The Daily to cut 50 staff members, switches to vertical-only layout
All Things Digital's Peter Kafka is reporting that The Daily expects to tell 50 of its 170 employees that they're being laid off.
Of those positions, 29 were full-time staff members. The Daily's Editor-in-Chief Jesse Angelo said sports coverage will be handled by content partners, such as Fox Sports, and the standalone opinion section will be eliminated.
The Daily launched with a great deal of fanfare 18 months ago originally on the iPad. It quickly added other editions as well, but never got subscriptions

Google postponing Nexus Q launch to 'make it better,' sending a free device to those who pre-ordered
Apparently Google's strange little media streamer isn't quite ready for prime time -- not according to the company that made it, at least. The software giant has begun sending out a note to pre-orderers letting them know that the launch of the sphere has been delayed in order to "work on making it even better." The company adds that it's responding to user feedback from previewers who want it to "do even more than it does today." To show that there are no hard feelings, the company will be "extend[ing] [the] Nexus Q preview to our pre-order customers and send[ing] [them] a free device," according to Google. News Corp.'s The Daily to lay off almost one-third of staff
News Corporation publication The Daily is laying off almost a full third of its workers, according to sources for AllThingsD, which is owned by the same parent company. That translates into about 50 people, who are expected to get their job loss notices today. The editorial and sports departments are said to be taking the biggest hits, although "skeletal" coverage in those areas will remain. Other affected departments are said to include the design and production teams.

Amazon ups Cloud Player bitrates, adds scan-and-match
The Amazon Cloud Player has received some upgrades, along with some new licensing agreements. A new scan-and-match service covering iTunes and Windows Media Player libraries matches songs to Amazon's 20 million track catalog, and makes them available to the Cloud Player app (Google Play, App Store) at a new 256Kbps bitrate at no extra charge, including tracks that have already been uploaded to the service.

Facebook working on 'save-for-later' feature, lets you like things privately

New game coming from creators of The Incident
Developers Neven Mrgan and Matt Comi are also known as Big Bucket. They're the team behind the popular and acclaimed iPhone and iPad game The Incident.
They've just announced a brand new title, coming out later on this year. The as-yet-unnamed game will be announced at Portland's XOXO Festival (the gathering funded by Kickstarter and organized by Andy Baio), and will be previewed there. According to Mrgan, parts of XOXO will be open to the public, so if you're in Portland, you can stop by and see it if you like.

Apple, Samsung make opening statements in US trial
Apple and Samsung have each completed opening statements in their US trial, which officially began yesterday. A lawyer for Apple, Harold McElhinny, began by showing slides of Samsung phones from 2006 and comparing them against models released in 2010. The crux of the trial, he stated, will be how Samsung devices changed so radically in that time, Apple's argument being that Samsung simply stole design ideas from the iPhone, which debuted in 2007. "As we all know it is easier to copy than to innovate. Apple had already taken the risks," said McElhinny.

I've looked at Magic Window a couple of times, first for the iPad and then in its OS X incarnation. The Mac version of the app has been updated today and now includes a total of 60 stunning scenes to spruce up your desktop or to use as a screensaver. Review: The Joy Factory Klick Desk Stand for iPad (3rd-Gen) + iPad 2
The shell included with Klick is somewhat under protective. Easily snapping onto the back of either generation tablet, it does a good job of protecting the bottom and right edges but has a long opening along the top. iWork.com is dead. Long live iWork.com!
Today is the last day that you'll be able to sign into the iWork.com beta. Apple's first attempt at creating a document sharing environment for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote documents never did make it to prime time. Tomorrow, iWork.com goes the way of the dodo and MobileMe.
Apple has built in the capability of sharing your documents between your own devices via iCloud, with a recent update to the OS X version of iWork adding the ability to save to and read from iCloud.
Any documents you have stored on iWork.com should have been moved to your iCloud account, provided that you used the same Apple

Verizon to stop blocking tethering apps, settles with FCC for $1.25
In May of last year, our free ride came to an end. US carriers started blocking third party tethering apps in the Android Market. Not long after, the built in feature was turned off on many phones. Our fortune may be reversing, however. The FCC has ruled that Verizon violated the rules governing the C Block of LTE spectrum by preventing consumers from using any application of their choice. The end result: Big Red will have to open up its airwaves and allow customers to circumvent its $20 a month tethering plan using apps from the Play store -- so long as you're on a "usage-based pricing plan." Apple's components spending increasing dramatically
Statements made by Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer during the recent 3Q 2012 earnings call are beginning to make sense in light of news from AllThingsD's John Paczkowski that shows that Apple's prepayments for inventory components are ramping up in a big way.

Sonnet outs budget Echo Express SE Thunderbolt expansion
Sonnet has followed up its Thunderbolt PCIe expansion cases with new, budget-priced versions called Echo Express SE. The chassis lets users plug PCI Express cards into computers without any expansion ports and communicate with them at high speeds thanks to their Thunderbolt interface. iCloud users complain about vanishing email libraries
Some iCloud users are encountering serious problems with their email accounts, a thread on Apple's support forums indicates. Starting yesterday, some people have been seeing all of their old messages disappear from their iCloud accounts, including folder structures. Notes and aliases have also gone missing, and while affected people can now use iCloud email properly, the old data continues to be missing.

