Judge denies Apple's bid to move Kodak suit to new court

Apple has suffered another setback in its attempts to stop the bankrupt Kodak from auctioning off a series of patents. After Apple's previous attempt to stop the auction wholesale failed, the company appealed to try to move the case from bankruptcy court to a local district court, which Apple said would be more experienced and better equipped to handle a case like this. But last week, a judge in the case denied Apple's request for a change of venue, cutting off one more argument from Apple against these patents being auctioned off. This case has been a messy one. Trigger private browsing in Safari for specific sites

Tony over at Macolyte has posted a good tip on how to enable private browsing in Safari on a particular site. Why would you want this? It's good for when you're viewing financial sites and other sensitive personal data where you don't want to leave a tracking history, for instance. Strategy Analytics: Android lost US market share in Q2, isn't losing sleep just yet

Apple 10Q shows parts prepayments up by $1.15 billion

During the company's third fiscal quarter, Apple prepayments on components grew by $1.15 billion sequentially, notes Wells Fargo analyst Maynard Um. The information is taken from Apple's recent 10Q filing with the US government, made in parallel with the company's Q3 results announcement. Um comments that the payments are "not necessarily an indicator of demand," but may "reflect Apple's expectation for stronger revenue." Apple has several anticipated products in the pipeline for the rest of 2012, including a new iPhone, new iPods, and possibly a 7- to 8-inch "mini" iPad.

New OS X 10.7.5, iCloud Control Panel betas reach devs

Apple is seeding three updated betas to developers. The main one is a new build of OS X 10.7.5, 11G30. Although few details have been reported, Apple states that the build has no known issues, and is asking developers to concentrate on testing graphics quality and performance. Samsung objects to "gratuitous images" of Steve Jobs in Apple's slides

If you haven't had enough of the Apple vs. Samsung battle royale, in addition to Judge Lucy Koh's ruling about iPhone prototypes yesterday, she also decreed that showing Steve Jobs in Apple's opening statement slides are "relevant to Apple's iPhone design patent and trade dress claims and is not unduly prejudicial." The five slides in question involve the announcement of the iPhone in 2007, the iPad in 2010 and Steve Jobs' patents. Samsung argued that if the court allowed Apple to use these slides that Samsung be allowed use quotes from Jobs in its arguments.

Audit finds MTA allowed Apple unfair bid for Grand Central

New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority gave Apple an unfair advantage in bidding for its current retail space in Grand Central Terminal, according to a newly-completed audit by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. The report says that last May, the MTA allowed Apple to put forward an offer including $5 million in cash, which other parties had just 30 days to attempt to beat. "The competitive process followed by MTAwas at a minimum severely slanted toward Apple," the document reads.

Apple has released images of an iPhone prototype from 2005 codenamed 'purple' as evidence to refute Samsung's assertion that Apple copied its iPhone design from Sony. Get Save As back on Mountain Lion's File menu easily and without hacks

Much rejoicing accompanied the news that Mountain Lion brought back the "Save As" option (which had been taken away in Lion and replaced with the not-nearly-the-same-thing "Duplicate" command). Unfortunately, Save As was relegated to a sub-menu which could only be seen if you held down the Option key, or you could use the not-very-convenient keyboard shortcut Command+Shift+Option+S. For some reason, that keyboard shortcut never worked for me, so I decided to remap it using System Preferences. Since I am never, ever, ever going to use the "Duplicate" item, I decided that I would remap "Duplicate" to something else, and restore Command+Shift+S bac

Court docs confirm 59% iPhone margins, 32% iPad margins

According to recently unsealed documents from this coming Monday's Apple-versus-Samsung trial, the Cupertino-based company earned gross margins of 49 to 58 percent on US iPhone sales between April 2010 and the end of March 2012. The iPad had much lower margin between October 2010 and the end of March 2012, seeing profits between 23 and 32 percent. Apple has declined to comment on the court filing.

Chinese repair lab assembles 'new iPhone' from parts leaks

A Chinese repair site has cleverly taken various parts that have been previously reported as being from the sixth-generation iPhone (often referred to as the "iPhone 5" to follow the iPhone 4S) and assembled a non-working casing to better illustrate what it believes the next iPhone, expected this fall, will look like.
