All remaining Mac models to refresh in 2011, says analyst
All of Apple's remaining Mac models should get an update in the next few months, says Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu. The analyst quotes checks with supply chain sources as saying that the MacBook, Mac Pro, Mac mini and MacBook Air should all be updated in the near future. Apple updated the MacBook Pro in February, and the iMac just yesterday.

Antitrust class action lawsuit filed against Apple, others over anti-poaching agreements
The law firm of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein has announced that they have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple and other major tech companies on behalf of a Lucasfilm employee. The lawsuit alleges that the tech companies took part in illegal "no solicitation" agreements that barred them from poaching each others employees. These anti-poaching agreements led to "eliminate competition and cap pay for skilled employees" according to the lawsuit.

Video: Hülle schützt MacBook Pro vor 6-Meter-Fall vom Balkon
Ein Bisschen verrückt sind sie wohl schon, die Jungs von G-Form. In den letzten Tagen fielen sie bereits mit Videos, in denen sie ein iPad aus einem Flugzeug warfen oder eine Bowling Kugel auf ein iPad fallen ließen auf, um ihre Hüllen zu promoten. Heute brachten sie ein ähnliches Video, in dem sie ein MacBook Pro in einer ihrer Hüllen von einer Veranda aus 20 Fuß, also etwa 6 Meter, auf den Boden fallen lassen. Natürlich kommt es ohne Schaden davon und spielt zum Beweis danach munter ein Testvideo ab. Auf den neuen iMacs wurde in den Systemeinstellungen etwas interessantes gefunden - Bei den Tastatur-Einstellungen besteht die Möglichkeit, die Tastatur bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen entsprechend zu beleuchten - Genau wie die MacBook Pros. Dieses Feature benötigt natürlich auch neue Hardware, welche bei diesen neuen iMacs nicht mitgeliefert wird - Bisher verkauft Apple solche auch gar nicht. Dennoch, in den neuen iMacs wird ein neuer Lichtsensor links von der FaceTime-Kamera verbaut, mit dem zusammen auch die Option kam, die Helligkeit des Displays entsprechend anzupassen. Clearwire ditches Rover pre-paid WiMAX service
It's been less than a year since it went live, but Clearwire has now officially dropped its Rover pre-paid WiMAX service, saying that it was simply a way to "test some new pay-as-you-go pricing options and was offered on a limited retail basis in a couple markets." As you may recall, the brand offered just two products -- the Rover Puck WiFi hotspot and a USB stick -- and it gave customers the ability to purchase 4G WiMAX service on a daily, weekly or monthly basis starting at just $5 a day. Lawsuit targets anti-poaching agreements between tech giants
Former Lucasfilm employee Siddharth Hariharan has filed a lawsuit against a long list of tech companies, accusing the group of conspiring to limit compensation for key staff. Joseph Saveri, the attorney representing Hariharan, claims the "no solicitation" agreements, which prohibit companies from poaching employees from competitors, violate antitrust laws. The list of accused companies includes Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit, Lucasfilm and Pixar.

Mac OS X Lion to go through Mac App Store for end users
Apple may be the first to push a desktop OS to its end users through its own app store. Sources said Wednesday that the company's decision to offer the Developer Preview in the Mac App Store will extend to end users. AppleInsider in getting the details was told it would even be the first place to carry the download, with a DVD version only coming slightly afterwards.

2012 Jaguar XJ to have built-in smartphone dock
Jaguar's flagship sedan, the 2012 XJ, will come with a smartphone dock that will show the phone's screen on the car's built-in navigation screen, Pocket-Lint learned. Demonstrated at BlackBerry World in Orlando this week with a BlackBerry Torch, users will have the ability to control the phones with the car's interface and not the phone's. This includes contact info, music, GPS and more, but browsing the web will be locked out for safety reasons.

