Anomaly Korea creators tease secret game, which you can preorder now

The last time we spoke with the guys from 11 Bit Studios (right before Anomaly Warzone Korea landed), they had plenty of plans for a huge desktop game they were working on (to be available for PC, Mac, and Linux). And now, it appears they've announced the title sort of. They haven't actually said what the game is, but they have released this secret game page, that features a very short teaser trailer hinting at what they're working on. "Hinting" is about right -- there's really nothing to see, except for some troops rolling up on a weird object that seems to be al

Apple stock slide blamed on large hedge fund sales

Apple's deep stock slide during 2012 was linked to massive unloading by several hedge funds, according to documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, discovered by Reuters. Eton Park Capital Management sold the entirety of its 600,000 shares in a period spanning the third and fourth quarters. Could Apple unleash an update that breaks 3rd party unauthorized Lightning cables?

When Apple first announced that it would be replacing its old 30-pin connectors with the new, smaller Lightning standard, it took quite sometime for accessory makers to get on board. As Tesla's Musk battles the Times, we welcome auto journalists to the digital age

It's been hard to miss, this brouhaha that's been boiling over between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and The New York Times -- specifically with reporter John M. Broder. Broder published a piece over the weekend called "Stalled Out on Tesla's Electric Highway" in which he panned the Model S for inaccurate range estimates and drastically reduced range in cold weather. In fact, about the only thing he didn't hate was the tow truck driver who was ultimately dispatched to pick up he and the charge-depleted Tesla he had been driving through Connecticut. Musk, likely still stinging from an even more vitriolic 2011 takedown by Top Gear, was quick to ta

Practice Timer keeps track of how long you practice your instrument

Continuing in the theme of iOS apps that help you practice with your instrument to become a better musician, Practice Timer keeps a log of how many seconds, minutes and hours you've spent practicing. It is said that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a master of something. Practice Timer gives you a simple indication of just how far along you are. The idea is simple, and so is the app. When you start playing your instrument, the app starts a timer. When you stop, the timer stops. Start again, and the timer picks up from where you last left it. You can sometimes gauge a game console's short-term success based on its launch lineup; many of us know the pain of having to choose the least terrible game of a small bunch while we're waiting for a better selection. While we can't vouch for how the OUYA will fare for quality, Eddie at OUYA Forum has done the legwork to prove that there won't be any problems with the Android console's quantity. He's checked with both OUYA and developers to confirm that there are at least 481 games headed to the fledgling system, as of this writing. The clear majority of these are smaller indie titles that won't dampen So

Apple Releases Shorter 0.5-Meter Lightning to USB Cable, Tweaks In-Ear Headphones

Following its move to introduce a shorter Thunderbolt cable last month, Apple has made a similar move in launching a new 0.5-meter Lightning to USB cable. The new cable is half the length of the standard Lightning to USB cable and provides an option for users looking for less cable clutter in more confined spaces. Interestingly, there is no price difference between the two cable lengths, with both cables priced at $19.

Mac: Satechi Wireless Multifunction Mini Router

Although we really like Apple’s latest Apple TV-shaped Airport Express router, we can’t help but miss the prior version’s convenient, on-wall-outlet mounting concept. Accessory maker Satechi has decided to offer something similar to the original design at a really aggressive price, with the Wireless Multifunction Mini Router ($50). The 802.11b/g/n device doesn’t beat Airport Express in the looks department, but it still…

The new iPad version of Wunderlist 2 is formatted for the Retina tablet screen and is not a stretched-out version of the iPhone app. It includes all the best features of Wunderlist 2 and packages them into a UI that looks great on the iPad. Analyst: Office for iPad could be worth as much as $2.5B

Microsoft could generate as much as $2.5 billion in 2014 if it were to put out a fully-functional version of Office for the iPad, claims Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Holt. The estimate is based on an Office attach rate of 30 to 40 percent for Mac owners, versus 10 to 15 percent for Windows, although the latter may not include the stripped-down versions of Office that ship with many PCs. If 200 million iPads are sold by 2014, a 30 percent attach rate with a $60 pricetag would give Microsoft the $2.5 billion figure, even after Apple's 30 percent revenue cut.

Adobe charging 10 percent royalty on iOS games made with Director 12

Adobe recently released version 12 of Director, its interactive app creation system, and in doing so introduced the ability for those who use the app to create iOS games to publish their titles directly to the App Store. As it turns out, that potentially time-saving capability comes at a premium. 9to5Mac reports that Adobe is asking for a 10% cut of all profits for games created in Director 12 -- if they make more than US$20,000 in the App Store. Director users on Adobe's forums are upset by the move, which is outlined in the a

Christmas came very early (or very late) for employees of business networking site LinkedIn: CEO Jeff Weiner on Wednesday gave all 3,500 employees of the company their own 32GB iPad mini during the usual biweekly "All Hands" meeting. The company said later the move was a "small gesture" to thank workers for their efforts and accomplishments in gratitude for their contributions. LinkedIn grew 81 percent year-over-year in 2012 and beat Wall Street estimates in the most recent quarter.

