Dutch telco KPN using deep packet inspection to monitor mobile customers, throttle services

KPN set off some alarms in Holland last month when it announced a plan to start charging customers separate fees for using VoIP, streaming video, and sending instant messages. Adobe posts finished Flash 10.3 for Android, desktops

Adobe chose Thursday evening to launch the completed version of Flash 10.3. Both the desktop plugin and the Android version (free, Market) bring noise cancellation for features like livestreaming or video chat as well as control panels and privacy controls native to the given platform. Wi-Fi connection issues resurface with iOS 4.3.3

Some iOS devices are once again having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots, accounts say. Both media reports and posts on Apple's support forums indicate that after applying the iOS 4.3.3 update, an iOS device may start spontaneously dropping connections, repeatedly disconnect and reconnect, or even fail to connect at all. In some cases Wi-Fi status is misreported, or a stable link may involve staying too close to the router.

Austausch von Hauptfestplatten bei neuen iMacs unmöglich

Laut Other World Computing soll Apple den SATA-Power-Connector in den neuen Sandy Bridge-iMacs so geändert haben, dass die Lüfter mit Maximalgeschwindigkeit laufen, sollte man die Festplatte entfernen. Weiterhin werden neu eingebaute Festplatten den Apple Hardware Test nicht bestehen, auch wenn das gleiche Modell Festplatte verbaut wird. 17% of smartphone owners use check-in apps

comScore, a market research firm that measures trends in the digital world has released a study that shows just how mobile the world has become. Their research reveals that many mobile and smartphone users checked in using mobile apps such Facebook Places, Foursquare and Gowalla. The study, which surveyed users in March, found that 16.7 million, or 7.1 percent of the total US mobile subscriber base used location-based ìcheck-inî services on their phones. 17.6 percent of the estimated 12.7 million smartphone owners now use these services.

Flash Player 10.3 hits Android with optimizations, bug fixes aplenty

It's been saying that it was coming "soon" since March, and Adobe has now finally delivered Flash Player 10.3 to compatible Android devices. Flash Decompiler Trillix for Mac 5.0 adds XFL support, more

Eltima has released an update to its Flash conversion software for the Mac, Flash Decompiler Trillix for Mac 5.0. The app converts SWF to FLA and decompiles SWF files, exporting elements like images, sounds, videos, scripts, shapes, morphs, fonts, texts and sprites to other formats. Version 5.0 supports conversion to Flash CS5 XML-based XFL, adds binary tag support in an SWF elements tree, and improves data binding for Flex applications. Netflix adds captioning to iOS apps

Adding captioning to movies in Netflix for the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone is going to be a big deal for a lot of people, and Netflix has added that feature today. It's already present when you watch Netflix movies with a browser on a desktop or laptop, but now mobile users can take advantage of captions as well. Unfortunately, not all films have this feature. If there is captioning, a little voice balloon icon will appear on the volume control. Tap it and select English, which is the only option for now. I tried it in several movies, and about half the ones I sampled have the feature. The captions are in yellow text and are easy to read. EU to recommend location data must be opt-in

The European Union's Article 29 Working Party regulator group said on Thursday that it would put out a non-binding opinion that would set the direction for location data on smartphones and other devices. The statement would call on companies to assume location was personal information and get permission, avoid tying location to a person, and purge the information after a certain amount of time. It could serve as a possible guideline, however, for future action by the European Commission or individual countries that would make location privacy a requirement.

WebGL flaw leaves GPU exposed to hackers

Google spent a lot of time yesterday talking up WebGL, but UK security firm Context seems to think users should disable the feature because it poses a serious security threat, and the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) is encouraging people to heed that advice. According to Context, a malicious site could pass code directly to a computer's GPU and trigger a denial of service attack or simply crash the machine. OWC: Replacing main hard drive with third party is not an option in new iMacs

Netflix releases Android app for select HTC phones, Samsung Nexus S

Well, it looks like the LG Revolution won't be the first Android phone to get Netflix after all. The app has just hit the Android Market and is apparently available for the HTC Incredible, Nexus One, Evo 4G, and G2, plus the Samsung Nexus S. AT&T would pay $6 billion to T-Mobile if merger fails

Two ontacts said Thursday that AT&T's buyout of T-Mobile could be expensive even if blocked by the US government. Terms in the deal reportedly require AT&T pay T-Mobile a $6 billion breakup fee if it can't be completed. Reuters understood that, while $3 billion in cash was already public, there would still be a deal for $2 billion in spectrum and a $1 billion roaming deal.

The ability to copy and paste text is a staple of the modern OS. Even iOS can do it, but on the Mac, the default clipboard behavior can be a bit limiting at times. CmdVees is a little US$0.99 Mac App Store utility that acts as an extension to the OS X clipboard, allowing sequential clippings instead of forcing one copy to overwrite the next. Verizon sends out OTA update for the HTC Thunderbolt, lacks fix for LTE

At long last, Verizon's finally giving us that OTA firmware update for the Thunderbolt we caught wind of a few weeks back. Owners of the flagship device can grab it now through a manual download, and the good news is that it's meant to fix some connectivity issues. Bad news is it's just for 3G. The new code is also meant to stabilize data-dependent apps, speed up GPS updates for Google Maps and VZ Navigator, and fix a few minor messaging glitches. Changes to 2011 iMac deter main drive upgrades

Apple has made modifications to the 2011 iMac which essentially prevent people from doing third-party upgrades to the main hard drive, according to upgrade vendor Other World Computing. The flaw is said to lay with the SATA power connector for the main bay, which has switched from a 4-pin configuration to 7-pin. Ciscos drittes Quartal übertrifft Erwartungen trotz Gewinnrückgang

Cisco hat in seinem dritten Geschäftsquartal (bis 30. April) einen GAAP-Gewinn von 1,8 Milliarden Dollar (1,3 Milliarden Euro) oder 0,33 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. Shortages may foul Q2 plans for 20m iPhones, 7.5m iPads

Apple updates iPhoto to 9.1.3, fixes splitting issue

Apple today released a minor update to iPhoto, now at version 9.1.3, to correct an issue where merged events would spontaneously be split back into separate events when synched with an iOS device. Apple says 50% of iPad readers opt in on giving info

Apple on Wednesday confirmed that the sudden flood of iTunes magazine subscriptions available in recent days was due to a change of heart by publishers. Internet services VP Eddy Cue told tablet magazine publisher Nomad Editions' Mark Edmiston that publishers had found about 50 percent of all readers voluntarily providing their names and e-mail addresses when asked.
