Exclusive: TinyChat to enable location-linked video chat on iPhone 4
When it comes to ad-hoc video chatting with friends, strangers or space aliens, the heir apparent to the Chatroulette throne is TinyChat.
This Flash-based video-chatting service, launched in 2009, lets you create chatrooms on the fly. You and several friends can all broadcast, while more attendees/fans/you-name-its can watch and comment.
It's become quite popular with more than 30,000 people joining the site every day and a million active daily users. It's even got the requisite celeb cred with financial backing from Sean 'Puffy' Combs and Charlie Sheen's replacement Ashton Kutcher.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 build seeded to developers
Apple has seeded the first build of Mac OS X 10.6.8 to developers, according to MacRumors. Right now there's no word on any changes included in the 10.6.8 build, but as is standard with later 10.x.x updates, most of the time any changes made are minor maintenance updates.
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is scheduled to be released later this summer, so it is a possibility that Mac OS X 10.6.8 could be the last iteration of Snow Leopard we see. We'll keep you abreast if we get any any word on the release notes for the latest Snow Leopard build and, as always, feel free to mention any changes you notice in 10.6.8 in the comments.

Dell teases lithe new laptop to stimulate our gadget senses (video)
Mmmm, there's nothing like some shots of a slim new PC to get our gadget senses all tingly, and Dell's done just that via a new video. Posted on its Facebook page today, Round Rock's latest laptop -- which likely claims XPS lineage -- is looking lean and clean, with a couple of USB 3.0 ports and lattice-work speaker grilles. Google I/O Galaxy Tab 10.1 won't pair with Macs, some PCs
The 5,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 Limited Edition tablets given out at the Google I/O conference are having issues connecting to and getting files from Macs and some Windows computers. Engadget found this issue when trying to interface the devices with OS X and found issues with Windows 7. A MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6 wouldn't see the tablet even when Android File Transfer was installed.

The iPad 2 is highly unpopular... as a camera
Photo sharing site Flickr tracks and publishes the device origin of all the photos that are posted to its site. With over 4.5 million users uploading photos daily, this data set is enormous.
Stats from a month ago show the iPhone 4 is at the top of the heap of not just smartphones, but of digital cameras as well. Currently, over 4,000 daily users upload photos taken with their iPhone 4. Over 7 million photos have been uploaded since the iPhone 4 launched last June.
Moving to the iPad 2, the stats are pretty abysmal. A month ago, only nine users were uploading iPad 2 photos. Today, that number has climbed to a meager 22. If the camera was a key feature of the tablet

Rumor: 'iPhone 4S' to launch in September with T-Mobile and Sprint as added carriers
Jeffries & Co. analyst Peter Misek issued a research note to clients today in which he claims the next iPhone will be branded the 'iPhone 4S' and will debut in September. The iPhone 4S will reportedly be a minor revamp of the iPhone including "minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support."
The iPhone 4S however, would not feature an LTE 4G chipset. Misek writes that despite Apple's hopes that LTE chipsets would be available in sufficient quantities for the next iPhone, he Qualcomm LTE chipset Apple would have used "is currently not achieving yields sufficient for inclusion in the iPhone 5." Hence, Apple has prepared a version of the iPhone without LTE.

Amazon rumored with 'entire family' of Android tablets
Amazon's tablet plans could include more than one model at the same time. A "trustworthy" source immediately familiar with the project said Friday that an "entire family" of tablets was coming. Android and Me also understood that Pixel Qi's outdoor-friendly 3qi displays were candidates and that the software side had been contracted out to an "embedded systems company" using the most recent version Android by the time the tablets are ready.

Samsung Infuse 4G review
We're just getting into the swing of spring, flowers blooming and skeeters biting, but already it's been a great year for Samsung -- if we ignore the whole lawsuit thing. Apple retail partner Foxlink to double footprint in Asia
Apple's reach in Asia is about to grow bigger, according to a report from DigiTimes published earlier today.
Foxlink, one of Apple's component suppliers and primary retail partners in Asia, revealed plans to expand its chain of Apple specialty shops in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea. The Taiwan-based company aims to double the number of stores it operates in the region from 50 locations to 100 by the end of the year.

