Am Tag des Mountain Lion – Releases präsentiere ich nun ein Buch für den Vorgänger: OS X Lion. Was dabei halb so schlimm ist: Das Buch richtet sich an Neueinsteiger oder Umsteiger in die Welt von OS X. Es behandelt die grundlegenden Bedienelemente und nützliche Tastenkombinationen und Einstellungen um sich so gut wie möglich mit Apples Betriebssystem vertraut zu machen.

Google shows off Creator Space in London, hopes to foster more professional YouTube videos
Google confirmed a few months back that it was looking to build some studios in at least a few cities to give YouTube video makers a more professional workspace, and we now have our first good look at exactly what it's had in mind. The company's today released a video showcasing its new London-based Creator Space, which is said to be opening its doors in the "next few weeks" in Google's own Soho office. Safari 6 for Windows not yet available
Safari 6, as you might have noticed in Software Update this morning, is now out for OS X. But Windows users have noticed something a little strange: There are no download links for a Windows version, and the latest version is still Safari 5.1.7 on Apple's official website.
I don't think this means Safari for Windows is entirely dead, but Apple apparently believed it had other things to do with the release of Mountain Lion and those iWork updates -- the Webkit nightly builds, after all, are still coming out for a Windows version. New York Times ends support for official BlackBerry, WebOS apps
Looks like the New York Times is signaling the death knell for RIM, albeit subtly. In a move that surely underscores the withering faith content companies have for the once beloved platform, the venerable Sulzberger-backed news organization has pulled all support for its DealBook Reader and NYTimes app for BlackBerry as of July 23rd. Some newer Up-to-Date codes for Mountain Lion still failing
People are continuing to experience problems trying to redeem Mountain Lion upgrade codes, according tothreads on Apple's support forums. The company today had to reissue codes to people who applied for the Up-to-Date program on Monday, before the program was meant to be launched. Even some new registrants are having problems however, receiving Mac App Store messages telling them that their codes have already been used.

Stellt Apple Safari für Windows ein?
Nachdem heute Safari 6 für Lion und Mountain Lion erschienen ist hat Apple natürlich auch die Produktseiten zu Safari auf den neusten Stand gebracht. Nokia Maps for Windows Phone updated with route planner and Groupon integration
It feels like it was only yesterday that Nokia handed its Windows Phone Maps application a complete and quite hefty makeover, which, as we know, brought the addition of reviews and friends' photos to the app. Regardless, Nokia Maps appears to be ready to hit version 2.5, bringing with it an all-new Groupon integration to help US folks find nearby deals and a route planner service that, well, should be pretty self-explanatory. Apple's "disappointing" quarter
In amongst the MoLo Madness, there's been some back and forth in the blogosphere today over the possibility that Apple's third quarter financial results were "disappointing" or not, mostly based on the fact that professional analysts predicted Apple would earn far more than it did and now they're butthurt.

SpellTower offers fun word-based board-clearing game
For US$3.99, SpellTower (now on the Mac App Store) provides an amusing diversion for anyone who likes word games. Although it's similar to other "find the word" board-clearing games, it adds in just enough bonus features to differentiate it from the pack.
The blue and black squares provide extra destruction powers and "minimum word size" indicators nicely ramp-up game play as they force you to build extra-long words. Words of at least 5 letters supply extra board-clearing power. These extras combine for a quicker game pace tempered with a few extra challenges.

Podcasts app expected to get critical Wednesday update
Later today, Apple will be releasing an important update to the official Podcasts app for iOS, sources for All Things D say. Many users have complained about the app being broken, for instance exhibiting extremely slow performance or failing to mark podcasts as played. One of its most promoted features is sync with iTunes, but those subscriptions are not carrying over between devices as expected.

How long will it take to install Mountain Lion?
You're about to spend US$19.99 on Mountain Lion and want to know how long it will take to update your Mac. Fortunately, the folks at Tekserve have updated several machines and shared the results.

