Xbox 360 IPTV rumors ride again with 'Project Orapa'
Just because Microsoft's Mediaroom IPTV service is finally supported on the Xbox 360 after years and years of expectations (as seen above) doesn't mean the rumor mill stops, with rumors surfacing of a "Project Orapa" that reportedly combines Xbox Live, Kinect and IPTV service all in one. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley has heard from tipsters that it's related to the previously rumored Ventura multimedia project and will let subscribers to Mediaroom powered IPTV services like U-Verse use Kinect's gesture and voice recognition

iPad 2 goes on sale in US, early online orders shipping
As promised, Apple today began selling the iPad 2 in the US. The tablet launched to hundreds in line at Apple's larger stores. The first in line at Apple's 5th Avenue store was Hazem Sayed, an iOS app developer who bought the position for $900 from student Amanda Foote.

Smithsonian captures 201,000 wild photos with automated cameras
We have this big, fang-filled, claw-sharpened big cat all up in our grill thanks to the researchers at the Smithsonian, who have created a new database filled with over 201,000 pictures of elusive animals in their natural habitats. These candid shots were made possible with motion-activated automated cameras scattered around the world, and feature over 200 species of birds and mammals, and here's most impressive part -- these photos are au naturel. Quite a few TUAWers are out and about this afternoon picking up iPad 2s, and our own Erica Sadun is in Colorado right now. AT&T says it's testing HSUPA on Atrix 4G, will turn it on eventually
A communique from a "Customer Appeals Manager" at AT&T in response to a Better Business Bureau complaint regarding slow uploads on the Atrix 4G has surfaced over on xda-developers, and it looks to more or less confirm what we've suspected: the hardware's totally capable of pushing HSUPA speeds, it's just being held back for the moment. The rep says that the carrier's currently "performing the testing and preparations necessary to ensure that, when [they] turn this feature on, you will continue to have a world class experience," which would suggest that there might be some lingering network concerns. Today Apple's online store has a vast array of refurbished products at reduced prices, like the 11.6-inch MacBook Air with a 1.4GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB solid state drive, now $849 down $150 from $999. Instagram adds tilt-shift photos, news feeds, new geolocator
Instagram helped kick off the start of South by Southwest with a pair of updates to its iPhone app (free, App Store). The social photo app now has a tilt-shift filter, producing much the same miniature effect as a Lensbaby in software. The news feed has been reworked as well and both shows more information as well as activity that affects users that haven't been followed, opening the door to discovering other members.

T-Mobile's rumored 10GB data plan goes up a few dollars
It looks like those new webConnect plans from T-Mobile are still slated to go live this Sunday, but TmoNews -- which reported the original rumor -- has circled back with a minor bummer: the biggest of the plans has gone up a few dollars per month. There's no information on why the carrier has opted to suck a few more dollars out of your bank account, but the good news is that it's not too bad -- it's just another $5 (now $84.99) or another $4 (up to $67.99) if you're pairing it with a voice plan. Researchers experiment with drug-delivering robot... implanted in an eye
If the notion of a tiny robot swimming around in your eye leaves you a bit easy then, well, you might want to stop right here. For the rest of you, though, you may be interested in some new tests now being conducted by Michael Kummer and his team of researchers at the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems in Zurich, Switzerland. What you're looking at above is a pig's eye, and the tiny black spec near the top is a microbot that's able to roam around the eye with the aid of an electromagnetic system. Install iMovie on a 1st-generation iPad
One improvement coming to the iPad 2 is the addition of tablet-optimized versions of iMovie and GarageBand. iMovie is limited to the iPad 2 because the second generation tablet includes cameras to record video footage and a faster processor to handle the demands of video processing. Twenty pilot programs to bring off-campus broadband to low-income school districts
The FCC announced on Wednesday the approval of a plan that will ramp up twenty pilot programs in fourteen states. The program -- called Learning On-the-Go -- will bring wireless broadband connections to students off campus. The devices will include mobile phones and laptops, enabling students to have internet connections when they're not at school. Starting in the 2011-2012 school year, 35,000 elementary and secondary school students will be impacted in Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Ohio, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, North Carolina, Louisiana, Alabama, California, New Mexico and Iowa. LinkedIn has added a News feed to its iPhone app, which has been updated to v3.6. The News aggregator focuses on specific industries a person works in or markets to. With less than two hours to go, lineups for the iPad 2 have shown a return to form after the near-absent Verizon iPhone queues. Up to 20% of iPad owners expected to upgrade
Mike Abramsky, a technology analyst for RBC Capital Markets, predicts up to 20% of the original iPad's buyers will upgrade to the iPad 2 over the next 12 months. But Abramsky suggests the number of customers upgrading to iPad 2 will be eclipsed by buyers new to the platform.