Samsung stellt 2560x1600px Display vor - Nächstes iPad mit Retina Display?
Wie zuvor bereits einige Gerüchte andeuteten, könnte die nächste Generation von Apples Tablet mit einem Retina Display kommen, also einem Display, auf dem man bei normalen Betrachtungsverhältnissen keine Pixel erkennen kann. Vermutlich wurde dies bisher zum einen durch Die Display-Größe selbst, als auch durch den Stromverbraucht verhindert. Workaround brings Netflix to more (rooted) Android users
We've already had some success getting Netflix for Android up and running on an officially unsupported phone (a Droid X), but those not able to get it to work simply by transferring and installing the .APK now have another option. As some folks on Reddit have discovered, you can apparently just edit a few system settings to make your phone (or Nook Color, for that matter) think it's actually an HTC G2, which is apparently all it takes to satisfy the Netflix app. It doesn't work with every phone, of course, but quite a few seem to have had success with it. Google News gets GPS-aware news on Android, iPhone
Google wrapped up the week with an update to Google News on mobile devices. A "news near you" addition uses the GPS on a smartphone to automatically tailor the news based on the phone's location. The strategy doesn't just look for the publication but scrapes the article itself to find location keywords nearest the owner.

Analyst claims iPhone 4S due with HSPA+ 3G, Sprint version
Jefferies analyst Peter Misek claimed in a research note Friday that claimed to know details of the next iPhone. Saying that the phone was now called the iPhone 4S, he referred to "industry checks" that supported what had been rumored so far but also mentioned HSPA+ 3G support on GSM networks, implying 21Mbps. He was also told network support would expand to carriers that had been actively seeking it, including Sprint's CDMA network, T-Mobile's uncommon HSPA+ bands, and China Mobile's unique TD-SCDMA.

HDD Fan Control software addresses iMac hard drive replacement issue
Yesterday, Other World Computing wrote a post suggesting you could not install third-party hard drives in the new Sandy Bridge iMacs. According to OWC, any change in the hard drive or hard drive bay would cause the drive fan to spin at maximum speed. Though this problem does exist, it may not be as new or as troublesome as everyone first reported.
According to the developer behind HDD Fan Control, this is a problem that has been present in iMac models since late 2009. Analyst: iPad share looking up in spite of tablet industry
A hardware analyst with Goldman Sachs, Bill Shope, has lowered his overall forecasts for the tablet industry. In 2011 total unit shipments are now expected to reach just 57.7 million, as compared with an earlier prediction of 60.1 million. For 2012 the estimate shift is slightly smaller, down 2 million units to 78 million. The problem lies with Android tablets, which aren't expected to sell as well, according to Shope.

iPad 101: finding the Tab key in Pages
Eager to make my new iPad 2 earn its keep, I've stopped rationalizing the purchase and gotten down to work. The next logical purchase, I figured, is Pages, which I'll use for word processing while on the road. Mobile productivity is what the iPad is all about, isn't it?
I read the "getting started" tutorial and then waited for a project to present itself while I was away from my Mac. An opportunity soon presented itself during a boring train ride.

Apple applies for patent on text/speech conversion on phones
Apple has filed for a patent on a text-to-speech and speech-to-text conversion system, designed to work within noisy surroundings, documents show. Handling the conversion would be an iPhone's logic board; the technique stands in contrast to a common one, used by companies like Nuance, in which conversion is processed through a remote service. The Apple system would be able to detect ambient noise using a microphone, and prompt a person answering a call to use text-to-speech instead of their own voice.

Man uses Prey to track stolen MacBook Pro hundreds of miles, calls thief
Here's an incredible story of how author Sean Power retrieved his stolen 17" MacBook Pro from 800km away, using Prey and Twitter.
Sean's bag containing his laptop, some money and other important items was stolen. Three days later, he received a report from Prey noting the computer's location and a picture of the alleged thief, which was taken by the MBP's camera. Soon the man in custody of the laptop launched Skype from a bar, and Sean was able to learn his name.
Sean then took to Twitter, explaining the situation to his followers

