Remember that Google Voice integration for Sprint we mentioned recently? Today at CTIA we got to see it in action, and it promises to take us one step closer to our robot overlords -- well, those of us who are Sprint customers, anyway. Verizon prices first-gen iPads to move
Following in the footsteps of AT&T, Verizon has drastically lowered prices on the first generation Wi-Fi iPad, according to MacRumors. If you stop by a Verizon store you can now pick up the 16 GB iPad Wi-Fi for only $299, the 32 GB Wi-Fi for $399, and the 64 GB Wi-Fi for $499. These prices are obviously only good until supplies last.
Last week we noted that AT&T had dropped prices on all of its first-gen iPad 3G models. Currently, the only iPad 3G model AT&T still has in stock is the 64 GB one for only $529. Considering that's only $30 more than the 64 GB iPad Wi-Fi model from Verizon, AT&T

Google Nexus S 4G for Sprint hands-on
We finally got our hands on the elusive Samsung Nexus S 4G for Sprint at CTIA here today and it's pretty much what you'd expect: a Nexus S with its GSM / HSPA radio swapped for a set of Sprint-compatible CDMA / EV-DO and WiMAX radios. While the Nexus S 4G lacks a SIM slot, it's actually 0.3mm thicker than the Nexus S -- that's the thickness of a business card, and is meaningless for all practical purposes. Belgian retailer accidentally sells iPad 2 a day early
A retail shop in Nivelles, Belgium jumped the gun accidentally Thursday, selling iPad 2s a day ahead of the official release date. The error was short-lived, however, and the company issued an apology acknowledging the intended release date tomorrow and vowing to take steps that would prevent a re-occurrence of the early release. The iPad 2 will launch in 25 more countries tomorrow.

Panasonic may have new pro camera at NAB
At the upcoming NAB show, Panasonic may show a new semi-professional video camera, sources told EOSHD. Initially believed to the a successor to the company's Micro-Four Thirds AF100, the new camera may not replace it after all. RIM ships 14.9m BlackBerrys in winter, but outlook dire
RIM on Thursday reported strong results for its winter but had a dim outlook for the spring. The company shipped 14.9 million BlackBerry phones, up a relatively modest amount from 14.2 million in the spring. It again had exceptional profits and saw its net income climb nearly 32 percent to $934 million, based on sheer revenue of $5.5 billion.

RIM earnings show strong revenue and growth, but weak guidance for the months ahead
Research in Motion just kicked out its year-end and Q4 earnings for fiscal 2011, and while things look fairly rosy for now, shares of the company have sunk around ten percent in after-hours trading. Why? Because even the greatest performance in the world can't ward off skeptical investors who are keyed in on guidance. The outfit reported expected revenues of around $5.2 billion and $5.6 billion, with earnings ranging from $1.47 billion to $1.55 per share. Sounds lovely, but not when you consider that analysts had expected those figures to be closer to $1.65 per share. RIM adds Android app support to BlackBerry PlayBook
You read that right -- RIM just announced that its forthcoming BlackBerry PlayBook will support both BlackBerry Java and Android apps. That includes native C/C++ development support, HTML5, Flash and AIR support, not to mention game engines from Ideaworks Labs (AirPlay) and Unity Technologies (Unity 3). Pulse News Mini 2.0 adds sourcing, speed improvements
Alphonso Labs has released v2.0 of Pulse News Mini, the iPhone version of its newsfeed reader. The update makes several major changes, most notably in terms of speed, as images and sources should load as much as three times faster. Scrolling actions in the app are said to be substantially smoother.

There's a lot of folks out there drinking and driving, and Congress sees DUI checkpoint location apps as enablers of all that cruising and boozing. Report: FCC official doubts AT&T + T-Mobile deal will sail through
An unnamed FCC official told the Wall Street Journal this week that "there's no way the chairman's office rubber-stamps" the recently announced merger between AT&T and T-mobile USA. The official didn't go into further details, but said that the organization hadn't even begun preliminary research into the merger, and that even if the deal does eventually go through, "It will be a steep climb to say the least."

