ITC rules Samsung violated Apple text-selection patent
Samsung infringed on an Apple patent via a text-selection feature on some of its devices, the US International Trade Commission has ruled. Reuters reports that the decision was actually made on March 26th, but kept confidential until yesterday, so that Apple and Samsung could redact any sensitive business content. The patent specifically describes a "method and apparatus for providing translucent images on a computer display," and is related not only to the text selection in Android's web browser but translucent buttons in the OS' Photo Gallery app.

Daily iPhone App: Slayin is an adorable microRPG
Since the App Store opened its virtual doors, we've seen a lot of "micro" versions of larger genres, including platformers and RPGs. The iPhone lends itself to smaller, quicker experiences, and so a lot of developers have boiled down some very large game styles into much smaller forms. Slayin is essentially a very boiled down fantasy role-playing game, and it's probably one of the most charming games of this type I've ever seen.
The idea is ingenious. You play as a hero who constantly moving back and forth across the screen, facing endless waves of enemies and bosses. Fisker announces steep layoffs, cuts company down to 25 percent of its workforce
Fisker Automotive has been seeing its troubles go from bad to worse, and its now announced its most drastic steps yet to keep the company afloat. In a statement released this afternoon, the company confirmed that it is making a "significant reduction" in its workforce, which it says will ultimately leave it with approximately 25 percent of its employees -- Bloomberg pegs the number of layoffs at about 160 based on its sources, down from the 200 it employed as of last week. T-Mobile carrier update for unlocked iPhones now available, bringing Visual Voicemail and LTE support
We had a pretty clear indication that a carrier update would soon be available to help bring unlocked GSM iPhones onto T-Mobile's network, and those leaks were indeed spot on. The carrier announced today that just such an update is now available, enabling Visual Voicemail and other features (included a promised battery life improvement) on all unlocked GSM iPhones running iOS 6.1, while unlocked GSM iPhone 5s will also get HD Voice and T-Mobile LTE support. Apple to change iOS 6 VPN settings in wake of VirnetX victory
A forthcoming version of iOS will change the way the OS handles VPN connections, according to a support document on Apple's website. On devices with VPN On Demand, the "Always" setting will instead behave as if it were "Establish if needed." In essence, VPN On Demand will only be established if iOS can't resolve the DNS name of a host. The new firmware is scheduled to appear sometime this month.

Aber edX, die Kollaboration zwischen Harvard und MIT, geht noch einen Schritt weiter und will ihre Software zur Erkennung und Bewertung von Arbeiten auch anderen anbieten. Künstliche Intelligenz statt Lehrern die selbst bei Essays und kurzen Antworten funktionieren soll, nicht nur bei - das wäre ein Kinderspiel - Multiple Choice Tests. Keine Frage, die Kritiker des Systems stehen schon Schlange die Qualitäten eines echten Lehrers herauszustellen. Boston Dynamics has been releasing video after video of its Petman humanoid robot performing a variety of tests, but something has always been missing: clothes. No longer. Gartner hat eine neue Statistik für die nächsten Jahre herausgegeben und rechnet mit einem weiteren Zuwachs von Android der sie bis 2017 auf 1.5 Milliarden Geräte bringt. Windows und iOS/MacOS haben dem zufolge nur geringe Zuwächse zu verzeichnen und schaffen es selbst zusammen nicht mehr da ranzukommen. Schon irgendwann 2016 soll Android über 50% der weltweit installierten Betriebsysteme dominieren. Viele Nutzer suchen ihre iOS-Apps über Google, indem sie mit der Hilfe von Schlagworten nach der passenden App suchen. TechCrunch ist diese Woche aufgefallen, dass im Moment einige iTunes-Ergebnisse erstaunlich weit unten bei den Suchergebnissen auftauchen. Suchergebnisse, die weiter unten erscheinen, werden nicht so häufig angeklickt wie Resultate auf den ersten Plätzen. Jolla has released the Software Development Kit (SDK) for its Linux-based Sailfish mobile operating system. The SDK has been made available for Mac, Windows and Linux (32-bit and 64-bit) with its release paving the way for interested developers to create native applications for Jolla's forthcoming handsets. Gezeigt wurde eine neue Oberfläche für Android, welche das «Facebook-Erlebnis» in einer neuen Art auf das Smartphone bringt. «Home» ist neben einem neuen Startbildschirm auch eine Sammlung von Apps rund um das soziale Netzwerk. Laut Zuckerberg ist es die «nächste Version von Facebook». Der Sperr- und Startbildschirm von Android wird durch «Home» durch den neuen «Cover Feed» ersetzt. In dieser neuen Ansicht wird dem Benutzer sofort alles aktuelle von Facebook — sprich seinen Freunden — gezeigt. Aus dieser Ansicht kann der Benutzer direkt Beiträge liken («Gefällt mir») und kommentieren. Keine Frage, dafür, dass es ein Launcher und Homescreen Ersatz geworden ist, sind die Funktionalitäten von Facebook Home völlig überzeugend. Die Mischung aus Messenger, Launcher und integriertem Facebook-Feed lässt einen aber doch einiges vermissen, das man an Android so mag. Die «App der Woche» im Schweizer iOS App Store heisst diese Woche: «Toca Tailor». Mit dem «Lernprogramm» können spielend Kleider entworfen und gestaltet werden. Die Universal-App kann noch bis am Donnerstag kostenlos geladen werden.
Im iOS Store wird diese Woche als «Unser Tipp» beworben wird die iPhone-App der «Neuen Zürcher Zeitung» (kostenlos).

