What does the Skype sale mean for Apple customers?
By now everyone knows that Skype has been sold to Microsoft for a whoppingly big 8.5 billion dollars. The question on all our minds is what will the sale mean to Mac and iOS users?
There aren't any ready answers. Microsoft often treats the Mac as a least-favored nation. Most versions of Office have lagged behind the Windows counterparts, including some dramatic functional lapses like when Microsoft killed the ability to use Visual Basic macros in Office 2008, and then later restored that functionality in Office 2011.

Apple wins patent on iPad with second USB port
Among a host of Apple patent wins today is an unusual design concept for the iPad, notes Patently Apple. Diagrams depict what is essentially a 3G iPad 1, but with the key difference of a second USB port along one edge, situated near the SIM slot. Why Apple would abandon the concept is unknown, as it would have allowed for landscape docking or connecting multiple peripherals. The patent was originally submitted in Q1 2010 -- around the time of the tablet's announcement -- and credits Apple CEO Steve Jobs and lead designer Jonathan Ive among many others.

Google teases Android Ice Cream Sandwich, vows source code
Google in the many announcements it gave at its first Google I/O keynote gave its very first look at the next version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. The OS is designed primarily to bring Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) features to phones, smaller tablets, and other devices. For most, that will bring the more visual multitasking, the "holographic" interface and new launcher, and the dynamic menu bar.

Another smash and grab at the Crocker Park Apple Store in Westlake, OH
On Friday morning, a smash-and-grab robbery of yet another Apple Store took place at the Crocker Park Apple Store in Westlake, Ohio, an upscale suburb of Cleveland. Around 4:30 AM, three burglars smashed in the front window activating the burglar alarm as well as the store's security cameras, which caught it all on tape. The well-organized thieves were in and out in thirty seconds after stealing twenty-four notebooks and one iPod touch. The culprits, wearing all black, left no apparent trail and so far the Westlake police have no disclosed leads.

Nächster iPod nano mit 1,3 MP-Kamera, ohne Clip?
Bereits vor einigen Wochen tauchten auf Apple.pro Bilder eines angeblichen iPod nano mit einem Platz für eine mögliche Kamera auf. Nun hat heute die Seite wieder ein Bild veröffentlicht, auf dem man einen weiteren Prototypen des selben Modells von der Rückseite sieht, dieses Mal mit einer Kamera. Die Linse ist aus irgendeinem Grund sechseckig, was sich vermutlich bis zum September noch ändern wird. WebGL standard riddled with security vulnerabilities?
Security research firm Context has issued a report criticizing WebGL, the 3D graphics standard used in popular browsers such as Firefox, Chrome and Safari. The report points to several serious vulnerabilities that are said to leave systems open to attacks. Experimental exploits reportedly used malicious code to gain access to a computer's core operating system.

Google kicks off Music Beta and Movies, scraps music store
As part of the many launches at Google I/O day one, Google formally launched its first real steps into cloud media delivery. Music Beta lets users upload as many as 20,000 songs in their personal music collections that they can then stream from either a modern web browser or an Android phone or tablet. Offline music still plays a role despite rumors: recent tracks are automatically cached for later, and listeners can "pin" music to a mobile device to have a permanent copy for when an Internet connection isn't available.

Analyst: iPhone 4 topped sales at AT&T, Verizon in April
The iPhone 4 appears to have been the bestseller at both AT&T and Verizon during April, says Canaccord Genuity analyst Mike Walkley. The claim is based on unspecified "checks" of Apple business. He also observes iPad 2 sales appear to have been "very strong," although in both cases no precise estimates are provided. Apple, AT&T and Verizon all keep quiet about monthly iPhone and iPad sales as a rule.

Nein, es gibt nicht nur jede Menge Softwarenews zur Google I/O, sondern für die Anwesenden Entwickler auch 5000 Galaxy Tab 10.1, denn Google hat anscheinend die ganz weiten Spendierhosen an. Die Special Edition Tablets mit weissem Rücken sind die neue, dünnere Version die der Rest der Welt erst nächsten Monat bekommt und laufen mit Honeycomb 3.0 und anscheinend ohne TouchWiz UI. Das Update auf 3.1 soll in den nächsten Wochen folgen.

