BAE Systems designs hard composite solar cells: could act as structure of UAVs, piece of soldier's gear
BAE Systems revealed that it's working on hardy, high-capacity solar cells that could power unmanned vehicles and even attach to an individual soldier's gear. According to Darren Buckle, a manager from BAE Systems' Advanced Technology Center, the cells are geared toward smaller, often airborne, military units, where weight is at a premium. The system, still in the development stage, could offer up power for heavy endurance unmanned air vehicles, provided the cells are made sensitive enough to absorb energy in less sunny situations -- something that the

Tiny Wings is heading to the iPad. New NASA app brings spacecraft to life in 3D
NASA is no stranger to 3D. It has done some impressive CGI trips into galaxies and nebulae, and of course it has offered some stunning 3D images from the Mars spacecraft.
NASA has just released a free iPad and iPhone app called Spacecraft 3D. Here's how it works. You launch the app and then print out a target that you put on your desk or a table. The target allows the app to construct a spacecraft that you can see in three dimensions as your walk around it or change your elevation. Currently, the app features the Curiosity rover that will set down on Mars August 6, and the twin GRAIL spacecraft that are currently in orbit around the moon.

Nielsen has Android near 52 percent of US smartphone share in Q2, iPhone ekes out gains
If there was doubt as to whether or not Android would soon become the majority smartphone platform in the US, that's just been erased by Nielsen. WSJ: Sinking social news site Digg bought for $500K by NYC firm Betaworks
Digg, once one of the shining stars of the social media world, is now a sad shell of of its former self. The once mighty news-sharing service founded by Kevin Rose, has just been snatched up by a small New York City firm called Betaworks for a paltry $500,000, according to the Wall Street Journal. The site still draws roughly seven million visitors a month, but that's a far cry from the more than 30 million is was pulling in during its 2008 heyday. And the pocket change paid for the property pales in comparison to the over $45 million it raised from investors over its lifetime. Phocus phantastic for phun iPhone photography
Back in the dark ages of the iPhone 3GS, there was the OWLE bubo -- a machined aluminum case that provided more gripping surface for holding the phone as a camera, a tripod mount, a cold shoe for an LED light, and interchangeable lenses. New York City SoHo Apple Store to reopen on July 14th
Apple's SoHo outlet in New York City will finally reopen on Saturday, July 14th, according to an official announcement. The store is said to have been "completely redesigned," and now features an event theater with extra seating, as well as the first Briefing Room in the city for business customers. The Genius Bar has been expanded as well; to attract people to the store, the first 3,000 visitors will get commemorative t-shirts.

Greenpeace: Apple clean energy policies have improved
Environmentalist group Greenpeace says that Apple's clean energy policies have improved, but the company still has a long way to go. In a new report, Greenpeace analyzes Apple's efforts to reduce its dependency on coal-power, finding that the iPad maker has yet to lay out a realistic plan to power its iCloud offerings with cleaner energy alternatives. Greenpeace's "Clean Energy Road Map" gave Apple a score of 22.6 percent, up from 15.3 percent in April.

Doodle Cat: Like "Simon's Cat", like "Doodle God", but with cattitude
Simon's Cat (Free) is undoubtedly an adorable app. The question is, rather, is this app for you? It's basically a mash-up of Simon's Cat-like art and Doodle God (which was among our suggestions for great vacation apps). You combine on-screen items to "alchemically" create new objects. The cat purrs, plays, and is generally sweet and cute.

Oliver Drobnik over at Cocoanetics has posted another really great how-to write-up, this time about Xcode and command-line tools.
He shows you how to access apps from inside the Xcode bundle by using xcrun, and how to set your default Xcode install (via xcode-select). That's especially useful in these days of beta-versus-production Xcode releases.

US federal government mulls dropping Apple computers
The federal government has joined the list of US political bodies reconsidering Macs in the wake of Apple withdrawing products from EPEAT certification, according to a government source reached by Politico. A product's EPEAT rating is considered by many organizations looking to buy computers in bulk. The source notes that the federal government is currently in the process of making procurement decisions for fiscal 2013; officials are reportedly worried that with Apple backing out, other companies may follow suit, wrecking government attempts to buy environmentally friendly hardware.

Yahoo confirms server breach, over 400k accounts compromised

Greenpeace boosts Apple's rating, but barely
Greenpeace recently released an environmental report on Apple and upgraded the company's score from an F to a D, says a report in Wired. US Iranian group speaks out over Apple Store discrimination
The policy director for the National Iranian American Council, Jamal Abdi, is speaking out on the subject of discrimination against Iranians at Apple Stores. Adobe acknowledges InDesign crash issues on new MacBooks
Adobe InDesign owners using a new MacBook Pro with an Intel Ivy Bridge processor are reporting problems with both the Creative Suite 5 and Creative Suite 6 version of the app. A growing thread on Adobe's website documents the problem which happens when performing routine tasks like deleting a page with content. The InDesign app reportedly locks up and displays a blank warning box before crashing.
Adobe acknowledged the issue and says the only fix right now is to roll back OS X to a version before 10.7.4. Mac OS X version 10.7.4 was released in May to all Mac owners. Pre-Ivy Bridge customers

