Dell Inspiron Mini 10 shipping April 1st with integrated Clear WiMAX
Dell's vanilla Atom N450-based Inspiron Mini 10 just started shipping a couple of months ago, and if you'll recall, we spotted one slip through the FCC's oh-so-vulnerable database with WiMAX built-in. Creative Suite 5 to launch on April 12th
Having kept quiet for some time, Adobe has finally announced that Creative Suite 5 -- an updated collection of all its major software -- will be released on April 12th. Little other information has been disclosed, except that the company is planning to host a launch event on AdobeTV. People must visit the main Adobe website to register for access.

Microsoft confirms Courier through job blog
Microsoft may have inadvertently confirmed the existence of the Courier dual-screen tablet through a post (since edited) at its JobsBlog. In the same breath as it mentioned Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Phone 7, a recruiting pitch from the company mentioned a "Courier digital journal" and linked to a leak on the subject, referring to the supposedly unofficial shots as "exclusive." Others at the company quickly acted on the slip and pulled the segment, declining to comment on the reference.

Samsung Galaxy S hands-on with video
Samsung dragged the Galaxy S out for us to gawk at this morning at CTIA and after the 30 minute video presentation, we were itching to actually check it out in our hands. Let's just get this out of the way right off: the 4-inch WVGA 800 X 480 Super Amoled display on the Galaxy S is nothing short of stunning. Put side by side with an iPhone under some very harsh lighting, the difference between them -- feel free to have a peek at the video after the break -- is pretty astounding. HTC Evo 4G brings fast mobile data to US
After building up attention, Sprint today launched the Evo 4G as its new halo phone. Previously nicknamed the Supersonic, the Android 2.1 range leader represents the first 4G phone in the US and should use the 3-6Mbps WiMAX speeds for features that aren't as practical on 3G. It carries a front 1.3-megapixel camera for video chat and can record 720p video that it can upload.

Impossible Project's Polaroid film gets tested, looking pretty old-timey
The Impossible Project's new Polaroid-licensed film is going on sale in the UK this week, and the folks over at 1854 just got a nice little press packet in the mail which included some of the surely sought after film. The black and white only (color's been promised for a later date) film, coupled with a Polaroid camera should obviously lead to some seriously ancient looking snapshots and surprise, surprise -- it does! Now, there are only a very few test shots (taken with a Polaroid SX-70) included for review here, so it's hard to gauge overall quality of the output, but we have to say the snaps we'

Jabra intros white Stone headset, development program
Jabra used the advent of CTIA to launch a white version of the Stone and a program to boost mobile developers. Both the earpiece and its unique, namesake charger have flipped over to the new color and carry the same features, such as portable charging from a battery in the charger as well as noise cancellation. AT&T will have an exclusive on the headset and start selling it May 16th for $130.

Video Wall 2.0 adds auto-animation, scalable interface
Noise Industries and SUGARfx have launched Video Wall 2.0, an updated plugin for After Effects, Final Cut and Motion. The code generates wall-style effects for video productions, superimposing clips and still images on top of animations. The v2.0 release supports multiple video clips, and incorporates auto-animation functions, in some cases eliminating the need to keyframe movements.

First Looks: QDOS Jet Set Dockable Hard Shell with Stylus for iPhone 3G/3GS

Sony drops Pocket Reader price to $169... are e-readers about to get super cheap?
The Wall Street Journal noted this morning that Sony's rather quietly dropped the price of its Pocket Reader about $30 to $169. Now, it's actually what amounts to a sale -- the price cut lasts only through April 4th -- but that date, just two days after the iPad is made available, could give us a little insight into the timing of the drop. HTC EVO 4G is Sprint's Android-powered knight in superphone armor, we go hands-on
We've been rumoring a WiMAX "HTC Supersonic" for a while now, and Sprint just dropped the hard news: the phone will be dubbed the HTC EVO 4G, will be released this Summer and it's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed. The hardware is of quite obvious HD2 descent, but with Android onboard and some nice aesthetic tweaks, the EVO 4G takes on a life of its own. The handset is centered around a 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD, with a Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor under the hood (the CDMA version of the QSD8250 in the HD2 and Nexus One), and even a helpful 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM -- hello app storage! T-Mobile HSPA+ plans bring Dell Mini 10, 100 cities
T-Mobile bolstered its webConnect data access with the first-ever HSPA+ netbook and details of its coverage. A new variant of the Dell Mini 10 will come with built-in HSPA+ and should reach up to 21Mbps in any area where the faster speeds are active, including New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington, DC's suburbs. The 10-inch system still has the 1.66GHz Atom, Windows 7 and six-cell battery of the original, but it will be subsidized down to $200 on a two-year data plan when it ships tomorrow.

