members of the Chinese media for a separate event in Beijing, according to Sina [Google Translate]. Speaking at the All Things D conference in May of 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook assuredly said that Apple was "going to double down on secrecy on products."

Google releases, then pulls Authenticator app version 2.0
Google released version 2.0 of its Authenticator app earlier today, only to pull it from the App Store as users complain that it erased existing stored data and connected accounts.
Within hours of the app's release, reviewers reported that it had erased tokens on the iPhones for apps like Dropbox, GoogleApps, Dreamhost, Twilio and Evernote. In some instances, those users found themselves locked out of their apps until they contacted support for each one.
Two-step authentication is becoming the standard for password security, and we're sure Google is working on a fix now. When it's back in the store, we'll let you know.

Apps per Swisscom-Rechnung bezahlen — Apples App Store bleibt vorerst aussen vor
Swisscom-Kunden können in verschiedenen App Stores ab sofort auch mit ihrer Mobilfunkrechnung bezahlen. Die Swisscom rühmt sich, erste Anbieterin von «Direct Carrier Billing» in der Schweiz zu sein. Man biete damit einen «innovativen und praktischen» Dienst an, mit dem «Apps, Musik, Spiele und vieles mehr» direkt via Smartphone oder Tablet bestellt und bezahlt werden können, so die Swisscom.
Zu den unterstützten App-Stores gehören der «Play Store» von Google, die «BlackBerry World» und Facebooks «App Center». Ende dieses Monats soll der Dienst zudem um Microsofts App Store, Samsung App Store sowie der «Samsung Hub» erweitert werden.

Spezifikationen für HDMI 2.0 veröffentlicht
Pünktlich zur am Freitag in Berlin startenden Internationalen Funkausstellung «IFA 2013» hat das HDMI-Forum die Spezifikationen zum neuen «HDMI 2.0» vorgestellt. Der neue HDMI-Standard wurde für die neue 4K-Auflösung — auch «Ultra HD» genannt — entwickelt. Erste Ultra-HD-Fernseher mit dem neuen HDMI-Standard dürften bereits während der IFA gezeigt werden.
HDMI 2.0 bietet eine Bandbreite von bis zu 18 Gigabit pro Sekunde. Diese Bandbreite erlaubt das Übertragen von Auflösungen mit bis zu 3840 mal 2160 Pixel («4K») — dies bei neu bis 60 Bildern pro Sekunde. Ebenfalls unterstützt werden neu bis zu 32 separate Audio-Kanäle, «dynamic auto lipsync» und weitere CEC-Extensions (Consumer Electronics Control).

Video: Gehäuse des kommenden iPad 5 aufgetaucht

Dass das iPad 5 an das Design des iPad mini anschließen würde, wurde bereits einige Male behauptet. Nun gibt es die Gewissheit. Bei Unbox Therapy ist ein iPad 5-Gehäuse aufgetaucht und siehe da, der Rahmen ist schmaler, kantiger und in der Tat ein bisschen mini-artiger. Noch immer ist nicht ganz klar, wann das neue iPad vorgestellt wird. Bislang geht man davon aus, dass am 10. September Apple wohl nur iPhones präsentieren wird und für das iPad ein gesondertes Event stattfinden soll. Ein Termin dafür ist aber bis jetzt noch nicht bekannt. Neues Apple TV am 10. September?
Die US-Plattform «Panjiva» hat in den letzten Tagen und Wochen Frachtdaten des «U.S. Department of Homeland Security» ausgewertet, welche im Zusammenhang mit Apple stehen. Die US-Behörden haben dabei Lieferungen registriert, welche darauf hindeuten, dass Apple am 10. September nicht nur ein neues iPhone, sondern auch eine neue Version von Apple TV auf den Markt bringen könnte.
Am 11. und 25. August erreichte ein Paket des chinesischen Zulieferers «BYD Precision Manufacture» Apple, welches als «Set Top Box with Communication Function» deklariert war. Zudem erreichte am 18. August ein Paket eine Apple-Niederlassung in den USA, welches mit «Set Top Boxes» deklariert war. Allerdings gibt es von «Panjiva» keine Angaben über die Grösse des Pakets.

Apple verteilt siebte Beta von OS X Mavericks
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute eine siebte Vorabversion vom kommenden OS X 10.9 Mavericks an registrierte Entwickler verteilt (Build: 13A569). Entwickler können die neue Beta-Version über das Entwickler-Portal oder über Geräte mit der früheren Beta laden und installieren. Ebenfalls verfügbar wurde eine neue Vorabersion von Safari 6.1 für OS X Mountain Lion und OS X Lion, Apple Remote Desktop 3.7 und Xcode 5.
OS X Mavericks und iOS 7 wurden von Apple anlässlich der WWDC Mitte Juni erstmals gezeigt. Beide Systeme wurden für «Herbst 2013» angekündigt. Wann OS X Mavericks genau veröffentlicht wird, ist deshalb noch nicht bekannt — wahrscheinlich wird das neue System aber diesen oder nächsten Monat veröffentlicht.

Mysterious 'Set Top Box' Shipment Records Hint at Refreshed Apple TV Coming Soon
Apple might be planning to unveil an upgraded Apple TV or similar television-related product at its upcoming September 10 iPhone event, according to global trade intelligence platform Panjiva (via GigaOM). The company has shared three bills of lading from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that show Apple accepted three shipments labeled as "Set Top Boxes" during the month of August from one of its suppliers, BYD Precision Manufacture in Shenzhen, China.On August 25th, Apple received a shipment described as "Set Top Box with Communication Function" from BYD Precision Manufacture in Shenzhen, China. Apple seeds OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 7
Apple is moving steadily forward on OS X Mavericks, releasing the Preview 7 version to developers today. The release includes a few extra wallpapers and a link to a new OS X Mavericks page that is not fully live, yet. There are also a handful of bug fixes that are detailed in the release notes posted by 9to5 Mac.
The latest Mavericks preview can be downloaded from the Mac App Store as a software update. Registered OS X developers can also download the preview from Apple's Developer Center.

The spiritual successor to Mega Man is Mighty No. 9, and it's coming to Mac
Over the long holiday weekend, former Capcom game developer and father of the Mega Man franchise, Keiji Inafune, launched a Kickstarter campaign for his next game. It's called Mighty No. 9, and in the roughly 48 hours that has passed since the crowd funding began it has raised over $1.35 million USD. The game's original goal amount was $900,000, with a series of stretch goals that reach all the way to $2.5 million. Having just passed the $1.35 million goal, Mighty No. 9 is now officially coming to Mac.
You can score your own digital copy of the game -- which is schedule to launch in April 2015 (yikes) -- for a $20 contribution, though if you've got some extra cash to drop you can offer as much as $10,000. A donation of that size scores you a metric ton of bonus goodies as well as

Apple Releases OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 7
Apple has seeded the seventh Developer Preview of OS X Mavericks to developers, nearly three weeks after the release of the sixth Developer Preview. Registered developers can receive the update via the Software Update tool in the Mac App Store. OS X Mavericks, which is expected to be released this fall, includes multiple new features like a tabbed Finder, full screen dual monitor capabilities, Safari improvements, and a new Maps app.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-QX10/DSC-QX100 smartphone lenses to ship later this month
Rumors have been flying about a pair of camera lens accessories from Sony that will work with the iPhone and Android phones. Now AppleInsider is reporting that details have been leaked on the Cyber-shot DSC-QX10 (about US$250) and DSC-QX100 (about $500), both of which are set to be announced tomorrow and launched later in September.
