Fox's Bitbop to give downloadable TV to iPhone, Android
Fox today made a deep push into mobile video with first details of Bitbop, its own mobile video service. The platform will provide download streaming full-length TV shows such as Family Guy, as well as movies, over either a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Access should be device-agnostic and will include an iPhone app as well as versions for Android and BlackBerry, although the Android version may be limited to the Motorola Droid on launch.

Clearwire CEO mentions that WiMAX could join LTE as one, Verizon Wireless CTO says no way
It's no huge secret that the differences between LTE and WiMAX aren't exceedingly drastic, and with the right support, the two could theoretically form one big, happy family. During this morning's CTIA keynote with Dan Hesse (Sprint's CEO) and Bill Morrow (Clearwire's CEO), the latter noted that he wasn't interested in waging a war with LTE, suggesting that his spectrum is "designed and built so we can add on LTE should we need to." 'Course, one would suggest that Clearwire's in no position to get angry with the standard that boasts larger industry support, but we digress.

Most of prefer to keep our eyes on the TV when in couch potato mode -- which kind of makes the smooth glass interface of a touchscreen remote out of the question. But who knows? AT&T's mobile U-verse getting upgraded: download your recordings on the go
In a session held by AT&T at CTIA today, the carrier previewed an upgraded version of its mobile U-verse app, and let's just put it this way: it's significantly more important to AT&T's "three-screen" strategy than the version that launched in the middle of last year. The big deal is that shows recorded on your box at home can be streamed to your phone from any WiFi hotspot, a nice little bonus for U-verse subscribers who haven't ponied up for something like a Slingbox. We don't have a launch date yet, but what we saw demoed today certainly looked like it was just about ready to go --

Verizon: 1/3rd of US covered by 4G in 2010, phone in 2011
Verizon at its CTIA presentation today provided many more details of its LTE-based 4G network. The carrier's CTO Tony Melone said that Verizon has finished its trials in Boston and Seattle and expects that the 25 to 30 cities launching in the "not too distant future" would be enough to cover a third of the US by the end of the year. Coverage should double in about 15 months and should finally match or exceed 3G by late 2013.

Survey finds people eager to 'work on the go' with iPad, we wonder what line of 'work' they're in
So, give this a listen -- a survey from the lairs of Sybase has found that among smartphone-owning respondents (770 of 2,443 polled), some 52.3 percent of them "would use a tablet device such as the Apple iPad is for working on the go." We fully understand that this phrase leaves open the possibility of using tablets not Designed in Cupertino, but the mere fact that it's highlighted gave us pause. We're still trying to figure out how exactly Apple's forthcoming tablet is going to fit between our daily laptop and workhorse-of-a-smartphone, and without a major overhaul of the iPhone OS, we definitely can't visualize ourselves us

US Army consults with Apple on troop-ready electronics
The US Army is consulting with Apple in hopes of attaining better technology for soldiers, an official press statement reveals. Maj. Gen. Nick Justice, commanding general of the Research, Development and Engineering Command, is said to have visited Apple's Cupertino headquarters on March 5th with a portion of his staff in tow. The group toured labs and other offices, also sharing examples of the battlefield use of Apple products.

Sony's Koller says Nintendo 3DS is a 'bit of a stretch,' no plans for 3D PSP
Sony has never been one to mince words when it comes to Nintendo, and it looks like the company's newly announced Nintendo 3DS is no exception. Speaking with IGN, SCEA Director of Hardware and Marketing John Koller confirmed that Sony's "focus on 3D right now is on the console," and added that "the amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts." Verizon Wireless: 'all' 4G WWAN devices will support 3G, too
Hear that, kids? Tony Melone -- Verizon Wireless' Senior VP and CTO -- confirmed to us during a one-on-one meeting after the company's CTIA roundtable discussion that every last one of its data-only LTE WWAN devices (aircards, MiFi-type products and USB data sticks, for example) would also support 3G. Verizon 'wrapping up' Boston and Seattle trials, 'friendly user' ones coming this summer
Remember those LTE trials that Verizon Wireless started up in Boston and Seattle back in August of last year? Good news, mobile surfers -- the operator has today confirmed in a roundtable at CTIA that they're both nearing their end, giving us hope that they're gleaned the necessary information from them to start moving onto bigger and better things. Upcoming Mac, iPod touch sales looking good, says analyst
Apple is showing "solid order trends" when it comes to the Mac and iPod touch, according to Barclay's Capital analyst Ben Reitzes. The view originates in a recent tour of Asia; the same trip is also said to have shown iPhone sales "picking up" in China and Japan. AT&T to roll out 3G MicroCell nationwide in mid-April
AT&T today expanded access to the 3G MicroCell to all its cellphone subscribers. The previously trial-only femtocell provides a personal 3G voice and data connection for those whose homes or offices would normally be on the fringe of service: calls are routed through an existing broadband Internet connection. As many as 10 phones can be linked to a 3G MicroCell, and four of those can use the cell at the same time.