Robert Bowling producing Breach and Clear, coming to iOS

Robert Bowling is the former "creative strategist" at Infinity Ward, the developer studio that original created the enormously popular Call of Duty series over on the major consoles. A little while ago, he left that company (after some turmoil between the founders and publisher Activision) to start up his own endeavor, called Robotoki, which is working on a game set to arrive on mobile platforms like iOS called Human Element. But apparently that's not all Bowling's up to: He's also working with a publisher named Gun on an upcoming iOS game called Breach and Clear. We don't know a lot about this one yet, but it

Australian firefighters call Apple Maps 'dangerous'

There seems to be no end to the grievances when it comes to Australia and the inaccuracy of Apple's mapping information. Case in point: The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australia's Country Fire Authority (CFA) is claiming Apple Maps is responsible for creating "potentially dangerous situations" for those using the agency's FireReady iOS app to determine the location of wildfires. The CFA contends that it was "forced" to use Apple Maps within its app, despite the fact that Google

In a statement issued to Engadget, Newell said: "We don't usually talk about personnel matters for a number of reasons. There seems to be an unusual amount of speculation about some recent changes here, so I thought I'd take the unusual step of addressing them. No, we aren't canceling any projects. Apple hit with second shareholder lawsuit over cash pile

Piling on to hedge fund manager David Einhorn's misguided lawsuit over a change Apple is seeking in order to shareholders more say on the issuance of preferred stock, a second investor has brought a similar lawsuit against the company, seeking to stop another Apple proposal from coming to a vote. Apple loses iPhone trademark in Brazil

The BBC is saying that Apple has lost the trademark for "iPhone" in Brazil, to a company that makes an Android-powered phone, of all things. Gradiente Eletronica registered the name "iPhone" in that country back in 2000, years before Apple tried to do the same thing, and so the ruling Institute of Industrial Property there has decided that Gradiente Eletronica owns the trademark, not Apple. However, things aren't as plain and simple as that. Gradiente Eletronica hadn't released a product using the iPhone name until December of 2012. And Apple still has the rights to use the name iPhone on anything outside of the smartphone realm, including on clothing, in software, and almost anywhere else. Apple is reportedly appealing the

Skype update adds "e-gifting" to Mac app

There's a new update for Mac users of Skype today. The new update brings two key features: eGifting, allowing you to send a gift of Skype credit to any of your Skype or Facebook friends on their birthday, and one-way SMS without the hassle of verifying your mobile number first. The update also resolves some previously known issues. It's possible to gift someone Skype credit through Skype's website, but the eGifting feature / reminder on birthdays is a nice addition, especially if you've connected Skype to your Facebook account, since Skype credit seems more meaningful than a generic greeting on a friend's timeline. At least with gifting Skype credit, you're likely to have a face-to-face conversation, i

LinkedIn gives all of its employees iPad minis

LinkedIn is most known for being a website that helps users get jobs, but it turns out working there is probably pretty nice as well: The CEO of the company today handed out 3,500 iPad minis, to every one of the company's employees. That's right: If you work at LinkedIn, you got an iPad mini today, as CEO Jeff Wiener (seen above) passed them out to everyone in the office. That's pretty great, and these probably won't just be used to play Angry Birds or Super Hexagon: The iPad is well-documented to help out in the workplace, and with every employee having an iPad mini, LinkedIn can now distribute documents digitally on t

This is the Modem World: Japan is not weird

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology. There's a dotted line between geekdom and Japan -- some of us call ourselves "otaku;" we follow Japanese technology companies; we look to Japanese culture as a beacon of our tech-obsessed future; we dream of visiting Tokyo. And yet we love to criticize Japanese culture, as if to say, "Well, sure, they make cool stuff, but they sure are messed up." I'm no expert on Japanese culture. While my visits to the island nation

Swipe captions across your iOS images with Swipe

Yesterday, a surprising little app crossed my desk. Swipe for iPhone and iPad (US$1.99, universal) enables you to add text and captions to your iOS photos by swiping your finger across any photo. For two bucks, it's a great idea and a nice app to do something different and useful. It offers a pleasing selection of fonts and controls as well as a wide range of sharing features. It's one of those apps where you use it and go, "Oh yeah!" The learning curve is miniscule, the design is strong, and the utility is immediate. That said, the app has room for improvement. I'd love if the app would provide a little more visual feedback about where the swipe was added. Just some sort of ant-t
