Electric plane performs taxi tests as prelude to transatlantic attempt (video)
EV flyer Long-ESA has started high-speed taxi tests on its quest to become the first electric airplane to cross the Atlantic. Using a Long-EZ kit plane designed by Burt Rutan as a platform for the volts-only powertrain, the Flight of the Century project is the brainchild of electric enthusiast Chip Yates, who already holds the speed record of 190MPH on an EV motorcycle. Apple gives iPhone 3GS owners some love, lets them taste Shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail in iOS 6
Anyone who's been scanning to see who gets what in iOS 6 has noticed that the iPhone 3GS is the red-headed stepchild of the family -- some features that really don't need a cutting-edge phone have been left on the chopping block. Apple is showing those owners some TLC, after all, by officially flicking on support for Shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail lists through the entire iOS 6-ready device list. Briefly: Sonos mobile app updated, Raspberry Pi OS
The Sonos Controller app for Android and iOS devices received an update today that improves functionality and adds features to both versions. A blog post on Sonos' web page described the new features, chief among which is optimization for 7-inch and 10-inch Android tablets. The Android version also supports landscape mode and features a resized album art screen. The iOS version is now optimized for display on Retina devices, and users can now control the volume on a Sonos system using the physical volume buttons on their devices.

Socialcam sells to Autodesk for $60 million
Autodesk has added yet another feather to its growing cap, buying mobile video sharing app Socialcam for a price of $60 million. Socialcam was launched only about 18 months ago, but it's been a big hit since then, attracting lots of high profile investors and a prestigious spot at the Y Combinator startup accelerator.
Autodesk's purchase likely means Socialcam will continue to grow. There are only four employees at the moment (which in itself is pretty spectacular for a purchase like this), so of course there will be some more hires, and presumably Autodesk will look at integrating the company's technology in its own apps.

OneNote MX Metro-styled app for Windows 8 now available for download
Yesterday saw Microsoft publicly unpack Office 15. Part of the deal was the forthcoming dedicated OneNote MX Metro-styled app. While we knew it was coming, it was one of the few things we didn't manage to get much time with. It looks like we might not have to wait that long though, as it's the first of new gang to be up for grabs. Intel vermeldet höhere Umsätze und stagnierende Gewinne

Mozilla releases Firefox 14 with encrypted Google searches
Mozilla has made Firefox version 14 available for download. The update introduces auto-completion of URLs typed into the Awesome Bar, along with encrypted Google searches enabled by default, to shield personal details from parties collecting data through the network infrastructure. The Pointer Lock API has also been added, allowing developers to improve mouse control for games and Internet applications.

Skype pushes out hotfixes for IM security bug
Skype is now releasing hotfixes addressing a serious security flaw in its VoIP client, according to a blog post. If a few recent versions of the app crashed during the middle of an IM session, they would sometimes send out the last recorded message to the wrong person on a user's contact list. The glitch was also contingent on rebooting Skype, or logging in as a new user.

WSJ: iPhone future includes thinner screen, other details cloudy
Today's Wall Street Journal includes an interesting story about a screen technology that may make an appearance in the next iPhone.
Based on sources in the supply chain and "people familiar with the matter," the WSJ says that LCD panel makers Sharp and LG, plus a new Japanese consortium called Display Inc., are all busy manufacturing screens for the next iPhone that feature "in-cell technology" to support touch sensitivity. Companies that have traditionally supplied the touch panels, like Taiwan's Wintek, are supposedly out in the cold with next-gen orders.

Intel reports Q2 earnings: rakes in $13.5 billion, pockets $2.8 billion
Intel is back to its old games in Q2 of 2012, raking in $13.5 billion during the second three month financial period of the year, up from $12.9 billion in the first quarter and a solid five percent year over year. Of that impressive pile of cash, Chipzilla was able to pocket $2.8 billion in net income, up $100,000 from Q1 and three percent from the same time period last year. That equates to a healthy $0.57 per share in earnings, which should make investors happy. PC Client Group enjoyed slow but steady growth, seeing its revenues grow by three percent, but the big story is the Data Center division with saw revenues climb 14 percent to to $2.8 billion sequentially.

D-Link outs its first router with 802.11ac Wi-Fi
D-Link has began shipping its first router equipped with 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology, or what the maker calls 5G. The Cloud Router 5700 (DIR-865L) is said to be capable of reaching speeds of up to 1,750Mbps speeds when operating in this dual mode, which is made up of 1,300Mbps wireless-AC and 450Mbps wireless-N speeds. It also ships with the Cloud App, which lets owners monitor and control the home network remotely.

Former iAd head Andy Miller joins Leap Motion as president
Andy Miller, the former head of Apple's iAd division, has now taken a job as the president and COO of Leap Motion, Fortune says. Miller actually left Apple last August, becoming a general partner at a firm called Highland Capital Partners. The move to Leap Motion will bring him back into the Mac world, since Leap is currently developing a gesture-based control system for Macs, similar in concept to Microsoft's Kinect technology.