Acoustic Poetry concept turns ambient noise into verse
Modern society invests a lot of time and money attempting to drown out our surroundings, but the inability to hear ambient noise can rob one of a sense of place, which can be a very real concern amongst the deaf community. The Acoustic Poetry concept device from British designer Michail Vanis won't miraculously cure the deaf, but it does promise to keep them a bit more in touch. THX creator now at Apple, says Laporte
Apple has hired the creator of Lucasfilm's THX sound standard, Tomlinson Holman, according to This Week in Tech host Leo Laporte. In a Twitter post Laporte explains that he has it "on good authority" that Holman is "joining Apple to run audio." Most recently Holman was a film sound professor at the University of Southern California.

Use SSH scripts to share Safari tabs between two Macs
Our own Brett Terpestra developed two SSH scripts that let you share Safari browser tabs between multiple Macs. This method is perfect for those Mac users with an iMac or a Mac Pro as their main work machine and a Mac laptop as a secondary machine for checking email, instant messaging or light browsing. You know the scenario - an email with your updated project timetable lands in your inbox which is running on your MacBook. You open it in a tab and want to send it your Mac Pro where you have been immersed in work-related research all morning. This pair of tab-sharing scripts lets you do just that.

Dodgy rumor claims iPad 3 is a 'dead cert' for 3D video
An unconventional rumor claimed that Apple was focusing the third-generation iPad on 3D. Isis scales back NFC payment plans
Isis, the coalition of US wireless carriers AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile to bring NFC payments on handsets to the masses, will not go forward as planned earlier, according to reports on Wednesday. While trials were due to start early in 2012, the three carriers have now purportedly agreed to change their approach and make it less advanced. Instead, they will create a "mobile wallet" that will link users' existing Visa, MasterCard or other major credit cards to the account, though this is not official yet.

Shocker! College kids like having iPads in the classroom
E-readers may not be good enough for Princeton's hallowed halls, but students and professors at Oklahoma State University seem to have fallen head over heels for their iPads. Intel Ivy Bridge to be first with 3D transistors
Intel gave word on Wednesday that its upcoming Ivy Bridge processor design would be the first in the world to use new, ultra-dense 3D transistors. Nicknamed Tri-Gate, the designs would change the gates into 3D "fins" that regulate the current on all three sides, not just one. The design gets as much as 37 percent faster performance on a 22 nanometer chip at the same power or could chew just half the power at the same performance as a current-day, 32 nanometer chip.

iOS 4.3.3 makes promised security improvements
Apple has released a relatively minor update of iOS, 4.3.3. The upgrade does however fulfill an earlier promise by improving the security of location data. The size of the location cache file has been reduced, and the cache should no longer be included in iTunes backups. When Location Services are switched off, the cache is deleted entirely, Apple says.

Macworld publishes first round of benchmark results for new iMac
Macworld posted the results of its first benchmark tests for the newly updated family of iMacs this morning. The publication's tests found Apple's latest iMacs to be generally faster than previous iMacs, although certain build-to-order (BTO) models from 2010 still outperformed the new family of iMacs in some tests.
The new top-of-the-line, quad-core 3.1 GHz i5 iMac bested the previous high-end model, a quad-core 2.8 GHz i5 iMac, in every test. Notably, the 3.1 GHz iMac performed 16% faster in the Speedmark 6.5 test and 22% faster in Macworld's iTunes encode test.

American Airlines testing in-flight media streaming, staying curiously mum about content selection
American Airlines would like you to pay for movies and shows you're used to getting for free to give you a new way to keep yourselves entertained at 30,000 feet. The airline is testing Aircell's forthcoming service that will let you stream flicks and TV programs to your own WiFi-enabled device. iOS 4.3.3 available, contains changes to location database
As it said it would do, Apple has made some changes to how it stores and manages the "iOS crowd-sourced location database cache." In particular, it reduces the size of the cache, doesn't back it up to iTunes and deletes the cache when you disable Location Services. Apple came under fire for storing all of your location data and this addresses the bug.
This update is for iPhone 4 (GSM model), 3GS, the iPad 2 and 1st-gen iPad, iPod touch (4th and 3rd generation). Go get it by connecting your iOS device to iTunes and checking for updates.

iOS 4.3.3 erscheint
Apple hat soeben, wie bereits zuvor mehrfach berichtet, das neueste iOS-Update 4.3.3 für iPod touch, iPhone und iPad veröffentlicht; für das Verizon-iPhone in den USA kam Version 4.2.8. Neu in dieser Version ist der Fix für die Geodatenspeicherung, die weltweit für Aufschreie gesorgt hatte. Wie wir bereits schrieben, wird die Größe der dazugehörigen Datenbank reduziert, diese nicht mehr bei Backups mit iTunes gespeichert und komplett gelöscht, wenn man Ortungsdienste abschaltet. Von der verbesserten Batterieleistung findet man kein Wort im Changelog.