Rdio posts Mobile Playback API for iOS, Android
Music streaming service Rdio has released a new aid for developers, the Mobile Playback API for iOS and Android. The code should allow the creation of third-party apps which can play Rdio content, including access to playlists and charts. Its functionality is similar to that of the Rdio Web Playback API, which was announced in March during South by Southwest in Austin.

Analyst: iPhone sales strong, Atrix 4G and BlackBerry weak
An investment note from Canaccord Genuity lead analyst T. Michael Walkley on Monday suggested that some of the halo devices for Android and BlackBerry were struggling to get sales even as Apple was succeeding. The iPhone and iPad were still selling very well at AT&T and Verizon in April and, in many cases, were outselling flagship Android devices. The iPhone 4 was the best-selling smartphone at both carriers, and the $49 iPhone 3GS was outselling both the HTC Inspire 4G and Motorola Atrix, according to checks at several stores.

KT's sleeve for iPhone 4 gives WiMAX, extends battery life
Korean Telecom introduced a new sled case for the iPhone 4, the KWF-B2500 from its Portable Mobile WiMax Egg series. It provides WiMAX-based 4G access and has a 1,500mAh battery to extend battery life by about four hours. It adds 0.31in to the thickness of the iPhone 4 and weighs 2.4 ounces.

doubleTwist enables AirPlay support for Android devices
Developer doubleTwist has joined companies providing AirPlay support for Android devices. The outfit's Android app has been updated to v1.4.1, and can now use AirPlay to stream music, photos and video to an Apple TV. Music and video can be funneled to DLNA-ready hardware, and music alone can be pushed to Sonos speakers via early beta support.

SoftBank surges in early 2011 based on iPhone sales
SoftBank on Monday posted banner results that it directly credited to the iPhone and iPad. A rise in smartphones, led mostly by Apple on the Japanese carrier, was a "huge factor" in pumping profit for the early winter to $588.4 million. The figure was over 25 times larger than a year ago, although SoftBank was quick to note that dropping its 2G network cut into its profits a year ago.

Smash-and-grab hits Ohio Apple Store; new Detroit site soon?
Apple's Crocker Park retail store in Westlake, Ohio was hit by a smash-and-grab robbery on Friday morning, reports say. Surveillance video obtained by police shows three people smashing the front doors at about 4:30AM, which set off an alarm. The suspects were already gone in a minute however, having managed to take 24 notebooks and a lone iPod.

HTC Puccini 4G tablet to take on iPad at AT&T
AT&T is lining up a pair of HTC devices for the near future that could see the carrier get its first major 10-inch tablet alternative to the iPad, a pair of leaks showed. Nicknamed the Puccini, it would be one of the first truly 4G devices on the network and use LTE. It's presumed by PocketNow that the device would use Android 3.0 and support the Scribe pen support from HTC's smaller Flyer.

BenQ unveils 14-megapixel camera with Lomo art filter
Taiwanese electronics maker BenQ has introduced the E1465 camera on Monday. The device sports a 14-megapixel sensor and a number of creative effects options that include Lomo, Fish Eye and Color Accent. Jobs takes third place in UK 'Engineering Heroes' list
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has taken third place in a list of "Engineering Heroes" picked by UK engineering undergraduates. About 900 people in all were surveyed by General Electric. Jobs' selection is somewhat unusual in that the executive is not famous for his engineering skills; he is, however, known to be deeply involved in setting the design principles of Apple products, to the extent of controlling small details. Apple trumps HTC, others for first-quarter smartphone growth
Apple showed the best performance of any smartphone manufacturer during the first quarter of 2011, says research firm IHS iSuppli. The company's 18.6 million iPhones represented a 14.9 percent growth over the 16.2 million it sold in Q4 2010. The second-best growth by contrast was displayed by HTC with a distant 6.2 percent, leaving it at fifth place in terms of marketshare versus Apple's second.

