Sprint quietly launches ZTE Flash with 12.6MP camera and vanilla(ish) Android
Sprint and ZTE decided not to hold a fancy get together to announce the Flash. Heck, there wasn't even really proper PR. Nokia announces Here, a new maps service coming to iOS
Apple's already had plenty of maps-related woes, and here comes what might be even more trouble. At an event in San Francisco, Nokia has announced a brand new maps service called Here, and in addition to releasing across Nokia's usual platforms, the service also has an iOS app that's already been submitted to Apple, and should be available soon.
Nokia has also acquired a mapping company named Earthmine, that specializes in street-level 3D mapping, so presumably it will be putting them to work on mapping out street locations

Dictionary apps try to shame supposed pirates, plan backfires
A series of Dictionary apps recently took an, um, "innovative" path to fighting software piracy, though it didn't quite work out as expected. Apple remains the most valuable US retailer in terms of sales per square foot, according to new data produced by RetailSails. Texas Instruments confirms color TI-84+ calculator is on track for a spring 2013 release
You've seen the recent rumours of a TI-84 calculator with a color screen, and now Tech Powered Math has gotten the official word from Texas Instruments that such a device is indeed coming, finally bringing the popular line of calculators out of the monochrome age. As those earlier reports have suggested, however, you'll have to wait until sometime in the spring of next year to get you hands on one, and pricing has yet to be confirmed -- the site says the MSRP "could" be in the neighborhood of $150, though. Nokia introduces Here location services for iOS, Firefox OS
Nokia has announced Here, a new attempt at bringing its mapping services, which already power its own devices and Amazon's Kindle platform, to the web, Apple's iOS platform, and Mozilla's Firefox OS. Here will come with built in offline map capabilities, voice-guided walking navigation, and public transport directions. Apple awarded design patent for iBooks page turning animation, Smart Case
When it comes to the question of how many patents Apple can possibly hold, the answer is easy: at least one more. To that end, the company has been awarded a patent on the page curling animation used in iBooks. You know, that neat way the page curls and follows your finger as you slowly leaf through your books, showing text on the opposite side of the page and even curling from the corners if you move your finger vertically. Backlit e-readers such as iPad help those with vision loss
A study presented on Sunday at the 116th annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology says that tablets with backlit screens, such as the iPad and Kindle Paperwhite, help patients with vision problems due to eye diseases to read quickly and comfortably.

Apple expands office space in Cupertino and Santa Clara
Apple is again expanding its California office space, according to the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. SugarSync 2.0 is now available as a public beta to anyone who currently uses the cloud service or is thinking about moving to the platform.
SugarSync has been redesigned across the board, from the desktop Mac app to the web app, and (soon) the iOS app will be available. At this point in time, the iOS app isn't ready to fly, but TUAW readers with Android phones will find that the beta app is available for their platform. Syncing a folder is now as easy as dragging and dropping a folder onto the SugarSync 2.0 UI, and folders can be converted from synced to cloud-only to save space on your computer. Nokia launches new multi-device, web-based location cloud service: It's Here
Nokia's revealed the next stage of its cartographic future and it's going to involve a new cloud-based service. According to RetailSails, a firm that tracks the US consumer and retail industries, Apple's retail stores are the most profitable stores per square foot out of any other US retailer. Apple wins patents on Time Machine, page-turning animations
Apple has scored several new patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office, according to AppleInsider. One of these is Consistent back up of electronic information, documenting the basic concepts behind OS X's Time Machine. The function creates incremental backups of a Mac, allowing people to restore an entire system or individual files back to earlier states. Text messaging declines for first time thanks in part to iMessage
A report from independent analyst Chetan Sharma suggests text messaging is on the decline in the US. Results from his report published on Monday show that the number of text messages sent each month by wireless customers has fallen. In the third quarter of 2012, mobile phone owners in the US sent 678 texts per month, a decline from Q2 when customers sent 696 texts monthly.
It's a small drop, but a significant one as it is the first time the number of monthly US text messages has not increased. Sharma lays the blame on alternative messaging services like Facebook and iMessage, which let people send messages outside of the carrier's text messaging service. Apple launches two new TV ads for iPad mini
On Monday, Apple launched two new TV commercials for its iPad mini. Similar in style to the "Piano" ad, the new spots compare the full-size fourth-generation iPad with the iPad mini -- with one ad showing off photos and photo editing, the other comparing the experience of reading e-books using iBooks. Each has a distinctive musical score to accompany the demonstration, with the "Photos" ad featuring a song called "Two of a Kind" by Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer.

Fender Guitars offers $200 USB guitar with IOS connection
Apple and guitar manufacturer Fender have collaborated to produce a version of the Squier Stratocaster aimed at beginning guitarists that features iOS compatibility, a USB port, and the traditional quarter-inch analog connector for $200 in time for the holiday season. The guitar includes a Type B mini-USB to 30-pin dock connector cable that is compatible with all but the most current iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models. It's that time of the year again. Meizu's just sent out invitations for the upcoming launch of its new flagship device which, according to founder Jack Wong, will be dubbed MX2. Apple corrects launch bug with Aperture 3.4.3
Apple has released an update to its pro photography program, Aperture, bringing it to version 3.4.3. The update exists to fix a single, specific problem: for some users, the program would prompt for a serial number on every launch. The update is available through Software Update for version 3.4.x running on OS X 10.7.5 and higher, or 10.8.2 and higher. The correction comes on the heels of version 3.4.2, released at the beginning of the month, which brought a number of new features to Aperture.

