NEC's VersaPro VK15V/TM-C looks like a tablet, runs like a netbook
If you've been looking in vain for the right Windows tablet, you might want to have a gander at NEC's VersaPro VK15V/TM-C, a pad that looks like the slate it is, but packs some netbook-like specs -- namely, a 1.5GHz Intel Atom Z670 processor, Win 7 Professional, 2GB of RAM, HDMI-out, and an SDHC slot. And while it's 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) display is par for the course among Windows tablets, its 64GB SSD storage bests some other slabs on the market. Apple TV 4.2.2 update fixes audio, video glitches
Apple has released a minor firmware update for the second-generation Apple TV, v4.2.2. The patch is concerned exclusively with bugfixes and performance improvements. In the latter category, for instance, audio output can now be set to 16-bit, which enables compatibility with more TVs and AV receivers. Performance should be smoother when rewinding or fast-forwarding live events.

Apple aktualisiert Apple TV Software auf Version 4.2.2
Apple hat in letzter Stunde ein Update für das aktuelle Apple TV veröffentlicht. Nachdem Version 4.2.1 vor sieben Wochen erschien ist nun Version 4.2.2 (Buildnummer 8F305) erhältlich. Das Update behebt ausschließlich Bugs und verbessert die Stabilität, neue Funktionen gibt es so wie schon in letztem Update nicht.Genauere Informationen, welche Fehler behoben sind, gibt Apple leider nicht preis.Das 319 MB große Update kann entweder direkt mit dem Apple TV oder am Computer installiert werden.

Google TV shows off new Honeycomb UI, plans for Market, SDK
Google I/O is still ongoing and at the session for teaching developers how to build Android apps for Google TV the team has just shown off a quick peek of the new Honeycomb-based UI that will be released later this year. Apple 'looking into' legal status of DUI checkpoint apps
Apple is "looking into" whether or not it should pull DUI checkpoint apps from the App Store, according to the company's VP of software technology, Guy Tribble. Tribble spoke yesterday during a US Senate subcommittee on mobile privacy. Beyond concerns about location data, the VP was also brought to task over DUI apps by Senator Charles Schumer.

Industrial robots do Star Wars better than Lucas
At the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Shanghai, industrial robot company Yasakawa equipped a couple of its manufacturing machines with lightsabers and choreographed a violent ballet for them to perform. The resulting battle is more exhilarating than the duel at the end of Phantom Menace and the performances are less lifeless than those in Attack of the Clones. Gartner sees SSDs costing $1 per gigabyte in 2012
Gartner, an industry market research firm covering the computer and IT market, predicts that prices for SSD (Solid State Drive) storage drives will drop below $1 per gigabyte in the second half of 2012. That's about 1/2 of current prices. SSDs, which use NAND flash technology are smaller, more power efficient and faster than conventional hard drives, but their high price and smaller capacities have limited their attractiveness to the consumer market. A traditional hard drive has capacity of up to 3TB, for which prices can be as low as 5-cents per gigabyte.

Apple has yet to update its Apple TV software update support page, so it is unclear what bug fixes or other improvements might be included in the update. Android Market gets new overhaul, borrows from App Store
A Google I/O post-keynote presentation and a post Wednesday revealed that Google is yet again revamping Android Market. The store will now be much more visual and, similar to the iOS Apple Store, have banners and other elements highlighting apps instead of the carousel of today. Users will also get Apple-like app recommendations based on their history as well as similar categories, such as Top Grossing for expensive apps and a Trending area for rapidly rising apps, TechCrunch and others in attendance saw.