Google used Android compatibility as 'club' against Skyhook
A set of newly unsealed messages from the ongoing Skyhook lawsuit against Google may have supported Skyhook's claims that Google was abusing its control over Android to shut out competing services. Eton intros extra-large solar powered iPhone speaker dock
Eton has unveiled its latest iPhone speaker dock, the Soulra XL. Google Chrome 12 beta packs download screening, pulls Gears
Google in the run-up to its I/O conference on Tuesday has posted its first public beta of Chrome 12. The new version now automatically checks download types and issues a warning if it suspects the file is a trojan or other malware. Its investigation goes beyond basic filters like file types and uses the same mechanism Google does to screen websites on its search page.

Microsoft starts TV ads to spur reluctant PC upgraders
Microsoft is due to start a new TV ad campaign Monday night in a bid to counter declining Windows PC sales. Rather than target Apple, the first new ad (below) and subsequent spots will tackle real couples holding on to existing PCs because they were "good enough." The ads hope to convince both the couples and viewers that they've been missing out on new hardware and software that would come with a new PC.

Apple delays publishing of LGPL WebKit code
Apple has been negligent in releasing some of the source code from the BSD and LGPL (Lesser General Public License) components of WebKit, reports say. What would become WebKit is based partly on the KHTML and KJS in KDE Project's Konqueror browser, and Apple has promised to publish all modifications of related open-source material. The problem is that no source code has been published in connection with iOS 4.3, 4.3.1, 4.3.2 or 4.3.3, even though iOS' Safari web browser is based on WebKit.

YouTube confirms major movie rentals in iTunes challenge
YouTube followed up its teaser with confirmation that it was bringing major movies to its rental service. Many of the 3,000-plus movie titles being added Monday are from three of the four major movie studios, including NBC-Universal, Sony, and Warner. The mix includes both classics like Reservoir Dogs as well as newer titles such as Inception.

Sanlitun Beijing Apple Store re-opens, settlement reached
In the aftermath of a brawl that broke out at the Sanlitun Apple Store in Beijing, China yesterday, Apple has been left with a bill of over $4,600 to replace a broken glass door, and local police report that the parties involved in the fight -- which may or may not have included some Apple Store staff -- have agreed to pay the equivalent of $3,077 to settle claims due to injuries caused to others in the store at the time.

Missing Sync for Android 1.6 adds bookmark, task syncing
Mark/Space has updated The Missing Sync for Android to v1.6. The upgrade adds support for syncing bookmarks and tasks, as well as compatibility with Android tablets from Motorola, Samsung and Barnes and Noble, including the Xoom and the Nook Color. The new services require users to download two free apps, Fliq Tasks and Fliq Bookmarks, which are newly available alongside the existing Fliq Notes and Fliq Calendar. The Fliq series allows sync with both Macs and Windows PCs.

Apple, Nuance deal due at WWDC, said using Apple datacenter
The rumored Apple deal with Nuance has reportedly not only been sealed but will have a unique tie-in with Apple's upcoming North Carolina datacenter. A rumor Monday claimed that Nuance's voice-to-text features are already running in the facility and would remotely process voice commands on its servers. Skype updates v5 for Mac, fixes security hole
VOIP telephony company Skype has released an official update correcting a serious security issue in their most current version of Skype for Mac, a problem that could have been exploited by an attacker to remotely take control of the computer. New version 5.1.59.947, available directly from the company or through the program's own update mechanism, closed the security hole and also resolves other minor bugs, including an issue of video "freezing" in high packet-loss situations.

