Apple denied Galaxy Nexus and Tab ban in Germany
Samsung is having slightly better luck in Munich than it is here the US in its ongoing legal battle with Apple. The high court upheld a previous ruling that Cupertino's patent relating to "list scrolling and document translation, scaling, and rotation on a touch-screen display" was invalid. Microsoft kicked off public beta for 2012 Xbox Live update, but quickly ran out of space
And just like that, it was all over. Autodesk rolls out Inventor Fusion for Mac
Autodesk announced today the availability of a new offering, Autodesk Inventor Fusion for Mac. Inventor Fusion is a new, Mountain Lion-compatible 3D CAD modeling program that allows designers to create, explore, and share complex shapes and forms. Autodesk also announced a new update to AutoCAD WS for iOS, Android, and web browsers.

OWC shows Mercury Helios PCIe Thunderbolt chassis
OWC has just outed a PCIe Thunderbolt expansion chassis for adding half-length PCIe 2.0 adapter cards with the Mac mini, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and other Thunderbolt-equipped but PCIe-less computers. The professional PCIe cards allow for video capture and/or editing, media transcoding, audio processing and data storage. The Helios chassis can transfer data at up to 10Gbps and are compatible with AHCI-compliant cards.

Google Earth for iOS gets 3D cities, tour guide
Google has updated the iOS version of Google Earth, bringing the mobile app up to v7.0.0. Two new features have been included; the first is the addition of 3D buildings to cities, similar in style to Apple's upcoming Maps app in iOS 6. Only Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Geneva, and Rome are currently being rendered with the extra detail, though Google is promising more cities in coming weeks. The option is also limited to the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or better.

Google Earth for iOS updated with tour guides and 3D flights
Check your iPhone or iPad for an update to the Google Earth app today. Version 7.0 of the free, universal app features tour guides of historic landmarks, as well as 3D flyovers of selected cities.
The flyovers beat Apple to the punch because a similar feature is going to appear in Apple's Maps app this fall as a part of iOS6.
Cities included in this update include Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Geneva and Rome. More cities will be added in the near future. The 3D flyover feature requires an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 or later.

Apple wins stay on having to post 'Samsung did not copy' notice
Apple's pride can stay intact for at least a little while longer: the company successfully won a stay on a UK ruling that would have it post notices clearing Samsung's name in the wake of the two tech giants' patent dispute in the country. Apple now won't have to face any kind of public flogging unless it loses an appeal on the non-infringement verdict, which is due to be heard in October. Apple demands Amazon executive in Amazon Appstore case
As a part of an ongoing lawsuit, Apple is demanding that Amazon provide an executive to testify about the removal of the word "for Android" from some Amazon Appstore marketing, court documents show. In March 2011 Apple sued Amazon, claiming that the latter was intentionally trying to confuse people by using a name similar to Apple's own App Store. Ask iLounge: Syncing with iTunes without updating Last Played Info
Q: Hi, I’m wondering if there is any way to sync an iPod/iPhone to an iTunes library without syncing the metadata, specifically the “last played” info. I have a playlist set up to pull 50 songs by least recently played. This way I get to cycle through all 7,000 of my songs before I hear them again. Unfortunately my wife and my daughter share some of those songs and each time they listen to one and sync with iTunes it changes…

Mountain Lion 101: Gatekeeper controls app launches for security's sake
Gatekeeper isn't the most obvious feature of the new OS X Mountain Lion system that you probably downloaded and installed yesterday, but it might be one of the most important. Gatekeeper essentially oversees a list of verified developers who have applied for and received a Developer ID from Apple.
It also allows you to specify whether your Mac will install apps only from the App Store, from the App Store and this list, or from anywhere you want. If you choose the Mac App Store only, you'll be able to make sure that everything you install has gone through Apple's approval process, which is about as protected from malware as you can get.

Amazon Q2 2012 earnings: net income down 96 percent to $7MM, net sales up 29 percent to $12.83 billion
When internet mega retailer Amazon kicked off its fiscal year this past spring with $13.8 billion in net sales, the prognosis for the quarter ahead was dour, to say the least. At the time, the company projected its Q2 2012 performance would see an operating loss of $40MM to $260MM versus Q2 2011, as well as a slight down tick in revenue at $11.9 billion to $13.3 billion quarter to quarter. Well, the numbers are in and it looks like the forecast was right on the money. The Seattle-based outfit posted $7MM in net income for the quarter, a year over year loss amounting to a whopping 96 percent decrease. Facebook posts first earnings as a public company: $1.18 billion in revenue, 955 million users
Facebook revealed its Q1 earnings in an SEC filing leading up to its big IPO earlier this year, but it's now officially out with its first earnings report as a public company. For Q2 of 2012, it saw $1.18 billion in revenue, slightly better than what analysts were expecting. It's also confirmed that it has 955 million monthly active users (or what it calls MAUs) as of the end of June, up 29 percent year-over-year,including 543 million mobile users. Mac App Store easter egg: subtle but fun
Are you familiar with easter eggs? Not the type that you dye in pastel colors and hide in the back yard, only to find them a year later in a disgusting mess; no, these are fun little software "signatures" that developers put into apps. Well, although many Apple devices used to contain easter eggs, Steve Jobs put the kibosh on them after he returned to Apple. Now Jesus Diaz at Gizmodo has found an easter egg built into the Mac App Store in OS X Mountain Lion -- could this be a sign of more easter eggs hiding in the new operating system?

