All tiered AT&T data plans now get FaceTime over cellular
AT&T announced today that it is expanding FaceTime over cellular to all tiered data plans. The news came via a posting on AT&T's Customer Blog:
When FaceTime over Cellular launched in September 2012, we explained that we wanted to roll it out gradually to ensure the service had minimal impact on the mobile experience for all of our customers.
As a result of ongoing testing, we're announcing AT&T will enable FaceTime over Cellular at no extra charge for customers with any tiered data plan using a compatible iOS device.
This means iPhone 4S customers with tiered plans will be able to make FaceTime calls over the AT&T cellular network. AT&T previously made FaceTime over Cel

Facebook extends Messenger voice calls to US
Facebook has enabled VoIP calls for US users of its iOS Messenger app, the social network tells The Verge. The option doesn't require a Messenger update; instead, people must only start a conversation with another user, tap the "i" button in the upper-right, and then hit Free Call. The person receiving the call will see a push notification.

New OS X 10.8.3 beta reaches developers
Apple is seeding a new beta of OS X 10.8.3 to developers, says AppleInsider. The build is labeled 12D54, following up on the 12D50 release posted on January 8th. Any important changes have yet to be discovered, but it should continue a trend of having no known issues while cleaning up any bugs in previous code.

News: Facebook Messenger launches free calling for US iPhone users
Facebook Messenger now offers free calling, as the feature has made its way to US iPhone users. The standalone Facebook app allows users to open a conversation with another Messenger user by opening a conversation, tapping the “i” button, and then tapping the new Free Call button. Photo Sense is a clever image editor for Mac and iOS
Most of us are acquiring loads of images on our computers and iOS devices. Many are pretty dull, spur-of-the moment photos that are taken and forgotten.
Photo Sense (US$33.99) is a nifty, automated photo editing app for OS X that and can bring forgotten photos back to life. It's great for those that don't want a high-end app's expense or steep learning curve. Photo Sense also has an iOS app, but more about that later.

Nexus 7 now available to order with T-Mobile SIM, carrier expands Nexus 4 retail availability
There's some good news today for T-Mobile customers looking to add a few more Nexus devices to their lives. The carrier announced today that the Nexus 7 tablet is now available to order with a T-Mobile SIM from the Google Play store, where it will set you back the same $299 as the regular HSPA+ model (still 32GB only). What's more, T-Mobile has also confirmed that, as expected, it's expanding retail availability for the Nexus 4. That rollout began yesterday, and the carrier says all retail locations in the US should have the tablet in-store within the "coming weeks." Facebook starts turning on free voice calls for iPhone users in the US
Earlier this month word got out that Facebook was trialing a free calling feature in Canada. We said that if those tests went well the company would expand to the US. News: Dutch court: Samsung tablets don’t infringe Apple design
A Dutch court has ruled that three Samsung Galaxy tablets do not infringe an Apple design, citing previous British court decisions. The ruling involves rounded corners on the tablets. Apple lost a tablet design infringement case in the UK and was required by law to post ads stating that Samsung did not infringe on its designs. [via

Forum roundup: MBP sleep issues and more

AT&T opens FaceTime to all tiered data plans
Following up on a silent rollout, AT&T has formally announced plans to enable FaceTime calls with any tiered data plan. The carrier previously lifted a policy restricting FaceTime to Mobile Share plans, but still required a device with a tiered plan and LTE, blocking out the iPhone 4S. "We have already begun updating our systems and processes and expect to start rolling the update out to customers on an ongoing basis beginning in the next couple of weeks," reads a blog post by AT&T's senior VP for voice and data, Mark Collins.