Augmented reality may be taking the next giant step forward with CrowdOptic, an app that will provide a graphic data overlay for live events. If you are at a concert (with the system in place), point the app at the stage and you'll get details such as in the picture above. Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 leaked, expected to launch tomorrow
Panasonic is rumored to be launching the Lumix DMC-G3 tomorrow, the update to its Micro Four Thirds G2. According to 43 Rumors, the new cam will be 25 percent smaller than its predecessor, and will include a 15.8 megapixel sensor and a 3-inch articulating LCD. Googles Chrome Webstore ist weltweit online, Angry Birds auch schon da

Jetzt kommt die komplette User-Base (laut Google etwa 160 Millionen weltweit) in den Genuß des Chrome Web Stores und das in 41 verschiedenen Sprachen. Es gibt In-App Purchases die "mit einer Zeile Code" von Entwicklern implementiert werden können und Google verspricht, die Sache einfach zu halten, in dem sie Entwicklern fünf Prozent Gewinnbeteiligung abnehmen, was gegen die 30 % beim App Store ja recht genügsam klingt. Bis jetzt soll es 17 Millionen App-Downloads im Chrome Webstore gegeben haben. Angry Birds ist dort übrigens jetzt auch aufgeschlagen (siehe Quelle-Link).

Google announces five new ways to discover apps on Android Market
Android Market may have a lot going for it, but most would surely agree that it could use some improvement when it comes to discovering apps that you aren't specifically looking for. Music labels say Apple's cloud better than Google, Amazon
Music label insiders said Wednesday that they understood Apple's iCloud music to be better services like Amazon's Cloud Player or Google Music Beta. They claimed that neither of the existing services could have the "same range of options" without saying what those were. In passing information along to CNET, they were worried Amazon and Google would get acceptance and wouldn't upgrade service, hinting that they thought Apple planned to charge for its option.

Chrome store expands, takes 5% cut, gets Angry Birds on web
During the day two keynote at Google I/O 2011, the company revealed its Chrome Web Store has been launched to 160 million users of the browser and in 41 languages. There is good news for developers too, as Google will only take a five percent cut, with 95 percent of app revenues going to the developer's pocket. Don't blame iPad for PC sales stagnation, says NPD
A new study released by the NPD Group on Tuesday suggests a recent decline in personal computer shipments can't be blamed on the iPad. NPD's results contradict conventional wisdom which assumed shiny new gadgets like Apple's iPad were eroding the PC market.
According to NPD's figures, a significant majority of iPad owners never had plans to buy a PC. Only 14% of the study's "early adopters," or customers who bought the iPad more than six months ago, chose the Apple tablet instead of a personal computer. Google adds Netflix and Hulu support, offline Gmail, Calendar and Docs to Chrome OS 'this summer'
Google's currently in the process of detailing Chrome OS' latest improvements and there are a couple of big 'uns: Netflix and Hulu support will be available right out of the box for the pair of new Chromebooks -- one from Samsung and one from Acer. An improved file manager has also been added to the upcoming version of Chrome OS, plus offline versions of Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs -- all will be made available for Chromebook users this summer.

April Apple sales up 113 percent over 2010, says analyst
Apple sales appear to have grown about 113 percent year-over-year in April, says Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. The estimate is based on what White calls the "Apple Barometer," a collection of Taiwanese suppliers Apple is dependent on and who in turn are dependent on Apple. About 50 to 60 percent of the revenue in the barometer group is based on Apple, White observes. He cautions that there tends to be "lag" between when suppliers recognize sales and when Apple actually ships products.

Huadian promises to directly clone iPad 2
Chinese electronics maker Huadian has stated it will soon build a tablet that will mimic many of the design features of Apple's very popular iPad 2. These include an alloy contstruction, 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen and identical 8.8mm thickness. According to GizChina, the device will be noticeably inferior on the inside and sport an 800MHz AMLogic CPU, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of flash memory. Apple pulls iAds from apps for kids
Mike Zonrek reports that Apple has suddenly removed iAds from kid-focused applications in the App Store. Zonrek is the developer behind Dex, a Pokémon-browser which has been downloaded over 500,000 times and is a favorite among kids who are into Pokemon.
Zonrek uses a combination of iAds, AdMob and in-app purchases to generate revenue from his app. Late last week, Zonrek noticed his iAd fill rate had fallen from 16.5% to zero. Concerned by the drop, he fired off an email to Apple to find out what happened. Apple responded with the following statement:

Google makes Chome Web Store available worldwide, adds in-app purchases and flat five percent fee
Google has just announced that it's making the Chrome Web Store available to the "entire userbase of Chrome," and in 41 different languages no less. It seems that those outside the current markets will only have access to free apps initially, though. What's more, it's also now added in-app purchases to the mix -- which it notes developers can add to their apps with "literally one line of code" -- and it's announced that it plans to "keep it simple" with a flat five percent fee instead of some of the more complicated fee structures out there.

