Google and Sprint respond to Google Voice integration issues
You may recall from yesterday that early adopters were having a variety of issues after activating (or attempting to activate) Sprint's new Google Voice integration feature. Well, a full day has passed, and we've had several calls with GV lead Vincent Paquet as well as Brian Smith, Sprint's director of product development. Both executives have said that their respective companies have been hard at work on resolutions to each of the issues we outlined Thursday night, and some customers we spoke to yesterday are now back up and running. Ramp Champ goes free in App Store
Ramp Champ, the Icon Factory's delightful skeeball app, has gone free. Originally $1.99, the app is now yours for the downloading. The Icon Factory's Craig Hockenberry told TUAW, "We're pleased to put the fun and addictive play of the original Ramp Champ into the hands of thousands of new users, all for free."
The new pricing does not affect in-app purchases of premium courses. Hockenberry added, "Players who love the built-in ramps can easily add new ones with a 99¢ in-app purchase."
The courses that ship free with the app are plenty of fun to play with. I paid full price when Ramp Champ first shipped and found it well worth my money. Now you can spend your money on adding extra ramps instead of buying the basic ones. You

Lenovo-funded eBox gaming console renamed iSec, still can't shake Kinect comparisons
Coverage of Eedoo's eBox has thus far largely focused on the China-only game console's similarity to Microsoft's Kinect. Perhaps seeking to shift in perception, the system this week was reintroduced to the world as the Apple-esque iSec -- that's short for "Sports Entertainment Center," highlighting its exercise-centric approach to gaming, with martial arts, skateboarding, and good old-fashioned monster fighting titles having already been demoed. iPhone near passing BlackBerry in US, Android up to 34.7%
New data from comScore for this past March has pointed to Apple nearly passing RIM in smartphone market share for the US. Shipping 18.65 million iPhones helped Apple gain half a point since December to hit 25.5 percent share in its home country. The BlackBerry fell almost five points in the same space of time, dropping to 27.1 percent and close enough that Apple could pass it in the spring.

Apple refurbs: Macs for $1019 or less
Apple's online store today has a variety of refurbished Mac models priced at $1019 or less. Starting at the low end of the scale is the refurb. 13.3-inch MacBook Air with a 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive, it was $999, but has seen a price cut of $150 to $849. Also priced at $849 is the 11.6-inch MacBook Air with a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB solid state drive.

The Mac App Store is full of useful apps, but it's also full of pretty silly little ones. Today's Daily Mac App is a mix of both.

Sleek Audio terminates agreement with 50 Cent, puts over-the-ear plans on hold
You may remember our brief run-in with 50 Cent back at CES, where he announced a partnership with Sleek Audio for Sleek by 50, a pair of "wireless hybrid" headphones with built-in Kleer technology. Today the company announced that it has terminated its agreement with G-Unit Brands, 50's licensing company, and that it will be "re-evaluating our Wireless Hybrid over-the-ear headphones at a later date." Debunk: why Apple isn't likely to go to ARM for MacBooks
One rumor floating online late Thursday has contended that Apple would switch to ARM for the MacBook line. The claim from unnamed sources for SemiAccurate would have Apple wait until at least mid-2013 to use the first 64-bit ARM processors, like NVIDIA's Project Denver, and was supposedly talking to TSMC and others to get chip production. We have reason to doubt why this would come to pass, and we expect Apple to stay on Intel for quite some time.

Microsoft wants buyers to 'do the math' and select a netbook over a MacBook Air
As Ronald Reagan once famously said, "There you go again." Microsoft has unleashed some new ads in Canada that suggest if you buy a PC laptop instead of a Mac you can use the money you save to take a trip to Hawaii.

Editorial: A less tactile future, and how to avoid it
For the past few weeks, I've been doing most of my typing on a Matias Tactile Pro 3 -- a mechanical keyboard that's much like the original Apple Extended or IBM Model M keyboards, in function, if not appearance. If you're not old enough to remember those, that means it relies on mechanical key switches instead of the rubber membrane used by most keyboards these days. You feel, and hear every key press -- and, after you've used one for a while, you'll be much more aware of the mushy alternative hiding under other keyboards, and likely find them quite unsatisfying.