Touchscreen gestures turned into physical interactions
Let's say the year is 2023, and we're now interfacing with our iPhones in a totally new way. 10000000 now available on Mac via Steam
10000000 (pronounced "10 million") is a great game that arrived on iOS last year. It combines a tile-based swiping puzzle game with a fantasy-based progression system to create a very addictive mix. During the last 24 hours or so, many TUAW readers catching up on the latest Apple news have seen something similar to the warning above when they go to "page 2" of the site, which is accessed by clicking the Older Articles link at the bottom of the TUAW home page. Dutch court says Samsung Galaxy tablets don't copy iPad
Apple hasn't had a lot of success in proving that Samsung's products infringe on its designs, in Europe at least. Last year Apple lost a suit in the United Kingdom accusing Samsung's Galaxy Tab of infringing on its popular iPad design. As a result, the UK judge ruled that Apple had to advertise that Samsung did not copy Apple on its homepage at Apple.com/uk.
Now comes news that Apple has lost another case where it alleged Samsung's Galaxy tablet infringed on the iPad's design, this time in the Netherlands, according to AllThingsD

AT&T now offering FaceTime over Cellular on all tiered data plans
It's been a slow process, but AT&T is gradually making FaceTime over Cellular (Apple's video chat service) available to more people. Dutch court says Galaxy Tab doesn't infringe iPad design
Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets don't infringe on the design of the Apple iPad, a district court in The Hague has ruled. Reuters notes that the lawsuit involved the rounded corners of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, and Galaxy Tab 7.7, which Apple claimed were copying a signature trait of the iPad. "We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners and that the origins of Apple's registered design features can be found in numerous examples," reads a Samsung statement in response to the court win.

Minecraft's mobile version outsold others by volume in 2012
Minecraft creators Mojang have released stats on how the game's various platform clients (Windows/Mac, Xbox 360, and of course iOS and Android) have been selling, and the numbers have a surprise. The mobile version is outselling everything else by volume. As you can see above, Christmas sales boosted the mobile version, at least in terms of pure numbers, so that it's beating all other versions offered over the past year.

Finish for iPhone is a simple, handy task manager
Finish for iPhone ($0.99) is a task management app built by high school students Ryan Orbuch and Michael Hansen. The pair wanted a simple, mobile way to stay on top of their work. Finish is the result. After playing with it for a couple of days, I can say that it's well done. Finish looks good and uses gestures well. It's not as full-featured as some of its contemporaries, but worthwhile for those looking to corral simple tasks.

Microsoft's Play strategy brings Xbox games to Windows 8 and RT (video)
Microsoft signaled its intent to directly back Windows 8 gaming before the OS was shipping, and it's proving true to its word through a new Play program. Samsung Galaxy Tab cleared for Netherlands sales, says Dutch court
Despite Apple's attempts to get Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7, 8.9, and 10.1 banned from sale in The Netherlands (per ongoing litigation between the two companies), a Dutch court in The Hague struck down that request in a ruling today. Apple's Chinese online store adds installment purchases
The Chinese version of the online Apple store has added the ability to pay for products in installments, reports note. An order must cost between 300 yuan ($48) and 30,000 yuan ($4,800), and buyers must have a China Merchants Bank credit card. Through January 23rd, three- to 12-month installment purchases are interest-free. An 18-month payment carries 6.5 percent interest, while going up to 24 months raises the interest rate to 8.5 percent.

Temple Run 2 now available in the App Store
Uber-popular game Temple Run's surprise sequel has hit the US App Store. Released earlier today in the New Zealand App Store, Temple Run 2 builds on the success of the first Temple Run, while ratcheting up the graphics, physics and gameplay.

Google-Glass-Entwickler müssen warten, dürfen aber testen

Documents by Readdle: Free and easy content management for iPad
Readdle is a development firm that has made a name for itself with apps like Scanner Pro (US$6.99) and PDF Expert ($9.99) that make creation and markup of documents a snap. Now the company has released Documents by Readdle (free), a significant update to the earlier ReaddleDocs app that is essentially a completely new app.
The iPad app is, according to the company, about 80 percent new code. The company launched the app as an update to ReaddleDocs, as that app currently has over 230,000 existing users and this will make their transition to the new app as painless as possible.