Microsoft Courier existence confirmed on the company's JobsBlog?
Well this is something. According to Peter Kafka at All Things D, as well as a few tipsters, Microsoft has all but confirmed the existence (and likely actual launch) of the Courier tablet. In a post on the site by Thomas Kohnstamm (or The JobsBloggers, hard to say) touting Microsoft innovation, this passage was originally posted:

ASIMO slims down, gains new capabilities in latest revision
We've been hearing about a few of ASIMO's new tricks as of late, and it looks like Honda's now finally showing off some of its hard work. The most noticeable change is that ASIMO (now sporting the P4 designation) has shed over one hundred pounds, and now weighs in at a slight 176 pounds -- letting it slip into a stylish new blue cover for its torso. Jobs e-mails detail iPad plans, universal iPhone inbox
Several minor details of Apple plans have emerged through e-mail responses sent by CEO Steve Jobs. In regards to where the iPad will be sold in the US, for example, Jobs confirms that the only places to buy it will initially be limited to Best Buy and Apple's online and retail stores. Other authorized resellers are being kept out of the loop, including even AT&T, which is the official carrier for the iPad 3G. Owners will instead have to sign up for 3G access via their device.

Skype mobile heading to Verizon smartphones on March 25th
We knew it was coming, and now we have a concrete date. Starting this Thursday, March 25th, Verizon Wireless customers with one of nine select smartphones (Motorola Droid and Devour, HTC Droid Eris, various BlackBerrys) and data plan will be able to use Skype over the 3G network. AT&T says Verizon's first LTE phone is 'going to be a fat brick'
Ooh wee! Verizon and AT&T are getting all hot and bothered over the forthcoming LTE battle -- a battle which much like the current map wars, you can expect to grow weary of in about two minutes. Samsung Galaxy S tackles iPhone with 4-inch Super AMOLED
Samsung at its portion of the CTIA opening keynote made an Android phone its flagship device for the US. The Galaxy S is positioned as a video-oriented phone and will center on a 4-inch, 800x480 Super AMOLED touchscreen. AT&T's Palm Pixi Plus and Pre Plus hands-on
We just spent a few fleeting moments with AT&T's just-announced Pre Plus and Pixi Plus from Palm, and they're pretty much exactly what you'd expect: GSM remixes of the models available on Verizon (we weren't allowed to take a peek at the SIM slots, but rest assured, there's an AT&T carrier logo up there at the top left). Both devices seemed relatively zippy -- yes, even the Pixi -- though that can naturally change pretty quickly once you've got a few cards chugging away. Nielsen data: you're probably watching too much teevee
Nielsen's just released some zingers (also known as statistics) for you to chew on while you listen to a YouTube clip (something about Obamacare) drone on in another tab, tell your significant other to "hold on" and track your Domino's pizza in a completely different tab. The Three Screens report, as it's called, has some choice data on American habits, such as the fact that television consumption (average number of hours watched per day) has increased to nearly 35 hours per week per person. Eye-Fi adds lower-cost 802.11n, Class 6 SD cards
Eye-Fi today revamped the rest of its wireless SD cards to give them speed closer to that of the Pro X2, but at lower prices. The Connect X2 has the same Class 6 (6MB per second) minimum speeds and faster 802.11n Wi-Fi as the top-end card, and with the speed gets the distinctive Endless Memory mode. When switched on, the feature can provide an effectively unlimited amount of storage by deleting photos off of the card once it's out of capacity and they're confirmed uploaded to a target site.