News: LG displays to blame for iPad 2 shortages?
Problems at LG Displays’ production lines may have played a part in Apple’s struggle to meet demand for the iPad 2, according to a new report. Briefly: Email Archiver promo, Lifecases outs Greek cases
Spot Documents has announced that its tool for archiving Apple Mail will be offered for free for a limited time. Email Archiver saves all of a user's e-mails as PDFs, and automatically organizes these files into a hierarchical folder structure. Each PDF includes all relevant e-mail header information, while attachments are stored in a folder beside their corresponding messages. Google adds Flash to Instant Previews, warns on overreliance
Google picked Friday to add Flash support to its Instant Previews feature even as it cautioned against using Adobe's plugin too heavily. The move lets users with a regular web browser see a Flash-heavy site's animations, layout, and videos in the quick view sidebar instead of plugin errors. The approach would work immediately for any site whose details were scraped by Google's regular bots but would be turned off when the preview had to be generated on-demand.

LG trots out XE1 and XE2 USB 3.0 drives for the Korean market
If you've been on the hunt for a USB 3.0 drive to pair with your newly minted notebook, the list of options just keeps on growing. LG just released the XE1 and XE2, a pair of 2.5-inch HDDs available in 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB sizes. The only difference: the XE1 has a glossy finish and its sibling, a matte one -- both more conservative-looking than what Samsung's been peddling. Smartphone-Absatz steigert sich um 80 Prozent

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 spotted in the wild
We've already seen it pictured and detailed, but Chinese website Mydrivers.com has now scored what appear to be the very first in-the-wild shots of Lenovo's new super-slim ThinkPad X1. Untethered jailbreaks, unlocks arrive for iOS 4.3.3
Untethered jailbreaking and carrier unlocking is now available for iOS 4.3.3, the unofficial iPhone Dev Team says. redsn0w and PwnageTool have been updated to support jailbreaking the firmware, which was released by Apple on May 4th. Unlocking requires ultrasn0w, and carefully avoiding certain pitfalls. Only certain iPhone 4, 3G and 3GS basebands are supported for example, and people must skip using redsn0w, turning instead to a custom IPSW file to update to iOS 4.3.3 while preserving a compatible baseband.

San Francisco cellphone radiation bill put on hold
San Francisco has effectively dropped its cellphone radiation warning law this week by postponing it without a new enforcement date. The bill, which was to have required clear radiation levels posted next to phones in stores, had already been delayed twice and would have taken effect June 15. City Supervisor John Avalos explained to the Chronicle that the law was likely to come back but would have "somewhat less" information than originally planned, such as a guide to reducing radiation exposure.

US Senator Al Franken has named the Apple and Google witnesses who will be appearing at a judiciary subcommittee on mobile privacy. Speaking on behalf of Apple will be Guy L. "Bud" Tribble, a VP of software technology. Google's representative will be Alan Davidson, a director of public policy for the Americas. Alcatel-Lucent bestätigt Jahresprognose nach solidem ersten Quartal

AT&T finally allows non-Market apps on Android phones
AT&T with the launch of the Infuse 4G last night at least partly reversed a longstanding policy on Android phones that had drawn criticism from those hoping to switch away from the iPhone. Review units given out at the event had the option to load apps from "unknown sources" beyond Android Market that had previously been purposefully removed on all AT&T Android hardware. It wasn't evident whether this was specific to the Infuse 4G or a broad policy, but as one of AT&T's flagship phones would be more likely to represent the carrier's overall attitude.