75 percent of US physicans own Apple hardware, study claims

New iMacs and HDD+SSD configurations; how do they work?
MacStories points out there is a small, but perhaps important, difference in the "SSD+HDD" option on the new iMacs. You used to simply get two drives you had to manage separately, as in the screenshot here taken from my MacBook Pro (in which I long ago swapped the optical drive for an SSD). For the new models though, Apple now specifically states: "if you configure your iMac with both the solid-state drive and a Serial ATA hard drive, it will come preformatted with Mac OS X and all your applications on the solid-state drive. Then you can use the hard drive for videos, photos, and other files."

Intel will mass produce 22nm 3D transistors for all future CPUs, starting with Ivy Bridge (video)
Looks like 3D isn't just a fad, folks, so long as we're talking about silicon -- Intel just announced that it has invented a 3D "Tri-Gate" transistor that will allow the company to keep shrinking chips, Moore's Law naysayers be damned. Intel says the transistors will use 50 percent less power, conduct more current and provide more 37 percent speed than their 2D counterparts to vertical fins of silicon substrate that stick up through the other layers, and that it could make for cheaper chips too -- currently, the tri-gate technology adds an estimated 2 to 3 percent cost to existing silicon wafers. Nokia says no MeeGo tablet, claims it foresaw need to change
Nokia in an account of an investors' meeting from local paper Helsingin Sanomat revealed that Nokia's first MeeGo hardware wouldn't be a tablet and also tried to deflect criticism for its inability to react to Apple or Google. CEO Stephen Elop reiterated plans to get a MeeGo device on shelves in 2011 but said it wouldn't be a slate like earlier Maemo devices. Intel gives Apple early access to Z68 platform
The 2011 iMac is already making use of Intel's BD82Z68 platform controller hub, various investigations show, including one by TonyMacx86. The Z68 platform is not officially scheduled to debut until May 11th, meaning that Intel has once again given Apple early access to new technology. OCRKit is the OCR engine being ExactScan Pro, a popular scanning utility with built-in drivers for mover than 200 document scanners. Casio Tryx (EX-TR100) review
Given the sheer quantity of marketing muscle that Casio put behind the Tryx, you'd think the company was gearing up to rival Nikon and Canon in the DSLR space. Woz: Paul Allen should stop 'that patent troll thing'
Frequent public speaker and Apple co-creator Steve Wozniak in a speech at the Embedded System Conference openly chastised former Microsoft pioneer Paul Allen for his anti-Internet patent lawsuits. Allen's Interval Licensing case was frankly described as "that patent troll thing" and something Wozniak wanted to discourage. Kauf von Huffington Post drückt AOLs Quartalsergebnis
AOL hat seine Zahlen für das erste Geschäftsquartal 2011 vorgelegt. Die Umsätze aus Werbung und Abonnements sanken erneut im zweistelligen Prozentbereich. Der Gewinn brach sogar um 86 Prozent ein. Er lag im ersten Quartal bei 4,7 Millionen Dollar oder 4 US-Cent je Aktie. Im Vergleichsquartal des Vorjahres hatte AOL noch einen Gewinn von 34,7 Millionen Dollar beziehungsweise 32 Cent pro Aktie eingefahren.