Zynga has reportedly acquired yet another company, Sapus Media, to enlist several developers who are credited with creating the popular iOS game engine cocos2d. Queen Elizabeth allegedly orders an iPad for her own use
Yet another world leader has opted to become an iPad 2 user. Following President Obama's lead, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth has acquired an iPad for her personal use, according to a report in the British tabloid newspaper The Sun. Google Music Beta due soon, won't go for label approval [U]
(Update: technical details) Google Music will finally get its official showing at Google I/O and should take a cue from Amazon in challenging music labels. Foxconn denies making workers sign anti-suicide pacts
Foxconn, which received a barrage of bad publicity and pressure both from outside groups and major clients such as Apple, HP, Dell and Nokia following a series of 17 suicides in 2010, has denied charges that it forces workers to sign a contract promising not to commit suicide and to "treasure their lives." Microsoft rumored near paying $8 billion to buy Skype [U]
(Update: more sources and details) A rumored collaboration between Microsoft and Skype might be nothing less than a full takeover. Insiders said Monday night that the company was near a deal worth $7 billion to $8 billion. Starting last Saturday, all 216 Guitar Center stores in the U.S. have begun offering a four-week, rotating series of free seminars showing customers how to use Garageband and a Mac to record their own music, called "Recording Made Easy." The classes take place on Saturdays from 10 a.m., with this week's focus being on virtual instruments and loops. Future sessions will include topics such as effects, mixing and publishing, and then the series will start again with a discussion of signal flow and microphone techniques, AppleInsider reports.

ASUS makes just 350K Eee PCs due to iPad, 'killer' model due
ASUS has had to whittle back its Eee PC shipments after sustained impact from tablets like the iPad, tipsters said Monday evening. It moved just 350,000 netbooks in April after tablets still "significantly impacted the demand," Digitimes claimed. In response, it would shoot back with a "killer" new Eee PC in June and an ultra-budget model at below $199 to widen the price gap with Apple and others.

Mobile Spy v5 enables parents, employers smartphone access
Retina-X Studios has updated their Mobile Spy 5.0 smartphone monitoring software to include the Mobile Spy Live Control Panel, which can grab screenshots from the user's smartphone (iOS, Android or Blackberry) as well as a map of its current location, updated every 90 seconds. Adobe ships three new Photoshop apps for iPad
After having first shown hints of them at Photoshop World in March, Adobe today unveiled three new "Photoshop Touch" apps for the iPad using the Photoshop Touch SDK, all now available in the App Store. Android past iPhone in Japan share, Apple the top maker
Android successfully pushed past the iPhone for the top smartphone platform in Japan last fiscal year, according to MM Research Institute. Google shot up from just 250,000 phones and 11 percent of the market at the end of March 2010 to 4.91 million phones at the end of March this year, or 57.4 percent. Apple moved 3.23 million iPhones over the same period and was 37.8 percent; BlackBerry and Windows Mobile were virtually non-existent.

iPad 2 as fast as Cray 2 supercomputer, fraction of the size
Apple's iPad 2 is as fast as a Cray 2 supercomputer from a quarter-century ago, Top 500 and Linpack co-manager Dr. Jack Dongarra said late Monday. At 1.5 to 1.65 gigaflops of computing power, Apple's tablet would compete with the eight-processor, 1985-era system despite being just a sliver of the size. Where the Cray 2 was the size of a washing machine, the NYT said, the iPad 2 can manage the same performance in the space of a large notepad.

Microsoft buys Skype for $8.5b for Xbox, Windows Phone
Microsoft on Tuesday confirmed rumors and said it would buy Skype for $8.5 billion. The mutually approved deal will see Skype's voice and video chat help out platforms like the Xbox 360 and its Kinect camera as well as Windows Phone. Outlook and Microsoft's corporate communication system Lync would also get help, Microsoft said.

Apple posts iOS 4.3.3 WebKit source code
Fulfilling earlier obligations, Apple has finally released source code for iOS 4.3.3. The firmware contains several open-source components, notably ones related to the WebKit rendering engine used in Safari and third-party browsers such as Chrome. Figures show NASDAQ rebalancing spiked Apple share trades
The rebalancing of Apple's weight in the NASDAQ-100 resulted in Apple's third-busiest trading day of the year, says Fortune. Microsoft said tricked into overbidding for Skype by $4.5b
Microsoft's $8.5 billion purchase of Skype may have been the result of it being fooled into paying more. Multiple tips claimed Tuesday that Google was bidding but had stopped at $4 billion, less than half what Microsoft paid. TechCrunch was told that Facebook had never been in competition and, while not intentional, ended up convincing Microsoft it had to bid more to stay in the running.