Since Netflix is experiencing new competition to its popular movie distribution model it only fits that Redbox should too and the most interesting entrant we've seen in the movie kiosk business is "Spot. In an acknowledgement of the internet's overwhelming influence on the triviality we sometimes refer to as "real life," the Oxford English Dictionary doyens have decided to add a few of the web's favorite pronouncements to their lexicon. US iPad 2 ship times improve to 3-4 weeks, international 2-3 weeks
It's still longer than many people want to wait, but US iPad 2 shipping times have increased to 3-4 weeks. That's one week less than the previous ship times of 4-5 weeks back on March 15. Square Enix launches Hippos Lab for smartphone game development
Square Enix isn't exactly a stranger to the smartphone scene, but it looks like the company behind Final Fantasy (among countless other games) is now going to be moving quite a bit beyond ports of its existing games for other consoles. The company has just announced the launch of its new Hippos Lab game development studio, which will be primarily focused on creating "high quality original content" for smartphones. Wooden iPad 2 cover outsmarts Apple's Smart Cover
As if I don't already have a serious love affair with Apple's iPad 2 Smart Cover, now Holland-based Miniot is about to release a beautiful wooden iPad 2 cover.
The cover is carved from a single piece of wood and works similarly to the Smart Cover. Rather than folding into a triangular tube, the Miniot Cover rolls into a cylinder that supports the device in typing, video-watching, and portrait orientations.
The company will start taking orders for the Miniot Cover tomorrow (March 25) and includes personal engraving for free. At a price tag of just €50 for this gorgeous cover, Miniot is going sell a boatload. Apple's own leather Smart Cover is selling for €69.

Skype 5.1 for Mac improves dialing, conference calls
VoIP provider Skype has announced a fresh update to its Mac client, v5.1. While minor in some respects, the update does add the ability to dial recent numbers from the dialpad, speeding up some calls. During conference calls, the software now makes it easier to identify the active speaker.

Clearwire says AT&T merger a 'huge challenge to competition'
Clearwire's new chief John Stanton in an interview Thursday voiced his objection to the proposed AT&T buyout of T-Mobile. He cast the company's potential 79 percent control of subscription customers in the US as a "huge challenge to competition." The latest app making a big buzz seems to be one simply called Color. Why the hoopla about what is, at best, a location-based photo sharing app? Because they raised a whopping US$41 million dollars in funding before even launching. Before you say "bubble 2.0," let's take a look at what Color does. iPad 2: Morgen kaufen, aber wo? Schlange in München ist noch kurz
Ab morgen 17 Uhr gibt es in Deutschland offiziell iPad 2 zu kaufen. Im Apple Store kann man die ab 2 Uhr Nachts bestellen und bekommt dann, sofern man schnell war, sein iPad zumindest ohne Anstehen am kommenden Montag oder Dienstag. In Australien (da war schon 2 Uhr) waren sie schnell ausverkauft und die Wartezeit ist 2-3 Wochen. Sonst bleibt der Gang zum Apple Retail-Händler. See that chart up there? That's a beautiful visualization of a dozen folk models surrounding the idea of home computer security, devised by Michigan State's own Rick Wash. Mac OS X architect leaves Appple on good terms [u]
The departure of Bertrand Serlet from Apple is being done on good terms, sources claim. Until today, Serlet was the company's senior VP of Mac software engineering. Officially the executive has said he is leaving to "focus less on products and more on science;" in any case he is just moving on, the sources contend. Skype startet Chat-Designwettbewerb für die Mac-Version
Wer nicht ganz zufrieden ist mit dem Aussehen seiner Skype-Version, kann jetzt selber Hand anlegen und dafür sorgen, dass es in der einer der nächsten Versionen für Mac nicht mehr ganz so trist aussieht. Das ganze ist CSS und PNG-Bilder, dürfte also für keinen Webentwickler zu schwer sein. So dass wir uns fragen, warum man das nicht customizen kann. Die wichtigere Frage allerdings wäre, warum man den Contact-Manager nicht einem User-Designer überlässt, denn der ist wirklich anstrengend geworden, auch wenn ein kleines Mac-Update zumindest ein wenig Linderung verspricht. Bis zum 29. April hat man noch Zeit und kann ein iPad, Air Book oder Apple TV gewinnen (plus Skype Abos).

