Apple OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion ships July 25
Announced during the quarterly earnings release, Apple has finalized a date for the release of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. The newest version of the operation system will be released tomorrow, July 24, exclusively on the Mac App Store. Apple has posted a list on the Mountain Lion page exactly which models are able to upgrade to version 10.8. This new version of OS X relies even further on video-card performance, which mean some economy models and other models from recent years may not be qualified to update.

Ford C-Max Energi pricing: $29,995 after a federal tax credit, available this fall

Apple Quartalszahlen 3-2012: 26 Millionen iPhones, 17 Millionen iPads

Apple posts $35 billion in Q3 2012 revenue
Apple has announced the results of its third fiscal quarter, which ended on June 30th. Revenue increased 23 percent year-over-year to $35 billion, generating a net income of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per share; in Q3 2011, by contrast, Apple reported $7.3 billion in income, rated at $7.79 per share. The increase might nevertheless be a disappointment to analysts, since the consensus forecast was $37.2 billion in revenue with EPS of $10.35.

Apple's Q3 hardware sales by the numbers: 17 million iPads, 26 million iPhones, 4 million Macs
Apple's out with its third quarter financials today and, as is customary, it's provided some sales figures for all of its big hardware categories. Those are headlined by record sales of the iPad, which jumped a whopping 84 percent year-over-year to 17 million units sold during the quarter (no word on a breakdown by iPad model, though). iPhone sales were also up to 26 million units sold, although that represents a more modest growth of "just" 28 percent, no doubt due in part to folks holding off on a purchase until the next model comes out. A bit more surprising are the Mac sales numbers which, despite a new slate of MacBooks, saw growth of only two percent for sales of an even four million in the quarter --

Apple 3Q 2012 earnings reported: Another banner quarter
Apple has announced its third quarter 2012 earnings, and the numbers are once again spectacular.
The company posted quarterly revenues of $35 billion, up from $28.6 billion a year ago. Net profit was $8.8 billion or $9.32 per diluted share, up from $7.3 billion last year or $7.79 per diluted share.
Apple sold 26.0 million iPhones, which indicates 28 percent growth over the year-ago quarter. The big surprise was that the company sold 17.0 million iPads during the quarter, up 84 percent over the previous year. 4 million Macs were sold, representing a 2 percent increase over last year's quarter.

Tim Cook promises "amazing new products." What are they?
In today's financial press release, Tim Cook states, "We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we've got in the pipeline."

Apple announces Q3 2012 earnings: $35 billion revenue, $8.8 billion in net profits
It's hard to believe its been just three months since we were here last, but it's true. It's already earnings season again and, in the the feast of financial conference calls, Apple is an entree. Not surprisingly, Cupertino was raking in the big bucks yet again, but it wasn't quite the windfall of revenue the company has seen in the past. All told the company pulled in $35 billion in revenue, pocketing $8.8 billion of that as pure profit. Apple just confirmed in its Q3 2012 earnings report that Mountain Lion is coming tomorrow. The hotly anticipated 10.8 version of OS X brings with it a host of new features, as we've expounded upon in the past. Netflix Q2 2012 earnings: 530,000 more US subscribers and a return to profitability
Netflix recently let it drop that its users clocked in more than one billion hours of content-viewing in the month of June alone, although the big question for CEO Reed Hastings is how that relates to the company's subscriber base. The results are in from its Q2 2012 earnings report, and it's claiming 27.56 million subscribers worldwide, up from 26 million last quarter. In the US alone that includes 23.94 million customers, after it reported 23.4 million in Q1. Also notable is a plan to launch service in an "additional attractive European market" in Q4, but we'll find out more about those plans later in Q3. O

Email client alternatives to Sparrow for the Mac

Drobo Mini, 5D storage arrays go up for pre-order
The two Drobo storage arrays introduced last month have now popped up at online retailers and Drobo's own site, revealing their prices and ship dates. The Mini and 5D are priced starting at $650 and $850, respectively. Password entry requirement removed from iOS 6 beta 3 [u]
(Updated with conflicting accounts) Advancing the password-removal trend that started with beta 1 of iOS 6, the latest build no longer requires a password when downloading free apps. The first beta of iOS 6 allowed developers to re-download purchased applications and updates without entering the iOS App Store account information, making this change an extension to the password removal. Many of the items available on the App Store are free, and do not charge the user's account.

Apple secures multitouch-related patent dating back to 1995 from inventor
Apple has come into possession of a number of patents owned by Canadian inventor Timothy R. Pryor in recent years (see the More Coverage link below for a few examples), and it's just today been granted another that's particularly interesting. Apple secures EU ban on Galaxy Tab 7.7
Apple's legal team may be doing a happy dance today, after a German court issued an injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet. The injunction will ban sales of the small tablet in the entire European Union; it was already off the shelves in Germany.
The court found that the design of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 infringed on Apple designs from 2004. The court also rejected Samsung's argument that the ban should only apply to Germany and issued the ban across the EU instead.