Report: iMessage, other text services cause drop in US SMS
For the first time in years, US text messaging was down in the third quarter of 2012, largely due to services such as iMessage. According to mobile analyst Chetan Sharma, users sent an average of 678 texts per month, down from 696 the previous quarter. While only a small change, the move reflects a shift primarily among smartphone users to services such as iMessage and Facebook Messenger as alternatives to traditional carrier-based SMS. Though many modern cell phone plans feature unlimited messaging, SMS is still a major profit driver for most carriers.

Daily iPhone App: Gizmonauts is DragonVale, but with robots
Backflip Studios' biggest hit is still Paper Toss, an early app that has you throwing a paper ball into a wastebasket, and has been downloaded over 24 million times. Makers of PaintCode open CodeAutomat service, for turning SVGs into code
I'm currently working on developing an iOS app in conjunction with a graphic designer, and because my design skills are pretty terrible, we set out to look for a solution to turning the scalable vector graphics (SVGs) he's designed into Objective-C code snippets I can insert directly in the app. There are a few different ways to do this, but it turns out that PaintCode (which Erica wrote about earlier this year) is the solution we're going with -- it's an app that will fairly easily convert scalable vector graphics into Objective-C code, which iOS can then use to draw out a user interface for a touch-based app.

Study: iPads, Kindles help users with vision loss to read
Research presented on Sunday at the 116th annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology shows that backlit tablets, such as the iPad and Kindle e-reader, help patients who suffer from vision problems due to eye diseases regain the ability to read at a comfortable level. The discovery could aid millions of people who have lowered vision because of conditions such as macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. In the study, the iPad was found to score the biggest improvement in helping readers regain a high and comfortable reading level.

DevJuice early look: Create slick framed product shots with Promotee
I normally don't cover apps too early before they're released but I couldn't wait to post about Promotee. It will shortly be going into Apple review, so expect to see it in about a month.
From the fine folks at Netwalk, Promotee lets you drop pictures into framed tableaus, enabling you to build promo images from your app's screen shots.
It's tremendously easy to use, and developer Tom Nys tells me they'll be expanding the art over time. The app currently supports most recent iOS devices, Macs and several Nexus models.

Kodak on brink of striking deal for $793 million in funding
Eastman Kodak is attempting to draw its bankruptcy saga to a close. A deal has reportedly been reached with bondholders for $793 million in loans and other debts that could conceivably extract it from bankruptcy proceedings. Apple to offer select employees 'Blue Sky' time for projects
Following in the footsteps of other tech companies like 3M and Google, Apple has decided to launch a program allowing workers to take a certain amount of time off to pursue projects and ideas outside their normal duties. The program, dubbed "Blue Sky," offers up to two weeks paid holiday in which some employees can work on their own pet projects. The intent of the program is to foster ideas that could prove to be of benefit to Apple, though a secondary purpose would likely be to help retain employees that might otherwise jump ship to other companies.

Titan supercomputer leads latest Top 500 list, newly-available Xeon Phi chips make strong debut
The supercomputer formerly known as Jaguar recently got an upgrade that was significant enough to earn it a new moniker, and it turns out that was also enough for it to claim the top stop on the latest Top 500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers. Now known as Titan, the Cray-developed supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory edged out the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Sequoia supercomputer for the number one position, reaching 17.59 Petaflop/s with the aid of almost 300,000 AMD Opteron processors and 261,632 Nvidia K20x graphics chips. Box makes a deal to add more global servers
I find it a little hard to believe that until now, Box (formerly Box.net) didn't have any servers running outside the US. But apparently that was the case, as the company has just made a deal with Equinix to host six data centers around the world, including places such as Amsterdam, Sydney and Tokyo.
Putting new servers up in those countries should help Box users. Equinix says it will boost performance up to 60% in some places. Given how big Box has become, the company just expanded free storage for its users again, I'm surprised there wasn't a plan in place. But the deal's been made, so if you're an int

There's something immediately striking about Nintendo's Wii U proprietary disc format that's hard to notice in photos -- it's got rounded edges, both outside and in. Apple remains atop list of innovative companies
For three years in a row now, Apple has landed on top of a list of most innovative companies in the world, according to consulting firm Booz and Company. The list was compiled from a survey of more than 700 companies, and Apple came out number one, with Google and 3M following close behind. "Innovative" is obviously a very subjective word in this case -- some could argue that Apple innovates on ideas originated by other people and companies, while others might argue that with a new model for each of its devices nearly every year, this award is well deserved. But either way, no one can argue that Apple is pushing forward extremely quickly, both in the field of mobile devices, and in the traditional desktop space.

If you walked into your boss's office and asked for two weeks off to work on an unspecified side project, what would their reaction be? The Wall Street Journal is reporting that if you happen to be one of a select group of Apple employees, you'd be granted the ability to do just that.