Kundenzuwachs beschert O2 Umsatz- und Ergebnisplus

Apple retail partner plans to double Asian retail footprint
One of Apple's key Asian retail partners, Foxlink, is planning to double the number of Apple-exclusive stores it operates in the region. Apple recently filed a patent application for a text-to-speech and a speech-to-text converter designed to work in noisy environments. The patent describes a system that uses a converter included on the logic board of the phone. Nvidia übertrifft Erwartungen trotz Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang

Judge rules for Kodak in Apple lawsuit
An ITC judge has ruled that Apple's allegations of patent infringement against Kodak are unfounded. iPhone and iPad app developers faced an alarming trend Friday as at least two were sued by an unnamed patent firm. The company claims that PCalc Lite developer James Thomson and Shanghai Mahjong creator Patrick McCarron were allegedly violating patents simply by using in-app purchases. Nuu ships MiniKey for iPhone 4
Chinese accessory maker Nuu has released the MiniKey, a stylish case and bluetooth keyboard combo for the iPhone 4. The case includes a landscape keyboard that makes the iPhone look, well, just like an HTC phone.
The keyboard slides out from the back side of the case and works with email, messaging and other text-based applications. Because the virtual keyboard does not launch, the MiniKey lets you write a novella using the entire screen of the iPhone 4. It also includes a few extra features like a backlit keys, a command key that can be used for shortcuts and a toggle key that lets you switch between the MiniKey keyboard and the on-screen keyboard.

Biodiesel can be harvested from leftover food, kids no longer have to clear their plates
The best dishes always contain 30 per cent fat minimum. This doesn't merely ensure a level of hearty satisfaction (Windows 7 Whopper anybody?), it also means the leftovers contain plenty of the greasy good stuff, which can be cleverly harvested and metamorphosed into biodiesel. iPhone, iPad still lording over Android in big business
Apple is still far ahead in corporate adoption compared to Google, Intermedia found in a study late Thursday. Despite Android's inroads at home, iPhones made up 61 percent of those using Exchange on Intermedia's global hosting service. Samurai Girl is a 2D Korean RPG on iOS that's surprisingly deep. The combat is pretty traditional 2D stuff, but this game has all of the features that you'd expect in a full RPG, including over 50 quests and various skills to earn, a full collectibles and crafting system and even a pet system, which the game claims is the first ever seen in an action RPG (I'll argue that Torchlight has pets, but whatever).
Unfortunately, the game suffers from a pretty cluttered UI, so while the controls are responsive, it might take a little getting used to all of the buttons and seeing around them. Samsung zeigt 10-Zoll Display mit Retina Display Auflösung

Was viele erwartet hatten bei der letzten Vorstellung des iPad könnte jetzt endlich kommen. Samsung und LG versprechen für die SID 2011 größere Displays mit Auflösungen jenseits der Pixelsichtbarkeit. Samsungs 10,1 Zoll LCD Display mit 300ppi z.B. das eine Auflösung von 2560x1600 bringen soll auf Basis von PenTile. Oder LGs AH-IPS Displays mit Größen bis zu 84-Zoll. Wir sind uns nicht ganz sicher was LG nun wirklich zeigen wird, aber nächste Woche ist es soweit.

Solar Impulse's first international flight is underway (live)
We've been following Captain Piccard's Solar Impulse solar-powered airplane for a few years now. Today, right now as a matter of fact, the pioneering Swiss HB-SIA aircraft with 200-foot wingspan is attempting its first international flight. The flight to Brussels began at 8:40am (0640GMT) and should conclude about 12 to 13 hours later when Andre Borshberg brings all 12,000 photovoltaic cells to the ground in a controlled (we hope) landing. If successful then we can expect the craft to take on the Atlantic, Lindbergh style, in 2012 or 2013. VIA hat sein Prozessor-Portfolio um ein Quad-Core-Modell erweitert, das besonders energieeffizient sein soll. Die erste Vierkern-CPU des Herstellers läuft mit 1,2 GHz und hat eine Leistungsaufnahme von 27,5 Watt TDP. Und wieder ein Mal hat die Entwicklungsabteilung von Fujitsu seine Origami-Träume verwirklicht. Das Konzept für ein faltbares Flexbook bringt aufgeklappt einen 21:9 Touchscreen, lässt sich aber sowohl als Tablet, als Laptop als auch als größenreduzierter E-Reader nutzen. Damit wären die Entscheidungsprobleme schon mal gelöst. Bunt ist es obendrein. Die Frage ist nur wann aus dem Konzept endlich Wirklichkeit wird und wir uns zwei Geräte sparen können.

