iOS 4.3 look shows A5 processor due for iPhone 5
An early look at the publicly released iOS 4.3 update has confirmed that the iPhone 5 will be getting the same A5 chip as in the iPad 2. Both the tablet and the future iPhone, codenamed the N94AP, are listed as using the same S5L8940 processor. They don't confirm the clock speed, but Apple ran a slightly underclocked version of the A4 in the iPhone 4.

iOS 4.3 spotlight: Personal Hotspot
Perhaps the biggest feature available in the iOS 4.3 update today is the Personal Hotspot -- Verizon iPhone users have had access to the feature before now, but as of iOS 4.3, AT&T users can find the hotspot feature under the Network tab, inside the General Settings app on the iPhone. Note that while Personal Hotspot makes it possible for you to share a network connection with a computer, either over Bluetooth, a USB connection, or now over Wi-Fi, there is an extra charge on AT&T, and your phone will ask you to sign up for that service if you haven't yet.

Microsoft France pegs Windows Phone 7's copy and paste update for second half of March

Erster Apple Store im Nahen Osten ab dem 16.3.
Fast überall auf der Welt gibt es schon Apple Stores. Im Nahen Osten allerdings müssen die Apple-Fans bis jetzt noch auf Ladengeschäfte mit dem großen Apfel über dem Eingang verzichten. Jetzt steht die Eröffnung des ersten Retail-Stores in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten unmittelbar bevor.

Acer touch pad / Media Center remote surfaces at the FCC
We've already seen Acer include a sleek little touch pad / remote with its Revo 100 in the UK, and it looks like one could also be coming to the US, as a similar device known only as the RMTP-S1Q has now passed through the FCC. Like the one we've seen previously, this device can be used as a multitouch trackpad to control your Media Center PC or, at the press of a button, be turned into a standard remote complete with illuminated capacitive controls. Apple posts guided tours for GarageBand, iMovie on iPad
Just ahead of Friday's iPad 2 launch, Apple has updated its official guided tours for the iPad. Most notable is the addition of demonstrations for GarageBand, iMovie and FaceTime, which were previewed in their iPad form at the same time as the iPad 2. iMovie and FaceTime in particular require the iPad 2 hardware to function.

It's been a while since I did a show dedicated to nothing but iOS apps, and with the iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 looming in the near future I thought it would be a perfect time to showcase some of the best (and some not so good) apps that have recently hit the App Store.
I have such a wide variety of apps to show you today that I'm not even going to list them here. Suffice it to say that I'll demo enough apps to keep you entertained for an hour! And I'll also be demoing my setup for Friday, when I'm hoping to do some livestreaming video from the iPad 2 line.

News: Apple posts iPad 2 guided video tours
Apple has posted a new page dedicated to guided video tours of the iPad 2’s features. Separate videos have been posted highlighting the built-in apps and features FaceTime, Mail, Safari, iBooks, Videos, Photos, Find My iPad, iPod, iTunes, App Store, Maps, and AirPlay, as well as the new $5 apps GarageBand and iMovie. Zwei Tage früher als angekündigtEigentlich sollte iOS 4.3 erst übermorgen erscheinen, doch nun ist es schon da. Es steht als kostenloser Download über die Aktualisierung in iTunes zur Verfügung. Unterstützt werden iPad, iPhone 3GS und 4, sowie iPod touch der 3. und 4. Generation. Zu den Neuerungen zählen vor allem der "persönliche Hotspot", der als Tethering-Option auf dem iPhone 4 eine Anbindung von bis zu drei weiteren Geräten an das Mobilfunknetz über WLAN erlaubt. TiVo asks customers about live iPad streaming
As Engadget notes, TiVo has launched a survey asking current customers if they'd like to be able to "stream live TV, DVR recordings and TV shows from a cable company's On Demand library to one's iPad." The survey asks users how they would feel about about both streaming video from their TiVo while in their home with the TiVo unit, and also about how they would feel about streaming shows recorded on TiVo to their iPad over a broadband connection when they are out of their homes.

AT&T says 'new devices and updates to existing models' will be HSUPA-ready
Our digging revealed that the Inspire 4G and other devices in AT&T's current stable are more than capable at the hardware level of using HSUPA for high-speed upstream connections, but for whatever reason, the carrier seems to currently require that most handsets handshake with the network using an old protocol stack that doesn't include HSUPA. NBA League Pass packages arrive on Apple TV
The NBA has extended its League Pass content onto Apple TV, enabling users to access their NBA.com League Pass Broadband accounts from the set-top box. New subscribers can sign up for two different packages: a basic set that can be used to follow up to seven teams through the regular season, or a premium bundle that includes access to games from all 30 teams.