iPad 2 visits a Guatemalan volcano
Bringing the magical iPad 2 on a trip to Guatemala isn't a story in itself. Of course people are going to be intrigued by the tablet, Garageband, etc. What is slightly more interesting is the fact that it survived some rather rough treatment from its owner, tech writer Robert Evans, along the way. The iPad didn't have a case (egads!) and was sat on at least once (yikes!) and ventured into a cloud and a volcano (uh oh) -- likely pushing the limits of the suggested temperature and moisture limits. The iPad 2 did fine in all these torture tests. Would a laptop have endured the same and survived? Possibly not.

Columbia doctors turn to IBM's Watson for patient diagnosis, clairvoyance
Who says Watson's only good for laying the smack down on former Jeopardy champions? In what can only be described as the natural progression of things, Herbert Chase -- professor of clinical medicine in Columbia's Department of Biomedical Informatics -- is working with IBM in order to retrofit the supercomputer to "help doctors diagnose and treat patients." HP-Aktionäre bestätigen neue Aufsichtsratsmitglieder
Die Aktionäre von Hewlett-Packard haben Warnungen von Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) in den Wind geschlagen und alle neuen Aufsichtsratsmitglieder genehmigt. ISS argumentierte, das Unternehmen und besonders CEO Léo Apotheker hätten die eigenen Richtlinien für die Ernennung von Aufsichtsräten nicht eingehalten. Camtasia hits Mac App Store; TechSmith sees sales jump
For capturing screencasts, one of the more widely-used tools is Camtasia from TechSmith. After many years as a Windows-only application, the company brought Camtasia to the Mac world in 2009, and it's been well-received by Mac users ever since.
TechSmith recently added Camtasia to the Mac App Store to test the waters, which they found welcoming. The app was listed for a while as a "staff favorite," and the company is reporting that sales of Camtasia have risen over 20% since the app appeared in the Mac App Store. iPhone 4 überlebt Sturz aus 300 Meter Höhe

Dass ausgerechnet die U.S. Air Force Apples Gorillaglas zu spätem Ruhm verhilft hätten wir auch nicht erwartet. Der Air Force Combat Controller (was immer das für eine Position ist) Ron Walker hat seins unabsichtlich aus dem Flugzeug fallen lassen, es via Find My iPhone nach Landung im Wald geortet, und siehe da, nach einer Stunde hatte er sein funktionierendes iPhone wieder. Zugegeben es war in einem Griffin Motif TPU Case verpackt, das dadurch sicherlich einen ebenso unerwarteten Zulauf bekommt, wie das iPhone 4 jetzt in Fallschirmspringerkreisen bekommen dürfte.

iRobot debuts 'throwable' 110 FirstLook robot
Sure, just about any iRobot bot is technically "throwable," but the company's new iRobot 110 FirstLook robot is guaranteed to survive that throw and keep rolling, and even stand up to 15-foot drops onto concrete. As you may be able to tell from appearances, this one's also primarily a military bot, and iRobot says it's ideal for "hasty situational awareness," as well as for investigating tunnels and other confined spaces (it measures just nine inches by twelve inches and weighs only five pounds). It's good to see that we wacky Americans aren't the only people who start camping out in lines to buy Apple toys.
iFun.de posted the above photo of the short, but early line at the Rosenstrasse Apple Store in Munich, Germany. That photo was taken 26 hours before the iPad 2 actually goes on sale at 17:00 local time in Munich. Final Fantasy III hits the App Store
As promised, Square Enix released its version of Final Fantasy III for the iPhone and iPod touch. The role-playing game follows the journey of four orphaned youths chosen by the crystal of light to restore balance to the world after the land is robbed of light. This version is a remake of the Japanese Final Fantasy III that debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2006.

