Apple wins first round in patent fight with Nokia
A Judge with the International Trade Commission in Washington has sided with Apple in a dispute Nokia brought claiming the iPhone was violating key patents.
Bloomberg News and other wire services report that the ITC has found that Apple isn't violating 5 Nokia patents. Nokia had asked the Commission to bar the sale of the iPhone. Apple doesn't have any comment on the decision today and a Nokia spokesperson in Finland says the company does not agree there has been no violation. The patents in question are related to cameras, battery life, messaging, speakers and the touch screen.

Wham-O's Frisbee Forever iOS app promises to change backyard fun... forever

Apple growth expected to outpace IBM, HP
Forrester Research CEO George Colony has placed a prediction that Apple's growth will continue to outpace that of rivals IBM and HP. The latter companies are expected to fall behind, in terms of yearly revenue, as early as 2013. Colony anticipates Apple's revenues to exceed $200 billion during the same period of time.

iPad 2 international launch causes people to line up in line all over again
You may or may not know this, but the iPad 2 became available in 22 countries today, and from the looks of it above (snapped at London's Regent Street store), waiting in line was part of the deal. Now, we have this theory that people love to line up for anything, so we're not going to draw any conclusions about how dreamy the product is, but please, if you shot any line photos today, feel free to send them our way and we'll throw them in our post after the break.

Apple not planning to release iPad 2 keyboard dock?
Apple's senior vice president of marketing, Phil Schiller, has reportedly sidestepped a question from a customer who sent an e-mail inquiry regarding the possibility of a keyboard dock dedicated to the iPad 2. According to an alleged exchange posted on 9to5Mac, the executive responded by highlighting the device's virtual keyboard and convenience of the Bluetooth accessory.

Pulse News pushes out a significant update for iPhone news junkies

MacTech Magazine has announced the 2011 MacTech Conference for IT Pros and Mac developers, to be held this November 2-4 in Los Angeles. Tragedy in Japan hasn't "meaningfully impacted iPad 2 supply"
The Japanese earthquake had a devastating effect on the people of Japan and temporarily shut down many manufacturing facilites. Analysts speculated this disaster might have produced a shortage of key components used in the electronics manufacturing process, but according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, this shortage will have minimal effect on the future supply of the iPad 2.

Keine Feuchtigkeitssensoren im iPad 2
Nachdem in frühreren iOS-Geräten immer wieder fälschlicherweise die Feuchtigkeitsanzeige ausgelöst wurde, scheint Apple diesem Problem nun ein für alle Mal ein bereiten zu wollen, indem diese einfach nicht mehr verbaut werden. Diese kleinen Anzeigen waren zuvor im Dock Connector und im Kopfhöreranschluss zu finden. Mitarbeiter im Apple Store konnten so prüfen, ob das Gerät nass wurde und damit die Garantie erloschen sei.Mit dem iPad 2 kam ein neuer Kopfhöreranschluss und bei der Gelegenheit wurde auch gleich besagte Anzeige entfernt, dies bestätigen auch Dokumente der Apple Genius Datenbank: Beim ersten iPad wird geraten, die Detektoren anzuschauen, um im Zweifelsfall eine Garantie zu verweigern, beim neuen Modell heißt es nur noch, man solle den SIM-Karten-Slot auf Korrosion überprüfen.

Im Gegensatz zu den letzten iPhone-Werbespots aus der alten Werbekampagne fangen Werbespots nun mit dem Satz "If you don't have an iPhone" an und enden mit "Yup, if you don't have an iPhone, well, you don't have an iPhone" und zeigen somit, was man nicht machen kann, wenn man kein iPhone hat.Zu den drei Werbespots von letzter Woche kommt nun ein neuer Spot, diesmal mit Rahmenhandlung Game Center. News: ITC: Apple did not infringe on Nokia patents
A U.S. trade panel today ruled that Apple did not violate any of five Nokia patents. Reuters reports that the patents were for electronic devices, including mobile phones, portable music players, and computers. iPad 2 video mirroring to Mac, the cheap and dirty way
Earlier this week, I wrote a lengthy post about how Erica Sadun and I were struggling to find a way to capture video from an iPad 2 on a Mac. Erica wanted to do screencasts, my goal was to have a good way to grab live video from an iPad 2 and broadcast it on TUAW TV Live. We both had a secondary requirement -- whatever the solution ended up being, it had to be inexpensive.