Apple releases completed Xcode 4, offers App Store version
After an extended production period, Apple has at last released the finished version of Xcode 4. The software is Apple's central tool for developers, capable of programming both Mac and iOS titles. Some upgrades over earlier releases include a new, mostly single-window interface, Fix-it auto-correction, full support for C++ in the LLVM compiler and integration of Interface Builder into the Xcode IDE.

News: Code in iOS 4.3 points to A5 processor for iPhone 5?
New code found in the official release of iOS 4.3 suggests that the iPhone 5 will sport the same A5 processor as the iPad 2. 9 to 5 Mac reports that three separate versions of the iPad 2 are listed, as iPad2,1 (K93AP), iPad2,2 (K94AP), and iPad2,3 (K95AP), representing the Wi-Fi, GSM, and CDMA versions, respectively. iOS 4.3 steht zum Download bereit
Etwas überraschend und entgegen der Ankündigung an der Keynote anlässlich des iPad 2 Special Events vergangenen Mittwochs, hat Apple vor wenigen Minuten den Download von iOS 4.3 für iPhone, iPod touch und iPad freigegeben.
Das Update des mobilen Betriebssystem setzt iTunes 10.2.1, welches letzte Nacht veröffentlicht wurde (macprime.ch berichtete), voraus. Am Meisten bemerkbar macht sich das Update für iOS vor allem bei der AirPlay-Funktionalität, wobei neu neben multimedialen Inhalten auch Browserinhalte an ein Apple TV der zweiten Generation gestreamed werden können. Ausserdem wird mit iOS 4.3 ein «Personal Hotspot» eingeführt, welches das gemeinsame Nutzen von Mobilen Internetverbindungen auf dem iPhone vereinfacht.
Wie gewohnt lässt sich das Update über iTunes oder direkt von den Apple-Servern herunterladen und installieren.

Microsoft sells 10m Kinects, passes iPad for Guinness record
Microsoft reached a pair of milestones today with the Kinect that also gave it a minor win against Apple. The company said it had sold 10 million of the Xbox 360 motion controller since its November 4 debut, eight million of which were in the first 60 days. It averaged about 133,333 of the add-ons.

Ab sofort lässt sich über Apples Developer Connection die finale Version von Xcode 4 herunterladen. Voraussetzung hierfür ist, dass man Mitglied im iOS- oder Mac-Entwicklerprogramm ist. Nutzer, die einmal in die Programmierung am Mac hereinschnuppern möchten müssen allerdings nicht gleich Mitglied in einem Entwicklerprogramm für 79 Euro im Jahr werden: Apple bietet nun Xcode 4 auch erstmals über den Mac App Store zum Preis von 3,99 Euro

iOS 4.3 spotlight: Message alerts options
Aside from major features like Personal Hotspot and iTunes Home Sharing, iOS 4.3 also brings some subtle changes to the way message alerts work. The settings for the Messages app now allow you to have alert tones repeat up to ten times at two minute intervals, which will come in handy if you're away from your iPhone for awhile and miss a text.

Apple TV software update adds NBA League Pass, MLB.tv and Netflix 5.1 audio support

Apple releases Xcode 4; free for developers, $4.99 for everyone else
Apple has released Xcode 4 for free for all registered developers. The new Xcode offers a streamlined interface "that integrates UI design, coding, testing, and debugging, all within a single window." In addition the embedded Apple LLVM compiler underlines coding mistakes, much like Microsoft Word underlines spelling mistakes, as you type and can even correct your mistakes automatically.

Apple spendiert auch Safari noch ein Update auf 5.0.4
Der heutige Tag scheint sich in seiner Endphase als wahrer Update-Marathon für eingefleischte Apple Fans zu entpuppen. Schließlich kam zur Überraschung vieler User noch das für den 11. Hey, Pre 2 owners: want the webOS 2.1 action that Germans have been enjoying on their Pre Pluses for a couple weeks now? Of course you do -- and HP's got your back. Safari 5.0.4: Update behebt kleinere Probleme
Die große Apfel-Flickerei geht in die nächste Runde: Nachdem gestern Java und iTunes aktualisiert wurden, folgte heute iOS und jetzt der Safari-Webbrowser. Verbesserungen gibt es vor allem auf komplexeren Webseiten.

iOS 4.3, Apple TV 4.2 close numerous security holes
The new iOS 4.3 and Apple TV 4.2 updates address a host of security vulnerabilities, official notes show. The majority of the fixes are associated with v4.3, and in particular Safari and/or its underlying WebKit rendering engine; Apple remarks for example that in iOS 4.2.1, clearing cookies sometimes has no effect. The v4.3 update also copes with vulnerabilities in FreeType, TIFF images, libxml, Wi-Fi networking and the handling of IPv6 addresses.