New York City kicks off GPS-based mobile emergency system
New York City had the distinction on Tuesday of being the first to carry FEMA's new mobile emergency system and explained how it worked. PLAN (Personal Localized Alerting Network) will reach the city half a year before everywhere else and will give those with cellphones and other mobile devices a location-based warning of imminent threats. The system would help give the city a way of warning residents of a terrorist attack or a disaster by notifying just those most likely to be affected in a given area.

As planned, executives from Apple and Google appeared in front of a US Senate judiciary subcommittee on mobile privacy on Tuesday. Speaking on behalf of Apple was the company's VP of software technology, Guy L. "Bud" Tribble, who repeated some of the company's previous positions on mobile privacy. New Android guidelines admit, promise to cure fragmentation
Google used its Google I/O day one keynote for a rare admission that Android was fragmented as well as a plan to solve it. The company is starting up a formal group to establish guidelines for both how quickly Android devices would get updated after new releases as well as a guaranteed timeframe during which they would get updates. Members of the program are initially promising to keep upgrading devices for at least 18 months after they're released "if the hardware allows."

More shots show 7th-gen iPod nano with camera slot
Rumors of an iPod nano 7 with a camera gained more credibility Tuesday with another leaked production sample. The new version is still in forest green but this time showed the back, where a hole has been cut in the back and no clip was visible. Apple.pro's source, "Ray" from California, also said the camera had been upgraded from the one-megapixel camera in the iPod touch and iPad 2 to 1.3 megapixels.

Windows Phone 7, Symbian ads get more hits than iOS
The latest quarterly ad metrics report published by mobile ad network Smaato reveal Windows Phone 7 owners are clicking on more ads than those with iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Symbian devices. This is a large change from last year's numbers, which had Symbian handsets at the top of the ad click-through rates. Smaato's CMO, Harald Heidhardt, helped put the results in perspective.

YouTube and Google Movies rentals can be consumed on either platform
Remember those 3,000 movies from Universal, Sony and Warner Bros. that were added to YouTube yesterday? Turns out, that same library is also being pushed to Google's newly announced Movies service. We learned as much during the outfit's executive Q&A session following the keynote this morning, and furthermore anything purchased / rented via Google Movies will be available to consume via YouTube, and vice-versa. Apple patent reveals unused iPad design with two USB slots
In his last appearance during an earnings conference call last year, Steve Jobs hinted that Apple tested several designs for the iPad during its development stage. One of these possible designs may have reared its ugly head in a patent application recently approved by the USPTO.
This patent details a Wi-Fi+3G iPad with an extra USB slot for landscape connectivity. Android bekommt Open Accessory Standard und Entwicker-Kit auf Arduino-Basis

Auch an die Entwickler hat Google gedacht und hat im Rahmen der Keynote einen neuen Android Open Accessory Standard präsentiert. Damit bekommt Android eine eigene Plattform à la "Made for iPod". Jedes Zubehörteil, das auf dieser API entwickelt wurde (ab 2.3.4 oder 3.1) soll demnach auf jedem Android-Device, ob Tablet oder Smartphone laufen. Die Keynote der Google I/O wurde so eben beendet. Derweil wollen wir euch die bisherigen Highlights mit den dazugehörigen Bildern kurz zusammenfassen. Dass Googles Cloud-basierter Musikservice Music Beta kommen wird, war den meisten schon vor dem Event klar. Bislang läuft der Service noch auf Invite-Basis und nur in den USA, was sich aber in Kürze ändern soll. Bis zu 20.000 Songs soll man ablegen können. Google announces Android Open Accessory standard, Arduino-based ADK
Google's really not leaving any stone unturned at IO today -- it's now also announced a brand new Android Open Accessory standard, which promises to effectively be its own version of "Made for iPod." That means that any accessory designed using the API (which could even be something like an exercise bike) will be compatible with any Android phone or tablet -- running at least Android 2.3.4 or 3.1, that is. What's more, Google is also making a reference hardware design dubbed an "ADK" available to developers and, get this, it's based on Arduino. Right now, it only includes USB, but Bluetooth support is planned for the future.