Oliver wird weniger und Fatwatch hilft
Mai 2011: Ich bin 34 und wiege 121 Kilo. Das sah mal anders aus: 2000 waren es 117 Kilo, 2004 92 und 2006, als ich mit Fitnesstudios anfing, bereits wieder 108. Natürlich weiß ich, was ich essen sollte. Aber auch von natürlichen und gesunden Dingen kann man zuviel essen. Stetig nimmt man dann zu. Abnehmen ist deshalb eigentlich simpel: Weniger aufnehmen, mehr verbrauchen oder beides. Ich bevorzuge die Erhöhung des Verbrauchs. Rad fahren, Schwimmen und Training im Fitnessstudio haben stets schnell Erfolge gezeigt. Im Abnehmzeitraum bis 2004 funktionierten deshalb ein selbst durchgeführter Weight Watchers-Plan und viel Rad fahren sehr gut. Was fehlte ist die Disziplin: Eintöniges Training, Routine, Faulheit und die eine oder andere Krankheit bringen mich raus und der äußere Druck für einen Neustart fehlte. Deshalb startet jetzt quasi der letzte Versuch: 30km Fahrrad bringt pro Tag der Weg zur Arbeit, plus Schwimmen, plus Training im Studio um die Ecke, wo 2x die Woche auch ein Fahrradkurs stattfindet.

Japan dreht auf: Kitzeln mit dem iPhone

Erst hatten wir ein Kuss-Interface aus Japan, jetzt gibt es einen Versuch das iPhone zur Kitzel-Zentrale zu machen. An der Tokyoter Universität für Electro-Communication haben sie jetzt dieses Interface, das Bilder des zu kitzelnden Körperteils rüberbeamt, und das kitzeln über ein taktiles Interface auf der Rückseite erledigt, vorgestellt. Buchsuche: Französische Verleger verklagen Google
Wie erst jetzt bekannt wurde, haben die drei französischen Verlage Gallimard, Flammarion und Albin Michel am 6. Mai bei einem Gericht in Paris Klage gegen Google eingereicht. Facebook steckt hinter Schmierenkampagne gegen Google
Wie The Daily Beast meldet, ist Facebook für eine Schmierenkampagne gegen Google verantwortlich. Demnach heuerte das Social Network die PR-Agentur Burson-Marsteller an, um kritische Berichte über Google zu verbreiten und Zeitungen dazu zu bringen, Vorwürfe zu untersuchen, wonach Google die Privatsphäre von Nutzern verletzt. Zudem soll die Agentur einem "einflussreichen Blogger" geholfen haben, einen negativen Artikel über Google zu verfassen. Man kann nicht behaupten, dass Jeff Bezos wirklich ein Amazon Kindle Tablet von Samsung bestätigt hat, das Peter Rojas vor ein paar Wochen als 99% wahrscheinlich angedeutet hat, aber in einem Interview mit Consumer Reports war sein Antwort: "stay tuned". Eigentlich sollte das heissen, folgt in Kürze. Im Konjunktiv ging es dann weiter. Es wird ein zusätzliches Gerät zu dem existierenden Kindle werden, das den Markt nicht verwirrt. Eine Farbversion des Kindle ist erst mal nicht geplant, da die Technik noch nicht weit genug ist.

Nintendo 3DS struggles vs. iPod in April as Xbox 360 leads
Nintendo faced a hurdle in its hopes to retake some of its share in mobile gaming from Apple on Thursday after NPD results showed that the 3DS wasn't outselling its predecessor. The company shipped 194,000 3DS systems in April but moved 257,000 of the DSi the same month. Microsoft has filed a formal application for declaration of invalidity with the European Union's Community Trade Mark office over Apple's "App Store" trademark. The European declaration is a continuance of the Redmond company's campaign begun in the US in January. "App Store" is perhaps one of the hottest trademarks in the world today, as the future of much consumer technology seems to revolve around devices that get much of their added value from stores which give away or sell third-party apps.

