As the Cassini Spacecraft takes a far away earth picture, you can follow along
Earth will get a very not too close closeup today from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, now on the far side of the planet Saturn. The photo session will take place between 2:27 PM and 2:42 PDT. News: iWork for iCloud beta invites sent out to public
Apple has sent out invitations to some users for early access to its iWork for iCloud beta. Before now, only developers had access to the beta.
iWork for iCloud offers users the chance to access Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from the cloud, including creation, viewing, and editing capabilities for productivity documents. Anyone with an iCloud account can use it, and those invited to the beta can sign up at iCloud.com.

Microsoft Releases New Anti-iPad Ad Highlighting Surface Accessories
Microsoft today released another anti-iPad commercial, this time focusing on the iPad's lack of a USB port while highlighting the Surface RT's keyboard and stand. The ad once again returns to using Siri's voice to point out the iPad's shortcomings. "Oh dear, I need a little help here," says Siri as the Surface is propped up with its included kickstand. Apple's Developer Center Experiences Daylong Outage [Mac Blog]
Apple's Developer Center has been down for more than a day now, with no word from Apple on the reason behind the outage. MacRumors first began receiving reports of the downtime on July 18, at approximately 7:30 a.m. PT. Since that time, developers have been unable to access the site and cannot visit the forums or download Mac or iOS SDKs, the iOS 7 beta, or the Mavericks beta. Though the Developer Center is offline, Apple's developer site is still accessible. Apple and Samsung Still in Settlement Talks, 'No Indication' of Imminent Agreement
Apple and Samsung have been in settlement negotiations following Apple's victory in a patent lawsuit last year, according to The Wall Street Journal. This contradicts a report from last November that said Samsung was not interested in settling with Apple. Digital Music Streams Up 24% in 2013 Ahead of iTunes Radio Launch

Microsoft just can't seem to help itself. The marketing folks up in Redmond today released yet another video touting the advantages of their Surface RT over the iPad. Am Mittwoch haben wir bereits von der Preisreduzierung des Microsoft Surface berichtet. In diesem Zusammenhang vermeldeten die asiatischen Zulieferer, dass es unwahrscheinlich sei, dass sich durch diese Maßnahme die Absatzzahlen des Windows-Tablets massiv steigern würden. Oops. Laut Sonyalpharumors soll Sony eine Kamera in Planung haben, die nur aus Linse und Sensor besteht und in Verbindung mit einem Smartphone als Add-on genutzt werden soll. Die erste soll bald vorgestellt werden und mit dem 20 MP Exmor R Sensor der RX100M II kommen. Eine zweite dann später mit einem kleineren Sensor und größerem Zoom. Wir lassen uns überraschen. Android-Nutzer sollen deutlich weniger Geld für Apps ausgegeben als Besitzer von iPhone und iPad. Zu diesem Schluss kommt die Analyse-Firma Flurry, die aktuell neue Ergebnisse in ihrem Blog präsentiert. Apple acquires Canadian location data company Locationary
Apple is looking to beef up its Maps and location services by acquiring location data company Locationary. The Canadian start-up uses crowdsourcing to create a database with up-to-date location data and local business information. AllThingsD reports that Apple has acquired Locationary, a Canadian company focused on crowdsourcing location and other data on local businesses for improved accuracy.Apple has acquired the Toronto-based Locationary, a small Canadian startup, backed by Extreme Venture Partners and Plazacorp Ventures. Dieser Fall füllte die Schlagzeilen. Die 23-jährige Chinesin Ma Aliun hat während eines iPhone-Telefonats einen derart heftigen Stromschlag erlitten, dass sie kurz darauf verstarb. Das Telefon hing währenddessen an einer Aufladestation. Nun wird von der South China Morning Post und Sina News berichtet, dass es sich bei dem Aufladegerät, um ein Knockoff-Gerät gehandelt haben soll. Nicht lizenzierte Zubehörteile, könnten wie in diesem Falle mit minderwertigen Kondensatoren ausgestattet worden sein, die im schlimmsten Fall 220V direkt an das Smartphone weiterleiten. Durch die Plattform «Saturn» bietet das Unternehmen Informationen und Daten über «Point Of Interest» (POI; interessante Orte), primär örtliche Geschäfte. Die Plattform baut auf Crowdsourcing und Gamification-Prinzipien auf, d.h. die Nutzer werden aktiv dazu miteinbezogen, dass die POIs aktuell bleiben — ähnlich einem Wiki.
Laut dem Unternehmen aus Toronto sei für Karten-Anbieter wie Google oder Yelp das grösste Problem die Aktualität der Informationen. Oft enthalten POIs ungenaue und veraltete Daten. Ausserdem würden die Dienste, die hinter diesen Daten stehen — in den USA sind dies Firmen wie Axiom, Localeze und InfoUSA — meist nicht untereinander Daten abgleichen.

