Canon gets behind Thunderbolt, teases 10Gbps camcorders
Canon on Thursday became the next company to throw its official endorsement behind Intel's Thunderbolt port. The company shied away from direct plan revelations but hinted that it would be used for camcorders that needed very high performance. The 10Gbps port would "bring new levels of performance and simplicity to the video creation market," Canon's Video Products Group director Hiroo Edakubo said.

FCC going after cellphone jammers, could land users in the slammer
The FCC has put a bounty on the heads of all the cellphone-hating vigilantes out there. These GPS and signal jammers are particularly popular amongst theaters, quiet restaurants and in many school systems fighting the good fight against sexting during class. The FCC is calling on folks to stop and to report their neighbors for using these devices -- reason being that they pose serious health and safety risks by interfering with 911 calls and other emergencies in the vicinity. Lots of iPad games go on sale this weekend, likely more to come
iOS developers have realized that there will probably be a whole lot of iPad 2 apps sold this weekend (since there will be so many new iPad 2s wandering around), so they've dropped prices on quite a few iPhone apps. T-Mobile teases 'a 4G Sidekick powered by Android'
Now that the old Danger-powered Sidekicks have had their death warrants signed, T-Mobile's gearing up to carry the Sidekick brand -- which it, not Microsoft, owns -- onward and upward. We've already seen a supposed Android-powered model sourced from Samsung in the wild, and the carrier is finally fessing up to its existence -- sort of. Toshiba: Android 3 tablet beats iPad 2, still isn't shipping
Toshiba Australia's Information Systems GM Rob Wilkinson claimed that his company's upcoming Android 3.0 tablet would trump the iPad 2. He expected that Toshiba could equal Apple's pricing but with a device that would be "richer in features." The Tegra 2-based tablet had its drawbacks, he told Smarthouse, but it would overall do well, especially as Toshiba would sell it through traditional PC shops rather than try to push it through carrier stores.

Aircell releases GoGo tech roadmap: EV-DO Rev B in 2012, global satellite coverage by 2015
Aircell started putting its air-to-ground (ATG) mobile broadband technology in planes about three years ago, and its GoGo in-flight internet's reach has grown ever since -- all the way up to the home of mavericks and mama bears. Presently, the company's ambit is limited to the continental US, but that's about to change with the addition of Ka-band satellite coverage that will blanket the US in 2013 and the globe by 2015.

Apple changes in-app purchase policy to stop buying sprees
The new iOS 4.3 firmware implements a modification of Apple's in-app purchase policy, says Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. Previously, a 15-minute window existed after downloads in which subsequent in-app purchases could be made without having re-enter a password. IDC: 18 million tablets, 12 million e-readers shipped in 2010
We've already seen Apple boast that it's sold 15 million iPads in 2010 and commanded more than a 90 percent market share, but IDC has now come in and provided a broader picture of the tablet market as a whole -- and e-readers, too. Not surprisingly, it too found that the tablet industry is basically all about Apple at the moment, although it's market share did dip from 93 percent in the third quarter to 73 percent in Q4, which averages out to 83 percent for the year -- all told, there were 18 million tablets sold in 2010. Rovio picks up $42 million in first funding round
Rovio, the makers of Angry Birds, has nabbed a total of $42 million in a first round of venture capitalist funding. This isn't necessarily quite that big a payday for the company -- while that's obviously a lot of money, the company has reportedly already pulled in about $70 million from app sales and the various licensing money it's been making off of those frustrated flyers and their grunty pig counterparts. But what this does mean is that any company looking to buy Rovio will have a tougher time of it, since the Finnish mobile game developer is now worth that much more.