Yet another platform has been conquered by the angered aviaries: the web! It's built in WebGL, so presumably browsers other than Google's Chrome should be able to run it as well, and even if you can't run WebGL, there's Canvas support too. 60fps are promised on most modern PCs, and we've spotted SD and HD labels, suggesting there'll be a choice of quality to match your computer's performance. NPD Group: iPad nicht schuld an schwächelndem PC-Markt

iFlowReader to close, blames Apple e-book policies
iOS app and e-book vendor iFlowReader is shutting down as of May 31st, according to an announcement. "We absolutely do not want to do this, but Apple has made it completely impossible for anyone but Apple to make a profit selling contemporary ebooks on any iOS device," part of the statement reads. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a new network that will bring emergency alerts for hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disasters to consumer cellphones. Motorola Xoom WiFi to get Android 3.1 update within the 'next several weeks'
Google said yesterday that the new limited edition Galaxy Tab 10.1 would be getting updated to Android 3.1 in the next couple of weeks, and it looks like it will be a similar situation with the WiFi-only Xoom. Motorola has just announced that it will receive the update "within the next several weeks." Visa plans NFC mobile wallet for the fall
Visa as it promised last week provided early details of a new mobile payment system. The company is creating a mobile wallet that would use NFC wireless along with the credit card firm's payWave app for buying items in stores and online as well as payments between device owners. Apple sued again over location data
Apple is facing another lawsuit over its handling of location data, according to a report from The Loop. The latest complaint was filed by Lymaris M. Rivera Diaz in the United States District Court for the District Of Puerto Rico.
Riveria is asking for monetary damages stemming from Apple's alleged practice of capturing both the device ID and location of a handset and sending it to third-party advertisers. Besides Apple, Diaz also cites The Weather Channel and Pandora in the suit.
The suit also names 10 'John Doe' defendants. This tactic is used in lawsuits when the plaintiff believes there are more targets to sue, but can't name them specifically until after the su

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 coming May 17th, with Gorilla Glass screen and spill-proof keyboard (video)
Man, Lenovo isn't even trying to keep the ThinkPad X1 under wraps anymore. The slinky new MacBook Air competitor has just slipped out in a video commercial on the company's own YouTube channel, where it shows off its keyboard, which is both backlit and spill-resistant, and its Gorilla Glass screen, which is apparently girlfriend-proof. Cisco Cius due for AT&T with HSPA+, faces crucial delay
Cisco both bolstered and faced setbacks its plans for tablets in the workforce with plans for an AT&T-native version of the Cius. Effizienz dank Instapaper
Instapaper ist ein “Später lesen”-Dienst. Kurz gesagt: Wann immer man auf etwas interessantes stößt, liest man es nicht sofort oder speichert einen Bookmark ab, sondern schiebt es in Instapaper rein. Instapaper existiert als Website, iPhone-App, iPad-App und kann gemerkte Artikel als ePub-Format (für iBooks) oder im Magazinformat für Amazons Kindle exportieren (letzteres auch mit Versand an die Amazon-E-Mail-Adresse). Das Lesen unterscheidet sich vom Studium der Website, da Instapaper den reinen Text und die Artikelbilder darstellt, aber von Navigation, Werbung und dem regulären Seitenlayout befreit.
Ich verwende es seit mittlerweile vier Jahren, zuerst als Website, ab Juli 2008 dann auch als App für das iPhone und iPad. Vier Jahre sind eine lange Zeit, betrachtet man die Fluktuation von Apps, zumal mir zu Beginn gänzlich unklar war, was ich eigentlich damit anfangen soll.