AT&T planning access to Amazon Appstore, sideloading still an open question
Angry Birds developer Rovio announced on its Facebook account a few hours ago that "AT&T is also working on enabling purchases from the Amazon Appstore soon," which would mark a pretty big move on AT&T's part since they've been firm in their resolve to keep apps from outside the Android Market ecosystem off their branded Android devices -- a frustrating (and arguably illogical) stance, to say the least. Apple poised to keep 50 percent growth rate through 2012?
Apple should be in a position to keep recording growth of 50 percent or more during the next two years, claims Forrester Research CEO George Colony. At the heart of the argument is mobile apps. Colony notes that nearly 15 million iPads were sold in the device's first year, and in a space of four years, over 90 million iPhones have been sold. Mit einem Regler an der Seite kann man auf einer Nintendo 3DS die Intensität des 3D-Effekts regeln, bis runter zu zweidimensional. Und das ist scheinbar nicht Zufall, sondern so gewollt, denn es gibt immer noch Spieler die auf 3D gut verzichten können (oder müssen). Und damit niemand auf den Gedanken kommt 3D so tief in das Spiel zu integrieren, dass es in 2D unspielbar ist, hat sich jetzt Hideki Konno in einem Interview gemeldet und verkündet, dass alle Spiele bitte auch in 2D funktionieren sollen. Niemand hält Entwickler davon ab, das zu überhören, aber dennoch: gute Unterstützung für 3D Zweifler.

Rubbery artificial muscles promise to make robots more lifelike
Some robots may already look pretty lifelike, but it's still quite a different story when they're actually moving, when all the mechanical parts inside make themselves known with some unmistakable, robot-like movements. Made up predictions about Apple's NC datacenter from (surprise!) an analyst

Friend of the blog Philip Elmer-DeWitt with Fortune Tech uncovered a gem of a note from Bernstein Research's Toni Sacconaghi wherein, after a "meeting with Apple executives," he came up with quite the sampler platter of predictions for Apple's North Carolina data center. As DeWitt points out, the data center was supposedly slated to be ready last year. Sacconaghi seems to think that it will open in the spring, which jibes with a rumor we heard in February. It makes sense, particularly in-between iPad 2 and iPhone 5 announcements.

Erste finale Mac OS X Version heute vor 10 Jahren erschienen
Heute vor 10 Jahren erschien die erste finale Version von Mac OS X. Version 10.0 trug den internen Codenamen «Puma» und wird rückwirkend von einigen eher mit «Beta für die bezahlt werden musste» verschrien als denn als eine stabile Version. Erst mit Version 10.1 — aber noch im gleichen Jahr — erschien im September 2001 ein (übrigens kostenloses) Major-Update für OS X und machte es erst richtig benutzbar. Samsung Apps store crosses 100 million downloads
Alright, so it may have a bit of an advantage being on both cellphones and TVs, but that's not stopping Samsung from boasting that its Apps store has now joined the 100 million download club. That comes just ten months after it launched, and it looks like Samsung can largely thank Europe for reaching the milestone -- France had the most number of downloads followed by Germany and Spain, and the three countries combined accounted for 40 percent of all downloads from the store, which now has more than 13,000 apps.

T-Mobile UK reveals subsidized iPad 2 prices
T-Mobile's UK division has officially announced some of its subsidized pricing for the iPad 2, which launches in the region tomorrow. At a base level a 16GB 3G model will cost £199 for existing customers, or £229 for new ones. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 official, vies for graphics lead
NVIDIA as it promised has launched the GeForce GTX 590 as its fastest-ever graphics hardware. The design mates two underclocked GTX 580 chips on one board and includes 1,024 visual processing cores, dual 384-bit memory buses and a total of 3GB of RAM spread across the two chips. It may also be as much as two times quieter than the Radeon HD 6990, since each chip now has its own vapor chamber cooling system and combined stop at 48dB of noise, even at full speed.

The 2011 MacBook Pro version of the Mac OS X 10.6.7 update appears to contain support for AMD/ATI video cards not normally available for Macs, a hacker notes. Survey suggests Verizon's iPhone customers more satisfied than AT&T's

A survey of the differences between AT&T and Verizon iPhone customers shows what we knew all along: many AT&T iPhone customers are quite fed up with the phone network.
All the main points in the Mobclix survey of iPhone users (taken in February) reinforce the conclusion:
The larger and more densely populated the city -- and hence the more overcrowded AT&T's network -- the more likely iPhone users are to have switched to Verizon. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, New York City and Boston have the highest Verizon iPhone usage.