RIM says carriers' 'jaws dropped' at 2011 BlackBerrys, 6.1
RIM during the conference call discussing its latest results late Thursday gave hints that it expected much from its 2011 BlackBerry roadmap and OS 6.1. Co-chief Jim Balsillie said that "jaws dropped" among carriers and that they had an "outstanding" level of commitment, even in the face of devices from rivals. Probing shows tougher screen, no liquid sensors on iPad 2
The iPad 2's screen design is even more durable than that of the iPad 1, claims iFixYouri. The repair outfit recently conducted a series of tests on parts for both tablets, attempting to break the screens by dropping objects on them, or flexing them by hand or with a plank of wood. Whereas the iPad 1 screens invariably broke with enough effort, the iPad 2 parts refused to crack until extreme hand-bending was used.

Apple veröffentlicht iOS 4.3.1
Beseitigt Grafikfehler, WLAN-Probleme und mehr Apple hat heute iOS 4.3.1 veröffentlicht. Bei dem Update handelt sich um ein reines Bugfix-Release. Das heisst, es enthält Fehlerbehebungen, aber keine neuen Features. Laut Apple löst es Probleme im Zusammenspiel mit einigen mobilen Netzwerken, beseitigt das Bildschirmflimmern mancher TV-Geräte bei Verwendung des Apple Digital AV Adapters und behebt einen gelegentlich auftretenden Grafikfehler beim iPod touch 4G. Ausserdem behebt das Update Authentifizierungsfehler bei bei einigen Webdiensten für Unternehmen. iOS 4.3.1 lässt sich wie gewohnt über iTunes herunterladen. Alternativ stehen für die jeweiligen iOS-Modelle auch direkte Downloads zur Verfügung:

Kodak wants $1B in royalties revenue from Apple, RIM
At about 5:00 PM in Washington, D.C., today, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will decide if it should review a judge's findings from January that concluded neither Apple's iPhone or RIM's Blackberry infringed patents held by Eastman Kodak Company. Antonio Perez, CEO of Kodak, told Bloomberg a victory could be worth more than US$1 billion in royalty revenue for the beleaguered company, which lost almost half its market value in the past year.
"This is a lot of money, big money," Perez told Bloomberg.
The dispute centers on a patent broadly described as an "image-preview feature in camera phones." In 2009, Kodak filed similar complaints

Comcast's Xfinity TV iOS app gets more shows, favorites
Comcast on Friday rolled out a new update to the Xfinity TV iOS app (free, App Store) to bolster its on-demand streaming and remote control features. The app now has more overall shows and includes content from majors such as the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and the BBC. Viewers can now mark channels as favorites and get a custom channel listing dedicated just to frequently watched networks.

Nikon D5100 may already be shipping
Nikon's long rumored D5100 may already be shipping to stores ahead of an imminent launch, more than one source said Friday. Canadian stores are purportedly already receiving the entry DSLR in large quantities ahead of a release in the near future. Apple schafft Filesharing via Samba ab
Bislang war der Samba Server ein fest integrierter Bestandteil von Mac OS X. Comcast's Xfinity TV app for iOS updated with more streaming and customization
Comcast is back with what it's calling the third major release of its Xfinity TV app for iOS, and while the product team says it's added streaming content from IFC, Adult Swim, BBC and more the key upgrade is in customizations. Barnes & Noble: e-books to overtake paper in two years
Barnes & Noble executive Marc Parrish in a presentation at GigaOM's Big Data Conference predicted that e-books would dominate book sales in an absolute sense in two years. He expected the industry to "totally shift" sometime within the period based on a combination of rapid device adoption and usage habits. About 18 million e-readers should be sold this year versus just 900,000 in 2009; 30 percent of US readers look at both digital and paper books, according to Forrester and Gartner research.