Deutsche Telekom verkauft im ersten Quartal 300 000 iPhone
Die Deutsche Telekom präsentierte am heutigen Freitag in Bonn ihre Quartalszahlen für das erste Quartal 2011. Dabei musste Telekom-Chef René Obermann einen kräftigen Gewinnrückgang vermelden. T-Mobile loses 99,000 customers to 'competitive pressures'
T-Mobile USA warned that its situation was quickly getting worse with more subscriber losses. It shed a total of 99,000 customers in its winter quarter, more than the 77,000 from a year ago and four times the 23,000 it lost in the fall. Rogers offers early hardware upgrade options
Canadian telecommunications provider Rogers has outlined a new scheme that will let subscribers upgrade to newer handsets ahead of the end of their contract. The early upgrade program lets users upgrade as soon as six months into an existing contract. Apple climbed its way into the elite Top 50 of the Fortune 500 list for this year. The Cupertino company climbed 21 spots to claim the #35 position between Medco Health solutions and Boeing. iPad 2 sells out in 4 hours in Beijing
The iPad 2 made its official debut in China on May 6 and the popular tablet device sold out in just four hours at the flagship Apple store in Beijing. Friday's Chinese launch of the iPad 2 was greeted with long lineups, reports say. AppleInsider remarks that at the Beijing Apple Store, people began lining up at 5PM on Thursday; sales began at 8AM Friday, but by 10AM hundreds of people were still waiting in line. ASUS confirms Eee Pad Transformer shortage, cites demand
ASUS partly confirmed rumors of Eee Pad Transformer shortages on Friday through a statement from spokesman David Chang. He didn't acknowledge talk of just 10,000 of the Android 3.0 tablets shipping in April but anticipated that it would take at least a month to get back on track, with 100,000 in May and 200,000 in June. Quality issues with LG manufactured panels to blame for iPad 2 shortage
Quality control problems with LCD panels from LG Display may have contributed to the prolonged shortage of the iPad 2. According to the report from Digitimes, early batches of the 9.7-inch panels supplied by LG had a light leak issue that limited LG's ability to meet demand. As a result, LG only produced 3.2 million panels in the first quarter of 2011, a figure that trails the four million panels produced by Samsung. This report corroborates an earlier report from IHS iSuppli that blamed the iPad 2 shortage on an unknown manufacturing problem with LCDs.

MacBooks bald mit ARM-Prozessoren?
Sechs Jahre nach der Ankündigung des Intel-Switches spielt Apple mit dem Gedanken, die Hardware-Architektur der Mac-Plattform ein weiteres Mal zu wechseln. Apple trumps Nokia for smartphone share on Nokia's home turf
Apple produced a symbolic win late Thursday after an IDC study revealed that it had beaten Nokia for smartphone market share in Nokia's core market of Western Europe. The iPhone slipped from 24.6 percent share a year ago to 20.8 percent, but Nokia's market share collapsed from 40.6 percent to just 19.6 percent in one year, giving Apple the top spot. Apple shipped 49 percent more iPhones to the region to hit 4.4 million where Nokia saw its shipments drop from 4.9 million to 4.2 million.

Geekbench results show 2011 iMacs 25 percent faster
The first benchmarking tests are in on the new 2011 iMacs, and early results show a fairly consistent 25 percent improvement across the board over the previous models, and a 70 percent average improvement over the last of the Core2Duo iMac models, Primate Labs reports. It should be noted that the company used its own Geekbench 2 to obtain their results, which does not measure video card or storage improvements, being limited to just processor and RAM performance.

LG Display blamed for iPad 2 shortage, Chimei due in May
A large part of the iPad 2's shortage issues were put at LG Display's feet on Thursday night through claims from supply sources. LG Display reportedly had light leakage problems for screens made at its sixth-generation LCD plant and could only ship 3.2 million iPad LCDs between January and March. Enduro is an old Atari game that's now on the App Store, and it's available as a universal version for iPhone or iPad. Personally, I don't really remember this one (it's a racing game that's similar to Pole Position, though the big innovation was that you could race through different environments like fog or snow), but bigger Atari fans than myself might be excited to see that it's now playable on iOS.
The reason why Enduro is interesting, however, is that, as Touch Arcade reports, it's an unsanctioned port. Atari has already released several games for the iPhone

Und wieder einmal gibt es gute Gründe die Herrschaft der Roboter nicht zu fürchten. Ein Team von Wissenschaftlern in der Schweiz am EPFL hat Alice Microbots mit virtuellen "Genen" ausgestattet und ihnen als Aufgabe unter anderem das Sammeln von Nahrung aufgetragen. Teilen konnten sie optional auch, und sieh da, die teilenden Roboter vermehrten sich mehr. Beweisen werden sollte damit die Hamilton Regel. Ob sie damit bewiesen wurde wissen wir nicht, schliesslich kann man ja programmieren was man will, aber dennoch beruhigt es uns. Video nach dem Break.