250GB Xbox 360 hard drive now available for $129.99
It's been available in Japan for a little while now, and it looks folks over here will finally be able get a standalone 250GB hard drive to breath some new life into their Xbox 360 as well. First revealed on the Xbox 360 Dashboard, Microsoft has now come out and confirmed that the drive will cost $129.99, and says that it should be available at retailers starting today (although Amazon is only listing an in-stock date of March 28th).

iPad matches Kindle in sheer awareness, buying plans
Apple is already in a dead heat with Amazon for real and expected popularity in e-book readers, comScore discovered late yesterday. About 65 percent of those asked this month were aware of both the iPad and the Kindle and were equally likely to buy: 14 percent are seriously considering purchasing a Kindle in the next three months, while 15 percent are investigating an iPad. Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo completes maiden flight
Virgin Galactic's VSS Enterprise suborbital aircraft made its first captive carry test flight yesterday in Mojave, California. As shown in the above photo (courtesy of Mark Greenberg), the craft remained attached to the VMS Eve mothership for the entirety of its 2 hour and 54 minute flight, reaching an altitude of 45,000 feet in the process. Clearwire picks up Dell Mini 10 with 4G, helps Sprint expand
Clearwire and Sprint bolstered their WiMAX plans today by detailing expansion plans and new devices. The former led the news with details of a subsidized 4G notebook: the carrier plans to offer a subsidized version of the Dell Mini 10 with WiMAX that will provide the 3-6Mbps mobile broadband for less than ordering the device separately. The 10-inch netbook should cost $250 when signing up for Clearwire's 4G at the same time and will be available April 1st.

Adobe hat planmäßig eine zweite Beta der Rohdaten-Bildbearbeitung Lightroom 3 zum kostenlosen Download freigegeben. Neu sind Unterstützung von Videos sowie Fernsteuerungsfunktionen für Digitalkameras. Das Menü für den Import wurde überarbeitet, außerdem soll das Laden von Bildern schneller ablaufen. Lightroom 3 beta 2 adds tethered shooting, video support
Adobe has posted a second beta of Lightroom 3, its upcoming photo workflow package. The software is meant primarily for professional photographers managing or editing large numbers of RAW images. Seitens Opera wurde bekannt dass man nun den Browser “Opera Mini” zur Freischaltung an die AppStore-Zulassung übersendet habe. Derzeit wird gespannt auf Apples Reaktion gewartet. Schließlich gibt es bislang noch keine zugelassene Alternative zu Apples Safari Browser.

You may be seeing a rumor doing the rounds today about Palm throwing in the towel and moving to the Android platform as a means of survival -- but just hang on. Most reports are citing an email that made its way to the inbox of what looks like every major tech outlet, stating that CEO Jon Rubinstein issued an internal memo to software developers at the company over the switch. Sony cuts Reader Pocket Edition price to fend off iPad
Sony today quietly slashed the price of the Reader Pocket Edition to $169. The $30 discount is rare for the e-reader line and should last until April 4th, until just a day after the launch of the iPad. Sony's digital reading head Steve Haber claimed the price drop was intended to drive the popularity of the devices as a whole and that this sort of sale "occurs naturally" in the industry.

Marktforscher sagen Dominanz von Smartphones mit WLAN voraus
In einigen Jahren könnte es schwer werden, ein Smartphone ohne integrierte WLAN-Technologie zu finden. Diese Prognose treffen die Marktforscher von ABI Research. Over 70% of iPhone developers plan to write Android apps

Google verlegt Suchdienst von Festland-China nach Hongkong
Wie Google in seinem Unternehmens-Blog bekannt gegeben hat, wurde der eigene Suchdienst am Montag von Festland-China nach Hongkong verlegt. In der Sonderverwaltungszone Hongkong werden nun alle Anfragen aus dem chinesischen Festland zusätzlich zu den Anfragen aus Hongkong ungefiltert abgearbeitet, entweder in den chinesischen Kurzzeichen oder den traditionellen Langzeichen. Ende 2008 sorgten Berichte für Schlagzeilen, Apple habe angeblich Opera für iPhone und iPod touch abgelehnt. Es stellte sich dann jedoch heraus, dass Opera gar nicht erst eingereicht wurde, da sich die Projektverantwortlichen schon zuvor bezüglich der Ablehnung sicher waren. Can you feel the tension? The wait is on to see if Apple will loosen its grip and approve the fast (very fast) Opera Mini browser for iPhone app we checked out at MWC. Remember, Opera Mini relies on Opera's servers to render and compress pages before sending them back to the iPhone for display. As such, there's no code interpretation being done by the software -- a definite no no for approval. So the only thing that could cause Apple to reject the app would be a perceived duplication of core iPhone functionality. Whatever happens, this is going to be good.

