Apple gives App Store categories their own highlights, lets niche apps have 15 minutes of fame
It's tough to find truly stellar mobile apps, no matter what platform you're running, and that's even truer when delving into categories. Apple has made a gesture towards giving more titles their moment in the sun through a low-key update to the App Store in iTunes and on iOS 6 devices. Using iPhone 5 on the UK's EE 4G LTE network
TUAW readers in the UK now have a fast new LTE network to connect to with their iPhone 5s and other devices that work with the technology. EE, a new company made up of "equal parts T-Mobile and Orange" according to our sister site Engadget, turned on its new 4G LTE network in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and parts of Southampton. Vers Inc. gave word today of the availability of a new, hand-crafted portable wireless stereo system that fits in the palm of a hand. Testing iPhone 5 connection adapters with a Volkswagen
One of the immediate concerns of many Apple fans when the company announced the iPhone 5 and the Lightning connector was how the new connector would work with iPod/iPhone integration systems that are built into many cars. CNET Senior Editor Wayne Cunningham found that the iPhone 5 worked beautifully in some cars, but had some issues with Volkswagen's Media Device Interface.
In both Chevy and Nissan vehicles, Cunningham was able to plug the USB-Lightning cable into the cars' USB ports. The integration worked exactly the way it should have, with the iPhone's music library appearing on the LCDs in the cars. I wavered back and forth on it from the day it was announced. First, it was the price. US$329 is easier to swallow than $499, but I had a perfectly good iPad 2. Samsung, Philips, LG and others reportedly set to face EU regulatory fines for CRT price fixing
Samsung SDI, Philips, LG, Technicolor, Panasonic and Toshiba are said to be facing heavy fines from the European Commission due to alleged involvement in a TV cathode-ray tube price fixing ring. According to Reuters, the fines will be announced on November 28th and can reach up to ten percent of the turnover during the period which the cartel was said to have ran. Apple tweaks App Store category page design
In a minor but potentially excellent change to the iOS version of the App Store, each app category now has its own "Featured" page, complete with a curated selection of top apps. Previously, there was just a single Featured section, and navigating to separate categories provided only a list of the best selling paid and free apps. MacStories notes that the newly-implemented category pages feature wide banners and plenty of promotional space.

iPhone 5, fifth-gen iPod touch show diagonal swiping issues
The iPhone 5 and the fifth-generation iPod touch are both showing problems with handling diagonal swipes, accounts say. While the devices should work properly with regular gestures, quick diagonals can cause response to drop off. The issue is reproducible in multiple apps, and in iOS 6, 6.0.1, and the 6.1 beta. Apple donates $2.5M to aid Hurricane Sandy victims
Apple has been making more charitable gifts since Tim Cook became CEO, and the latest organization to benefit from the company's generosity is the American Red Cross. iPhone 5 expected in China by early December
China Telecom will begin carrying the iPhone 5 by early December, chairman Wang Xiaochu tells the Wall Street Journal. The device is still awaiting final approval from Chinese wireless regulators, but Wang claims that Telecom will have the 5 on sale in early December if not earlier. Chang Xiaobing, the chairman of rival iPhone carrier China Unicom, is less committal. British Airways to support Apple Passbook
An AppleInsider reader reached out to British Airways to ask about Passbook support and a helpful representative said they're already looking into it. In particular: "Please be assured that we will get our Passbook-compatible functionality live on ba.com as soon as we can."

Global management consulting firm Booz & Co. named Apple the world's most innovative company for the third year in a row. The report notes that Apple spent less than its rivals on R&D and still trumped companies like Amazon, Google and IBM because of how it invested its money.

Benchmarks für neues Acer Iconia Tab A220 mit Tegra 3 und Jelly Bean

Auf der GLBenchmark Seite tauchen gelegentlich mal neue Geräte auf. Jetzt haben wir dort ein Acer Icona Tab A220 entdeckt, das - wie üblich - mit einer Menge an Spezifikationen kommt. Jelly Bean 4.1.2, 1280x752 Bildschirmauflösung, Quad-Core 1,3GHz Tegra CPU. Ein direkter Gegner des Nexus 7 vielleicht, falls es wirklich ein 7-Zoll Tablet ist, dann hätte Acer natürlich, wie alle, ein Preisproblem. Eine willkommene Auffrischung des A110 ist es aber allemal, sofern, und jetzt wie Warnung, das Ganze kein Fake ist.

We just finished reviewing a laptop whose screen flips inside its hinge, and now we're testing an Ultrabook with a touchscreen, along with a notebook whose screen folds all the way back. Court to consider possible juror bias in Apple v. Samsung
US District Judge Lucy Koh will consider claims of possible jury bias during the recent Apple v. Samsung lawsuit in a hearing set for December 6th, reports say. Samsung has been urging the court to look into one juror, Velvin Hogan, who it alleges hid information about a history with Seagate. Samsung says it has a "substantial strategic relationship" with Seagate, and that during jury selection Hogan didn't reveal that he had been sued by the latter company, his one-time employer. Because of the suit Hogan was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1993.