ToneCheck's revised email plug-in scans your messages for aggressive, brash overtones
Last year, Lymbix released this so-so software that checked over your typed email messages for signs of "unintended tone." Scumbag. EADS's Airbike is a 3D-printed nylon bicycle, actually looks rather decent
We've seen plenty of neat 3D printing products over the last year or so, though none are as impressive as this bicycle in terms of scale. Unveiled by EADS (European Aerospace and Defence Group), the Airbike is "grown" with nylon powder using a process called additive layer manufacturing, which is similar to 3D printing but with the added benefit of laser-sintering to reinforce the structure. This way the parts can save up to 65 percent in weight while retaining the same strength (of steel or aluminum in this case), and apparently Airbus was quick to pick up this technology well before everyone else (hence named Airbike, in its honor). White iPhone 4 available in April?
After a delay of almost one year, people will soon be able to get their hands on the white iPhone 4, according to Concord Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo told AppleInsider that Apple will begin production of the white iPhone 4 en masse this month with a scheduled early-April ship date.
After a long series of problems and delays with the white paint used on the iPhone 4 in 2010, Apple went back to the drawing board and partnered with a Japanese manufacturer to create a new type of paint that allowed for greater control of the thickness of it when applied to a material.

VMware brings virtual machines to iPad
Earlier today, VMware, Inc. announced the availability of VMware View Client for iPad on Apple's App Store. The free app enables enterprise and government users to securely access their virtual desktops, applications, and data from anywhere with wireless internet access.
Unlike VNC clients that allow iPad users to remotely control a personal computer, VMware's solution displays the desktop of a virtual machine hosted online.

iOS 4.3 is now available for download, and along with it comes iTunes Home Sharing -- the ability to stream your entire iTunes library to your iDevice over Wi-Fi. Previously, you could use Apple's Remote app to control and play an iTunes installation on another computer, but this is different. With iTunes Home Sharing, the audio from files stored elsewhere actually comes out of your iOS device, so you can listen to iTunes while on your treadmill, or stream a movie to your iPad on the couch.

iOS 4.3 gold master benchmarks from WIRED show speedier Safari browsing
In case you're wondering how that iOS 4.3 update is going to work out for you, WIRED has released results of benchmarks they performed using the gold master (release) version of the software.
What they found was that the update provides major improvements in Safari's ability to run JavaScript. iOS 4.3 uses the new Nitro JavaScript engine for JavaScript rendering, and WIRED's tests showed that Safari was able to pull a SunSpider time of 4340.1 ms compared to 10626.4 ms for iOS 4.2.1. That's over twice as fast!

VeriFone tries to spook users from Square with exploit demo
VeriFone attempted a classic "fear, uncertainty, and doubt" (FUD) campaign against Square today with a site and a video (below) claiming a major exploit in the mobile payment method. The credit card processing firm claimed that all was needed to "skim" and steal credit card data was a fake app that could use Square data but didn't actually process a payment. Sony adds cloud storage for game saves to PSN Plus subscriptions
Alright, it's official, Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription just became a thing worth owning with the new addition of online storage for game saves. It's coming with v3.60 of the PS3 firmware, which we're promised to receive tomorrow, March 10th. Toast 11 ships; Pro version adds Photoshop Elements, more
Roxio has released Toast 11 and Toast 11 Pro, offering a major redesign and a new interface. The apps sport tools for repairing, transcoding and burning media, and the new Pro version incorporates software like Photoshop Elements to help with media production. Both titles have various upgrades over Toast 10, like saving customized video profiles, an improved updating mechanism, and the ability to burn to several drives simultaneously. Instaprinter spukt kollektive Bildströme auf Sofortbildpapier aus

