Micron first to market with phase-change memory modules for portable devices (video)

Micron has announced production of the first commercial cellphone phase-change memory (PCM) modules, a type of flash RAM that works by changing a crystal solid to an amorphous state. Panasonic reveals four additions to Lumix camera range

Panasonic has announced four new cameras in its Lumix range. One of the new models, the SZ5, is a compact camera with Wi-Fi connectivity. While it can connect to a wireless router, it can also use iOS and Android apps on mobile devices for remote shooting, using the handset display as a monitor and viewfinder, with controls for focus and zoom functions. TreeHugger: Retina Mac batteries not replaceable

Environmental site TreeHugger has gotten ahold of an Apple memo revealing that the battery in the new Retina MacBook pros cannot be easily replaced. The finding makes the new MacBooks even less repairable than previously thought. Newly-published images show original iPad prototypes

Documents from a December deposition of Apple's lead designer, Jonathan Ive, show images of the earliest iPad prototypes, NetworkWorld notes. During one point in the videotaped Q&A session, Ive is shown images of a device referred to as the "035" mockup/prototype. Research shows that lab-engineered muscle responds to a workout

It's fairly well known that if you want to get ripped, you gotta pump some iron. But what's more of a surprise is that lab-engineered muscle also responds to a workout. Researchers at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Institute for Regenerative Medicine have been looking at a way to help the body grow new muscle, and found that cells derived from muscle tissue (on a bio-compatible material) responded to "exercise." Apple faces Portugal lawsuit over AppleCare

Apple is currently facing yet another international lawsuit over its AppleCare extended warranties. The Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (DECO) is said to have announced plans to sue the company for misleading customers into paying for unnecessary coverage, as local laws already require electronics manufacturers to honor warranty claims for a period of two years, according to Portuguese blog iPhoneTuga.

A British judge has ordered Apple to publicly state that Samsung didn't copy the iPad, reports say. A notice will soon have to appear on the company's UK website, as well as in regional newspapers. The website notice, which has yet to go live, must stay in place for six months.

TIME calls for Instagram pics as Sports Illustrated uses them in print

TIME magazine is looking for Instagram photos to showcase them in a piece on mobile technology. They're looking for a variety of images from daily life. To join the project, add the hashtag #TIMEwireless to Instagram submissions. Make sure you're not infringing on anyone's rights in the process. Instagram photos need to have a caption that include your name, where the image was taken, and a geotag of the location. UK judge forces Apple to state on its site that Samsung didn't copy the iPad

Apple is being forced by a British judge to tacitly state that Samsung didn't copy its iPad design. According to Bloomberg, Judge Colin Birss said that Apple has to post a notice both on its website and several British newspapers and magazines, to help correct the "damaging impression the South Korea-based company was copying Apple's product." Apple buys new Austin land in advance of expansion

Apple has already bought three tracts of land in preparation for its expansion in Austin, Texas, according to the Austin Business Journal. The real estate is in the Milwood Section 20 subdivision near West Parmer and Delcour, next to Apple's existing Austin campus, situated at Riata Vista Circle. While digging through pages of legal documents in the design lawsuit between Apple and Samsung, Yoni Heisler of Network World made a surprising discovery. Online Apple store gets SMS order status updates

Apple has upgraded its online store with the ability to get order status notifications via text message. The option is available during the checkout stage of any order, and should send out an SMS message any time shipment and/or pickup status changes. German court dismisses Apple design claim against Motorola Xoom

A German court has ruled that Motorola's Xoom tablet does not infringe on Apple's patents, says an Associated Press report. In its case, Apple argued that the design of the Motorola Xoom too closely resembled the Apple iPad. A judge did not agree with Apple and ruled against this claim. It was a no-win situation for both companies as the judge also dismissed a counter-suit by Motorola. In its suit, Motorola claimed that Apple's design patent for the iPad is invalid. Google hires designers from Cuban Council to work on Google+