Apple Store in Dresden nimmt Gestalt an: Erste Fotos von innen

Genau eine Woche nach Version 10.2 hat Apple nun Version 10.2.1 der wohl bekanntesten Musikverwaltung veröffentlicht.iTunes 10.2.1 wird benötigt um iOS 4.3-Devices mit dem Rechner zu synchronisieren.Außerdem enthält das Update eine verbesserte Privatfreigabe. BlackBerry PlayBook hits FCC in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB flavors
No surprises here, just the straight-up news that RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook is one small step closer to retail: it's gotten FCC clearance. Well, at least the WiFi-only version has -- no sign of the WiMAX-capable version for Sprint yet -- but RIM's actually sneaked all three capacities of the device through on one filing (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB). There's still quite a bit of material protected under the company's confidentiality request with the feds, so we can't see internal or external pictures or the all-important user's manual yet. Apple has released iPad versions of its iMovie and GarageBand applications, which were initially previewed alongside the iPad 2. iPad still dominating Xoom, PlayBook in tablet buying plans
The launch of the Motorola Xoom has had little impact on tablet buying plans, ChangeWave found from a study. In February, before the iPad 2 had been unveiled, 82 percent of those planning to get a tablet in the next three months were expecting to get an iPad. Just four percent planned to get a Xoom, while three percent each were looking at either the BlackBerry PlayBook or the original Galaxy Tab.

Apple changes purchase policy so your kids don't max out your credit card
The Washington Post is reporting that Apple has changed its policy on in-app purchases on iOS devices to protect users from accidentally toting up huge iTunes charges.
iOS 4.3 has a feature that requires a password when any purchases are made within an application after it has been downloaded. This is in response to situations where children were sometimes purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of in-app purchases within 15 minutes after an app was first downloaded. Mozilla publishes Firefox 4 Release Candidate

HP denies wild rumor of selling off PC business
HP in a statement denied a rumor circulating Thursday that it would sell off its PC business. Communications chief Bill Wohl accused Taiwan's Commercial Times of "irresponsible reporting" and called the talk just "rumors and speculation." He contended that the rumor was flawed on its face given how important PCs were to the company.

iMovie and Garageband now available for iPad
As expected, iMovie and GarageBand are now available on the App Store for the iPad 2 when it releases later on this week. iMovie is actually just a universal update, since the app was already available for the iPhone, but it won't run on the original iPad (GarageBand will, however). Both apps are available for $4.99. Note that the GB download is pretty big -- GarageBand will run you 370 MB, so if your iPad is already pretty full, you'll have to delete some apps or media.
GarageBand offers up all of those great in-app instruments to record with, so if you have an iPad 1 or 2, it's probably a must-get. iMovie's improvements for iPhone users ha

Flickering issues affect some Apple TV 4.2 users
Some Apple TV owners are already reporting a problem with the v4.2 firmware, released just yesterday. Affected users will see images periodically flicker, or even drop out entirely. Boeing has found one of the few instances of Wi-Fi interfering with an airliner's equipment, tipsters said Thursday. What you're looking at in the psychedelic photograph above is the result of an overturned tractor-trailer in Peabody, Massachusetts that was carrying a load of -- you guessed it -- printer ink. Fortunately the spillage isn't believed to cause any environmental damage, but unfortunately you can't just take your empty cartridges down to Peabody for a quick fill-up. Court rules in Sony's favor against LG, PlayStation 3 free to enter Europe again
Well, it looks like there won't be a widespread PlayStation 3 shortage in Europe anytime soon -- the Hague's civil court of justice has just ruled in Sony's favor in its dispute with LG, and ordered that the 300,000 PS3s currently seized by customs be released to Sony for distribution across the continent. LG has also reportedly been ordered to pay €130,000 in legal fees -- and if it doesn't comply, it will face a fine of €200,000 per day until it does. Apple boosts firmware password security on newer Macs
Apple is increasing the hardware security present on Macs, a new support document hints. For some time Apple has had extra security built into the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) of its computers, allowing people to set a special firmware password. Theoretically this prevents someone from circumventing access restrictions using an external or DVD boot drive and options like Target Disk Mode.

Dear Aunt TUAW,
I have a ~100 GB iPhoto '11 library. I currently have it on an external FireWire drive because I didn't originally have space on my internal drive. All that has changed, and I am now looking for tips on how best to manage this library and be able to back it up regularly.
iPhoto '11 seems to be working fine right now (takes a little bit of time to start the app, but nothing really excessive). However, I really want to start backing it up on a regular schedule -- would splitting it up make sense (only the latest library would need to be backed up, which would take much less time). It sucks that you can only access one library at a time in iPhoto. Would moving to Aperture seem a natural at this point?
Any and all help including backup/sync progs would be helpful.