PlayFirst to release Hotel Transylvania Dash for iPhone and iPad
PlayFirst has announced a collaboration with Sony that will result in a new version of its popular Hotel Dash iOS title called "Hotel Transylvania Dash," for a tie-in with the upcoming movie of the same name. A couple of well-known apps have received updates today providing all of the Retina display love that you've been waiting for. 1Password for Mac and the Sonos Controller apps for iPhone and iPad now have bazillions of more pixels for your viewing pleasure.

TweetDeck 1.5 gets quicker navigation options
Twitter has released TweetDeck 1.5, an update of its optional desktop client. Web, Windows, Chrome, and Mac versions of the client are available. The new code is meant to speed up navigation, for instance by arranging columns in a single row for quick scrolling using the scrollbar. Clicking a new Columns button displays a full list of open columns, and arrows to either side let users scroll several columns at a time.

Another important change in iOS 6 beta 3 is the addition of shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail filters to the iPhone 3GS, notes MacRumors. Bertrand Serlet joins Parallels board of directors
This just in Parallels, the company behind the popular Parallels Desktop virtualization software for Mac OS X, announced that Bertrand Serlet has been appointed to the company's board of directors. Serlet was the senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, and was responsible for the development of Mac OS X from its beginning until his departure from Apple last August.

Google searches for criminals in bid to reduce global crime
Google's pretty much aced searching for your latest whim, so now it's turning its efforts to criminals. Working with the Council on Foreign Relations, the internet giant has been exploring ways of using its technology for the greater good. Yahoo reports that Google Ideas will meet with the CFR (and other groups) this week to develop global crime fighting strategies. MacBook refresh giving overall Mac sales a boost
The new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models that appeared on June 11, 2012 helped overall Mac sales during the remainder of the month, according to NPD sales data reported by John Paczkowski at AllThingsD.
During the month of June, Mac sales grew 1 percent year over year. While that doesn't sound like much, sales had fallen 13 percent in April and 23 percent in May. For Apple's complete 3rd quarter ending June 30, 2012, Mac sales are still down 10 percent from a year ago. However, Paczkowski believes that the recovery from the 23 percent decline in May is a positive sign.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster agrees, saying that "the refreshed Macs will enable Apple to sustain a better growth profile

Sync Services change in 10.7.4 disables BusySync, Spanning Sync
For many years, Sync Services has provided the backbone for synchronization of other devices to Macs running OS X. A change that was part of OS X 10.7.4 has apparently stopped iCal from pushing changes to Sync Services, breaking some very popular synchronization applications -- BusySync and Spanning Sync.
The Spanning Sync official blog notes that:
This bug also affects other sync apps including BusySync and Blackberry Sync. It's unclear whether Apple intends to fix this bug.

Moto Xoom doesn't violate iPad design, German court rules
A German court has ruled that the Motorola Xoom tablet doesn't infringe on three Apple design concepts for the iPad, according to Dow Jones. Had the court ruled in Apple's favor, the Xoom could potentially have been banned across Europe. The court has also, however, rejected a counterclaim by Motorola alleging that the iPad's design patent is invalid. As a result, Apple has been ordered to pay two-thirds of the costs of legal proceedings, and Motorola a third.

Qantas plans to ditch BlackBerry, adopt iPhone
Australia's Sunday Morning Herald reports that Qantas is set to replace 1,300 BlackBerry phones with iPhones. Skype confirms fix rolling out for instant messaging bug
When one of your main services throws up a pretty embarrassing bug, you're going to want to squash that quick. Skype has stepped up and done just that, according to its blog. The hotfix will be rolling out for version 5.10 for Windows, 5.8 for Mac, 4.0 for Linux and 1.2 for Windows Phone. Skype was also quick to point out that not all clients (and therefore users) were affected. If you were on 5.9 for Windows, version 2.8 for Android or Skype 4.0 for iOS, then the firm assures you that you won't be affected. I just love maps. I always have. I used to spend hours with the Delorme Street Atlas CD-ROM until the company dropped Mac support. Of course the CD map business is mostly dead with online maps and easy access from computers, smartphones, and tablets.

WSJ: Next iPhone to have even thinner screen
Apple's next smartphone iteration will reportedly pack new screen technology that shaves a small amount from the screen thickness. According to the Wall Street Journal's sources, the new in-cell technology integrates the touch sensor into the screen, shedding around half a millimeter and due to the reduced space between screen and user, could well improve image quality. Weltrekord: 330 Schüler verkleiden sich als Handys (leider nicht als Smartphones)

Im britischen Caterham haben sich 330 Schüler in selbstgebastelte Handy-Kostümen versammelt und damit einen Weltrekord aufgestellt, natürlich für einen guten Zweck. Außer der Spendensammellei war die Aktion allerdings ziemlich sinnfrei, was irgendwie schade ist, schließlich haben viele selbstgemachte Kostüme auf einem Haufen eigentlich ein großes Schabernackpotential - bleibt zu hoffen, dass die zu erwartenden Weltrekorde mit Smartphone-Verkleidungen dann auch schlauer ausfallen.