Apple reportedly working on music locker launch
Stop me if you've heard this one before: Apple is working on cloud-based music storage.
The Music Void suggests that Apple has sealed a deal with the Warner Music Group in regards to an online music "locker" that will be a part of a forthcoming update to MobileMe. Apple is supposedly using that deal to persuade other labels to jump on board.

An der japansichen Universität Keio haben Schlaumeier einen Telepräsenz-Bot namens TEROOS ausgetüftelt, der auf der Schulter getragen wird, via Skype angebunden ist und sich mit einer beeindruckenden Gesichtsausdruckasuwahl in jede Konversation ferninvolvieren kann. Der Bot lässt sich zudem mit sechs Freiheitsgraden auf der Schulter bewegen, womit er die Situation besser im Blick haben dürfte als sein Wirtsmensch. Pulse 2.0 for Android, iOS adds social feeds, triples speed
Pulse wrapped up the week by launching a major upgrade to its news reader. The Pulse News 2.0 update for the iPad (free, App Store), iPhone (App Store), and Android (Market) all add social feeds. Commonwealth Bank's Sydney swaps employee Dells for MacBook Airs
Staff at the Commonwealth Bank in Sydney, Australia are preparing to move to a new location, where a fleet of 11" MacBook Airs will replace their Dell desktops.
According to website iTnews, most of the desktop Dell computers used by the bank's 4,000 employees will be replaced with the MacBook Airs. However, those machines will continue to run Windows. "It is just a hardware change," the bank noted in an email obtained by iTnews. It's presumed that the move is meant to prevent bank employees from having to learn a new operating system. iOS 4.3.1 released, fixes a few bugs
Apple's just dropped iOS 4.3.1 on iTunes users across the land, fixing a handful of issues related to enterprise apps, AV-out, iPod touch graphics problems, and cellular network connections; not the most exciting changelog, but it's better than a slap across the face. As usual, the update is available for pretty much the full suite of iOS products -- iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch alike. Go on, grab it!

Apple refurbs: iPads from $479, iPods from $99
Apple's online store continues to carry a decent selection of refurbished first generation iPads starting at $479 for the 16GB Wi-Fi and 3G model. Currently the 3G iPads go up to $659 for the 64GB configuration. A Wi-Fi only 64GB iPad is also on the list for $529 after a $70 price break.

iOS 4.3.1 fixes cellular, video glitches
As expected, Apple has released iOS 4.3.1, a minor firmware update for its handheld devices. The patch appears to be aimed strictly at bugfixes, for instance correcting graphics glitches on the iPod touch that were spawned by iOS 4.3. It similarly copes with flickering on some TVs when using the Apple Digital AV adapter.

International iPad 2 lines rival those in US [photos]
The international launch of the iPad 2 has triggered launch lines hundreds long similar to those in the US, including for one of our editors in Ottawa, Canada. Reports from the flagship Sydney, Australia store, one of the first to carry the iPad 2 outside of the US, had lines ranging into the hundreds. The more recent UK launch had hundreds and potentially thousands at the multiple London-area stores, such as the original Regent Street shop or Covent Garden.