11:45 AM (Steve Sande): I'm here at the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colorado, and fortunately it's warm and clear. I'm at about the 20th person in line, and my cohort in crime Erica Sadun just showed up.
It's a congenial group in line this morning. Apparently, the first person in line showed up at 11:30 AM yesterday. Most people in the line so far are optimistic that they'll get one, and the store manager is talking up people in the line to see how they're doing. Dear Aunt TUAW: What's my best bet for international data?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
I will be in China for 10 days on vacation later this year, and I'd like to share photos, updates, etc. with friends at home. What's the best way to do that?
I have an iPhone 4 and a Wi-Fi only iPad. As far as I can tell, my options are to either buy into AT&T's international data plans (although I don't mind the price, the minimal amount of data you get probably won't be enough) OR unlock my phone and get a China-specific SIM (complicated, and I'm unsure how to get the SIM and make sure it works).
Perhaps I might be able to get a MyFi-like hotspot device that would work in China, but I'm not even sure such a device exists.
So what's the best option for data when traveling to China?

iPad killing the competition
With the iPad 2 hitting stores across the U.S. today and worldwide within a couple of weeks, Ars Technica published a report today showing that the iPad should remain the market leader for tablet devices through 2011.
Citing data from market research firm IDC, Ars blogger Chris Foresman notes that Apple had about 83% of the tablet market for 2010, with most of the competition

Instapaper 3.0 app builds in sharing, new browsers
A new version of Instapaper, 3.0, is now on sale at the App Store. The title lets users bookmark and download converted webpages for later reading. The v3.0 update more deeply integrates sharing via Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinboard and Evernote. Preferences and credentials sync between the app and the Instapaper website; sharing commands can be queued offline for execution when a connection becomes available.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi may cost just $399, ship April 4
Samsung's long promised but never delivered Galaxy Tab with Wi-Fi may be getting close based on a flyer reportedly handed out by a Samsung representative at a technology show. The notice had the "Galaxy Wi-Fi" shipping on April 4 for about $399. Droid-Life didn't get an unveil date, but Electronista has heard from reliable sources that it should debut at the CTIA expo in late March.

Apple TV update reportedly causing screen flicker issues with HDMI to DVI adapters
We've seen reports of strange video behavior with Apple TVs before, and it looks like a new problem has now cropped up with the most recent update. According to a growing number of reports on the Apple support forums, those using an HDMI to DVI adapter to connect the device to their TV seem to have been hit with an annoying issue that causes their screen to flicker every few seconds. iPad shipment dates extend to 2-3 weeks
It's hard to believe, but Apple's online store shipment estimates for the iPad 2 are already at 2-3 weeks. The new device only went on sale today at 1:00 am PT, but already it seems that supply is going to be limited over the next few weeks at least.
If you're desperate to get your hands on an iPad 2 today (and you live in the U.S.), your best bet is to head out to your nearest Apple retail store and start queuing, if you haven't done so already. The iPad 2 will be on sale at Apple's retail stores at 5:00 pm local time.
The tablet is due for international release on the 25th of March.

Analyst: Up to 20 percent of iPad 1 buyers may upgrade
About 15 to 20 percent of iPad 1 owners will upgrade to the iPad 2 during the next year, claims RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. Even though many iPad 2 buyers may be new to the platform, the analyst suggests they will contribute to 28 million in total sales by the end of 2011. He adds that many people have likely been waiting for a second-gen model in order to get a sense of upgrades and the popularity of tablets in general.

Motorola estimated selling 300,000 Xooms this quarter
Motorola Xoom sales might peak at just 300,000 devices in its first quarter, Morgan Keegan analyst Tavis McCourt said in a research note Friday. Checks saw an average of about two Xooms sold per day at Verizon stores, which led McCourt to the figure. Best Buy wasn't necessarily accounted for and might have added to the total.

Flash 10.2 beta hits Android Market on March 18th, only supports Honeycomb at release
Contrary to reports floating about the web, the Motorola Xoom isn't getting Adobe Flash Player 10.2 today -- rather, the tablet is getting updated to support Flash which will actually arrive in one week. NTT DoCoMo to allow SIM unlocks April 1, welcome iPhones
NTT DoCoMo said on Friday that it would at last begin allowing device unlocks and support outside hardware. Any phone, tablet, or other device bought on the Japanese network from April 1 onwards will be unlockable for use on another carrier. Owners have to visit a DoCoMo store and pay both a 3,150 yen ($38) fee and sign a waiver understanding that the carrier's specific features won't work on another network.

China Telecom awaiting CDMA iPhone 4
Rumors that Apple and China Telecom are close to inking a deal to bring the iPhone 4 to a second wireless carrier in China may be premature. The latest report from Digitimes suggests the deal may be held up by the lack of a SIM card slot in the CDMA iPhone 4.
Earlier information from Chinese news site suggest this technical limitation was overcome by China Telecom engineers, but details on this achievement were not provided.