Apple schaltet Sync Services ab, Outlook/Entourage for Mac-Nutzer betroffen
Seit gestern nutzt MobileMe nicht mehr die Sync Services, Apples hauseigene Plattform für die Synchronisierung zwischen Anwendungen und den unterstützten Geräten. Dies führte unter anderem zu Problemen bei der kabellosen Synchronisation von Kalendern.

Untethered Jailbreak für iPhone, iPod touch und iPad erschienen
iOS 4.3.3 ist erschienen, hat aber nicht die Sicherheitslücke behoben, die Stefan Esser gefunden hat. Daher ging es relativ schnell, bis die Jailbreak-Tools redsn0w und PwnageTool auf den neusten Stand gebracht worden – und diese sind nun erschienen. iPad 2-Benutzer haben momentan dennoch das Nachsehen.

Acoustics von Annette Douglas: Schallabsorbierende Vorhänge aus der Schweiz

Eher selten kommen revolutionäre Textilien aus Dübendorf und St. Gallen. Das wollten wir uns nicht entgehen lassen. In der Weberei Weisbrod in Hausen am Albis wurden diese schallabsorbierenden Vorhänge von Annette Douglas Textiles entwickelt, die bis zu 5 Mal mehr Schall als sonstige transparente Vorhänge schlucken, und sich somit bestens als Geräuschkulissenkiller in Büros eignen. Aw 0,5 - 0,7 klingt für unsere unerfahrenen Ohren allerdings nicht nach sonderlich viel, die Hoffnung unerkannt hinter dem Vorhang Bürofeinde anzubrüllen ist also wohl noch nicht erfüllt. Btw. die Vorhänge sind waschbar und schwer entflammbar.

Via hat mit dem Nano X2 einen neuen stromsparenden Dual-Core-Prozessor vorgestellt, der zwei 64-Bit-Kerne vereint und eine Leistungsaufnahme von 5 Watt aufweist. iOS 5: Updates ohne iTunes, weiterhin lauffähig auf iPhone 3GS
In ziemlich genau einem Monat, auf der am 6. Juni startenden Worldwide Developers Conference, wird Apple aller Voraussicht nach die nächste Version seines Mobile-Betriebssystems iOS vorstellen. Apple-intern scheint iOS 5 bereits intensiv getestet zu werden. Zahlreiche Entwickler von Drittanbietersoftware berichten über Einträge von iOS-5-Geräten in ihren Zugriffsstatistiken. Darunter befinden sich offenbar auch zahlreiche Einträge von iPhones des Typs 3GS sowie von iPod-touch-Modellen der 3. Generation. Es ist also gut möglich, dass die nächste Version weiterhin auf allen iOS 4.3 kompatiblen iPhones lauffähig sein wird. Denkbar wäre, dass Apple jedoch den Funktionsumfang einschränken könnte, ähnlich wie bei iOS 4 auf dem iPhone 3G.

The latest figures from IDC show a 79.7 percent expansion of the global smartphone market between this time last year and today, which has resulted in 99.6 million such devices being shipped in Q1 of 2011. Wie SemiAccurate erfahren haben will, wird Apple in den Notebooks langfristig auf ARM-Prozessoren umschwenken. Erst kürzlich bekanntgewordene Gerüchte, wonach Intel und TSMC zukünftig für Apple die AMR-Prozessoren fertigen könnte, erscheinen so in einem ganz anderen Licht. Sony verdächtigt Anonymous hinter PSN-Angriff

Admiring the beauty of an iPhone 'Aged to Perfection'
I like this a lot -- a blogger over at the design mind blog is admiring the look of gadgets like the iPhone that have been "Aged to Perfection." In other words, gadgets that are well-used and that carry the mark of being carried around. Maybe it's just because I'm an iPhone user that frets over every little mark and scratch my iPhone gets, but I'm surprised by just how good the beaten-up iPhone in the picture above looks. No, it's not as sleek or fresh as the beautiful pictures of new products Apple posts on its website, but it's beautiful in another way. Nielsen: iPad maintains 82% of tablet market
No surprises here: the iPad is dominating the tablet market in the US right now, with over 80 percent of users owning a version of Apple's tablet. The latest survey by Nielsen gives that figure, and says that 3G and Wi-Fi versions are almost equally split among owners, with 39% sticking with Wi-Fi, and 43% preferring 3G. "Dominating" is exactly the right word, too -- the Samsung Galaxy is the next tablet on the list, with only a 4% market share, and the Motorola Xoom only showed up with 2%. Sure, the tablet market is still developing quickly, but for now, Apple has it locked down and then some.