Apple pursuing over $2.5 billion in upcoming Samsung trial
Apple is hoping to reap over $2.5 billion in damage payments in its upcoming patent infringement trial against Samsung, which starts July 30th, according to FOSS Patents. The company is claiming $500 million in lost profits, and $25 million in "reasonable royalty damages." Apple also argues that Samsung has been "unjustly enriched" by an unspecified amount, but one which nevertheless brings the base tally to $2.525 billion.

Apple and Google appealing dismissal of Apple versus Motorola lawsuit
Back in June, TUAW reported on the dismissal of reciprocal lawsuits brought by Apple and Motorola Mobility -- now part of Google -- against each other. At the time, it was stated that "both companies apparently failed to adequately demonstrate that injunctive relief would be appropriate, nor did they put solid justifications for damages into play." Well, after cooling down a bit, the two companies are at it again; they both filed appeals to Judge Richard Posner's dismissal on July 20, 2012.
Judge Posner, author of a number of scholarly books on law and economics, is considered an antitrust law expert, and volunteered to preside over the Apple v. Motorola

Corning and Samsung plan LCD glass plant in China, may toughen up a few laptop screens
Corning and Samsung were the best of friends well before even the Lotus Glass deal, but the relationship just got a little cozier. The two have agreed to build a plant in China's industry-heavy Wuxi New District focused on making glass to cover LCD panels in laptops and desktop displays. iPod touch seen getting 4-inch screen, 'buffed' aluminum
The next-generation iPod touch will be upgrading to a 4-inch screen like the next iPhone, according to an Asian source for Macotakara. The same source suggests that the CPU and other specifications will otherwise be similar to the iPhone 4S -- which uses an A5 processor -- but that the back will be different from both the 4S and the fourth-gen Touch. The online book seller has started closing in on excessive free web browsing, policing a 50MB data limit on its keyboard Kindle iterations. According to users on MobileRead, you'll still be able to browse Amazon's Kindle store and Wikipedia, but anything beyond that gets locked down. I already sang the praises of Fieldrunners 2 when it hit the App Store last week, but it's worth one more spotlight. Tower defense is one of the most well-traveled genres on the App Store, but Fieldrunners 2 really does bring a lot of innovation to it, and it does so in such a well-polished and perfectly crafted package that this game really is something special.

Apple vs Samsung, es geht weiter
Oh ja, Samsung vs. Apple: Es geht weiter. Und zwar gleich auf mehreren Fronten. Zum einen verlangt Apple von Samsung ordentlichen Schadenersatz . Zum anderen geht es (immer noch bzw. mal wieder) um die Galaxy Tab-Reihe.
Egal, was die Gründe für folgendes verhalten sind, in meinen Augen ist es eine wahre Schande. Die Sache nervt vor allem deshalb so sehr, weil sowohl Apple als auch Samsung sowieso schon so viel Geld verdienen. Ich will niemanden hier als Opfer bzw. als Täter hinstellen, denn die ganze Angelegenheit ist bei zwei überreichen Unternehmen einfach nur lächerlich. Aber ich will mal zur Sache kommen, denn ich habe mich schon genug über die Angelegenheit aufgeregt.

LG's voice recognition app studies English, aims to pass the test next year
LG's Quick Voice app's monolingual status shouldn't last long. After a quick restyle -- it's now Q Voice -- the app is gearing up to launch internationally with an English language version ready for the first half of next year. LG also adds a bit more detail on its voice recognition offering, which can pick out a single female voice in a noisy room full of men and have the ability to make settings adjustments to Bluetooth, sound and vibration by speech. Apple wins ban on Galaxy Tab 7.7, loses appeal on 10.1N
Apple has succeeded in winning an European Union-wide ban on the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, according to Reuters. The Duesseldorf Higher Court viewed the Galaxy Tab 7.7 in the same light as the previously banned Galaxy Tab 10.1 and have made a preliminary ruling that it infringes Apple's design patents. However, the same court also upheld a ruling that the redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1N is sufficiently different in design that it should be allowed to continue sales.

Last year, I was a big fan of the Great Little War Game for iOS -- what it lacked in the graphics department, it more than made up for in terms of tile-based tactical strategy (similar to Advance Wars or any of those other kinds of tactical war games). Now developer Rubicon has gone back to the well for a sequel, and the result is the Great Big War Game: It's exactly the same kind of title, only writ just a little larger.

Password entry requirement removed from iOS 6 beta 3
Advancing the password-removal trend that started with beta 1 of iOS 6, the latest build no longer requires a password when downloading free apps. The first beta of iOS 6 allowed developers to re-download purchased applications and updates without entering the iOS App Store account information, making this change an extension to the password removal. Many of the items available on the App Store are free, and do not charge the user's account.

Review: Kingston Wi-Drive wireless storage drive
One of the relatively few mistakes I think Apple's made with the iPad is omitting external storage. It's probably not a gaffe from their perspective, of course; they charge you far more for a 32 or 64GB upgrade than it actually costs to manufacture. The iPad is closer to a computer than an iPhone though, and thus has much higher demands for some people, especially when it comes to storage. Kingston's Wi-Drive is one of several available workarounds, and we'll put it to the test in our review.