NVIDIA throws support behind Miracast as wireless display standard
TI may have blazed the trail, but today NVIDIA has announced that it'll support Miracast as an integral part of its Tegra mobile platform. News: Apple gets stay on Samsung non-copy notice
Apple has received a stay on a court order that would have led to it posting pro-Samsung messages. Bloomberg reports that a London court has ruled that the order — which called for Apple to post a notice on its U.K. site and take out advertisements in British newspapers explaining that Samsung hadn’t copied the iPad — will be stayed until after Apple’s appeal is heard in October.

Security expert shows that Android and Nokia NFC can be hacked -- under certain conditions
A research consultant has revealed to Ars Technica that he can force NFC-equipped Android and Nokia phones to run malicious code in several ways -- but only with specific devices and constraints. Apple vs. Samsung: Vorerst keine Hinweise auf britischer Apple-Seite
Vor einigen Tagen hatte ein britischer Richter entschieden, dass Apple auf seiner UK-Website und in diversen britischen Zeitungen darauf hinweisen müsse, dass Samsung nicht bei Apple kopiert habe. Die kurz darauf eingelegte Berufung hatte jedoch Erfolg und bedeutet, dass Apple vorerst keine “Werbung für den Konkurrenten” machen muss.

Although Messages has been available as beta software since February of 2012, it's now part of OS X Mountain Lion. This app replaces the old iChat app, providing a consolidated way to send messages not only to other Messages users, but also to friends with accounts on AIM, Yahoo!, Google Talk, and Jabber. Some Up-to-Date codes mistakenly replaced with OS X Server
Apple is still encountering trouble with the Mountain Lion Up-to-Date program complaints indicate. The company has had to reissue codes to a number of people who applied for free upgrades to Mountain Lion. Now, though, some of the group getting new codes say they are getting codes for OS X Server instead. A copy of Server is useless without Mountain Lion already installed.

Elgato is currently celebrating the tenth anniversary of its EyeTV product. EyeTV is now a line of hardware and a set of apps for Mac and iOS which allow you to watch and record TV. Elgato makes other products as well, like capture devices and storage.

Google launches Fiber service, details packages, equipment
Google has officially launched its Google Fiber project. A streamed event by the search provider announced that both Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri will have the gigabit Internet service introduced to households within six weeks. Packages, including necessary hardware, and registration incentives were detailed on a YouTube stream, along with the surprise offer of "free" slower Internet access to those not wanting the full gigabit service.

Mountain Lion 101: Safari
Apple's venerable Mac Web browser, Safari, was updated to version 6.0 yesterday with the release of OS X Mountain Lion with many new features and one glaring omission.
First, let's talk about the omission -- while earlier versions of Safari offered an RSS button in the address bar that allowed a one-click way to subscribe to RSS or Atom feeds for sites that provided them, Safari 6 did away with this feature. Fortunately, one developer has already stepped up and fixed the problem by writing a Safari extension to add the button back.

Microsoft announces Office Mountain Lion update
In a post on the Office for Mac blog, Microsoft's Mac Office team announced that the 2011 version of their software now sports full compatibility with the latest version of Apple's operating system, OS X Mountain Lion. The post walks users through the update process necessary to ensure full compatibility between Office and the new OS. Apple wins stay on posting site notice in Samsung dispute
Apple has won a small but significant court ruling in one of its legal battles with Samsung, Bloomberg reports. In the UK a London court has ruled that, at least temporarily, Apple won't have to post a notice on its UK website announcing an earlier ruling, in which the courts found that Samsung didn't copy the design of the iPad with the Galaxy Tab. Arguing against the notice, Apple had claimed that it didn't want to advertise for a rival company.

Path gets new sharing features, better camera
Users of social networking app Path have a few new features this morning that should make them very happy. The free app, which allows sharing only to a few (150) good friends, is quite popular as it serves as a gateway to posting on other services such as Twitter and Foursquare.
To start with, users are now able to share movies they're watching and books they're reading. A tap on the "music" button now shows movies and books as well, with popular current films listed and shareable with a tap. It's the same with books -- bestsellers and popular titles are listed so you can tell your friends that you're finally catching up and reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo".
Taking photos with Path has gotten better. The camera is now changed and takes

iTunes U opens up limited accounts to K-12 teachers
During its Q3 2012 earnings conference call, Apple revealed that the quarter was its best yet for educational sales of the Mac and the iPad. To capitalize on this expansion into education, Apple updated iTunes U and now allows K-12 teachers to create private courses for their students.
Previously, teachers could add their lectures to Apple's repository, but only if their school or institution was enrolled in the iTunes U program. Windows malware found in iOS App Store app
An Apple forum user with the username deesto said in a post that he downloaded the free "Instaquotes Quotes Cards for Instagram" app and his ClamXav tool flagged the file as malware. Further inspection by CNET revealed that the alert was not a false positive and the file did contain a piece of malware known as Worm/VB.LY.24 (Worm.VB-900).