Steve Jobs' claims of Apple having 90 percent of the tablet market in 2010 weren't far off, IDC found on Thursday. It gave the iPad 83 percent of the tablet market in 2010. Firmware password security improved on new MacBook Air & Pro
ZDNet spotted a new Apple support document which states that only "Apple retail stores or Apple Authorized Service Providers" can unlock a new MacBook Air (late 2010) or Pro (early 2011) protected by a firmware password. If your firmware password is lost or forgotten, you'll have to take it to the shop to get it cleared.

MIT Media Lab gets a multiplicitous new logo (video)
Logos can be surprisingly divisive things, so the MIT Media Lab has decided to cheat a little bit with its new identity: it won't have just one logo, it'll have 40,000. Apple has set up a temporary Apple Store in Austin, TX for SXSW
Apple is leasing retail space in downtown Austin for the upcoming South by Southwest conference. The temporary retail store will be located at Sixth and Congress Street and preparations are under way for a Friday opening. This debut coincides with the launch of the iPad 2 and the SXSW conference which begins March 11. The space is quite close to the downtown Austin Convention Center -- handy if you are attending SXSW and want to get an iPad 2 without using a car or taxi.

RED EPIC shoots birds at 96fps, no dog needed to retrieve them (video)
Forgive us if we take a moment every now and again to relish in some resolution overload courtesy of a RED EPIC, but we just can't help ourselves. The video below (and picture above) come courtesy of Tom Lowe, who filmed a sequence of birds frolicking in the water at Salton Sea, California, captured at 5K resolution and at 96fps. This gives everything a rather majestic air to it -- though the soundtrack certainly doesn't hurt. Apple to start taking online iPad 2 orders at 1AM Pacific
Online orders of the iPad 2 will open at Apple around 1AM Pacific time on Friday, or about 4AM Eastern, according to the company. The timing mirrors that announced by AT&T, one of Apple's two US carrier partners. Buyers will otherwise have to line up for 5PM (local time) launches at retail chains, including not just Apple and AT&T but Best Buy, Target, Verizon, Walmart and some smaller resellers.

Clement Valla's Postcards from Google Earth blend 3D with 2D, look freaky
The satellite imagery used in Google Earth is captured in 2D. The terrain that it covers is rendered in 3D. Sometimes those disparate layers don't line up, and sometimes those results can be quite compelling. Artist Clement Valla has collected some of the most striking examples in an online gallery called "Postcards from Google Earth, Bridges." It's 60 images from around the virtual globe, pictures that are occasionally janky, occasionally boring, but often quite moving in a Salvador Dali sort of way. Safari used to hijack MacBook Pro at Pwn2Own 2011
A flaw in WebKit, the engine that underlies Safari, Mobile Safari, and several other browsers, was found to be vulnerable in this year's "Pwn2Own" competition, as reported by ZDNet and many others. The iPhone is known for casual games, but Float might be a little too simple even for most casual gamers. That said, children and those just looking for a super simple experience may find it interesting. It's a game we've all played before -- you get a balloon and try to keep it in the air for as long as possible. In Float, you get a few balloons that fall down the screen towards a row of spikes at the bottom, and it's your job to tap them up and away from the danger below.
It does get a little more frenzied, and there's a bonus area to play with on the lower half, so there is a little strategy in how far you let them drop before batting them back up. But what's really intriguing about this one isn't in the gameplay, it's more in the presentation. The balloons are colorfully rendered, and the UI is very clean and well-designed

Designer Edouard Urcadez took the liberty of utilizing the Fiskar brand on this here concoction, which features an unorthodox form factor, larger-than-life volume / tone knobs, an array of rear outputs and a Made in Finland badge. Study: Wi-Fi 30% slower on average in homes than wired
A new study has shown that download speeds over Wi-Fi are on average 30 percent slower than fixed Ethernet connections. The reason for this lies in physical barriers around a house as interference from other devices, including microwaves. According to Reuters, broadband research firm Epitiro has reported that when surfing the net, the speed drop is not as noticeable. However, when data is being transferred over Wi-Fi it could result in latency and data loss.