Impossible Project beginnt mit dem Verkauf von Polaroid-Filmen in UK

Das Impossible Project hat sein erstes Etappenziel erreicht: Noch in dieser Woche geht der Verkauf frischer Polaroid-Filme los. Vorerst allerdings nur in Großbritannien und nur in Schwarz-Weiß, trotzdem ist die Symbolik wohl nicht zu überbieten: Polaroid ist wirklich zurück. Auf die Ladentische kommen zunächst PX100-Filme für die SX-70-Kamera und PX600-Filme für Kameras der One-Serie, die jeweils mit 16 Pfund für das Achterpack zu Buche schlagen, also umgerechnet fast 18 Euro - billig ist sie nicht, die Wiedergeburt. Studie: Rassismus und Hass im Internet nehmen zu
Eine Studie des Simon Wiesenthal Center hat eine Zunahme von Webseiten festgestellt, die Hass, Rassismus oder Terrorismus propagieren. Der Bericht mit dem Titel "Digital Terrorism and Hate 2010" nennt einige erschreckende Beispiele: ein Online-Spiel, in dem der Spieler Opfer des Erdbebens auf Haiti mit Bomben bewirft. It would seem that Toshiba hasn't given up on its dream of producing a nuclear reactor for the home, and its latest potential partner counts quite the big name among its backers. Nintendo kündigt 3D-DS für März 2011 an, die ohne Brille auskommt

Okay, das kam so ziemlich unvorbereitet: Nintendo hat heute angekündigt, dass der Nachfolger der DSi Nintendo 3DS heissen wird und voll 3D-fähig sein soll, ohne dass dafür eine spezielle Brille gebraucht wird. Die Nintendo 3 DS soll bis zum März 2011 erscheinen, mehr Details sollen zur E3 am 15. Juni bekanntgegeben werden. Die Nintendo 3 DS soll voll rückwärtskompatibel sein, so dass sich auch alle alten DS- und DSi-Spiele nutzen lassen. Bis Ende Dezember 2009 hat Nintendo insgesamt 125 Millionen Stück aus der DS-Serie verkauft.

Sicherheitsupdate für Mozillas Firefox

Videospiele-Markt: iPhone und iPod beißen immer größere Stücke ab

iPad: Keine Ohrhörer mit dabei
Der Vollständigkeit halber sollten wir uns kurz darüber auslassen, was ein iPad-Käufer im gewohnt schick aufgemachten Apple-Karton vorfinden wird. Überraschend für viele wird die Tatsache sein, dass die von iPod und iPhone gewohnten Ohrhörer anscheinend nicht beiligen. Apple geht wohl davon aus, dass man zuhause wenn überhaupt, dann hochwertige Kopfhörer verwendet.
Ansonsten birgt der Karton neben dem iPad ein Dockanschlusskabel, ein Netzteil sowie eine vermutlich knapp gehaltene Dokumentation.
"One more thing" für all jene, die sich die 3G-Version gönnen: Apples legendäres Werkzeug zum Auswerfen der SIM-Karte, also die kleine Metallnadel, mit der man das Fach für die SIM-Karte öffnet.

Nintendo announces 3DS -- the glasses-free 3D successor to the DS
Whoa, now this is a whopper coming (almost) out of nowhere. Nintendo has just slipped out a press release in Japan informing the world that all-new 3D-capable portable hardware is coming, with a full unveiling set for E3 2010. Titled the 3DS, this glasses-free 3D wonder is pitched as the successor to both the DS and DSi, and will operate using a "compatible cart," which we take to mean it'll offer backward compatibility. Or maybe forward compatibility, meaning that its games will remain playable on the older hardware.

USA: iPhones ohne Vertrag aber nicht frei
Für einigen Wirbel hat ein von der US-Webseite Gizmodo veröffentlichtes Apple-Dokument gesorgt, in dem von einer vertragsfreien Abgabe von iPhones in den Apple-Ladengeschäften die Rede ist. Offensichtlich sind diese Geräte jedoch keineswegs entsperrt und können ohne Modifikation nur mit einer SIM-Karte von AT&T betrieben werden.