Acer announces UK Iconia Tab pricing: Windows or Android starting at £449

Real Racing 2 HD dev promises true 1080p output in update
The next major update of Real Racing 2 HD will, with an iPad 2, support true 1080p output to a TV or external display, says developer Firemint. We've yet to see any sort of official announcement, but folks have been flooding various deal sites this morning with reports that Verizon is now selling the original iPad for just $299.99 in-store. It's a beautiful day in Dublin to be standing in line for the international launch of iPad 2, but apparently Dubliners have better things to do. Either that, or I'm just the only one obsessed about it since last night. Morning checks at Compu b and HMV on Grafton Street in Central Dublin were met with bustling sidewalks but no iPad queues. I have confirmed with Compu b that they will have stock and are the only Apple reseller that seems to have a plan for today. MacTech Conference 2011 has been announced for November 2-4, 2011 in Los Angeles. Registration is now open with a limited number of early bird slots available. Samsung starts baking 30nm 4Gb LPDDR2 chips, packaging 2GB mobile RAM in April
When it comes to mobile RAM, capacity is often what pops to mind first while we overlook speed and power consumption, but Samsung's latest delivery is worth the extra attention. Earlier this month, said Korean giant started producing 30nm 4Gb 1066Mbps LPDDR2 (or simply Mobile DDR2) chips, in order to phase out its 40nm ones that topped 2Gb at a 800Mbps transmission rate. To put it in perspective, a 40nm 1GB package consists of four 2Gb chips, whereas the new 30nm one will only need two 4Gb chips, thus reducing the package thickness by 20 percent (down to 0.8mm) and power consumption by 25 percent. Apple aiming to 'radically improve' iOS location technology
Apple has opened a new job posting which suggests a major overhaul of the Maps app in iOS, as well as the platform's general location technology. The position is simply identified as iOS Maps Application Developer, but asks for someone to help "radically improve how people interact with maps and location-based services." Candidates must have a BS in Computer Science or an equivalent, and be familiar with object-oriented programming and design, particularly in terms of apps and user interfaces.

QuickCal for Mac: natural language events and todos for iCal
QuickCal has been one of my favorite ways to add items to iCal. It started with a Dashboard widget that let me use natural language to add calendar events. I loved it (actually wrote about it back in '09). Then it became an iOS app, QuickCal Mobile, and I was able to add entries with blazing speed while on-the-go, as well as view all of my upcoming appointments within the app. It currently has a place on my iPhone dock for instant access. Das hat sich die Design-Bude Monocomplex fein ausgetüftelt: Ihr "Free Form Ruler" kommt in Form eines klassischen Bleistifts daher und zeigt auf einem kleinen Display die Strecken an, die man gerade "gezeichnet" hat. Das Konzept sieht eigentlich vor, dass der Messstift ohne Mine kommt, aber die dürfte sich wohl problemlos ergänzen lassen. Damit sieht das Messlineal wohl alt aus.

Xperia Play delayed by O2 UK due to software bugs, what are the other carriers doing?
Oh, woe is us. Or, to be more precise, woe is us if we wanted the Xperia Play on the UK's O2 network on the day of its release, April 1st. The British carrier has been candid in admitting it found software bugs on the Play and is holding back release of the gamer-friendly device until those have been ironed out. New iPhone TV ad touts gaming, Game Center
While missing from the company's website, Apple has begun airing a new iPhone TV ad, simply dubbed "Game Center." The spot claims that Apple has the "largest selection of games on any phone," and provides two examples in the form of EA's Scrabble and Epic Games' Infinity Blade. Flex testing iPad glass
The folks at iFixYouri had some glass panels from an iPad 1 and an iPad 2 laying around the shop and did some informal tests to see which panel would break under stress. An earlier analysis by iFixit revealed the glass in the iPad 2 was 27% thinner than the iPad 1. The California repair company questioned whether this would affect the durability of the iPad 2's display. Apple appears to be developing a "smart TV" prototype, according to Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty. The analyst cites "checks in Asia," referring to Apple's suppliers. What Apple might be putting into the prototype is unknown; Huberty speculates, though, that a completed TV might merge "TV/Video content, gaming, DVR, as well as other features like apps and FaceTime into one product."

New iPhone ad features Game Center
Apple released another "If you don't have an iPhone" advertisement that promotes Game Center on the iOS platform. The short, but sweet video introduces the iPhone as the smartphone with the largest number of games and a built-in social network for gaming. Introduced with iOS 4.0, Game Center sets Apple apart from its competition. The closest competitor to Game Center is the Xbox Live integration on Windows Phone 7. D.dress Continuum: Aus Zeichnung mach Designer-Abendkleid