Raumschiff: Kostenexplosion beim neuen Apple-Hauptquartier in Cupertino
Bereits im November wurde bekannt, dass sich das Eröffnungsdatum für den neuen Campus von Apple nach hinten verschieben wird. Gegenüber Bloomberg gab damals ein Apple-Sprecher zu, den geplanten Fertigstellungszeitpunkt im Jahr 2015 nicht halten zu können. Man geht bis heute von einem Fertigstellungsdatum im Jahr 2016 aus.
Wie Bloomberg nun in einem weiteren Artikel berichtet, wird es beim «Raumschiff»-Campus von Apple nicht nur zu Bauverzögerungen kommen: Auch die Kosten sind regelrecht explodiert. Fünf ungenannte Insider berichten gegenüber Bloomberg von Kostensteigerungen von über 2 Milliarden US-Dollar auf rund 5 Milliarden US-Dollar. Samsung posts early profit estimate, expects $7.7 billion earnings
South Korean manufacturer Samsung has released an early estimate for its January-March operating quarter. The company expects its operating profit to reach 8.7 trillion won ($7.7 billion), beating the average analyst forecast of 8.3 trillion won. ($7.38 billion) Sales increased to 52 trillion ($46.2 billion) won up from 45.27 trillion won ($40.2 billion)in 2012. If accurate, the figure breaks Samsung's streak of five consecutive record profits by revenue.

DevJuice: WebCode premieres, generates JavaScript+Canvas
As I've been working on a new book on iOS Quartz Drawing, I've been using PixelCut's PaintCode app pretty heavily. Today, a new PixelCut tool just hit the Mac App Store. WebCode (US$49.99) generates JavaScript+Canvas, CSS+HTML or SVG code on your behalf.
If you've used PaintCode, WebCode will feel immediately familiar. Similar tools and same panes make the new app very much like the original. Instead of generating Objective C, however, you're presented with ready-to use Web source.
The app just debuted, so I have only played with it a little bit. WebCode, I should note, supports Photoshop PSD import as part of its base features -- no in-app purchase needed.