Google just announced movie rentals in the Android Market at its I/O conference. Chris from the Android services team just hit the stage at Moscone and demonstrated renting movies on the Android Market from your phone, tablet or PC with a single click. "Pinning" mirrors the experience with apps and books, you can select it on your PC and download to the device in the background. iSuppli: Apple bucks decline in smartphone market, edges closer to Nokia
Apple is edging closer to Nokia and poised to assume the leadership position in the smartphone market, according to IHS iSuppli. In the first three months of 2011, Apple shipped 18.6 million iPhones globally, a 14.9% jump from the previous quarter. While Apple showed impressive gains, Nokia posted a significant decline. Q1 2011 shipments from the Finnish handset maker declined 14.5% from the 28.3 million handsets shipped in Q4 2010 to 24.2 million in Q1 of this year.

PLAN emergency alert system going mobile in NYC and DC this year, nationwide in 2012
If you live in the U.S., you've probably seen those anger-inducing emergency alert system test messages that interrupt your favorite programming on a weekly basis. Most of us have never seen the system used in an actual emergency, but come later this year, cell phone users in New York and Washington will have similar alerts pushed to their mobile devices -- presumably without the annoying weekly tests. Toshiba nach drei Jahren zurück in den schwarzen Zahlen
Toshiba hat seine Zahlen für das Geschäftsjahr 2010 (PDF) vorgelegt, das am 31. März endete. Toshiba schrieb erstmals seit drei Jahren wieder einen Gewinn: 137,8 Milliarden Yen (1,19 Milliarden Euro). Das entspricht 32,55 Yen (28 Euro-Cent) je Aktie. Vergangenes Jahr hatte insgesamt noch ein Verlust von 17,7 Milliarden Yen (152,8 Millionen Euro) zu Buche gestanden.

Apple compensates customer injured at Beijing store
Apple reportedly compensated a customer injured in a melee outside the Sanlitun Apple Store in Beijing, China. The customer, identified as Ding Wencheng by the Global Times, was reportedly paid a 20,000-yuan ($3,000) settlement by the Apple store for injuries he received in the altercation. According to state reports, a scuffle erupted when a foreign Apple employee allegedly started to beat suspected line jumpers. Security firm claims to have hacked Chrome's sandbox
It didn't manage to do it during the most recent Pwn2Own challenge, but VUPEN Security is now claiming that it has finally managed to hack Google's Chrome browser and crack its so-called "sandbox." Bee venom used to create ultra-sensitive explosives sensor
We knew that well-trained bees were capable of sniffing out dynamite and other explosives, but researchers at MIT have now come up with a slightly less militant way to use our winged friends as bomb detectors. Using an iPhone app to test for landmines
One of the big problems with using metal detectors to find unexploded landmines is that they detect all pieces of metal in the ground, often forcing operators to inspect every suspect item they find. This can be very dangerous, so researchers at Harvard have figured out how to use smartphones to find landmines.
Trained and experienced operators can tell by the beeps coming from their detectors the size and shape of objects found. Harvard researchers take these beeps and map them onto a smartphone screen, such as an iPhone, to better visualise what's been found. HP hat einen LED-backlit-Monitor mit 22 Zoll vorgestellt, der unseren Designvorstellungen fürs untere Preissegment schon recht nahe kommt: kein Schnick, kein Schnack und vor allem keine unnötigen Föhnwellen auf der Rückseite. Diese ist beim Elite L2201x nämlich angenehm grade, genau wie das Profil des 1 Zentimeter dicken Displays, das ansonsten mit 1920 mal 1080 Pixeln und einem 1:5000 Kontrastverhältnis aufwartet. Microsoft verucht seit geraumer Zeit in Sachen Webservices ein Fass aufzumachen und zuletzt sah es mit Bling-Fortschritten, Xbox-360-Vernetzung und Windows-Phone-Hoffnungen gar nicht mal so schlecht aus für den Konzern. Aber ein Coup geht anders. Zum Beispiel so: laut Wall Street Journal will Microsoft Skype schnupfen und für den IP-Telefonisten 7 bis 8 Milliarden Dollar berappen, inklusive der Skype-Schulden würde der Deal dann bis zu 8,5 Milliarden schwer sein. Stick with us on this one: An industrious Touch Arcade forumgoer did a little poking around the Steam page for the upcoming Duke Nukem Forever release (the long, long, loooong-awaited title is finally, supposedly, coming out in June of this year). On that page is a link to the game's manual for the digital release, and in that manual, there's some legal boilerplate lifted straight from Apple's "App Store Additional License Terms."
So there's a few potential things happening there. First up, this could simply mean there's a Mac version of the game on the way to the Mac App Store, though if that was the case, odds are that the game would be released on Steam for Mac as well, and it's not currently listed as a Steam Play title.