Fujitsu Stylistic M532 Android tablet cozies up to the FCC
Half a year has gone by with nary a word nor sighting, but it looks like Fujitsu's svelte Stylistic M532 tab is ready to break cover. Mountain Lion im Apple Store: Startschwierigkeiten in San Francisco
Wie schon heute morgen berichtet, gab es in Apples eigenen Stores Schwierigkeiten das Mountain-Lion-Update auf den ausgestellten Macs einzuspielen. Auch der Apple Store San Francisco auf der Stockton Street war davon betroffen.
Beim Besuch des Stores war das Personal heute morgen (Ortszeit San Francisco) noch damit beschäftigt das Update auf den Maschinen zu installieren. Was genau die Probleme waren wollte man nicht sagen. In der Nachtschicht hat aber offensichtlich nicht alles so geklappt wie ursprünglich geplant.

Building an OS X Mountain Lion installer thumb drive
Last year, I posted about creating a standalone Lion USB installer thumb drive. This year, I update those instructions for Mountain Lion.
You'll need a copy of the OS X Mountain Lion installer. If you saved a copy when you first installed Mountain Lion, great. If not, you'll need to re-download it from the Mac App Store.
Launch the App Store and option-click the Purchases tab. An "Install" button should appear next to Mountain Lion. Click it to re-download the installer. You can use this option-click-Purchases trick to re-download any purchase, not just Mountain Lion.

Mountain Lion 101: Reminders and Notes

Reminders
Reminders is one of the iOS apps that I was waiting for on OS X, and now that it's here I am dumping my many other to-do apps. Why? Well, it's not that I don't like buying a lot of apps, but if I can get something that is integrated into my operating systems and free, I'm going to go for it.

Apple updates Xcode, Remote Desktop, iTunes U
Continuing a spree of software updates, Apple has also posted new versions of Xcode and Remote Desktop for the Mac, and iTunes U for iOS devices. Xcode 4.4 incorporates upgrades such as Retina display support, new C++ and Objective-C features, and the ability to commit individually-selected changes during source control. Mountain Lion 101: Power Nap
One of OS X Mountain Lion's lesser-known features is the curiously named Power Nap. Nuance adds Siri-like Nina voice interface feature
A new girl is aiming to steal some of Apple's Siri voice assistant fame and her name is Nina. Nuance, the company behind other speech recognition technologies such as Dragon TV and Dragon Drive, brought out Nina, though she will cater to a different user base than Siri and Samsung's S Voice or Google Now in Jelly Bean. Apple updates some iOS apps for better Mountain Lion and iCloud compatibility
Mac apps aren't the only ones getting updates today. Apple has released updates to Pages, Keynote, Numbers, and iTunes U for iOS, improving compatibility with iCloud, according to a post on MacStories.
Pages, Keynote and Numbers have all been updated to version 1.6.1. According to the update notes, the new apps work "with iCloud to make documents automatically available between your iOS device and [Pages/Keynote/Numbers] on your Mac. Changes you make to a document on one device are instantly available on the other." The update also requires that Pages 4.2, Numbers 2.2, and Keynote 5.2 be installed on your Mac.

Microsoft confirms dates for BUILD 2012: October 30th to November 2nd in Redmond

Apple reissues Mountain Lion codes for Up-to-Date program
Apple is issuing new Mac App Store codes to people who registered too early for the Mountain Lion Up-to-Date Program, reports say. On Monday the company accidentally made a submission form live, and for a brief time qualifying people received download codes via email. Those codes aren't working as of today's official Mountain Lion launch, requiring the replacements.

CenturyLink gets $35 million FCC grant to connect 45,000 rural homes to the internet
CenturyLink has announced that it's getting $35 million from the FCC's Connect America Fund to hook 45,000 homes in rural areas up to the internet. The company isn't hiding its disappointment at the donation, since it was originally angling for closer to $90 million. However, the conditions attached to the extra cash made further deployment "uneconomic," so the company will have to settle at this first target to begin with. Mit OS X 10.7 Lion endete eine Ära endgültig, nämlich die des Clean-Installs. Voraussetzung für Lion war Snow Leopard. Mit dem Erwerb des neuen Systems durch den Mac App Store wurde der Mac lediglich auf Lion umgestellt. Das System komplett neu aufzusetzen, war ohne Weiteres nicht möglich.