Kobo offers own e-reader, shows iPad app
Previously known for its cross-platform e-book store, Kobo today delved into hardware of its own with the Kobo eReader. The 6-inch device consciously avoids the sheer level of features found in other readers but compensates with a very low $149 price and a simple design. AT&T 3G MicroCell starting nationwide roll-out in mid-April
Unless you've been in one of a few key test markets, you've been pretty much out of luck boosting your AT&T signal in the comfortable confines of your home since the 3G MicroCell first launched -- until now. Starting in the middle of next month in a deployment that spans "several" months, customers across the country should expect to see MicroCells pop up in their local regions. Verizon launching V Cast Apps on March 29th, RIM devices get first dibs
We're here at Verizon Wireless' LTE forum at CTIA 2010, and a higher-up speaking about application development just let a sweet little nugget of information slip: the long-awaited V Cast Apps market will launch on March 29th. If you'll recall, we've been hearing about this portal ever since last summer, but we're guessing that a bona fide launch was put on pause in order to tweak things for Verizon's eventual LTE release (a bit we'll touch on here later). iWonder Android tablet fixes major bug: the logo is right-side-up
Remember that ultra-low-cost Android-powered tablet that Marvell was showing off back at MWC this year? It seemed neat enough considering the aggressive goal of getting it into Chinese customers' hands for somewhere around $100, but there was a single unforgivable problem: the iWonder logo was upside-down. Apple iBookstore bestsellers to match Amazon's price
Many titles on Apple's iBookstore will carry the same price as their Amazon Kindle equivalents when the store and the iPad go live on April 3rd, a leak may have confirmed today. Samsung reveals first LTE phone is MetroPCS-bound
Samsung surprised the industry on Wednesday by revealing that the first phone ever to use LTE is headed to MetroPCS. The SCH-r900 (not yet pictured) will run on the new 4G standard when the small US cell provider switches on the faster network in the second half of this year. Novatel MiFi gets iPhone streaming, online backup
Novatel at the CTIA mobile expo has given the MiFi a functional boost by adding media sharing and backup features. The 3G-to-Wi-Fi router can now act as a DLNA server for content on an inserted microSDHC card and will play it to any app or device that recognizes the sharing format, including the PlayStation 3 as well as iPhones and iPods with apps such as PlugPlayer ($5, App Store). It will initially work only with the unlocked version of the MiFi 2372 but should reach other MiFi hotspots in the future.