DEA says it can't intercept iMessage chats
Apple mentioned back in 2011 that iMessage used encryption to safeguard conversations, but we've never had an exact understanding of how deep the security layer goes. Samsung's estimated profits for Q1 top $7.7 billion on the eve of the Galaxy S 4
As it's known to do, Samsung has released early estimates for its quarterly earnings and Q1 of 2013 was another good one for the company. Daily iPhone App: Badland is a gorgeous alien journey
One of my favorite things about the App Store is that it can offer some completely original and crazy ideas. Developers do have to get approval from Apple to be published, but that approval doesn't require a game to make sense or be clear, only that it works as advertised. Badland is one such product of this system. It's a wild and wacky, totally alien experience that I don't think would get published anywhere else but on a platform such as the App Store.

Bloomberg terminals now pull in real-time Twitter feeds
Now that the SEC has given companies its blessing to share business data over social media, Bloomberg has begun to pull live Twitter feeds into its market terminals, known as the Bloomberg Professional service. According to the firm, that makes it the first financial information platform to integrate real-time tweets into investment workflows. HP co-chair resigns, two others follow
Hewlett Packard Co-chairman Ray Lane has stepped down from his position at the company, and is taking two other board members with him. Lane is leaving following a narrow re-election, and G. Kennedy Thompson and John Hammergren, also both elected by a close margin are departing as well. All three are departing in part due to their roles in the Autonomy acquisition scandal that rocked the company in 2012.

iPhone marketshare continues to increase according to latest comScore reports
If you've been listening to the rumor mill lately, you might mistakenly assume that iPhone sales are plummeting. Indeed, a head-scratching and yet oft-repeated argument making the rounds these days suggests that Apple needs to behave more like Samsung if it wants to remain competitive in the smartphone market.
The cold hard data, however, paints a much different picture.
Recent data released by comScore shows that Apple's share of the smartphone market is growing while Samsung's is down ever so slightly.

Adobe backpedals on App Store royalty demands for Director 12
Adobe has backpedaled on its royalty program for App Store titles created using the company's Director 12 publishing utility. The previous licensing agreement forced developers to pay Adobe a 10-percent cut of all App Store earnings over $20,000 for apps created or published through Director 12.

Design studio creates modular multiple iPad kiosk arrays: Functional art
iPad kiosk enclosure design house nClosures has come up with a fascinating and beautiful way to attach multiple iPads in artistic kiosk arrays. One of the firm's designers, William Coburn, came up with the idea that the company could build arrays of iPads that would "mimic the form of what is being studied, developed or even conceptualized." From some initial ideas, nClosures created a modular and scalable Display Array that can be configured in a number of ways to "visually emulate specific ideas or phenomena being presented."

Alan Kay has some choice criticisms about the iPad
To call Alan Kay brilliant is an understatement.
Kay, in case you're unfamiliar with his work, is a Turing Award winner who played an integral role in the development of object oriented programming. A highly respected computer scientist, Kay worked for many years at Xerox's famed Palo Alto Research Center and also did a stint as an Apple fellow in the company's Advanced Technology Group during the 80s and 90s.
The full extent of Kay's visionary prowess can be found in a 1972 research paper he wrote titled, "A Personal Computer for Children of All Ages."

German court invalidates Apple slide-to-unlock patent
Germany's Federal Patent Court has ruled that all claims of Apple's slide-to-unlock patent are invalid as granted, according to FOSS Patents. The court has moreover ruled that none of the 14 amendments Apple has proposed can be used. The decision comes after a full-day hearing in front of five judges, led by Judge Vivian Sredl; two of the judges are said to have come from an engineering background.

DPRK propaganda site's Twitter, Flickr sites seized by Anonymous
In the latest phase of hacker collective Anonymous' attack against the bellicose North Korean regime, the Twitter and Flickr accounts associated with a North Korean propaganda site have been seized. The accounts taken over belonged to Uriminzokkiri, a web site which had 14,000 users' records stolen earlier this week by the same hacker group.

Apple files patent for app access on lockscreen
Apple has filed a patent for something I would love to see implemented in a future iOS update: Quick access to certain apps directly from the iPhone's lockscreen. Patently Apple says that the patent application outlines a system of rotating the "slide to unlock" slider on iOS' lockscreen upwards, and then providing access to a number of apps directly, without having to unlock the phone and find the apps on the home screen.