Apple's PC market share now up to 12% in US, reports state
Gartner released its Q2 2012 PC sales estimate, and it was good news for Apple, bad news for the PC industry. For the seventh quarter in a row, PC sales were flat, especially in the US. Shipments in the US totaled 15.9 million units for the quarter, which is a 5.7 percent decline from the same quarter last year.
"Consumers are less interested in spending on PCs as there are other technology product and services, such as the latest smartphones and media tablets that they are purchasing," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.
While HP, Toshiba and Acer showed double digit year over year declines in the US, Apple actually increased its sales 4.3 percent in the quarter, according to Gartner. It's a small increase, but

Nexus 7: Google macht wohl doch Gewinn mit der Hardware
Das Marktforschungsinstitut IHS iSuppli geht davon aus, dass Google - trotz anders lautender Aussage - mit dem Verkauf der Nexus 7-Hardware durchaus Geld verdient, wenn auch nicht viel. EU to ease licensing rules for iTunes, other digital music stores

Apple officially posts list of Mountain Lion-eligible Macs
After much speculation and hints from developers testing the forthcoming OS X update, Apple has posted a list on the Mountain Lion page of its website exactly which models are able to upgrade to version 10.8, which is coming out later this month and will sell for $20 exclusively through the Mac App Store. Yahoo Voices server hacked, 400,000 passwords leaked
Over 400,000 password and email combinations from a Yahoo Voices-rebranded Associated Content server have been posted onine in an apparent breach of security, according to security analyst Trusted Sec. The passwords are connected to their user-identification email addresses, not just from Yahoo, but also from Gmail, AOL, and more. The crowd-sourced question and answer service Associated Content was purchased by Yahoo in May 2010 and fully integrated into the Yahoo suite of products in December 2011.

Galaxy S III security patch disables unified search
The Galaxy S III received a small security update yesterday, with little detail of what was changed from a security perspective. Samsung still hasn't reported what security content was changed, but a side effect of the patch renders the Google search bar on the phone incapable of searching for local content on the device, thus making it preemptively compliant with recent US court rulings finding the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1 as infringing on a "unified search" patent.

Judge: NY startup can stream live TV to iPhones
A judge ruled today that New York startup Aereo must be allowed to continue sending live television programming to iPhones and other mobile devices in the city. Networks including ABC, NBC, and CBS had sued Aereo for copyright infringement, accusing the company of illegally copying and retransmitting their programming over the Internet. In her decision, Bloomberg reports, Judge Alison Nathan said she understood how Aereo's practices could be unfair to the broadcasters, but the law left her no option other than to allow Aereo to continue transmitting.

Where have all the refurbs gone? Apple's online cupboard is bare
Was there a run on last year's MacBook Pro models? A surge of orders for the factory certified, previously owned iPod nano? The reasons may be mysterious, but the symptom is oddly clear: everything -- yes, everything -- is out of stock in Apple's refurbished product section of the online Apple Store.

Adobe working to fix InDesign flaw on newest MacBooks
New MacBook Air and Pro owners (which ship with OS X 10.7.4) may want to hold off on installing the software update Apple has issued for those models, as it appears to cause an issue with Adobe InDesign CS5, 5.5 and 6. Those affected by the bug say it that if any kind of pop-up dialogue box appears (as would routinely happen in normal operations), it crashes the program. Adobe engineers have acknowledged the issue.

U.S. District Court says live TV can be broadcasted to iPhones, iPads
A U.S. district judge has ruled in favor of Aereo, saying the company is allowed to broadcast live TV to iPhones, iPads and other devices in New York City for now.
Judge Alison Nathan said that even though she was sympathetic to broadcasters who find Aereo a threat, the law is on Aereo's side, The Associated Press reports. The lawsuit against Aereo was filed by the major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) among others.

Project 1640 offers new way to search for planets beyond our solar system
It's taken more than six years of development, but a new imaging system for the Palomar Observatory's 200-inch Hale Telescope finally started capturing images last month, and promises to aid significantly in the search for planets outside our solar system (otherwise known as exoplanets). Worldwide PC market drops 0.1 percent, US leads decline
According to preliminary results from analysts at Gartner and IDC, worldwide PC shipments contracted by 0.1 percent, with the US driving the decrease. Amazon announces GameCircle, similar to Apple's GameCenter
Amazon has announced a new service for its Kindle Fire platform called GameCircle, which is akin to Apple's own GameCenter service. Sprint: carriers suffer collateral damage from Nexus ban
Sprint has weighed in on the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung, claiming that carriers are adversely affected when products are banned due to patent litigation. A FOSS Patents report details Sprint's amicus filing, which makes note of the effort that both carriers and hardware manufacturers put into bringing devices to market and says sales bans hurt more than just those companies accused of infringement. Aereo avoids a preliminary injunction, keeps its antenna to internet TV service on the air for now
While the battle between Aereo, a service that brings OTA TV broadcasts to the internet, and the broadcasters that began suing it before it even launched continues, a judge ruled today against a request for a preliminary injunction to shut it down. Reuters reports that the basis for the decision is that while the broadcasters demonstrated they faced "irreparable harm", Aereo too faced harm from a potential shutdown, and the balance did not tip heavily enough in the broadcasters favor.