Could AAPL split in a move toward Dow? Bernstein analyst thinks it will
A week after Apple posted its third-quarter earnings for 2012, Bernstein Research analyst A.M. "Toni" Sacconaghi speculates that the time is right for Apple to split its stock if it wants a future spot as an indexed member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

All three editions share a common interface for viewing and converting PDFs, but differ in the format that they export documents to. China sending a probe to the moon next year to look for Moonbase Alpha
State news agency Xinhua is reporting that China is planning to launch a probe to the moon in the second half of 2013. Gmail for iOS adds option to save photos, becomes a smoother operator
Google's Gmail app for iOS has been docked by some potential adopters for feeling like a poor cousin to other native apps. It may be worth revisiting: the 1.3 update has just arrived with a much-requested ability to save common image attachments to an iOS device's photo collection. Apple wins photography, predictive text patents
Apple has won several new patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office. Two of these are specifically related to digital photography; the first, Dynamic exposure metering based on face detection, describes a system through which a device can adjust automatically to best expose the faces in a scene. Panasonics erstes Quartal: Verluste aufgefangen, leichter Gewinn

Nachdem sie im letzten Quartal heftige Verluste einfahren mussten, gab es dieses Quartal bei einem Umsatz von 23 Milliarden Dollar immerhin einen kleinen Gewinn von 164 Millionen Dollar. Die Verkäufe sind zwar um sechs Prozent gefallen, aber mit Restrukturierung und einer Reduzierung der Fixkosten sind trotz der Eurokrise leichte Gewinne möglich gewesen und es fallen sogar 16,6 Millionen Dollar fürs Sparschwein für schlechte Zeiten ab. HTC removes patent in case against Apple
The Apple-Samsung case is now in the courtroom, and things are starting to shape up for next month's HTC versus Apple showdown. The company filed a motion to the International Trade Commission to withdraw a specific patent for a "circuit and operating method for integrated interface of PDA and wireless communication system", which now drops the number of HTC's claims down to two standard-essential patents.

We haven't seen any official information yet, but tipsters report and we've confirmed on our own that Hulu Plus is quietly rolling out to Apple TV set-top boxes this morning. Gestern begann die Hauptverhandlung eines der wichtigsten Apple-Patentverfahren gegen Samsung weltweit in Kalifornien. Anders, als zunächst geplant, waren die Beteiligten jedoch den ganzen Verhandlungstag damit beschäftigt, die Geschworenen auszuwählen. Unter ihnen gibt es einige interessante Vertreter.

HTC drops additional patent from ongoing ITC complaint
On Monday, HTC filed a motion to withdraw its last "home grown" patent from its contentious US International Trade Commission (ITC) complaint against Apple. Taiwan university claims Apple's Siri violating its patents
Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University has filed a suit in Texas alleging that Apple's Siri technology infringes two voice-to-text US patents it was granted in 2007 and 2010. The suit is the opening volley in what may become a wave of suits in the US, as the university claims to be examining whether similar voice recognition systems used by Google and Microsoft are infringing as well.

US Android smartphone sales dip, iOS rises during Q2
Analysis of recent sales figures suggest that US Android handset sales dipped in the second quarter while iOS went up, according market research firm to Strategy Analytics. Overall smartphone shipments across all manufacturers fell five percent to 23.8 million, compared to 25.2 million for the same quarter last year. The lower sales were believed to be due to a combination of the volatile economy and changes in upgrade policies by major carriers.

After an entire day of examination, the jury is set for the Apple versus Samsung trial. US District Court Judge Lucy Koh spent the entire first day of the trial questioning potential jurors about their lives, technology habits, and professions. Opening statements are expected to commence on Tuesday morning. Seven men and three women were picked for the jury. CrushFTP updates to version 6.1, adds S3, HTML5 support
Developer Ben Spink has updated his flagship file transfer server software, CrushFTP, to version 6.1. The new version offers a handful of major new features along with many interface tweaks and speed improvements, along with the usual assortment of bug fixes. The program, which handles FTP and SFTP file transfer along with HTTP and WebDAV, has now added Amazon's S3 protocol as a support transfer option and is compatible with Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8).

Apple delivers Black Hat talk to mediocre reception
CNET's posted a strange writeup for Apple's first talk at the Black Hat security conference, and though the piece is short on details, the theme is clear: There wasn't a lot of groundbreaking news shown off to attendees. Manager of Platform Security Dallas De Atley basically gave a quick rundown of the security measures built in to the architecture of iOS, and didn't give much more. Any hackers looking for Apple to speak in person about vulnerabilities or work being done for the future of the Mac or iOS platforms were apparently turned away disappointed.

Samsung saw yet another procedural setback today at the opening of its trial against Apple in US District Court in San Francisco. An attempt by Samsung to frame an early iPhone prototype labeled "Jony" by Apple designers as copied from Sony -- thereby implying that stealing designs is okay if others do it also -- has been quashed. If you want to send text messages to friends regardless of their device or operating system, you might want to take a closer look at mysms. Mysms is an online service lets you send, receive and store text messages across multiples devices and platforms. It recently added the iPhone to its growing list of supported operating systems, which also includes OS X, Windows, and Android. There's also a web app that'll work with the iPad and a Facebook extension.

Appeals Court: Galaxy Nexus sales can continue during trial
The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has continued a temporary stay of the sales injunction on the Samsing Galaxy Nexus smartphone Apple won earlier this month. The ruling allows Samsung to continue selling the smartphone model. The expedited appeal of Judge Lucy Koh's original ruling of the sales suspension is scheduled for August 20, with a decision on the appeal following in the days or weeks after the hearing.