Google's cloud music service to launch without iOS support
According to CNET, Google will unveil its cloud music service, Music Beta, at the I/O Developer Conference. The free service will be invitation-only (and US-only) at launch, and it will allow users to upload up to 20,000 songs onto Google's servers and stream that music to many web-connected devices.

NPD: Mobile accounts for half of digital game downloads
NPD has released a report that cites mobile games as a big driver for digital downloads overall. Digital game consumption has been growing in leaps and bounds lately, and according to the latest report, nearly half of all of those digital game downloads come from mobile game platforms, of which, we already know, the iOS platform makes up a huge part.
Of course, iOS and the App Store can't be given credit for all of the digital game download trend -- while the App Store certainly has its share of popularity, there are other platforms, such as Xbox Live, Steam and Nintendo's WiiWare and DSiWare, that are also driving game downloads forward.

HP unveils Elite L2201x: super slim 22-inch monitor
During our Monday morning HP deluge, we managed to overlook this rather slender 22-inch monitor. Buried beneath a slew of other announcements in the outfit's latest press release is the Elite L2201x: an LED-backlit display, measuring just 0.4-inches thick. It offers a 1920 x 1080 display, 5000:1 contrast ratio, and a DisplayPort for hooking up. It may not be the slimmest screen we've ever come across, but we'd say it's a mighty fine monitor, and for $250, it's a relatively cheap date to boot. The Elite L2201x lands stateside June 1st.

BillMinder releases iPad app, adds new features
We took a look at BillMinder 3 for the iPhone a few months back, and the folks at Return7 let us know they were working on an iPad version. That app is now available for US$4.99 and can sync with the iPhone version, which is $1.99.

Remember when Google said it wouldn't release the source code to Android 3.0 ("Honeycomb") because it "wasn't ready"? App review: TweetComb for Honeycomb tablets
Until now, Honeycomb users looking to get their social networking fix have had to rely on blown up smartphone apps that don't make particularly good use of the additional screen real estate. Zynga hires team behind cocos2d
Zynga has picked up yet another relatively big-name iOS developer. After acquiring Wonderland, Area/Code and Newtoy earlier this year, the social gaming giant has now acquired the team behind the iOS physics engine cocos2d. Novel Concepts' ThinSink claims title of world's thinnest air-cooled heat sink
Heat sinks may not ordinarily be the most exciting sort of component -- but the world's thinnest air-cooled heat sink? That's something. According to the folks at Novel Concepts, their new credit card-sized, 0.75mm thick ThinSink has now laid claim to that title, and it may soon lead to thinner tablets, laptops and monitors. What's more, despite its small size, the company claims that the ThinSink still has a cooling efficiency "25 times greater than today's best microprocessor heat sinks," and it consumes just 0.031 watts of electricity when equipped with a fan spinning at 6,000 RPM. iPad 2 would have bested 1990s-era supercomputers
If you want to know which supercomputer is the fastest in the world, you check the Top 500 list. The keeper of that list is Dr. Jack Dongarra, who teaches at the University of Tennessee.
Dongarra is one of the authors of the Linpack computing benchmark, introduced way back in 1979. With this benchmark, supercomputing sites can rate computers' relative performance at solving a set of linear equations.