Google reacts to Japanese tsunami with a Person Finder tool
Now this is the sort of activity you'd expect from a true search giant. Instead of sitting on its hands during the tsunami that has stricken Japan today, Google has put together a Person Finder tool where people worried about the plight of their loved ones can look them up by name. There are only a few thousand records up on the site at the moment, but it should still be a useful repository for missing person data, particularly since mobile networks were taken down by the tsunami's damage earlier this morning. Information should also start piling up as recovery efforts continue. Let's just hope this Person Finder won't have to be used for too long and things can be brought back to normal soon.

Apple could sell 600,000 iPad 2s in three days
When the original iPad debuted a little less than a year ago, Apple sold a whopping 300,000 in 24 hours. With the release of the iPad 2 later today, analysts are estimating that Apple could sell as many as 600,000 units in only three days. Two independent reviews of Appleís new Core i7-powered 13-inch Macbook Pro seem to indicate that Apple may have disabled Intelís Turbo Boost function. The 2.7GHz Core i7 in the Macbook Pro typically ships with the capability to automatically overclock up to a maximum speed of 3.4GHz. As expected, the Apple Store made the second-generation iPad available for order shortly after 4 a.m. ET. Both the black and white models are available with WiFi in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions along with the 3G versions for AT&T and Verizon, but interestingly all models show 3-5 business day availability. iDealsChina has posted what it says are engineering diagrams representing the forthcoming iPhone 5. As you can see from the image above, the purported iPhone 5 features much the same form factor as the iPhone 4, with the exception of an edge-to-edge screen.

Apple's iPad 2 at Walmart; News Corp subscribers; Canon and Thunderbolt
On the eve of the iPad 2 launch, Apple's latest touchscreen tablet has already shown up on shelves at Walmart, though customers were unable to purchase it. Motorola Xoom update rolling out starting tonight, brings 'required enhancements' for Flash 10.2
In the spirit of issuing software updates with the sole purpose of preparing for more software updates, Motorola says there's about to be some brand new firmware for the Xoom, which will cross the Ts and dot the Is required to install the promised Adobe Flash Player 10.2. DaisyDisk 2.0 offers scanning multiple discs, in-app deletion
In a moment of great minds thinking alike, as TJ Luoma was writing up his Mac 101 on tracking down hard drive space hogs, I was contacted by the folks at DaisyDisk to see if I wanted to take version 2 of their data visualization software for a spin.
The core of DaisyDisk is the same as when I first reviewed the software in July 2009. It took roughly six minutes for it to scan my 640 GB drive and display the results in a daisy wheel. The UI was rewritten on Core Animation and it shows. Animation is smooth, and colors are vibrant.

We've certainly had some complaints about the Chevrolet Volt, including mediocre highway mileage, but far and away it's that $41,000 MSRP keeping it from being a real contender for mass adoption. IK Multimedia, best known for their AmpliTube app for iOS devices, have now debuted an app for vocals dubbed VocaLive. It can be used in conjunction with professional microphones to do high-quality recording and vocal processing (can also be used with other instruments). Micromat releases TechTool Pro 6, improves eDrive
Micromat have unveiled a new version of their popular hard-drive maintenance tool, TechTool Pro. The new version 6 improves the program's ability to operate in emergency situations, particular in reducing its eDrive technology's dependence the Apple-supplied startup DVDs with various models. iPad 2 pops up at Walmart early, can't be bought yet
Central New York state resident Anthony Carretero spotted one of the first known instances of the iPad 2 on store shelves. A Walmart in the area had at least the 32GB and 64GB models in their display cabinets well ahead of the 5PM Friday launch. Carretero didn't try to buy the iPad, but Electronista has heard from one reader as of this writing who couldn't get it to process in the checkout system.

Instapaper updated to 3.0, now includes social features
Instapaper, the iOS app that lets you save online articles for later offline reading, has just hit version 3.0. Already an app featured on many "must have" lists for both the iPhone and iPad, Instapaper has gained a mountain of new features in its latest update. The app and Instapaper website now have native sharing with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinboard, and Evernote; according to developer Marco Arment, "You can post to any of these services from the app offline, and the app will queue up the post to be submitted next time it's online."

Adobe Labs releases Lightroom, Camera RAW candidates
Adobe Labs, Adobe's testing ground for pre-release software, has posted release candidates for Lightroom 3.4 and Camera RAW 6.4 for immediate download. The two bring RAW file support for seven popular camera models, including the Canon EOS Rebel T3i. They also improve on lens correction profiles included in the last regular release, and add 10 new lens profiles to correct unwanted distortion and chromatic aberration.

Yahoo fixes IMAP mail for iPhone, Windows Phone 7 users
A fresh test on Thursday confirmed that Yahoo's IMAP mail bug had been fixed. The search firm quietly upgraded its mail servers so that they now respond with only the data they were asked for, rather than the 25 times higher amount they were producing before.