Die Idee ist groß. Mary Huang hat eine Software entwickelt mit der man sich selber ein Designer-Kleid malen kann, dass dennoch den Stil einer Line bewahrt. Computational Couture nennt sich das, und die Ergebnisse sind wirklich überzeugend, auch wenn die Malmöglichkeiten bislang etwas einfach sind. Der Algorithmus der verwendet wurde heisst Delaunay Triangulation, deshalb nennt sich das Kleid dann auch D.Dress. Kodak may reap $1b on Friday if Apple, RIM verdict reviewed
Kodak chief Antonio Perez in a talk late Thursday said he still hoped to reap over $1 billion in revenue on Friday from its patent complaint against Apple and RIM. An ITC verdict in the phone camera dispute is due to be delivered at 5PM Eastern on Friday that would determine whether it will rethink a dismissal of Kodak's complaints. Nvidia: Quad-Core kann stromsparender als Dual-Core sein

Paranga soll echte Umblättergefühle auf E-Books bringen

Auf der Konferenz Interaction 2011 haben Schlaumeier von der Universität Osaka ein Konzept vorgestellt, mit dem auch beim Hantieren mit E-Books echte Umblättergefühle aufkommen sollen. Das Konzept namens Paranga basiert auf einem Sensor, der registriert ob und wie stark der "Buchrücken" gebogen wird. Entsprechend bekommt der Nutzer dann taktiles Fedback am Daumen durch eine rotierende Walze mit Streifen aus authentischem, analogem Papier. Paranga muss allerdings noch in die Feinabstimmung, bevor man sich über eine Realisierung Gedanken macht, noch ist die Blätterei nämlich nicht akkurat genug, wenn es ums schnelle Blättern durch dicke E-Book-Wälzer geht.

Researchers produce cheaper, 'cooler' semiconductor nanowires
Advances in nanowires may occur on a pretty regular basis these days, but this new development out of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems could have a particularly big impact on one all-important area: cost. As PhysOrg reports, manufacturing semiconducter nanowires at an industrial scale is currently very expensive because they need to be produced at extremely high temperatures (600 to 900 degrees Celsius), and the process used to manufacture them generally uses pure gold as a catalyst, which obviously adds to the cost. Nortel verkauft IPv4-Adressen für 7,5 Millionen Dollar an Microsoft
Der insolvente Netzwerkausrüster Nortel hat 666.624 bisher auf ihn registrierte IPv4-Adressen an Microsoft verkauft, wie unter anderem DomainIncite unter Berufung auf Gerichtsunterlagen (PDF) zum laufenden Insolvenzverfahren des kanadischen Unternehmens berichtet. There are dozens of weather apps available for iOS. Most of us are pretty interested in the weather, no matter where we live. It can affect our schedules, our driving and our recreation. In my case, I do both landscape and astronomical photography, so I'm all over the latest weather information and forecasts. It's probably the same for many of our readers.
Weather+ is on sale for US$0.99. It's a universal app, and a big one, at over 265 MB. The app's huge size comes about because there are a lot of videos that provide a background and give you a visual clue to the current conditions. Starz premium TV content will be delayed from Internet streaming through Netflix for 90 days after it first airs. Exclusive first-run movies from Starz portfolio including those from Sony and Disney will soon follow the new 90-day policy. Civil War to stream for free on iOS and iTunes
History buffs may want to check out the free PBS video app this week. The first episode of the award-winning Civil war documentary, The Civil War by Ken Burns, is available for free for the next ten days. RIM PlayBook Android Apps kommen über optionalen App Player
Wer gedacht hatte, dass RIMs Playbook Android Apps einfach so nutzen könnte, hat sich ein wenig getäuscht. Wir finden zwar generell die Idee gut nicht nur eigene Apps, sondern auch Java, Android, HTML5, Flash und Air zu supporten, aber die muss man über einen speziellen optionalen App Player abspielen. Ein Emulator der scheinbar nicht ganz so tief integriert ist. Und er funktioniert nur mit Android 2.3 Apps. BrandFinance declares Google the most valuable brand in the world
Well, it looks Eric Schmidt wasn't far off when he said recently that Microsoft is bigger competition than Facebook for Google -- at least when it comes to overall brand value, that is. Ein Leser hat uns auf ein Problem mit Schriften in Mac OS X 10.6.7 aufmerksam gemacht, durch das der Export von Dokumenten zu einem unbrauchbaren Ergebnis führen kann. Dokumente lassen sich dadurch nur noch unter Mac OS X betrachten. Damit einher kann es in manchen Fällen auch zu Problemen beim Drucken von Dokumenten kommen. Marktanteile der Prozessorhersteller: Intel im vergangenen Jahr bei 81 Prozent
Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr haben sich die Marktanteile der Prozessorhersteller nur geringfügig verschoben. Unangefochten auf dem ersten Platz liegt weiterhin Intel. Mac mini mounting madness
If you have a new Mac mini that you'd like to mount somewhere, like under a desk or entertainment center, there are two new solutions you can look at.
The first, which we received in the last week from NewerTech, is the NuShelf. This mount comes in two versions. One has a single shelf for holding one Mac mini or a Time Capsule. The NuShelf Dual Mount (see photo above) is slightly deeper for holding two Mac minis, two Time Capsules, or one of each. The NuShelf is made of clear PETG thermoplastic, with a circular hole in the bottom to hold the newer Mac mini "memory door." There are also two cutouts in the back to make it easy to reach the SD card slot and power button.

