Staples is not an authorized Apple reseller (although the company does sell Apple gear in Canada), but a new rumor suggests the office supply store could soon start selling Apple gear here in the states. According to a report by 9to5 Mac, Staples was listing an Apple TV for a low US$49.99 price tag. The page, which is no longer available on Staple's website, listed the Apple TV along with a $24.99 Lightning cable under the "customers who viewed this also viewed" heading. H.265 video gets ITU approval

Web and mobile video will soon get a boost thanks to H.265, a new video codec recently approved by the ITU. H.265, known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), will deliver high-resolution video with half the bit rate of its predecessor, H.264. Google accused of tracking iPhone users, up to 10m could sue in the UK

The Guardian is reporting that Google may be hit with a slew of lawsuits over the company's clandestine monitoring of Britons who use the Safari web browser on iPhones, iPads and Macs. Google admits that it bypassed Safari security settings that blocked sites from tracking user habits through cookies. Last February, security researchers found that Google's DoubleClick ad network was storing cookies on devices even when users had chosen to block them. iOS 6.1 has been a curious update. It offers a minor handful of API upgrades for developers but otherwise has been a way for Apple to tweak internals. Apple R&D spending spiked at the end of 2012

Apple may be on the top of its game lately, but that doesn't mean the company isn't still looking forward. According to the LA Times, the company from Cupertino has jumped up its research and development spending over the last quarter, by a whopping 33 percent. According to the most recent earnings statement, Apple raised the R&D budget by $252 million to more than $1 billion, which is even higher than the 32% jump in the previous year. iOS, Android grab 92% of smartphone shipments

The smartphone market is quickly boiling down into a two-party system, so to speak, with both iOS and Android picking up a whopping 92% of smartphone shipments over the last quarter of 2012. In 2011, 32% of smartphone shipments consisted of other operating systems, like Windows Phone, RIM's Blackberry, or Symbian. But in the last year that number has shrunk, to the point where only 7% of smartphones shipping are not iOS or Android, and it seems unlikely to rise again. In the same time period, about 20% of smartphones shipped were iOS devices, as compared to 70% of devices shipped being Android. Confirmed: Apple to open Shanghai R&D center this summer

When Apple CEO Tim Cook visited China earlier this month, it's possible that part of the trip was spent wrapping up a deal to open a new research and development center there. As China Business News reports (link in Chinese), the company is a lock to open an R&D operation in Pudong, Shanghai this summer. The announcement was made by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, although Apple has yet to issue an official statement regarding its plans. Looks like Yakko, Wakko, et al. have been overlooked for yet another executive level position at their namesake corporation. Over the weekend, office supply retailer Staples had a series of mockup Apple product pages available for viewing on its e-commerce site.