Alfred: Die Alternative zu Spotlight in Mac OS X
Der kostenlose Programmstarter Alfred ist in Version 0.5 erschienen. Das Programm wird mit einem Tastenkürzel aufgerufen und bietet ein einziges Texteingabefeld an, in das Programmnamen, Rechenaufgaben oder Suchworte für Webseiten eingegeben werden können. SUISA-Gebühren nun auch auf Mobiltelefone
Die Eidgenössische Schiedskommission beschloss gestern, dass auf Antrag der SUISA nun auch für Mobiltelefone Urheberrechtsgebühren anfallen. Entsprechendes forderte die SUISA bereits letzten Sommer (macprime.ch berichtete). Zumindest beläuft sich der Tarif pro Gigabyte-Speicherplatz nicht wie von der SUISA geplant auf 80 Rappen, sondern ‘nur’ auf 30 Rappen. Der 80-Rappen-Tarif wird derzeit bei Musik-Playern (z.B. dem iPod) verrechnet. Apple verkauft iPhones in den USA ohne AT&T-Vertrag

Neu im iTunes Store: Apps verschenken
Im iTunes Store lassen sich jetzt auch Apps für den iPod touch oder das iPhone verschenken: Wenn man auf den Nach-unten-Pfeil neben der Kaufen-Taste einer Anwendung im App Store klickt, findet sich dort jetzt die Option "App verschenken". Bisher ließen sich lediglich Songs, Alben, TV-Folgen bzw. -Serien, Filme, Spiele für die klassischen iPods sowie einige Hörbücher direkt verschenken.
Nach dem Klick auf die Verschenken-Taste hat man die Möglichkeit auszuwählen, auf welche Weise man das Geschenk weitergeben möchte (per E-Mail versenden oder einen Gutschein ausdrucken). Abschließend muss der Kauf bestätigt werden, die anfallenden Kosten werden vom eigenen iTunes-Guthaben abgezogen bzw. auf einer hinterlegten Kreditkarte belastet.

Apple erlaubt es ab sofort, im iTunes Store auch iPhone-Apps an andere Benutzer zu verschenken. Der Betreiber hat die Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen entsprechend angepasst.

JooJoo finally shipping?
Do our eyes deceive us? Can it be that JooJoo -- the CrunchPad that wasn't -- has progressed from pre-order status to shipping? Sure seems that way. Two days ahead of the revised March 25th launch date we see that the JooJoo is now taking proper orders for their Ion-based $499 Atom tablet with 12.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, in the US anyway. So, did anyone get a revised delivery status?

Dish Network countersues DirecTV over signal reliability claims
Oh, don't act surprised. As is the norm with these things, Dish Network has filed a countersuit against DirecTV. Last month, the latter company filed suit, claiming Dish's "Why Pay More" ads were false and misleading. The countersuit, unsurprisingly, is also false and misleading advertising -- in this instance, the claim "nothing comes close to the reliability and quality of DirecTV." Dish asserts its signal reliability is exactly the same, 99.9 percent. Better strap yourself in, it's gonna be a long and bumpy ride through the court system.

iPhone, iPod taking revenue from Nintendo and Sony
Apple in one year has already claimed almost a fifth of all portable gaming revenue for itself, Flurry found in a new study this evening. The iPhone and iPod touch made up 19 percent of portable game revenue in all of 2009 where it had claimed five percent just a year earlier. At the same time, Nintendo dropped slightly to 70 percent, and Sony's PSP had its share almost halved, plunging from 20 percent to 11 percent.

Apple to sell iPhones off-contract to fight Nexus One
Apple is returning to letting customers buy the iPhone without a contract, a leaked memo may have confirmed today. Those willing to buy an iPhone 3G or 3GS at full price will purportedly have the freedom to do so at a US store without having a new or existing AT&T plan. Google's Schmidt shocked at "ferocious" Jobs call
Google chief Eric Schmidt was genuinely shocked when he was berated by Steve Jobs for the first time over Android, an alleged tell-all supposedly revealed today. While headed to the 2007 Burning Man festival, Schmidt is said to have received a "ferocious" call from the Apple co-founder, who attacked him for establishing Android and allegedly deceiving Apple about his smartphone plans while sitting on the iPhone creator's board of directors. The dialogue was enough to have made the normally calm Schmidt upset and produce a "weird" expression on his face.