Im Sommer diesen Jahres soll es mit KonnectUS von Sensus und Open Exhibits mit einer Software endlich möglich sein, was uns auf CSI ständig unter die Nase gerieben wird. Sharing von Bildern und ähnlichem über alle Touchbasierten Geräte. Damit kann man dann Bilder, Videos, Maps etc. von einem Screen zum nächsten "flippen". International iPad 2 launch snapshot: New Zealand
Here's a preview of what international Apple fans can expect for the iPad 2 launch later today. The iPad 2 went on sale in New Zealand about an hour ago as I write this. About 15 minutes or so later, it pretty much sold out nationwide. iPhonewzealand has a good roundup of user pics from lineups all over the nation, and though the lines are much shorter than in the States, they still show great enthusiasm.
Two stores in the city I live in were authorized to sell the iPad 2 according to Apple's website: Dick Smith Electronics (DSE) and JB Hi-Fi. Aircell annnounces world's first 'airborne smartphone'
No, you won't be able to use it on your next flight, but if you're lucky enough to have your own business jet, you will soon be able to get Aircell's new Android-based smartphone designed for aircraft use. While the company's staying fairly mum on specifics at the moment, the phone is said to pack a 3.8-inch capacitive display, and it's designed to be backwards-compatible with all Aircell Axxess communications systems currently in production, as well as its forthcoming Gogo Biz Voice service. Vor dem Apple Retail Store an der Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich warten bereits die ganze Nacht hindurch erste iPad-2-Interessenten auf den Verkaufsstart des neuen Tablets — dieser startet heute Abend um 17 Uhr. Online kann das Apple Tablet bereits seit 02 Uhr heute Nacht bestellt werden — es muss jedoch mit Lieferzeiten von 3-4 Wochen gerechnet werden.

iPad 2 international lines now in full swing
The retail launch of the iPad 2 in countries around the world is fast approaching (or already underway, depending on where you are), and lines are in full swing. For those keeping track, the iPad 2 will launch today, March 25, in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK at 5 p.m. local time.

Festo's SmartBird robot takes off with elegance, doesn't fight seagulls for food (video)
The geniuses at Festo's Bionic Learning Network are well known for their fascination with robotic animals, and their latest creation is no exception. Dubbed the SmartBird, this autonomous bionic bird -- modelled on herring gulls -- graces the sky with its sophisticated two meter-long wings, which utilize a bending torso for lifelike directional control. Twitter for iOS adds camera support for iPad 2
The official Twitter app for iOS devices has been updated to v3.32, which adds support for photo and video capture using the built-in cameras of the iPad 2, as well as disabling what the company calls "significant location change monitoring" that many users found annoying. Native Instruments debuts soft-synth 'Razor' for Reaktor
Audio software house Native Instruments has taken the wraps off a new software synth plug-in for Reaktor 5 (will also work with the free Reaktor Player) called Razor. Samurai II and Supermarket Mania now on Mac App Store
Two popular games on iOS have found their way to the Mac App Store recently. First up, Samurai II: Vengeance was recognized as a TUAW Daily App a while back, and it's still a great game with solid action gameplay, a great graphical look, and plenty of polish. Those features have all made it to the official Mac App store release, and for US$13.99, you can play the game on a big screen at 60 FPS with actual buttons (probably a keyboard and mouse).

