Reviews: Kingston Wi-Drive wireless storage drive
One of the relatively few mistakes I think Apple's made with the iPad is omitting external storage. It's probably not a gaffe from their perspective, of course; they charge you far more for a 32 or 64GB upgrade than it actually costs to manufacture. The iPad is closer to a computer than an iPhone though, and thus has much higher demands for some people, especially when it comes to storage. King

Chameleon Clock, selling for US $0.99, captures the background behind your iPad or iPhone using the built-in camera, then superimposes the time and date above that scene. The result is an illusion of a transparent iPad or iPhone. It can be very startling if seen from the right angle, where background and live clip line up perfectly. Juggernaut Alpha with Windows Phone 8 appears in benchmarks, shows how sharp it might be
A while back, we spotted the Juggernaut Alpha's unique and hard-to-forget moniker in a document listing a number of alleged upcoming Windows Phone 8 handsets, and now the device has managed to land itself in a purported set of early benchmarks. In-app purchase hack won't work in iOS 6, say coders
The IAP hack of the past few weeks allows users of iOS apps to make in-app purchases without actually paying. The hack is essentially a DNS exploit -- it fools apps running on your iPhone or iPad into thinking they're contacting Apple's in-app purchase servers when they actually are not. The Next Web reported that Apple has opened up a private API to developers who want to take advantage of countermeasures to prevent IAP hacks.

Apple gets paid for products faster than it has to pay for manufacturing
Here's yet another sign of what a great position Apple has put itself in in terms of manufacturing: According to the Wall Street Journal [paywall], the company gets paid by its customers much faster than it is required to pay its suppliers. The difference between the inflow of sales and the outflow of manufacturing capital means that Apple's capital investment is actually negative -- a sort of fiscal antigravity.
Apple is getting paid by customers after 18 days on average, but it has leveraged into a position where it has up to 83 days to pay its suppliers.

iOS 6: Kostenlose Apps erfordern keine Passwort-Eingabe
Nachdem Apple mit der iOS-6-Beta bereits die Passwort-Eingabe bei Updates oder schon gekauften Apps abgeschafft hatte, erlaubt die dritte Beta nun auch den “Kauf” von kostenlosen Apps ohne die Angabe eines Passworts.
Wie der Nutzer varmanj auf Reddit (via Cult Of Mac) entdeckt hat, können kostenlose Apps egal ob bereits gekauft oder nicht nun ohne die Eingabe des eigenen Passworts heruntergeladen werden.

Sources support adapter for iPhone 5 dock connector
Apple is indeed working on a dock adapter for the next-generation iPhone, say sources reached by iMore. The sources are the same that told the site about Apple's switch to a new connector format in February. At this point, the sources haven't said whether an adapter will be included in the box for the new phone, or if people will have to buy one separately. The site is sticking to an expected October timeframe for the upgraded iPhone's launch.

Apple briefly releases Mountain Lion Up-to-Date program, pulls it back
For those folks who purchased Macs after June 11 (myself included), Apple said that OS X Mountain Lion would be available as a free download. Ahead of this week's expected launch, Apple briefly unveiled its Up-to-Date program, which gets those buyers ready for their Mountain Lion upgrade, then pulled it back minutes later.
As shown on MacRumors, the form showed the information needed to redeem a license, including the user's Mac serial number. Apple gives the user a reference number, then sends a redemption code to be used to download Mountain Lion. T

Apple posts, pulls form for free Mountain Lion upgrades
Today Apple briefly posted a form for the OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date Program on its website before pulling it down again, accounts say. The program is designed to ensure that people who have bought a Mac since June 11th can upgrade to Mountain Lion for free, up to 30 days past Mountain Lion's release date. People who did manage to submit a form were sent two emails: one containing a password-locked redemption code, and a second email with the password in question. None of the redemption codes are believed to be working at the Mac App Store.

Toshiba REGZA T-02D smartphone launches in Japan: 'New AMOLED Plus' display, old resolution
Confusingly announced by Fujitsu, the Toshiba Regza T-02D will settle into a wall of similarly bright-colored, good-looking smartphones in NTT DoCoMo stores starting this week. ChangeWave: Advance demand for next-gen iPhone "off the charts"
Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt reported today on a new ChangeWave Research survey of purchasing plans for upcoming smartphones. The survey shows that the unannounced next-generation iPhone has an "unprecedented" amount of advance demand.
The survey offered 4,042 American consumers brief descriptions of both the currently available Samsung Galaxy S III and the features believed to be in the next-generation iPhone. A whopping 50 percent of respondents said they were planning to purchase an iPhone in the next 90 days, compared to 19 percent who said they'd be purchasing a Samsung phone. Keep in mind that's the iPhone 4S they're talking about -- not the next-generation device.