Certain USB hubs could cause system instability on Macs
Stumble up to your Mac first thing in the morning, tap the keyboard to wake it up and -- what? I incorrectly disconnected my Time Machine backup drive? I never touched it, I swear!
Turns out, this is not my fault for once. Apple has just released a support note explaining how, in a certain combination of circumstances, third-party USB hubs may incorrectly disconnect after wake from sleep, causing system instability. Basically if you have a third-party USB hub that doesn't wake properly, is connected via another USB hub and you wake your computer with an external USB mouse or keyboard, voilà, system instability.

Verizon's network may reach areas that AT&T doesn't, but people stuck with AT&T have told themselves at least AT&T's data network is faster. While this is indeed the case, it doesn't make web pages load any faster on AT&T than on Verizon, according to a phone testing firm.

iClarified reports that based on evidence found within the iOS 4.3 firmware, the iPhone 5 is likely to have the same dual-core A5 processor as the iPad 2. This is not at all shocking; last year, the iPhone 4 launched with the same A4 processor that debuted in the original iPad.

It was just a few weeks ago that BMW launched its new brand, simply called "i," and pledged two new electrified cars would be coming to save us from both the perils of pollution and the danger of boring commutes. Hackers attack Safari on MacBook to win Pwn2Own
Security researches from the French company Vupen hacked a MacBook running Safari to win the recent Pwn2Own hacking contest this week at the CanSecWest security conference. The group discovered and exploited an unpatched vulnerability in Safari's WebKit engine. To say Apple's iPad 2 is an easy tablet to review is somewhat of an understatement. The device, a follow up to last year's wildly successful (and currently market-defining) iPad, is nearly identical when it comes to software, and though improved, closely related on the hardware side as well. With a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display, the general size and shape of the device has remained the same, and though inside there's a new dual core A5 CPU, more memory, and a pair of new cameras, most of the iPad 2's changes are cosmetic. iPhone, Android share surging in Europe as Nokia collapses
Android and the iPhone are making deep inroads into European cellphone market share at Nokia's expense, IDC found in a new study. Apple overtook Sony Ericsson this fall to become the third-largest phone maker in Western Europe with nine percent, or about 5.2 million phones. Although it lost share in smartphones at 20 percent, Apple's 66 percent spike in shipments from year to year widened the gap with third-place RIM, whose BlackBerry sank to 15 percent and 3.8 million phones.

Veritas RSIII Roadster Hybrid melds plug-in tech with 600HP
It isn't exactly the hottest hybrid we've ever seen, Porsche's ludicrous 918 RSR still takes that crown, but the Veritas RSIII Roadster Hybrid is certainly no wheezy commuter. Microsoft tries to fight App Store trademark on font size
Microsoft took an unusual tack late Tuesday in an attempt to get the upper hand over Apple in their ongoing App Store trademark dispute. A new motion to strike claimed that Apple's response to its motion to dismiss was invalid because it was too dense. At 31 pages in a small font, Apple's response broke the rules citing that the response had to be no more than 25 pages in 11-point or larger, Microsoft said.

Problems syncing after iOS 4.3? It might be your photos
I just updated to iOS 4.3 on my iPhone, which is connected to a MacBook Pro, and when the installation was done, tried to sync. The sync stalled at step four of four on syncing photos, with a message telling me that the sync could not complete because "The required file cannot be found."
I called Apple right away, and the support rep, after checking with a few higher levels of tech support, asked me to uncheck the box to sync photos. The sync worked. I was then told that the problem had to be with one of the photos in my iPhoto library and that I would have to find it using the process of elimination. This didn't sound like fun since I have over 3600 photos and this would take quite a long time to accomplish.
I tried to find a simpler solution and found

Nokia E6 spied again, shows off its touchy Symbian UI
We saw the Nokia E6 first leak a little over a month ago, suggesting that Nokia had plans to add a touchscreen into the portrait QWERTY formula pulled off so well in the E71 but there was a problem: the screen was off.