Pomplamoose covers the Angry Birds theme
I'm a big fan of Pomplamoose, the fun indie duo of musicians Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn that often posts song covers on YouTube, and I was happy to see that their latest cover is directly iPhone-related. They're apparently big fans of Angry Birds, and they've put together a "videosong" cover of the popular smartphone game's theme song. The cynical among you may be inspired to try and fight the cheer in the video on the next page (especially since the video seems to be promoted by some Samsung smartphone), but let's keep that to a minimum, shall we? If you were glued to your computer during the live broadcast of the Google I/O keynote this morning, you might have noticed a new feature accompanying an otherwise recognizable YouTube video. The online video provider used this morning's conference kickoff as the springboard for its live captioning feature, which brings human input to the transcription process. iFlow Reader calls it quits, abandons App Store
Back in February, Apple introduced a change to the App Store rules. Sadly, today that change has caused the people behind iFlowReader to shutter their business because "Apple is giving us the boot by making it financially impossible for us to survive." Users of the e-book reader app are being warned to back up their data carefully, or they might lose access to the content they have purchased through it.

Everyone knows how protective Apple is over its trademarks. Now, one Dutch company has had to change its name just to gets its apps back on Apple's App Store. As MacWorld UK points out, Dutch app maker App Stores BV -- the legal name of the company -- had all its apps pulled from the App Store at the end of March after Apple alleged that the company's name infringed on its App Store trademark. 8,6 Millionen Bürger geben Steuererklärung 2010 per Elster ab
Im Jahr 2010 wurden 8,6 Millionen elektronische Einkommensteuerklärungen über das System Elster online abgegeben, wie der Bitkom auf Grundlage aktueller Daten der Finanzverwaltungen mitteilt. Damit stieg die Zahl gegenüber dem Vorjahr nur um 300.000 oder vier Prozent an. Der Branchenverband war schon für 2009 davon ausgegangen, dass die 10-Millionen-Grenze überschritten wird.

Apple TV überzeugt im Kassensturz-Test
Seit vergangenem Jahr bietet Apple nun auch in der Schweiz ein Video-on-Demand-Angebot an. Besitzer von Apple TV können direkt über das Gerät Filme aus dem iTunes-Katalog ausleihen und anschauen. In der gestrigen Ausgabe der Sendung Kassensturz des Schweizer Fernsehens wurden sieben in der Schweiz verfügbare Video-on-Demand-Angebote getestet und beurteilt. Neben Apple TV wurden unter anderem die Angebote von Swisscom, Orange und upc cablecom unter die Lupe genommen. Als einzige Angebote erhielten Apple TV und Swisscom TV das Prädikat «gut». Apple TV überzeugte durch die einfache Bedienung und verhältnismässig gute Mietkonditionen. Ausserdem weist Apple TV das beste Filmangebot auf, wobei die Filmauswahl auch bei Apple TV noch immer sehr beschränkt ist. Aus einer Liste von 100 Filmen waren 36 im iTunes-Katalog vorhanden. Flipboard daily usage higher than ever, triples in two months
Despite losing truckloads of money, iPad magazine The Daily is apparently seeing a lot of traffic, and content aggregation app Flipboard is seeing the same trend. CEO Mike McCue says the company is seeing a huge slope upwards in traffic, with an average of 8 to 9 million "flips" (essentially pageviews), up from 3 to 4 million just a few months ago. That's some solid growth, probably driven both by sales of the iPad 2 and by tablet growth in general. As we've reported before, as more people learn to use tablets, more people (as you'd expect) actually use tablets.