Apple spent about $470,000 lobbying US Congresspeople during the second quarter of 2012, versus Google's $3,920,000, Fortune notes. iPhone 101: Switching sound off (or down)
Today's iPhone 101 is all about audio volume. You may think that the volume toggle and the mute switch on the side of your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch are the beginning and end of noise control, but it turns out there's more to the iOS sound story.
You can get some volume management by plugging in a pair of headphones; that mutes the main speaker but also redirects your primary output to the headphones. When placed on your desk, you still may hear tiny bits of sound from the ear pieces. Having headphones connected does not affect the sounds from system alarms or incoming phone calls -- those still hit the main speaker.

Law firm that helped Proview to $60m iPad China settlement hasn't been paid
In a strangely humorous case of "what goes around comes around", the law firm that helped Chinese manufacturer Proview win a US$60 million settlement against Apple for use of the trademark "iPad" in China is now suing Proview to get back at least $2.4 million in legal fees that have been left unpaid.
The Grandall Law Firm was looking forward to a payday equivalent to 4 percent of Apple's settlement. Proview founder Yang Rongshan has apparently said that the law firm's actions are "nonsense," and that the company isn't obligated to pay the firm right now since it isn't operating under normal conditions.

Lawfirm sues Proview to claim fees from iPad trademark suit
The legal agency which represented Proview in its recently-settled lawsuit with Apple, Grandall Law Firm, is now suing its former client, reports say. Grandall says that Proview has failed to pay a promised 4 percent of Apple's payout, which translates to about $2.4 million. Apple settled with Proview for $60 million in order to secure use of the iPad trademark in mainland China.

Mojang sued for alleged patent infringement in Android version of Minecraft
Mojang has seen the sort of success that most game developers dream of with Minecraft, but it looks like it's now also found itself thrust into the rarely desirable world of patent lawsuits. As revealed by Minecraft creator Notch himself on Twitter, Mojang is being sued by the Texas-based Uniloc (which has also taken aim at Electronic Arts, Gameloft and others) over some alleged patent infringement in the Android version of Minecraft. New iPhone in production at Pegatron, sources allege
Pegatron has started production of the next-generation iPhone at its Shanghai plant, according to industry sources in Taiwan quoted by DigiTimes. Apple has been rumored as going into production this month, but the new claim is the first to explicitly state that work is underway. Canon intros mirrorless EOS M
Canon has officially unveiled its previously rumored mirrorless camera, the EOS M. The launch makes Canon the last of the large four manufacturers to use such a system, with Sony's NEX-C3, Nikon's J1 and V1, and Fujifilm's X-Pro 1 reaching the market earlier this year and late last year. Using an 18-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor with the DIGIC 5 image processor, the EOS M appears to match many of the specifications the Rebel T4i uses, if not sharing the physical appearance.

Samsung 3G case vs. Apple labeled 'ridiculous' by Judge
Australian Federal Court Justice Annabelle Bennett has labeled the case brought before the court by Samsung against Apple over 3G patents as "ridiculous," reports Bloomberg. Amazon plans for 'five or six' new tablets, will include 10-inch model, says Staples president
While we expect Amazon to refresh its Kindle Fire tablet sooner rather than later, Demos Parneros, president of US retail for Staples, has told Reuters that the online book-seller has bigger plans, and aims to introduce five or six new devices. According to the exec, the tablets will come in a range of sizes and would include a new ten-inch device -- going directly against another popular 10-inch slab. Telekom bestätigt: Neue iPhones ohne Netzsperre
Wer bislang bei der Telekom ein iPhone erwarb, erhielt dieses mit Netzsperre. Während der Vertragslaufzeit von 24 Monaten war es damit nicht möglich, SIM-Karten eines anderen Anbieters zu verwenden, außer man entrichtete nach Ablauf von mindestens 12 Monaten einen Pauschalbetrag. Während O2 ohnehin ohne Netzsperre verkaufte und Vodafone diese seit Ende 2011 nicht mehr implementierte, verzichtet jetzt auch die Telekom auf dieses Vorgehen.

Wer sein Produkt auf Mobil-Geräten bewerben will, bewirbt es am effizientesten auf dem iPhone und iPad. Einer Studie zufolge bringt Werbung vor allem auf dem iPad viele Klicks, aber auch das iPhone liegt noch vor dem Hauptkonkurrenten Android. Die Konkurrenz liegt weit zurück.
Das Unternehmen Opera Software, das nicht nur den gleichnamigen Browser entwickelt, sondern auch ein Werbe-Netzwerk betreibt, hat ermittelt, dass der “eCPM-Wert” bei iOS-Werbung am höchsten liegt. eCPM steht für “effective cost per mille”, also “effektive Kosten pro Tausend” – der Wert erfasst, wie viele Klicks sich durch wie viele Werbeschaltungen erreichen lassen.