Reporting its second quarter 2012 financial results, Sprint has revealed that it sold “nearly” 1.5 million iPhones during the period. Of course, the company also mentioned a very different reason: Birds. Patentkrieg: Google soll Samsung vor zu großer iPad-Ähnlichkeit gewarnt haben
Die Verhandlungsphase einer der wichtigsten Klagen des “Patentkriegs” beginnt am kommenden Montag. Apple möchte das Gericht davon überzeugen, dass Samsung das iPhone und iPad absichtlich kopiert hat – und meint, Beweise dafür zu haben, dass Google und andere Samsung-Partner die Koreaner auf die zu große Ähnlichkeit hingewiesen habe.
Die Website All Things D will erfahren haben, dass Apple sich mit einer Einlassung in dem Verfahren in Kalifornien auf mehrere Passagen in Samsung-Dokumenten beziehen wird, die Samsung offenbar offenlegen musste. Sprint's iPhone gamble isn't paying off as 2012 Q2 figures reveal $629 million operating loss
Sprint's second quarter figures have arrived, revealing that despite the company's billion-dollar gamble on the iPhone, it's still feeling the bite. While it sold 1.5 million iPhones in the three month period (40 percent to new and postpaid customers), it recorded an operating loss of $629 million and a colossal net loss of $1.4 billion. Tablet-Markt: iPad baut Vorsprung auf Android-Geräte aus
Auf dem Smartphone-Markt muss sich Apple wohl auch langfristig damit abfinden, dass der Marktanteil von Googles Android größer als der des iOS ist. Samsung: Ohne uns hätte Apple kein einziges iPhone verkauft

Die Facebook-App fürs iOS ist nicht gerade schnell. Ende Juni hieß es, dass noch im Juli eine deutlich flüssiger arbeitende Version erscheinen soll. Sieht so aus als wären sie nicht nachtragend bei Microsoft: obwohl Apple anscheinend Safari für Mac langsam aber sicher unter den Tisch fallenlassen will, hat Microsoft auf dem Office for Mac-Blog bekanntgegeben, dass das Update für die Office-Suite ab sofort auch auf Mountain Lion läuft. Apple SMC update adds missing Power Nap to some notebooks
Although a new feature called Power Nap was supposed to be part of the Mountain Lion install available today, some owners of recent MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro models have reported the feature missing from the Energy Saver system preference. For some, reinstalling the new Mountain Lion has fixed the issue, but late yesterday Apple issued a firmware update for mid-2011 and newer MacBook Airs to restore the Power Nap feature.

Yes, with the arrival of Mountain Lion on the Mac today, Apple has finally extended its Game Center iOS gaming social service to the desktop. The easiest way to find Game Center on your Mountain Lion-equipped Mac is to jump on over to the Launchpad, where Apple's already set up an icon for you. Mountain Lion 101: The iCloud Document Library
One of my favorite features of Mountain Lion to demonstrate so far has been the iCloud Document Library. This is a way to store your iWork, TextEdit, and Preview documents in iCloud so that they are immediately accessible from other Macs on the same iCloud account as well as on connected iOS devices.
TUAW blogger and developer Erica Sadun told me the secret behind this on Wednesday. If you go to your Library folder and open the "Mobile Documents" folder, you'll notice that the name of the folder changes to iCloud (see screenshot below). That's where all of those documents are saved, and it's even possible to just drag items into the folder to add them to your iCloud Document Library.

Apple versus Samsung jury to be told of evidence destruction

Strategy Analytics: iPad outsells Android tablets by 2:1
Despite Android tablets achieving an estimated 7.3 million sales in this quarter, the market is still wholly dominated by Apple at 17 million unit sold in the last quarter, according to a new report by Strategy Analytics. Apple now controls 68.3 percent of the tablet market, compared to 62 percent in the second quarter of 2011.

Mountain Lion 101: Sharing and Twitter (but not Facebook yet)
If you haven't yet, you'll want to go into System Preferences, and then choose Mail, Contacts & Calendars to set up your various accounts. Just like on the iPhone and the iPad, you can now set up certain cloud services in OS X. Your iCloud and mail accounts are in there (for Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo!, and AOL), but there's also now logins for Twitter, Vimeo and Flickr as well.
Logging into those is as easy as logging into the main sites, and especially if you share information and links often on social networks, it could make things a lot easier for you as well.
The one big drawback is that Facebook integration is not yet included in the OS. It was

CompactFlash Association develops XQD 2.0 spec, promises up to 8 Gbps throughput