iPhone fails to fuel China Unicom profits
The iPhone has not helped to rescue China Unicom's finances, says the Wall Street Journal. The carrier's net profit fell 73 percent in the last quarter, a setback mainly attributed to the costs of building out a new 3G network. You know, we see a lot of ultraportable laptops these days, it's not like it's virgin territory for us, but we'd say the last time we were this blown away by a form factor was the VAIO X, or maybe the Adamo XPS in all its weird-hinge glory. LG's X300 is simply thin. Cramming 11.6-inches of screen and premium netbook parts (2GHz Atom Z550, HDMI out, up to 2GB of RAM and 128GB SSD, even some 3G and Bluetooth for good measure) into a 0.68-inch thick form factor is impressive, but we're even more struck by how insanely light this thing is -- it feels more like holding an e-book reader in hand than a laptop. Turkish group claims unlock for modern iPhone baseband
A Turkish company claims to have successfully unlocked an iPhone 3G equipped with v3.1.3 firmware as well as modern baseband code. Recent changes to Apple software updates have put a chill on the unlocking scene, as updating to v3.1.3 simultaneously installs the v05.12.01 baseband, which can not only block new unlocks but also wreck previously established ones. Slacker gets on-demand song queuing
Slacker today grew its Internet radio service into a full on-demand system. Subscribers to a new paid feature will have the option of finding and playing specific songs as well as creating their own playlists. iPhone tops, Droid worst in touchscreen test
Apple has by far the best touchscreen accuracy of any smartphone maker, a new round of MOTO testing has discovered. A follow-up on the finger-only test has used a robot to gauge the absolute accuracy and has found that only the iPhone's touchscreen could draw consistently straight lines on most of the screen. Nokia N8 being announced mid-April
We've just been told by a trusted source that Nokia will announce a new flagship device dubbed N8 in the middle of next month. That's not around any major trade shows that we're aware of, but it is just before the company's Annual General Meeting in Helsinki -- and naturally, it doesn't hurt their relationship with major investors to have just introduced a killer new device. For what it's worth, we just saw a leaked photo yesterday morning of a Symbian^3-based phone purporting to be the N8, so this lines up rather nicely, doesn't it? Announcement certainly doesn't equate to availability in Nokia's world, so until we hear otherwise, we'll assume that Eldar Murtazin's claim of a September retail launch is likely accurate.

Rogers makes free data tethering permanent
Rogers today revealed that its free data tethering promo is becoming a permanent fixture of its plans. The move gives anyone with a Canadian 1GB or larger data plan the option of using an iPhone or other tethering-capable smartphone as a 3G Internet connection for a computer without having to incur a separate charge. State-owned Telecom Egypt hasn't been doing well lately, last week announcing 2009 voice call revenues dropped 13 percent from the year prior. Random House holding out on iPad, expects price war
Random House has so far refused to sign up for Apple's iBookstore because it might trigger a fight over e-book pricing, the publisher's CEO Markus Dohle said Tuesday. The executive hinted that a deal with Apple was still an option even with just days left before the iPad's launch but that Apple's insistence on taking a 30 percent cut would force Random House to give up pricing control. Ab April können Handybesitzer in O2-Shops ihre gespeicherten Kontaktdaten und SMS automatisch von einem Mobiltelefon auf ein anderes übertragen lassen. Kyocera Zio M6000: kostet wenig, liefert entsprechend (mit Video)

Dass Engadget-US sich vor ein paar Stunden das HTC EVO 4G vorgenommen hat und davon begeistert war, macht es für Kyocera natürlich nicht einfacher. Klar ist es nett, mit dem Zio M6000 Android-Phone auch mal ein billiges Gerät mit einem 3,5-Zoll großen 800 x 480er kapazitiven Touchscreen in der Hand zu halten - wenn der nur nicht so low-end wäre. Der 600MHz Qualcomm-Prozessor kommt wider Erwarten mit Android 1.6 nicht wirklich gut klar, Icons und UI-Elemente sind verschwommen. It seems that man's mad quest to unite Sense UI and Droid continue at breakneck speed. This next bit of evidence comes from the blurrycam of AllDroid forum member Greek35T, and befitting its status as an experimental Alpha release, there are a few hiccups. Dell Aero: erstes Hands-On!

DIe US-Kollegen durften an der CTIA mit dem neuen, offensichtlich wirklich superleichten Dell Aero rumspielen (das daneben gezeigte Gerät ist übrigens ein Mini 3). Nach dem Hochstarten von Android 1.5 war dann aber auch schon Schluss. Der Dell-Mann nahm nämlich kurzerhand die Batterie raus und ließ sich auch durch Betteln und Flehen nicht erweichen und "bestand darauf, dass AT&T ihm eine unsichtbare Knarre an den Kopf halte, damit der Screen dunkel bleibt". Specs hatten wir gestern schon hier - startklar soll das Aero in deutlich weniger als einem halben Jahr sein.