Apple has dropped OS X Lion from the Mac App Store. Those who have purchased it are still seeing it in their purchases list, though some TUAW staffers are saying they're not able to download it. I wasn't able to download it on my MacBook Pro, though I was able to start doing so on my iMac.
Those with OS X Lion who are not making the Mountain Lion upgrade should be able use the Lion Internet Recovery process if there are any issues or use Lion Recovery Disk Assistant to make a backup on an external drive. We also recommend making a bootable backup

Radian project would deliver time-lapse to iPhone
Time lapse photography can produce stunning photographs, but capturing the images to create the effect can be difficult. Kris Cheng is working on Radian, a Kickstarter camera and iPhone accessory that'll make the process a little bit easier.
The Radian is a hockey puck-shaped device that attaches to your DSLR camera. It fits onto the tripod mount and uses the trigger release input to communicate with your camera. AT&T reveals new multi-beam antenna tech for live events, could offer data speeds five times faster (video)
AT&T's improving its coverage at live events by establishing a new (impressive sounding) setup -- the five-beam multi-beam antenna. It works by dividing its customers' signals into five narrow parts, illustrated above by the color bands, upping the bandwidth by splitting traffic to each segment, enabling up to five times the data traffic. Pearltrees has launched a new iPhone app that allows users to create a virtual library of all the things that they like. The mobile app takes all of the features from the web interface and optimizes them for a portable experience. What can I say about my love of Mountain Lion's new Dictation feature? I've wanted to be able to talk and have my words transcribed to text ever since I saw the original "Assignment: Earth" episode of Star Trek back in 1968 (image at top of post). Mountain Lion up-to-date program is now live
For those who qualify, Apple's up-to-date program for OS X Mountain Lion is now live. Those who purchased a qualifying new computer or refurbished machine from June 11 through July 25 have until August 24 to file for a redemption code that can be used in the Mac App Store. Computers purchased after today have 30 days to file for a redemption code if Mountain Lion wasn't already installed on your machine.
To complete the form, you will need to know the day you purchased the machine and the serial number. Fill out the forms, the code will be emailed to you, and then you can enjoy your new copy of Mountain Lion!

Beim gestrigen Quartalsbericht hat Apple nach dem offiziellen und ausgiebigen Number crunching außerdem bestätigt, daß OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion ab heute im App Store verfügbar sein wird. Das Upgrade kostet mit 15,99 Euro weniger als bei Lion, allerdings funktioniert es nicht mit allen 64-Bit Macs. Samsung dodges threat of GS3 ban with OTA update
Samsung has taken steps to avoid a potential ban on the sale of the Galaxy S III following up its software patch for US models with a similar patch for international unlocked versions of its flagship handset. Although described as a "stability update" by the Korean tech giant, it removes the local on-device search function that is a feature of the Google-developed Android OS. Wie nach jeder großen Aktualisierung des Betriebssystem muss auch bei der Installation von OS X Mountain Lion die Kompatibilität zu bestehender Software beachtet werden. PSA: PlayStation Network scheduled maintenace in Europe starts tomorrow
European gamers are warned to get something else to do from Thursday afternoon. Sony's PlayStation Network is set to go offline on that side of the Atlantic starting from 4PM GMT tomorrow, through to 8AM Friday. Beim gestrigen Quartalsbericht hat Apple nach dem offiziellen und ausgiebigen Number crunching außerdem bestätigt, daß OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion ab heute im App Store verfügbar sein wird. Das Upgrade kostet mit 15,99 Euro weniger als bei Lion, allerdings funktioniert es nicht mit allen 64-Bit Macs. Noch ist es bei uns nicht im App Store aufgetaucht, aber lange dürfte es nicht mehr dauern.