Microsoft hat gestern die grösste Übernahme der 36-jährigen Firmengeschichte angekündigt: Die Firma aus Redmond übernimmt Skype für 8.5 Milliarden US-Dollar (7.4 Milliarden Schweizer Franken). Skype wurde erst vor 8 Jahren gegründet, hat sich aber schnell zum Platzhirsch bei Internet-Telefonie- und Instant-Messaging-Applikationen gemausert. Acer pins failures in iPad's wake on ex-CEO
Acer shot back at its ex-CEO Gianfranco Lanci's claims that their nationalism held the company back with a statement later on Tuesday. Google to offer $20-a-month 'student package' for a Chrome laptop?
Just as we're wrapping up day one of Google I/O 2011, Forbes received an interesting piece of information regarding Chrome OS. According to an unnamed senior Google executive, tomorrow's keynote will see the launch of a Chrome laptop sold as an attractive $20-per-month "student package." Clippings is a new notepad and note-taking app for the Mac from Lagente Software that focuses on ease of use and elegance rather than an extended set of features. 3D mouses now able to work in any Mac, Windows application
3Dconnexion's line of "3D" mice, previously used mostly by CAD and 3D digital artists along with gamers, can now work with any application for Mac OS X or Windows -- thanks to new 3DxWare 10 drivers for both operating systems, still in beta but recently updated to add functionality. The new drivers extend the usage of the company's 3D mice to everyday applications, from web browsers to office software -- expanding on the "gestures" concept that trackpads have made popular. The Windows driver was updated on Monday, while the Mac driver was last updated April 7th.

Attorney files suit against Apple, app developers
A second lawsuit over the Unique Device Identifier (UDID) number in Apple's iPhone -- and how certain third-party companies are illegally using it to track users' online activities and location -- has been filed in southern New York State, according to AdWeek. Orange County resident Jarret Ammer has filed a class-action, suit naming Apple, Pandora Media and Backflip Studios (best known for the popular game Paper Toss), charging that the latter two companies illegally obtain and use the UDID code to track users and uniquely identify them in order to serve targeted ads

RedMere chip promises direct dock-to-HDMI cable for iPads
RedMere gave a preview on Tuesday of a prototype cable that could greatly simplify HDMI video out without using the official Digital AV Adapter. A new controller chip has led to a straight Dock-Connector-to-HDMI cable that would give the iPad 2, iPhone 4, and current iPod touch true HD video and audio out. Its cable wouldn't provide the power of the Apple cable, but RedMere explained to CNET that the design would be thinner, more flexible, and lighter than typical HDMI wires.

iPad usage survey shows web browsing still primary tablet timesink
Silicon Alley Insider has posted a chart showing the comparative results of reported iPad usage from November 2010 to the current month of May 2011. As you can see from the chart above, an overwhelming amount of people spend a majority of their time on Apple's tablet surfing the web -- most of those people presumably using Safari to do so.

15% of mobile apps launched while offline
Real-time analytics firm Localytics has issued a report that says 15% of all mobile apps are launched while the device they are running on is offline. That's a clear sign that developers would be serving their users better if they built in "offline" modes into more apps, according to Ryan Kim of GigaOm. After all, while wireless networks are expanding all the time in the form of 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi, there are still many places where you can't get connected (like in a subway).

Apple I, bought at Christie's for $200K, restarted in Italy
Macitynet was reporting on Tuesday that a university in Turin, Italy has brought an Apple 1 back to life. The Apple 1 was a limited edition computer, with about 200 made prior to Apple's founding in 1977. After the company was founded, the original Apple 1 computers were accepted as trade-ins for the Apple II, so few survive today. The number 82 model, bought at Christie's auction for over $200,000 by Italian collector Marco Boglione, was the Apple restarted today.

NewerTech debuts battery for original unibody MacBook Pro
Newer Technology has added a 52 watt-hour replacement battery specifically for the Late 2008 and Early 2009 15-inch MacBook Pros (the first of the "unibody" MPB designs, also known as MacBookPro5,1 and MacBookPro5,2). While the new batteries offer only a modest four percent increase in capacity over the Apple original batteries, they sell for 23 percent less money compared to replacement batteries from Apple for those models.

Android@Home takes home automation, AirPlay idea to Android

Rumored 7th generation iPod nano with camera doesn't seem likely
It's always wise to maintain a degree of skepticism with purported photos of next generation Apple products. First of all, they could be fake; and secondly, they could be production samples for form factors which might never see the light of day. We're pretty skeptical about this one.

OCZ has announced two new series of SATA III 2.5-inch solid state drives targeting price and value conscious customers. The Agility 3 comes in three models from 60GB to 240GB.