State, federal governments testing Apple's antitheft tech
With smartphone thefts ever on the rise, Apple introduced a new feature in iOS 7 called "Activation Lock" which prevents thieves from turning off the "Find my iPhone" feature without first entering a user's iCloud credentials. As an added security layer, iOS 7 also prevents thieves from wiping a device without first providing a user's Apple ID and password.
The goal, of course, is to make iPhones a less appealing target for criminals.

Verizon activates 7.5 M smartphones in Q2 2013, more than half were iPhones
Verizon today announced its earnings for Q2 2013. As expected, the carrier reported strong results with $5.2 billion in profit and $29.79 billion in revenue. iOS 7: «Activation Lock» wird von US-Regierung getestet
Die US-Staatsanwälte von New York und San Francisco, George Gascón und Eric Schneiderman, haben am Donnerstag einen Test durchführen lassen, mit welchem sie die Diebstahl-Sicherheitssysteme von Samsung und Apple testen wollten. Der Test gehört zur «Secure Our Smartphone»-Initiative der beiden Staatsanwälte, dank welcher sie den inflationär angestiegenen Diebstahl von Smartphones eindämmen wollen. Für den Test wurden eigens Regierungs-Experten des «Northern California Regional Intelligence Centers» beauftragt.
Man begrüsst zwar das Engagement von Apple und Samsung, um die Diebstahl-Sicherheit der Smartphones zu erhöhen, wie die beiden Staatsanwälte in einer gemeinsamen Mitteilung festhielten. Man nehme die Versprechen der Konzerne allerdings nicht beim Wort und will mit dem Test herausfinden, ob die Sicherheitsmassnahmen den gängigen Methoden der Verbrecher standhalten.

Microsoft Quartalsergebnisse: Halbwegs stabil trotz Surface Problem

Microsoft hat seine Quartalszahlen für das vierte Quartal 2013 (so zählen die das) vorgestellt und wie erwartet (ausser von manchen Stockholdern) sind die Einkünfte mit 19,90 Milliarden Dollar (20,49 im letzten) halbwegs stabil geblieben. 4,97 Milliarden sind Gewinn (6,09 zum Vergleich). 900 Millionen werden abgezogen aufgrund von "Surface RT Inventar-Umstellungen". Im Januar 2011 verschwand jedermanns Lieblings-Videoplayer aus dem Store, weil einer der Coder fand, dass das DRM aus dem App Store der GPL-Lizenz des Open Source Players wiedersprach. Chinese Woman Electrocuted by iPhone 4 Likely Used Unauthorized Charger
Ma Ailun, the 23-year-old Chinese woman who was killed via electric shock when answering a call on her iPhone last week, was most likely using an unauthorized third party charger, reports the South China Morning Post. Evernote Updates iOS App With Shortcuts, Related Notes and Skitch Support [iOS Blog]
Evernote today updated its app with new features to make it easier for users to organize their notes, including Shortcuts, related notes and Skitch integration. Shortcuts allows users to "shortcut" important or favorite notes, notebooks and tags so they're available for easy access. These Shortcuts also sync across devices and versions of Evernote so that users can access them everywhere. Previously, the app had a "Favorite" section that was limited strictly to notes. Cult TV series Firefly coming to iOS next summer as an RPG
Fans of the cult TV series Firefly, created by Buffy scribe and Avengers director Joss Whedon, will be happy to hear that an RPG of the sci-fi western will arrive on iOS next summer, according to Polygon. VLC media player returns to the App Store
After a two and a half year absence, multi-format video player VLC is set to return to iOS. The new VLC app has already gone live in some regions, but should be in all stores, including the US store, by 11PM EST. Once the app goes live, you can download it here.

Apple gets cozy with fitness experts, possibly for iWatch tips
It goes without saying that no Apple product is ever official until an Apple executive trots out on stage and actually unveils it for the eyes of the world to see. After all, if we believed everything the rumor mill tossed our way, an Apple HDTV would have shipped years ago and Apple would now own Twitter.

iPhone sales in India may not be as poor as initially reported
The Times of India yesterday, citing research data from IDC, reported that iPhone sales in India have slowed down dramatically over the past few months. The research data indicated that Apple's marketshare in the country recently dropped from 4.7% down to 2.1% amidst slumping sales. As for unit sales, the data relayed that while Apple sold 230,000 iPhones during the last quarter of 2012, the company only sold 120,000 iPhones during the first quarter of 2013.
So should Apple investors be worried? Has the iPhone lost its luster, perhaps rivaled by competing products from Samsung and pushed to the side to make room for more affordable feature phones?