UK newspaper The Telegraph offers subscriptions through iPad
The UK newspaper The Telegraph has released version 2.0 of its iPad app. The updated app features a 30-day archive, night reading mode, and greater depth of content including video, picture galleries, graphics and cartoon archives. However, the big feature of the updated app is the pricing plans.
Users can now download the paper each day for £1.19 (US$1.99). Admittedly, that is rather pricey, but The Telegraph makes up for its daily rates by offering monthly subscriptions for £9.99 (U$16.99). That's 70% off the daily rate and considering The Telegraph is published every day, that's quite a bit of information for your buck (or quid). Harvard researchers have married a smartphone to a metal detector to create PETALS, a low cost way to improve mine detection in third-world countries. I'm neither a doctor nor a lawyer, but you don't have to have an MD to realize that medical apps are becoming an ever-more-important tool in managing our healthcare choices, costs and overall wellness. In a similar vein, medical accessories to our iDevices could make home medical care cheaper and easier.
Whether you're monitoring your blood sugar, looking up first aid advice or trying to find an emergency clinic, mobile medical apps are going to be huge; that is, they will be if the legal system doesn't stifle innovation in the space. As for hardware -- where are the devices we were promised?

Nuclear fusion startup gets Jeff Bezos backing, won't be dropping any bombs
Here's a phrase we never though we'd utter: Bezos is the bomb! Okay, so maybe a nuke reference isn't exactly appropriate here, considering Jeff Bezos is actually backing a company that's looking to create cheap energy through nuclear fusion, but we couldn't resist. VH1 introduces "co-viewing" app for iPad
I am intrigued by this growing trend of "co-viewing" or "second screen" mobile apps: These are apps designed to be used while you're watching or doing something else, either something like enjoying a live concert or watching a movie or TV show. Dear Aunt TUAW,
During the day, I often switch between the screen on my 13" Unibody MacBook and an external monitor. Of course, this wreaks havoc upon all my poor windows with resizing, moving, and so forth.
I have to drag them back to their places, and scold them for their impertinence. How dare they move?!
Is there a window manager app that will remember where I like my windows, and move them back where they belong in each of these display sizes?

Android Market could surpass App Store in size this year, research suggests
According to German research group research2guidance, The Android Marketplace could surpass Apple's App Store in size this year. As TechCrunch points out, another analytics company, Distimo, paints a similar picture. The research groups assume that the current growth rates of both markets remain the same. If so the crossover date will happen sometime this August when both app stores hit 425,000 available apps.

Google Earth gets optimized for Honeycomb tablets, interior photos hit Google Maps next week

Laut dem Marktforschungs-Unternehmen Nielsen ist Apples iPad weiterhin stark auf dem wachsenden Tablet-Markt, der momentan von mehr als 200 Geräten bevölkert wird. EA iOS revenues up 100%, Firemint mentioned
EA held a conference call yesterday to talk about the past year's revenues, and it's no surprise that the mobile division is doing great. The mobile revenue total was $70 million for the last quarter, up 27% from the same period last year. It doesn't sound like things were quite as busy as the holiday season that set records recently, but iOS and its mobile counterparts are definitely a moneymaker for the big traditional gaming company. iOS specifically, says EA, is up "over 100%" in revenues from the previous year. Creative's new Bluetooth speakers sound vaguely familiar
Creative's family of Bluetooth speakers got a few more additions today. The company unveiled the wireless one-piece D80, which for most intents and purposes, is identical to its colorful sibling the D100, save for a lower price tag at $50 and a loss of battery power. The $300 ZiiSound D5x, meanwhile, looks an awful lot like 2010's D5, though this one plays nice with the newly announced D3x modular speaker and DSx modular subwoofer, both of which are priced at $150 a pop.