Former Apple VP Bertrand Serlet joins Parallels board
Apple's former Senior VP of Mac OS Software Bertrand Serlet has joined the board of directors at Parallels, the virtualization software company in a non-executive role. Serlet, who did stints involving both science and programming at Xerox PARC as well as Steve Jobs' former company NeXT, left Apple last year to focus "less on products and more on science." His role at Parallels will be to help supply additional vision and direction for both its flagship product and its server-management tools.

Ziemlich überraschend kam die Nachricht, dass Marissa Mayer, die bisher bei Google Vice President nun das reichlich angeschlagene Yahoo als CEO übernehmen wird. Mayer war bei Google die Angestellte Nr. 20 und unter anderem für die Entwicklung von Google News, Gmail und Orkut sowie den Look der Google-Hauptseite verantwortlich. Der Job bei Yahoo die im letzten Quartal gerade mal ein Prozent mehr Umsatz machen konnten, dürfte hart werden: seit letztem Jahr hat Yahoo insgesamt drei CEOs verschlissen und auch Interims-CEO Ross Levinsohn, der bisher allgemein als gesetzt galt, scheint nun vor der Aufgabe kapituliert zu haben.

Some users of Apple's Thunderbolt display and the new 2012 MacBook Air line have discovered that after a few hours' use, the display's speakers distort, crackle, and emit a static noise. Apple recruitment video takes us inside Infinite Loop
A new video was recently released by Apple for recruiting purposes, but perhaps most interesting for us, it is a quick glimpse inside the company's culture. Yes, it's an official video, so things don't get down and dirty at all, but there are definitely some good looks inside the offices, as well as some of the high-quality design thinking behind Apple's extraordinary devices.
Developing the iPad 2 Smart Cover, for example, apparently involved what sounds like a very complex computer simulation of a magnetic field. As one person in the video says, "You don't really know how much work goes on under the surface, but there's a lot."
The video also shows how single-minded Apple can be about quality. They even say that they usually just ignore what others in their markets have done, aiming instead to

Adobe offers fix for InDesign crash on new MacBooks
Following up on our previous story, Adobe is now offering a ZIP archive of replacement files and instructions for 2012 MacBook Air and Pro model users running OS X 10.7.4 on how to manually patch a bug that causes InDesign (CS5 and higher) to fail on those machines. Though not as simple as a patch installer, the company's instructions are clear and relatively easy to follow -- and appear to fix the issue, which centered around how a particular API handles icon management.

Local notification spam: devs please don't do that
Want to know a quick road to a bad user app review? Local notification spam. Frankly, we're sick of it. You spam us, we'll toss your app off our phones like *snap* that.
Just because local notifications don't require opt-in doesn't mean that developers should abuse them for marketing. Here's a rule of thumb: if your notification doesn't deliver information that your user specifically requested, don't send it.

G.A.U.N.T.L.E.T. trades in keyboard and touchscreen typing for sweaty hands (video)
Between touchscreens and physical keyboards, you'd thing that handset manufacturers have most of their bases covered. Briefly: Raspberry Pi, BioLite Campstove, Xbox LIVE app
The Raspberry Pi miniature computer will be getting a camera add-on later this year. CNet UK reports that the credit card-sized computer Linux computer will see its first add-on in the form of a camera module with a 5MP sensor. The module plugs into the Pi and takes still pictures and video. The module is expected to cost between $20 and $25 and will likely arrive some time in the next three months.

Qantas replacing staff BlackBerrys with iPhones, Australian flights may be held up by Tiny Wings

Telecoms stockpiling nano-Sim cards ahead of iPhone 5
Apple's European mobile partners are preparing for the launch of the iPhone 5 by placing multiple orders with chipmakers for the nano-Sim card that will likely be featured in the smartphone. The device has yet to be announced, but The Financial Times reports that operators have begun ordering the cards by the millions in anticipation. The move is said to be a way of avoiding supply problems operators experienced when the iPhone 4 and original iPad launched two years ago.

iCloud email addresses rolling out via iOS 6 beta 3
Apple released a new version of iOS 6 beta 3 today, and in the changelog for that release, there's a note that the transition from me.com email addresses to icloud.com email addresses for iCloud users has begun. Users that are signing up for the first time will get icloud.com addresses, and anyone using iOS 6 beta 3 will be transitioned over to the new domain with their same email name.
Already, a few users are calling foul, since me.com is obviously a shorter name to type out than icloud.com. But this is the transition Apple has been planning for a while, and so what's done is done. Perhaps Apple will finally