Die Firma Instaprint hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, kollektiv beknipste Ereignisse in Form analoger Fotoabzüge auf den Event-Punkt zu bringen. Klingt kryptisch, ist es aber gar nicht: Das Konzept basiert auf der iPhone-App Instagram, mit der Fotos in verschiedenen, gerne analogen Looks gepimpt werden können. Der Instaprinter druckt nun schlicht alle Bilder aus, die mit einem bestimmten Tag versehen wurden, etwa bei einem Konzert. Green Automotive's all-electric Zotye SUV gets closer to US roads
We haven't heard a ton out of Texas-based Green Automotive, but it looks like it's now getting fairly close to actually selling its all-electric SUV in the US. 'Bubble burst' may be coming for iPad rivals in late 2011
The iPad 2 -- which launches Friday -- presents an "increasing risk of a bubble burst" for competing tablet makers, claims JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz. The companies' sales expectations may be too high, says Moskowitz, and could come back to bite them in the second half of 2011. Google announced on Tuesday that it added Instant Previews to its mobile search results. Originally a desktop feature, Instant Previews provides users with a glimpse of a website within the search results. It is extremely useful as it lets you see a page from a website without navigating to the site. You can use this feature to separate the wheat from the chaff without clicking on multiple links.
The desktop version display the previews within the search page, but the mobile implementation takes a different approach. AT&T: $49 iPhone helped, Verizon iPhone expected to hurt
The $49 iPhone 3GS was helpful to AT&T but not necessarily enough, the company's wireless CFO Pete Ritcher said at Deutsche Bank's Media and Telecom Conference. Sync your address book to Google and back it up
Former TUAW-writer (but forever in our hearts) David Chartier tried using OS X's built-in Address Book sync to Google Contacts and had a very bad experience which ended with him turning it off almost immediately. iPad 2 success will burst the bubble for competing tablet manufacturers
Analyst Mark Moskowitz of J.P. Morgan Research predicts the success of the iPad 2 will cause oversupply problems for competing tablet manufacturers. Moskowitz claims manufacturers looking to compete with the iPad 2 have extremely ambitious build plans that will hurt them in the long run.
According to his analysis, tablet makers could build up to 65.1 million tablets in 2011, a number which greatly exceeds his estimate of 47.9 million in unit sales. This enthusiasm to duplicate the iPad's success could lead to an oversupply in tablets and components used to build these tablets. In a worst case scenario, tablet makers may have an oversupply of 51%.

VMware View brings virtual desktops to iPad with touchscreen-friendly controls (video)
Remote controlling your personal desktop from an iPad is one thing, but today VMware is offering something a little heftier -- a streamlined app to connect to enterprise-class virtual desktops. Like Citrix Receiver, the idea is that you'll get the iPad client for free, and hopefully pay to have the cloud computers served up, but instead of streamlining applications for tablet use, VMware's app hands you customizable PC-like controls. TurboTax for iPad just in time for tax season
You may not have thought that doing taxes on your iPad was an option, but turns out it is. TurboTax has released what seems to be a full version of its tax software for the iPad, available on the App Store right now (the app is actually called 2010, but that's because it's for your 2010 taxes, not because it's a year old). The app is a free download and will help calculate your taxes for you (along with any financial tangles you happen to have), though actually filing those taxes will cost you: $29.99 for federal returns, and $36.99 for state returns.

Apple selects Taiwan's TSMC to produce its A5 chip
Apple is reported to have inked a deal with Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC to produce the A5 dual-core chip for the iPad 2, in a substantial blow to former producer Samsung.
TSMC was apparently chosen over Samsung because tests showed it was consistently producing the chips more efficiently at 40 nanometers than was Samsung at 45 nanometers. It had the most capacity and highest yields in each batch. There are now suggestions that the deal between Apple and TSMC could stretch into the future, with the Taiwanese company producing the next generation of 28 nanometer quad-core chips.