Apple seeking $2.5 billion from Samsung
Apple filed a brief in its infringement case against Samsung and argued the Korean company should pay Apple a combined total of $2.525 billion, according to FOSS Patents. The amount includes $25 million in royalty damages and another $2.5 billion, which includes the amount Samsung has unjustly gained and Apple has lost because of Samsung's copycat devices.
Breaking it down, Apple asked for $2.02 per unit for the "overscroll bounce" '318 patent, $3.10 for the '915 "scrolling API" patent, $2.20 for the "tap to zoom and navigate" '163 patent and $24 for the trade dress and design patents.

Educational sales 'best ever' for Apple in Q3
During its latest financial conference call, Apple emphasized that the last quarter was its best ever for Mac sales in the education market, with K-12 and higher-education institutions accounting for a significant portion of overall shipments. Rock Band games to be removed from iOS App Store this month
Despite the fad of plastic instruments coming to a quiet end a few years ago, Rock Band is still a fairly popular brand, popular at parties and on the upcoming downloadable console version called Rock Band Blitz. But at least one part of Rock Band's legacy is going away for good: EA has announced that the iOS versions of the game will be off of the App Store as of July 31. Harmonix was the original creator of Rock Band, EA licensed the game and the name to put versions on the App Store (made by third-party developers), and as a result of that license expiring, Rock Band for iPhone and iPad are going bye-bye.

New OS X Trojan identified, bypasses user permissions
Security firm Intego's virus team has identified a new Trojan horse targeting the Mac platform. The Trojan, called Crisis, has yet to be seen in the wild, but Intego says it is engineered to make analysis of the malware difficult for security experts. Intego has stresses alertness regarding the new malware, as it appears to be able to bypass OS X security features and install itself with no user interaction.

Apple executives have admitted that persistent rumors surrounding its upcoming devices, such as the sixth-generation iPhone, have had a negative impact on sales. After several years of stellar performance and beating Wall Street forecasts, the company failed to meet analyst expectations for its latest fiscal quarter. In the spirit of Tim Cook's maniacal excitement about upcoming Apple products, I bring to you the shell script you can run repeatedly from the command line to check the App Store to see if Mountain Lion is ready for purchase.
This is what I used last year to check for Lion; it worked. This year, I update the search string to "Mountain Lion" instead.

Wall Street hammers Apple stock in afterhours trading
Apple stock has already fallen roughly $30 in afterhours trading, following the announcement of the company's third-quarter results. Although it was hovering around the $600 mark at 5PM Eastern time, at 5:30 that figure plummeted to roughly $570. It continues to sit at that level as of this writing.

EA joins Iron Monkey and Firemint mobile studios to create Firemonkeys
EA has announced that it's consolidating its two biggest mobile studios. Firemint is the developer behind Flight Control and Spy Mouse (and was acquired by EA last year), and Iron Monkey is the developer behind EA's iOS hits like Mass Effect Infiltrator and Dead Space. Those two Melbourne, Australia-based studios are now joining up to become FireMonkeys, serving as a big internal mobile studio for EA.
Between the two studios, Firemonkeys now claims over 85 million downloads on the App Store, as well as 15 number one hits between them. EA says the teams will now be collaborating

Q3 breakdown shows leap for iPhone, dip for Macs
As a part of its Q3 results announcement, Apple has posted a detailed breakdown (PDF) of its performance. In the Americas, for instance, revenue rose 26 percent year-over-year to hit $12.806 billion. Unlike some past quarters in fact regional growth was relatively evenly distributed, up 16 percent in Europe (to $8.237 billion), 33 percent in Japan ($2.009 billion), and 25 percent in the Asia-Pacific region ($7.887 billion). Worldwide retail revenues grew 17 percent to $4.084 billion.

Huawei 1H 2012: profits dropped 22 percent, still made $1.37 billion
Huawei's financial figures for the first six months of 2012 reveal that the Chinese behemoth brought in turnover of 102.7 billion yuan ($16.08 billion), making a profit of 8.79 billion yuan ($1.37 billion).