SanDisk 32GB microSDHC vs. SanDisk 4GB microSDHC... fight!
We know which one we'd rather take -- but alas, we came packing the meager 4GB card in our personal phone as we sauntered up to SanDisk's booth at a CTIA press event this evening, not that juicy 32GB bad boy right above it. At the top there you can see the silicon that goes into each and every 32GB microSDHC to come out of the foundry, and it's pretty insane: 8 layers of 32nm 3-bit-per-cell memory. The SanDisk rep we spoke to said that other companies not capable of pulling off the 8 layer trick will be at a significant disadvantage, since they'll need to go with a higher density at the brutal cost of a lower yield rate -- and as we all know, a chunk of silicon that's failed QA is little more than a paperweight (and not a very effective on

Vizit frame with AT&T data access now shipping for $280
Isabella Products is now shipping its Vizit Internet connected photo frame, which was first shown last fall. The 10.4-inch LCD is LED-backlit and has a resolution of 800x600. The device connects to AT&Tís data network and lets users upload photos, with monthly or yearly limits. For $6 per month, users can upload 100 images every month, or 1,450 per year for $80. Samsung trots out Modus Bluetooth headset, complete with dual mics and multipoint

AMD 12-core Opterons leaked ahead of launch?
Provantage of North Canton (isn't that the birthplace of Marilyn Manson?) is featuring a number of 12-core AMD Opteron processors on its retail website. Obviously, this is well-ahead of the launch -- and subject to the usual caveats -- but if you're a chip-head the info is rather interesting nonetheless. Kyocera Zio M6000 hands-on: you get what pay for
It's totally unfair to Kyocera that we played with its new Zio M6000 mid-tier Android smartphone mere hours after our first look at the HTC EVO 4G, but while we were excited to see a cheaper phone with an 800 x 480 screen, the end result is pretty disappointing. The device crams that resolution into a 3.5-inch screen, which wouldn't be so bad if the capacitive touchscreen element wasn't so low-end. NVIDIA's Optimus uncovered in Sony VAIO Z, along with TRIM support?
Sony's illustrious VAIO Z may have a so-called "Dynamic Hybrid Graphics System," but NVIDIA's Optimus it is not. Or is it. Verizon vs. AT&T: Pre Plus edition
Sure, Verizon and AT&T shout at each other across our TV airwaves all the time, but how often do we get to see two exactly same phones running on both carriers? Motorola i1 video tour
We checked out Motorola's i1 last night at a dinner event, but didn't get any decent video for you so we went back to the booth and sorted that out. The i1 is definitely an interesting device, though whether its rugged mil-spec feature set -- we were playing shuffleboard with them last night, seriously -- will appeal to its intended market is still kinda up in the air. Don't get us wrong, it's not like the set is missing a pile of features, but it's essentially a giant glass display and we worry it'd eventually suffer a shattering end. StyleTap finally brings Palm OS to your iPhone
Well it's been a long time coming, but now you can finally run your favorite Palm OS apps on your (jailbroken) iPhone. The good folks at StyleTap have taken that exciting demo we saw way back in May of 2008 and turned it into a Cydia-downloadable reality. HTC EVO 4G vs. HD2 and Desire... fight!
Now that the excitement of the EVO 4G announce has finally worn off, it's time to get down to more practical matters -- in a street fight, would the WiMAX-powered beast hold its own against an HD2 and a Desire, for example? We had all three in a room just now, and here's what we've got to say:
It feels significantly beefier than the HD2, but in reality, it's not -- it's just a single millimeter thicker. The brushed metal back of the HD2 is a little sexier, but just by the tiniest of margins; it's hard to argue with soft touch and a kickstand, obviously.
We would've never noticed this without the Desire next to it, but the EVO's text is pretty huge, a side effect

T-Mobile USA reiterates that 'breadth' of 3G footprint will get HSPA+ this year
It's easy for something as grandiose as a national wireless network upgrade to get delayed ad nauseam, so we're happy to hear here in March of 2010 that T-Mobile is still looking to blanket the "breadth" of its existing 3G footprint with 21Mbps HSPA+ service by the end of this year, covering over 100 market areas and about 185 million peeps. That's an extraordinarily aggressive timeline for a carrier that was way, way late to the 3G game, and realistically, it's exactly what they needed to stay competitive in the face of 4G deployments coming down the pike from all of its national competitors -- in fact, they're specifically calling out the deployment as being "4G-like" and touting the fact that

Motorola Milestone gets 2.1 firmware upgrade in Hong Kong, Europe to follow by 'end of March'