Sent to other Apple workers by CEO Tim Cook, the memo notes that the donation comes in addition to charity efforts by employees, and public money sent to the Red Cross through iTunes. AMD shutters key Linux support lab in Germany as part of company-wide layoffs
The pain from recently announced job cuts by AMD could ripple out to the Linux community, as the chipmaker has shut down a small but important Linux OS research facility in Dresden, Germany. Gedankenexperiment: Wenn ich meine Anforderungen ignoriere und das iOS mit all seinen Apps und Multimedia- und Netzwerkfähigkeiten als gegeben betrachte, so wäre vermutlich ein iPad mini für meine Freundin ein brauchbarer Computer. Er wiegt um die 300 Gramm und kann somit auch mit einer Hand gut gehalten werden, kann Mail, Web, Facebook, YouTube, Fotos, dank Pages auch Textverarbeitung, sowie über unseren WLAN-Drucker auch drucken und Nachrichten per iMessage oder WhatsApp versenden. iCloud-Backup inklusive. Da sie weder spielt noch tonnenweise Videos oder Musik installieren würde, reicht die kleinste Variante aus. Idealerweise mit einer Hülle, in der eine Tastatur integriert ist.

Rick Rashid hat eine neue Übersetzungstechnologie von Microsoft vorgestellt, die nicht nur die Rate der Fehler um 30% verringern soll mittels einer Technik die sich Deep Neural Networks nennt und somit nur noch jedes 7te oder 8te Wort einen Fehler macht, sondern sie gibt einem auch noch die Möglichkeit in der eigenen Stimme zu reden. Dafür wird circa eine Stunde an Daten der eigenen Stimme gesammelt und die Übersetzung, so unperfekt sie auch sein mag, ist wirklich mal ein Schritt nach vorne. Checkt das Video nach dem Break.

Paul Allen Mitgründer von Microsoft, ist nicht nur einer der reichsten Männer der Welt, sondern scheint auch noch eine eigene Garde von Technikern damit zu beschäftigen seine (auch eine der größten) Filmsammlung irgendwie einfacher konsumierbar zu machen. Die hatten sich ein Karussell ausgedacht mit dem man sehen kann was Freunde geliked haben, das Hulu, Netflix und iTunes zusammenfasst und natürlich auch Wunschlisten etc. integriert. Apple and Samsung legal fees slashed by magistrate judge
Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal of the US District Court of the Northern District of California ordered Samsung to pay $21,554 in legal fees to Apple, and Apple to pay $160,069 to Samsung over discovery violations in the smartphone patent suit concluded in August. Both requests are significantly less than requested. Grewal took issue with both overstaffing, and "block billing" that failed to detail how attorneys spent the time they billed. Samsung's award was baed on Apple's attempt to force the manufacturer to turn over deposition testimony.

Apple engineer seeks to extend Bonjour network protocol
During a meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in Atlanta, GA this week, Apple engineer Stuart Cheshire has proposed extending existing multicast DNS -- and by association Apple's Bonjour technology -- to better handle more complex network setups. Apple updates firmware for June Macs, LTE iPad lineup
Late on Thursday, Apple issued updates to its MacBook models from June 2012, and made the iOS 6.0.1 firmware available to its LTE-compatible versions of the fourth-generation iPad and the iPad mini, suggesting the latter two devices will be shipping in the near future. The update for the MacBook Pro and Air models includes "graphics performance and reliability enhancements" as well as improving compatibility with some USB devices. The iOS 6.0.1 update issued today is only for LTE-compatible iPad models.

Tumblr iOS app updated, now completely native
Finally jumping headfirst into iOS with a redesigned experience, the updated Tumblr app is now live on the App Store. Whereas the previous version relied in part on simplified web views to replicate the Tumblr feel, the new experience is 100% native to iOS.
After playing around with the new app for a few minutes, it's obvious how much faster it is compared to the previous version. Flipping from screen to screen is quick and responsive. Composing a post actually feels like something you might want to do on the go, now that there's no frustrating lag.

AT&T to allow FaceTime on non-shared data plans, but only on LTE devices
After ruffling plenty of feathers back in August when it announced that FaceTime over cellular would only be available to users on its Mobile Share data plans, AT&T has decided to loosen those restrictions a bit. Today, the carrier announced that customers on its new tiered data plans will be able to use FaceTime on its network, but only if they have LTE-capable devices.

Major Apple suppliers see sales grow 29 percent in October
A group of major Apple suppliers in Taiwan collectively saw sales grow 29 percent year-over-year in October, says Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. Adobe Labs has updated its betas of Lightroom 4.3 and Camera Raw 7.3 to "release candidate" status, and added support for 13 new digital cameras to both programs. NVIDIA's revenue hits a record $1.20 billion for Q3 powered by Tegra 3 tablets, Kepler GPUs
Just as it predicted, NVIDIA's earnings show revenue rose again in Q3, to a new record high of $1.20 billion, 15.3 percent higher than in Q2 up 12.9 percent from the same quarter last year. Its profits also grew accordingly, to $209.1 million, which should be no surprise thanks to its Tegra 3 chip's place at the heart of tablets including Google's Nexus 7 and Microsoft's Surface for Windows RT, with more arriving daily. Mac Game of the Week: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
Most of the games I've covered for this feature so far have come down on the casual side of things, mostly iOS titles that have made their way over to the Mac App Store. But not so with this pick -- The Witcher 2 is a great game, but it is definitely not for the faint of heart (or GPU power).