Nvidias Marktanteil nimmt weiter ab
Laut den Analysten von JPR ist Nvidias Marktanteil im ersten Quartal erneut zurückgegangen. The next iPhone will indeed miss the standard June-July release schedule, an AT&T customer representative claims. The statement was made after one customer noticed that his eligibility for a subsidized upgrade had been delayed by over five months, and contacted AT&T for an explanation. Warner Bros. buys Flixster to push universal digital movies
Warner Bros. started off Wednesday with a deal to buy Flixster. The takeover will use the site's movie discovery service and overall technical experience to push its Digital Everywhere initiative, which will eventually provide a "studio-agnostic" way of finding, loading, and managing their media collections regardless of where they are. iMac 2011 teardown shows removable CPU and graphics
An expected iFixit teardown of the 2011 iMac update has shown relatively deep upgrade options for the all-in-one. Although it requires the more difficult step of removing the logic board, the desktop's main processor and graphics are both removable. The AMD Radeon HD video is located on a typical removable card and could theoretically be swapped without trouble from Apple, but a sticker on the Intel processor shows that its heatsink can't be removed without voiding the warranty.

iFixit tears down the latest generation iMac to reveal LG display, removable GPU
iFixit got its hands on the newly announced 21.5-inch iMac and tore the all-in-one down to its screws and casing. The teardown analysis reveals the latest iMac has the same LG-manufactured LED display used in the previous generation iMac and a Thunderbolt port similar to the port found on the latest MacBook Pro models.

NVIDIA losing ground to AMD and Intel in GPU market share
NVIDIA may be kicking all kinds of tail on the mobile front with its ubiquitous Tegra 2 chipset, but back on its home turf of laptop and desktop graphics, things aren't looking so hot. The latest figures from Jon Peddie Research show that the GPU giant has lost 2.5 percentage points of its market share and now accounts for exactly a fifth of graphics chips sold on x86 devices. When you're 9 years old you dream of plenty of things. Thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation, Owain Weinert's dream came true when he got to visit PopCap Games and design his very own video game.

Grafiklösungen: Intel und AMD gewinnen Marktanteile

Neuer iMac: schneller und günstiger
Wie erwartet hat Apple dem iMac gestern ein Update spendiert. Wichtigste Neuerung dürfte die integrierte Thunderbolt-Schnittstelle darstellen, die in sämtlichen neuen iMacs verbaut wird, bei den 27-Zoll-Modellen sogar in zweifacher Ausführung. Die übrigen Verbesserungen entsprechen sanfter Modellpflege, so kommen nun in allen Modellen schnellere Quad-Core-Prozessoren und AMD-Radeon-HD-Grafikchips zum Einsatz. In der Schweiz wurden ausserdem die Preise je nach Modell um 100.- bis 200.- Franken gesenkt.

iSuppli: Markt für mobile Apps wächst 2011 auf 3,8 Milliarden Dollar

The U.S. Department of Justice will launch an in-depth investigation into AT&T proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA, according to a new report. Meanwhile, more evidence that Foxconn will soon begin producing Apple's iPhones and iPads in Brazil has surfaced. Also, a new job posting from Apple for a Maps Application Developer indicates Apple is explicitly looking for someone to revamp the Maps iOS app.

Apple runs second iPad 2 TV ad: 'If You Asked'
Apple on Tuesday night began running its second TV ad for the iPad 2 (below). "If You Asked" jumps from person to person saying what owners would think if you asked them. A parent would find it "intuitive," Apple said, while a musician would find it "inspiring;" it would be "powerful" for a CEO, Apple said, in a nod to the iPad's deep reach into enterprise.

American Airlines to stream video in-flight, grow Wi-Fi
American Airlines said Tuesday that it was testing a new streaming video service for its in-flight Wi-Fi. Rather than use movies stored on the plane, it would pipe movies and TV to users' own devices from an on-plane collection. Platforms weren't named but, given the airline's existing app experience, would likely cover at least Android devices such as the Xoom as well as iPads and iPhones.

Man Page reader Manpower 4.0 adds Cocoa toolbar, printing
Code by Kevin has launched an update to its Unix page-reader, Manpower, now at version 4. The software presents a three-pane display of Unix Man pages, giving a more easily read view of Unix software documentation -- the built-in manual -- normally accessed via the Unix terminal. It supports printing the man pages, or converting them to text or PDF. Other capabilities include search and browse support and bookmarking.

iPad 'If You Asked' TV ad aims for the heartstrings, fails to miss
Granted, I am the sort of dude who will admit to occasionally choking up while watching a television ad (what? C'mon, the AT&T Berlin Wall ad was amazing), but even the most jaded adwatcher might have a moment of something-in-my-eye watching Apple's latest iPad ad, posted at the bottom of the Apple home page and on the company's YouTube page.