Kundenzuwachs beschert United Internet deutliches Umsatzplus
United Internet hat seine Geschäftszahlen nach IFRS für das erste Quartal 2010 vorgelegt. Nintendo 'moving away' from insisting on 3D to play 3DS games, wants them all playable in 2D
The Nintendo 3DS has a slider in its side. A slider that adjusts its namesake feature, three-dimensional imagery, up and down in intensity relative to the user's preference. Now, although the 3DS' screen doesn't force glasses on you, it does demand that it be held just right in order to get the most out of the 3D effect and we can imagine plenty of people might neglect its extra dimension in favor of old-fashioned 2D (not to mention those who can't tolerate the third D for health reasons). Samsung: 'we will not be outdone' by iPad 2 thinness
Samsung Mobile executive Omar Khan in a chat late Wednesday admitted that the updated Galaxy Tab 10.1 was made thinner solely to beat Apple. Although the technology to make it thinner was already in progress, the iPad 2's launch hastened bringing that technology to the market, Khan told AllThingsD. Happy 10th birthday, OS X!
It's hard to believe that only 10 years ago today, OS X made its official debut after several months of a paid public beta. Mac OS X v.10.0 "Cheetah" was released on March 24, 2001 for US$129. It was slow, clunky and made many users want to throw their Macs out the window, into the closest body of water or quickly scurry back to the safety of OS 9. Bertrand Serlet verlässt Apple
Bertrand Serlet, Apples bisheriger Senior Vice President of Mac Software Engineering, verlässt die Firma, wie Apple mitgeteilt hat. Serlet dürfte den meisten aus diversen Keynotes bekannt sein, bei denen er Teile der OS-X-Präsentationen übernommen hatte — und sehr gerne gegen Windows stachelte.
Betrand Serlet kam 1997 mit dem Aufkauf von Steve Jobs Firma «NeXT» zu Apple. Serlet hat die Entwicklung von Mac OS X massgebend geprägt. Vor Apple arbeitete Serlet bereits seit 1989 bei NeXT, wo er am OS-X-Vorgänger NeXTstep arbeitete. Vor seiner Zeit mit Steve Jobs bei NeXT arbeitete Serlet einige Jahre beim Xerox PARC in Palo Alto. Serlet hat ein Doktor-Titel in Computer-Wissenschaft von der französischen Orsay-Universität.

AT&T to give Amazon Appstore access despite Android limits
AT&T has quietly posted a sign-up page confirming that it was hoping to get its Android users access to the Amazon Appstore. Subscribers are asked to name the model and provide an e-mail address for a notice of when access is opened up. The statement doesn't give an indication of how AT&T will solve the issue and isn't definite on timing beyond the "near future."

ZTE's Style S and LTE tablet coming to the US during the second half of the year
We've long covered ZTE products at Engadget, but hardly ever do we see the company's phones touch down on a US carrier. Well, that's all going to change very soon. While the Chinese company isn't sharing exact carrier partnerships, it did reveal that its new Style S and LTE tablet will be coming stateside in the second half of 2011. The first of those two is that 4.3-inch Android 2.3 handset up there. BMW starts up car sharing service with iPhone app
BMW has teamed with rental car company SIXT to develop a car sharing service that works in conjunction with a BMW-developed iPhone app. The scheme and app are both called DriveNow, and will come online in April. Intels Roadmap sowie Produktsortiment erlauben meist recht gute Rückschlüsse, welche Prozessoren in kommenden Macs verbaut werden. Inkling signs with major publishers to bring 100 textbooks to iPad by 2012, no actual ink
Inkling is a pretty cute name for a product, you have to admit, but by the end of the year it could be pretty serious business. It's a company that specializes on publishing textbooks on the iPad, devices that are rapidly killing the poor paper industry. As of now the company's products are few, but two major publishers, Pearson and McGraw-Hill, have signed on to support the service, a deal that will see Inkling's product catalog swell by several orders of magnitude. Red Hat will im laufenden Geschäftsjahr 2012 (bis Februar 2012) eine Milliarde Dollar umsetzen. Firefox 4 mit mehr als 14 Millionen Downloads