Google: it's cool, guys, we didn't run over a donkey
Before you go hurling insults like "donkey killer" at a multinational software giant, it's probably best to get the other side of the story. In spite of visual evidence to the contrary, Google insists that it did not, in fact, run over a burro while gathering shots for Street View. Apple's Chinese online store has added the ability for customers to buy products on credit. The interest-free monthly payments allow customers to purchase items between 300 yuan (US$48 as of this writing) and 30,000 yuan ($4,800), provided they have a China Merchants Bank credit card. The "Apple will make a low-cost iPhone" rumor is turning into one of the leading tech industry memes of 2013. Just like the "Apple will make an HDTV" and "Apple will introduce a streaming music service" rumors, the "low-cost iPhone" rumor isn't exactly new; there have been rumors of an "iPhone nano" for close to five years now.

Light Blue 4 makes switch to native OS X, Windows apps
Light Blue Software has announced Light Blue 4, an upgrade of its photo business management software. The new app has been rendered fully native in versions for Mac and Windows, instead of being based on FileMaker. Coding trick automates iOS and Mac app screenshots
When working on an app, iOS developers don't just code, they also have to prep their app for the App Store submission process. One time-consuming step is gathering all the app screenshots that are needed for the App Store listing. It's not too bad if you have a single app with only four screenshots, but it can become burdensome when you have several apps and multiple languages to capture.

Dungelot is such a simple and fun idea that I'm surprised it's the first time we're seeing a game like this on the App Store. It's sort of an abstraction of the standard fantasy-based hack-and-slash dungeon adventure, with just one mechanic: To explore a square on the grid-based dungeon that you're going through, you simply tap it.
That's it -- as squares open up to you, one by one, you'll find loot, health, magic spells, and of course enemies to battle, along with a series of other surprises. All of the action is completely turn-based (though there are some minigames hidden in the depths), and just like a standard roguelike, your goal is to get down as far as you can before dying.

Apple, Amazon ordered to settle 'App Store' trademark suit
In an order filed earlier today, Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Laporte presiding over hearings for the Apple versus Amazon "app store" suit, has ordered the pair to try and hammer out an agreement before the case goes to trial. The two companies are now scheduled to meet on March 21 to come to a settlement. Apple owns the rights to the term "App Store" and "Appstore" in Europe, but a trademark on the term in the US is awaiting approval.

VP of Retail Jerry McDougal resigns from Apple, cites family
Jerry McDougal, the second-in-command of retail at Apple, has left the company. The move leaves Apple without either a leader or lieutenant in the retail segment of the business, following the ouster of the controversial John Browett in late October. As previously reported, Apple has confirmed its annual shareholder's meeting is to be held on February 27 in the auditorium located at the company's Cupertino headquarters. Prepaid debit card company Green Dot is making the next (logical?) step in its business with the launch of GoBank, a bank that exists only on the web and on your iPhone. Retail VP John McDougal leaves Cupertino
For those playing the home version of Apple's Corporate Shuffle, you may recall that John Browett was shown the door last October, leaving Apple without a hand at the retail rudder during the holiday season. We have noted they are still looking, and one of the names bandied about was Jerry McDougal, the vice president of retail.
Well, as of today it's being reported that McDougal is off the list as well. According to ifoAppleStore, he has departed Cupertino as well, in order to (say it with me) spend more time with his family.

Russian Railways levies trademark infringement against Apple
At this point, we practically expect to see a new legal charge brought against Apple every day of the week, and oftentimes that is indeed the case, but this one is particularly interesting: TechCrunch reports that Russian Railways is charging Apple with trademark infringement, seeking 2 million roubles (roughly $65,000) in damages.
The suit itself is rather vague and avoids citing exactly where Apple is allegedly in the wrong. The statement notes that Apple has infringed on Russian Railways' RZD trademark and used it in pictures on one of its digital marketplaces.