Reuters: a failed takeover of T-Mobile would cost AT&T as much as $6 billion
AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile was a big deal as soon as it was announced, but now Reuters has unearthed some more context to lend it even more cruciality. We already knew that in the event of AT&T&T-Mobile failing to garner regulatory approval, AT&T would owe Deutsche Telekom, the current owner of T-Mo USA, $3 billion in cash, some spare AWS spectrum, and a roaming agreement "on terms favorable to both parties." Are the Beatles responsible for music's digital growth in 2011?
Nielsen announced yesterday that music sales in the US are up 1.6% in 2011. 1.6% might not seem like a whole lot, but for the embattled music industry, any growth is good news. Interestingly, Nielsen seems to ascribe the growth of music sales to The Beatles' deal with Apple. As Nielsen says in its report, "Catalog album sales are up 5.4 percent in 2011, thanks in part to a long-awaited 2010 deal allowing digital distribution of The Beatles' albums for the first time." The Fab Four's music exclusively went on sale on iTunes in November to much fanfair.

Chromebooks get 3G connectivity via Three UK
Long before Google outed Samsung's Series 5 and Acer's Chromebook, we'd already heard that Verizon would provide unlimited 3G coverage to the Internet giant's netbooks, but our friends across the Atlantic still didn't have a data carrier until yesterday. We don't have a lot in the way of details for now, but Three UK has stepped forward as the Chromebooks' carrier of choice for 3G

Square poaches UI engineer Mike Thole from Apple
A tweet from Second Gear software designer Justin Williams has revealed that Safari engineer Mike Thole has left Apple to join Square, the mobile-payment company who recently brought their innovative credit-card reader to Apple retail stores and other outlets as an alternative to traditional card readers, BusinessInsider reports. Thole, who has not yet updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect the change, listed his duties as working primarily on the user interface of Safari for the Mac as well as the iOS version.

Microsoft fights Apple's App Store trademark in Europe
Microsoft chose Thursday to extend its challenge to Apple's App Store trademark to Europe by disputing the trademark with the EU Community Trade Mark bureau. The company wanted both "App Store" and "Appstore" ruled invalid as the two "both lack distinctiveness." Its argument was identical to that in the US and contended that both were too generic to be sustainable as trademarks.

Flexbook concept serves up candy-coated convertible
It seems Fujitsu's got a thing for morphing PCs. Way back in 2006, we saw this mysterious tri-fold concept, which was rumored to be making the rounds inside Fujitsu R&D, and now the outfit's short-listed this déjà-vu-inducing transformer for its 2011 "Life with Future Computing Award." Intuit extends online payroll to iOS with mobile app
Intuit today released an iOS app companion to their Online Payroll service that allows employers or accounting professionals to handle computing hours and paying employees both hourly and salaried, from anywhere with an internet connection. Accountants can choose which clients they will run payroll for, and employers can enter hours, preview paychecks, look up employee info and pay employees through manual check printing or direct deposit, with e-mail notifications, electronic "pay stubs" and other record-keeping tasks automatically handled.

University of Delaware campus will host an Apple Store of some kind
The University of Delaware has announced that it will allow the opening of an Apple Store on campus this fall. It's unknown yet what kind of store this will be -- whether it will be a full Apple Store, a mini-store, or some kind of university-branded reseller, but whatever the site, the location is expected to open sometime later on this year. The University is just about to finish renovating a new building which will supposedly hold a Barnes and Noble, a Starbucks, and a few other places, so this might be in there or just as a section in the main university bookstore.

Samsung shows Retina-like 2560x1600, 10-inch LCD for tablets
Samsung and its frequent partner Nouvoyance said on Thursday they would show an ultra-sharp LCD optimized for tablets. The 10.1-inch, PenTile RGBW-based (red, green, blue, white) screen reaches an unprecedented resolution of 2560x1600. At 300 pixels per inch, the panel's sharpness is double the 1280x800 on most early Android 3 tablets and 2.25 times sharper than the 132PPI of an iPad 2 screen.