Morgen Freitag erscheint mit dem iPad 2 die zweite Generation des Apple Tablets. Wie bereits bekannt wird Apple das Gerät morgen Freitag ab 02 Uhr online zur Bestellung freigeben — in den Apple Retail Stores wird das Tablet ab 17 Uhr verkauft. Auch die Apple Shops und Apple Premium Reseller sollen das Gerät ab Morgen im Angebot haben. Wie auch die Retail Stores dürfen die Premium Reseller die Geräte erst ab 17 Uhr verkaufen. Wie wir erfahren haben, werden deshalb die meisten Premium Reseller morgen Freitag bis 15 Uhr normal geöffnet haben, danach werden die Filialen für die Vorbereitungen zum iPad-2-Launch geschlossen und um 17 Uhr für die iPad-2-Interessenten wiedereröffnet. A wafer-thin SIM interposer card from a company called Gevey is available which purports to unlock the (AT&T model) iPhone 4 running the latest iOS 4.3 software and baseband, Gadgets DNA is reporting. FCC official: no way AT&T T-Mobile deal will go unaltered
An anonymous FCC official on Wednesday night said that the proposed AT&T buyout of T-Mobile would very likely go through major changes if it were to be approved at all. Motorola denies rumors of decelerating Xoom production
Motorola has reportedly denied rumors that it is already decelerating production for its Xoom tablets. Rumors suggested the company was producing approximately 500,000 units this month, however the number is said to be dropping to 300,000 units next month and continuing a gradual slide until production completely ceases by June.

Atomos outs Ninja and Samurai devices for pro video
Pro video accessory maker Atomo is unveiling two new combo hard-drive-based recorder/monitor/playback devices that capture footage directly to edit-friendly, visually-lossless Apple ProRes format, which will be formally introduced at this year's National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference. The Ninja captures from any camera with an HDMI output, eliminating the need for capture cards; the Samurai accepts 10-bit HD-SDI input, again saving in Apple ProRes format.

Femto Forum publishes API specification for femtocell apps, places focus on 'awareness information'
As if the world needed one more association to keep up with, CTIA Wireless 2011 is delivering just that. The Femto Forum, which has done an excellent job remaining undercover of late, has just published an "industry-wide agreed set of API specifications" that will enable "advanced mobile applications based on femtocell technology." Yahoo intros Search Direct, takes on Google Instant with insular effect
Remember Google Instant? Now, Yahoo's got something like that -- it's called Search Direct -- and like Instant, it consists of a search box that quickly and automatically suggests results as you type. Unlike Instant, though, it won't update the entire results page to reflect the outcome of your potential search, but rather just the enlarged search box you see immediately above, providing up to ten suggested queries and three suggested results -- making it a little bit speedier (we were able to use it on our 3G phone connection quite easily) but also fairly limited in comparison. Voice-controlled Japanese robot assists with eating, makes veggies more fun (video)
Isao Wakabayashi, a student at Chukyo University in Japan, seems to have made the arduous chore of eating easier. Using a customized version of a Robix robot kit, Wakabayashi coded a program that makes the feeder recognize individual food items and feed them to you. Samsung hints Retina Display-worthy tablet LCDs around 2013
Samsung in a Display Strategy preview on Wednesday gave a timeline for when its own tablet-sized LCDs could reach the densities many would expect for one of its tablets or an ultra-sharp iPad. the company expects displays with 200DPI to 300DPI roughly around 2013, halfway through its current roadmap. In the presentation, Engadget and others were also told the screens would be thinner and get an extra two hours of battery life on a device the size of the seven-inch Galaxy Tab.