Activity Audit updated to 1.1, adds status menu
DssW has released Activity Audit v1.1, a program which creates a journal of application use using calendar events. It is designed not only to track what was used and for how long, but to reveal patterns of activity and usage that can highlight where efficiencies might be improved and energy could be saved. The new version refines the journal process by allowing for auditing to be suspended when the Mac is not actively in use, and now includes a status menu to show when auditing is occurring.

Notificant is a helpful reminder no matter where you are
Carmel Cloud has released the iOS version of Notificant, which ties schedule notifications made on your Mac with your iOS device. The Mac version of this program debuted shortly after the Mac App Store rolled out in January, but the lack of iOS integration caused many not to use it to its full potential.
Notificant also syncs with a web app, which allows you to access your notifications via any browser; that's handy for when you have to integrate a Windows computer into your daily workflow like I do.

DigiTimes: Amazon to unveil tablet to compete with iPad later this year
DigiTimes is reporting that its sources have confirmed that Quanta has received OEM orders from Amazon to begin building a tablet computer. Dell Adamo sequel may use 15.6-inch screen, dip below $1,000
New leaks from sources on Tuesday hinted that Dell's replacement for the Adamo will be more overtly distinct from the MacBook Air that Dell had originally tried to chase. Rather that go for similar sizes, they would start with 15.6-inch screens and focus on being the thinnest at that size. They would use Core i5 and i7 chips, although CNET's tips couldn't glean whether they were low voltage or full power processors.

Report: 40% of App Store game downloads are freemium
Xyologic is a company that analyzes mobile app sales and trends, and its latest report says that a full 40% of game downloads from Apple's App Store consist of freemium titles -- games that are free to download, but make money with ads or in-app purchases. Analyst: Apple will keep growing, become first $1T company
James Altucher of Formula Capital, in an appearance on Yahoo's Daily Ticker, lays out his case that Apple will become the first $1 trillion rated company in history, and argues it should in fact already be there. Citing the company's long history of high growth rates and its ever-growing cash reserves, Altucher says that the company is only trading at around ten times earnings, and that known product plans for the near future -- like the iPad 3, the iPhone 5 and future Mac models -- will continue to drive large growth numbers for the foreseeable future.

Microsoft, RIM announce collaboration, Bing to power BlackBerry search
In what appears to be a joint effort to stave off both Apple and Google, Microsoft and RIM have teamed up to form a mobile partnership. The partnership will put Bing as the default search engine on all BlackBerry devices and Bing Maps as the default mapping software. The surprise announcement was made today at BlackBerry World where Microsoft CEO shocked the audience when he took the stage.
"We're going to invest uniquely into the BlackBerry platform," Ballmer said in his keynote address. "Bing will become the default search provider in the browser and maps. I've never been more excited about where our future is going."

iOS App Store seen holding 60% of mobile app revenue by 2014
In spite of attempts by Google and others, Apple's iOS App Store should still represent the majority of mobile app revenue three years from now, IHS iSuppli estimated on Tuesday. Apple's portal was expected to grab 76 percent of app revenue in 2011, or $2.91 billion, but would still have 60 percent of that by 2014. Android Market was predicted to be quadrupling its share this year, but at $425.36 million would still not be moving fast enough to take the top spot.

AMD's Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition wears the gigahertz crown

QuickerTek outs antennas for Airport Extreme, Time Capsule
QuickerTek has upgraded their external antennas designed to improve both reception and transmission of wireless signals on the on Airport Extreme 802.11n base station and the Time Capsule, now offering 5dBi tri-band antennas compared to the previous 3dBi. The company says the antennas can improve range and signal strength up to three times over the built-in antennas. The company offers three upgrade paths, from do-it-yourself kits to a mail-in service to upgrade existing units to selling units pre-upgraded with the antennas.

Adobe has released its Creative Suite 5.5 software. The big news about Creative Suite 5.5 is, of course, the ability to create content for any number of tablet devices, including the iPad.