The folks at Mountain View have worked with the well regarded designers at Cuban Council before, but now Google is taking the partnership one step further by hiring several of the firm's employees. The search giant has acquired the contracts of a number of the company's designers explicitly to work on Google+. The details of the deal haven't been revealed, so we have no idea how many members of the staff will be setting sail for the shores of Goog or how much the psuedo acquisition set the company back. A study by Atlanta's Emory University shows that the iPhone 3G is rated as a better ophthalmology picture display that conventional PC workstations. The testing focused on time-critical scenarios like a hospital emergency room. An assortment of 350 abnormal images of the eye were used, and the doctors queried assigned higher ratings to usage of the four-year-old iPhone 3G than a PC with a 19-inch display. Patentkrieg: Apple scheitert mit Klage gegen Motorola Xoom

Apple kämpft im Patentkrieg gegen Android-Geräte auch in Deutschland. Hierzulande musste das Unternehmen nun aber eine Niederlage hinnehmen: Das Landgericht Düsseldorf hat entschieden, dass das Design von Motorolas Tablet Xoom Apples Geschmacksmuster nicht verletzt. Es bleibt aber noch die nächste Instanz. Streng genommen ist der vom Landgericht Düsseldorf entschiedene Fall keiner, der zum eigentlichen “Patentkrieg” gehört: Apple wehrt sich hier nicht gegen eine mutmaßliche Patentverletzung, sondern einer mutmaßlichen Verletzung der Designrechte, also des Geschmackmusters. Damit kommt das relativ uralte Konzept (mit Vorläufern wie dem Rubensschen Flammenrohr) seiner Realisierung einen großen Schritt entgegen, wenn auch vorerst nur im Labor. HTC applies two ex-HP patents to ongoing Apple legal fight

HTC has brought infringement counterclaims against Apple in the Southern District of Florida using two patents it acquired from HP late last year. The patents added to the already-complicated complaint are "installation of network services in an embedded network server" being asserted against Apple's entire product line, and "method and system for central management of a computer network" primarily aimed at Apple Remote Desktop and the associated Screen Sharing feature native to OS X.

Latest iOS 6 beta expands features for iPhone 3GS

Though the iPhone 3GS is still being sold as new and listed as supported hardware for iOS 6, Apple has cautioned owners of the 3GS, the iPhone 4 and even the iPad 2 that some features available to newer models would not be supported, even though the overall OS upgrade was. Developers were thus surprised to learn that Apple appears to have slightly expanded the features supported for the 3GS in iOS 6 Beta 3, with the phone gaining Shared Photo Streams and VIP mail filters.

Briefly: iPhone in opthamology, 1Password, Samsung purchase

A study by Atlanta's Emory University shows that the iPhone 3G is rated as a better opthamology picture display that conventional PC workstations. The testing focused on time-critical scenarios like a hospital emergency room. An assortment of 350 abnormal images of the eye were used, and the doctors queried assigned higher ratings to usage of the four-year-old iPhone 3G than a PC with a 19-inch display. The researchers do point out that the study is not suggesting that an iPhone should take the place of existing opthamology tools, but that the phone should have a place in emergency departments

Daily iPhone App: Over: text+ photos lets you annotate your photos with ease

If you're looking for an easy way to add text to your photos, then you should check out Over: text+ photos. The lightweight photo editor only does text, but it does so with style and ease. The Over: text+ photos app uses a dial as its menu, which is a nice change from the traditional button-driven interface. It includes 19 fonts, and you can buy more via a 99-cent in-app purchase. Besides changing the font type, you can also adjust the size and the alignment of the text. The only drawback I found is the text color, which is limited to shades of grey, white and black. These colors are compatible with most photos, but this limitation might be disappointing for users who like to add a splash of color to their text.

3D, light-trapping solar cells successfully fabricated by Solar3D

Solar3D probably isn't a company you're particularly familiar with at least not yet. The California-based manufacturer has just successfully fabricated a three dimensional solar panel that traps sun light in nano-scale wells on a silicon wafer. Perhaps most exciting, the prototype panel was built using off-the-shelf tech from Panasonic, meaning that the price of mass production shouldn't be prohibitively high. Deadline looms for Motorola Android handset ban

An import ban on Android devices commanded by the US International Trade Commission is scheduled to take place at midnight tonight, barring a last-minute presidential veto. The ban was ordered two months ago, after a ruling that 18 Motorola Mobility products infringe a Microsoft ActiveSync patent covering meeting request publishing and group scheduling from a mobile device. Motorola claims to have a plan to keep the infringing products available in the US, and will have to pay a $0.33 "import tax" on devices brought into the country during the 60-day presidential review period.