Bei M.I.C. Gadget ist dieser Prototyp eines iPhone 4 mit 64 GB aufgetaucht. Er erinnert in ein paar Details an das berühmt-berüchtigte Gizmodo-iPhone 4 vom April 2010 (unter anderem steht auch XXGB hinten drauf) und stammt aus einer Quelle, die wohl mehrere dieser Prototypen besitzt. Laut dem Besitzer wird Apple beim nächsten iPhone eine 64 GB-Version bringen, bisher ist die maximale Größe 32 GB. iPhone 4 officially coming to Korea's SK Telecom on March 16
SK Telecom has now set March 16 as the date for its launch of the iPhone 4 in Korea.
After revealing earlier this year that it was to finally sell the iPhone 4 in addition to rival network KT corp, Korea's largest wireless carrier confirmed in a press release that pre-registrations opened March 9. "SK Telecom is proud to offer iPhone 4 on the nation's top network," said So Jin-Woo, President of Platform Business and co-CEO of SK Telecom. BlackBerry Playbook to feature 7digital's 13 milllion track music store
7digital and RIM are back in bed with news that the BlackBerry PlayBook will ship pre-installed with over 13 million high-quality (320kbps) MP3 tracks from the London-based media company. At launch, the deal affects the US and Canada only, with more countries promised in 2011. PlayBook users will be able to search and preview tracks before purchasing with a discovery assist provided by 7digital's music recommendation engine. Apple veröffentlicht Updates für iTunes und Java
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute zwei Updates für Java und iTunes veröffentlicht. «Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 4» ist knappe 80 MB gross und bringt «wichtige Verbesserungen bei der Kompatibilität, Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit». Das Update aktualisiert Java SE 6 zudem auf die Version 1.6.0_24. Für Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard gab’s ebenfalls ein Java-Update.
Das iTunes-Update ist ebenfalls knapp 80 MB gross und aktualisiert Apples Medien-App auf Version 10.2.1 — wie bereits bei 10.2 wird bei den Neuerungen des Updates die Kompatibilität beim Syncen von iPhones, iPads und iPod touches mit iOS 4.3 (wird für diese Tage erwartet) und ein verbessertes Home Sharing gelistet. iTunes 10.2.1 gibt’s auch für Windows.
Beide Updates können über die Softwareaktualisierung von Mac OS X oder über Apple.com geladen werden.

Swedes to start text message-based postage system, girl with dragon tattoo reportedly pleased
The Swedish Postal Service has announced that it will soon replace traditional postage stamps with a text message-based system. The system will work pretty simply -- customers will send a text message to a particular number, and a special code will be texted back to them which they can then write on the letter. A spokesperson for Posten AB, the Swedish Postal Service, says the system will work for packages weighing up to two kilograms, and that it will be just as secure as traditional postage. Dragon Age II now available for Mac
Electronic Arts and BioWare have released Dragon Age II, the sequel to the popular 2009 fantasy role-playing game. The new version has been released simultaneously for PC, XBox, PlayStation 3 and Mac OS X, marking the first time a Bioware game has had simultaneous release on the Mac. The game is now available both on DVD through conventional resellers and for download through Transgaming's GameTree Mac service.

Apple releases iTunes 10.2.1
Apple has released several maintenance updates, including iTunes 10.2.1 and Java builds for Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. Details of the iTunes update remain unclear, as the company lists the same improvements that were added last week with v10.2. Microsoft Ventura to push music, video discovery
Microsoft's possible plans to improve or even remake its Zune service were uncovered in a leak on Tuesday. A project known as Ventura is developing services "revolving around musicvideo discovery and consumption" for some of the "most cutting edge media services," one job listing showed. Sources for ZDNet had seen mentions of a recommendation engine, ratings and comments.

iPad 2 video quality looks good, sounds great
We all know that the iPad 2's rear camera will capture 720p HD video and 3.1 stereo sound, but what does this actually translate to in real life?
Settimio Perlini of Macity.net was at the European rollout of the iPad 2 in London last week and managed to capture some video at the event with the device. The video, which is on the next page, was shot under low lighting conditions and then uploaded to YouTube. That means that it has been compressed, with a resulting loss in quality, but the video still looks and sounds quite good.

iTunes 10.2.1 veröffentlicht

Google Chrome 10 finished with speed boost, Flash sandbox
Google on Tuesday posted the finished version of Chrome 10. The version brings in the Crankshaft JavaScript engine from the beta and is as much as two thirds faster than what was seen in Chrome 9. Web viewers also get protection from Flash crashes and security holes through sandboxing that prevents the preinstalled plugin from touching the rest of the operating system.

Apple updates iTunes to 10.2.1
Apple just pushed out a minor iTunes update. iTunes 10.2.1 allows you to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 4.3 and provides improved Home Sharing, the service that allows you to browse and play media from your home computer's iTunes library.
You can download iTunes via your Mac's Software Update utility, or on Windows using Apple Software Update. It's also available at itunes.com.

UStream consolidates iOS apps, adds social aspect
UStream, the web service that broadcasts web shows and allows users to create their own live streams, has combined their previous two iOS apps -- one for watching, one for broadcasting -- into a single free app now simply called UStream v2. Users can now "go live" on microphone or camera-enabled iOS devices, or simply watch, follow and interact with their favorite broadcasters almost anywhere.