University of Twente's new lens reveals the sub-100nm level with visible light
Small is beautiful, but only when you can see it. Specifically, we're talking about nanostructures -- including cellular organelles and nanoelectronic circuits -- around the order of 100nm. Bing for Mobile portal gets updated, brings HTML5-based fanciness
Whatever Google (and Yahoo!) can do, Bing can do better? Audible audiobooks now flying onto Kindles via WiFi
Heads-up, Kindle owners -- digging into your next audiobook just got a lot less troublesome. Audible has just announced that over 50,000 of its audiobooks are now available to download directly onto Kindles everywhere through WiFi. Granted, that's still one step away (3G) from being as good as it could possibly get, but it's still a tremendous improvement over the tried-and-true USB sideloading method. Copenhagen airport tracks your every move using WiFi signals

According to the New York Times, Copenhagen International Airport is currently testing a new program that monitors passengers based on WiFi data emitted from devices like laptops and smartphones. Square Enix launches Hippos Lab, puts App Store titles on sale
Legendary Japanese game developer Square Enix has launched an internal studio called Hippos Lab, which will be dedicated strictly to making original content for smartphone platforms (specifically Android and iOS, we're guessing, but the company's obviously leaving its options open). The studio's been working on a title since March 7, and we're supposed to see their output very soon. Square Enix has already had a lot of success with its own content on the App Store, both original games and ports from other platforms, but this is a more formal dedication of resources to the mobile gaming market.

Google Music, Android in-app billing both in testing
Google Music is finally at the point where it's being tested internally, according to tips Thursday afternoon. The streaming service for at least Android and the web is being used by Google staff for day-to-day tasks, usually a sign that it's close to being complete. Samsung Vibrant passes FCC again with AT&T 3G bands: a pre-acquisition tester?
This is out of left field, but bear with us -- it all makes sense, in a creepy, business-y sort of way. First, the facts: a Samsung SGH-T959P just got FCC approval with 3G support on the 850 and 1900MHz bands (it might also support 2100MHz, but we can't tell from the documents we've skimmed in the filing -- and since it's not a US band, the FCC doesn't really care anyway). Apple files patent for graphics-based contact management
AppleInsider has discovered a recently filed patent by Apple that would, if implemented, overhaul the way users navigate through their contacts on the iPhone. The patent, "Segmented Graphical Representations for Recommending Elements," describes a way for users to navigate through their iOS contacts in a way other than through text-based lists.
An example of how Apple would use graphical elements to let users sort through their contacts would be by presenting a collection of graphical tiles which display thumbnail photographs of the contacts. Researchers enable tactile feedback for eReaders using real paper, just like the olden days
Brainiacs from Osaka University have created what they've called the Paranga -- a device that fulfills the lack of tactile feedback of page turns when using an eReader. Robocast sues Apple over 'TV-style web content' patents
Another company has filed suit in court, accusing Apple of stealing ideas that were later used to make successful products. BlackBerry PlayBook to run Android apps to prop up support
RIM along with its latest results confirmed that it would support Android apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook. The seven-inch tablet will have a Java engine that not only supports legacy BlackBerry Java apps but those running Android 2.3. Mac OS X 10.6.7 suggests support for generic video cards
Hacker Tony of TonyMacx86 discovered that the latest Mac OS X 10.6.7 update for the 2011 MacBook Pro includes native graphics acceleration for select AMD and ATI video cards. These cards include seven Radeon 5xxx and three 6xxx models which are not present in any shipping Mac products.