Orb TV streams video from your Mac to your TV
I've been playing around with the US $99 Orb TV for a few weeks now and have to say I'm quite impressed with it. For those of you not familiar with it, Orb TV is a media streamer that connects to your TV and lets you play any video from your computer to your television. It's shaped like a hockey puck and at a 95mm diameter and a 21mm thickness it comes in smaller than the new Apple TV.
Despite a few hiccups in getting it connected the first day, I've found the Orb TV easy to use. Simply connect the component or composite cables from the Orb TV device to your TV, then launch the Orb software on your Mac. Will sagen: eine durchsichtige Solarzelle in Folienform, augenscheinlich die bisher einzige dieser Art weltweit. Dafür kann man sich eine Menge Einsatzgebiete vorstellen, unter anderem zum Beispiel auch als Stromlieferant für ein Touchscreen-Smartphone direkt auf dem Touchscreen, wie man es im Hands-On Video nach dem Break sehen kann.

MacLearning announces AcademiX 2011 conference
MacLearning.org, an organization dedicated to promoting the use of Macs and Apple technology in schools of all levels, has announced its third annual"hybrid" multi-site conference, AcademiX 2011. The free conference will employ webcasting and other technologies, hosted by Apple itself, to allow participants to join in on the web. The event will be held "in person" simultaneously on April 29th at four different universities: Northeastern, Emory, Ohio State University's medical center and San Diego State.

Samsung makes 4Gb phone RAM, external 3D Blu-ray drive
Samsung kept up the attention to mobile on Wednesday night with new additions to memory and an external Blu-ray drive. The Korean company confirmed that it had just started shipping four gigabit (512MB) LPDDR2 (low-power double data rate 2) RAM for devices like smartphones and tablets. The 30 nanometer technology doubles what had been possible before and either allows a slimmer, smaller phone in the same size or more memory without having to compromise the design. Wysips wants to turn your phone's display into a solar cell (hands-on with video)
We chatted with a fascinating French startup by the name of Wysips here at CTIA today that's showing off transparent photovoltaic film -- in other words, it generates power from light and you can see right through it. It's the only such film in the world, apparently -- and though you can probably imagine a host of possible applications for something like that, turning the entire surface of a touchscreen smartphone into a self-sufficient, solar-powered beast is clearly high on the list.

FaceTime causing some iPad cameras to freeze
According to a thread on Apple's support forum, there may be an issue going around with FaceTime on the iPad that freezes up the iPad 2's front camera. Users are saying that sometimes, when FaceTime loads up, the front camera will freeze on a frame, and not send any more video. Fortunately, the fix seems to be simply restarting the iPad, but obviously there's something weird going on -- the issue often pops up even after a restart.
The FaceTime for Mac app was just updated yesterday with a few performance improvements, so there's likely an update pending for iPad as well. Hopefully whenever that's released, it'll fix whatever issues users have been having.

Samsung sees a Retina Display in your tablet future, and perhaps glasses-free 3D
Samsung gazed into its crystal ball today, and what did it see? The pixel density of tablet screens drastically increasing. Yes, while Apple may not have managed to cram a screen into the iPad 2 worthy of the Retina moniker, it sounds like Samsung may be working on just such a thing, as the company projects that it will have tablet displays with 300 to 400 pixel-per-inch resolutions by 2015. Presently, the Samsung Galaxy Tab has a seven-inch, 1024 x 600 panel, which translates to only about 170ppi, but Samsung suggests that tablets of the exact same size might stretch well beyond 1080p desktop resolutions as

NYT offering free mobile-app subs to long-time readers
The New York Times -- which recently announced a new paywall beginning March 28th for their digital content that has garnered criticism for its expensive and confusing mobile-device pricing structures -- has begun e-mailing regular users of its web portal with the offer of a year free subscription to the web and their choice of a mobile version, The Loop reports. The offer includes the iPhone and iPad editions (for which the NYT charges different subscription rates) but does leave out at least one key feature, and excludes e-readers such as the Kindle from the offer.

Updated IMDB app gains AirPlay support for trailers
Although third party AirPlay support debuted as part of the recent 4.3, apps that offer that support are now trickling in. AirPlay allows you to beam video from your iOS device to an Apple TV or to a 3rd party application like Banana TV without cables. The newly updated IMDB application (version 2.1) offers Watchlist, a way to keep track of movies that you want to watch, enhanced showtimes and ticket purchasing, and AirPlay support for trailers.
Unfortunately, you cannot use the new AirPlay features to watch Hulu or Amazon Instant Video, the way you can on desktop browsers.
